Geraldine het groen vingers vir volhoubaarheidTAMSYN JANTJIES

Toe die Proudly Macassar Facebook-groep ’n storie oor gemeenskapstuineplaas, het Geraldine Vries met altweehande die kans aangegryp.

“Ek het myself belowe dat ek hierdie jaariets vir die gemeenskap gaan doen; dit wasdie perfekte kans,” vertel sy op ’n besoek aandie Helderberg Gazette se kantoor.

En vandag is haar droom om iets vir haargemeenskap terug te ploeg ’n realiteit. Geral-dine en haar vriendinne het op Donderdag26 Februarie ’n groentetuin begin en werksteeds elke dag daaraan om seker te maak aldie saailinge floreer.

Sy het weggespring om met kleuterskole indie omgewing te onderhandel, want sy het op-gelet dat meeste primêre en hoërskole in diegebied reeds tuine het. “Ek het gedink dit is’n goeie idee om so iets by ’n kleuterskool tebegin en, sodoende, ook ’n leerkurwe vir diekindertjies te bied,” vertel sy.

“Die projek is deel van die Stad Kaapstadse uitgebreide openbare werke-program, soek moes baie vorms invul en sorg dat ek enmy vriendinne by die Stad geregistreer is,”sê sy.

Geraldine het by ’n hele paar kleuterskole

navraag gedoen of hul grond sal beskikbaarstel vir so ’n projek.

“Ek het oral gevra; op die ou einde het GoodHope Educare, my seun se skool, ingestem.

Ditwas ’ngrootgedoenteomdiegrondgereedte kry vir ons saadjies. Ek het selfs na ’n per-deplaasgegaanendieboergevravirdieperdese mis,” verduidelik sy.

“Myvriend,PhillipdeVries,hetonsgehelpom die grond te bewerk, maar voor dit moesonseersontslaeraakvandiebou-rommelwatop die grond gestrooi was. ’n Duitse vrywilli-ger het aangebied om die eerste saadjies virdie tuin te skenk.”

Geraldine vertel verder: “Voorheen was eknie so ’n groot entoesias nie, maar nou genietek dit om in die tuin te werk. Die kinders bydie skool bring elke dag ’n 2F-bottel waterskooltoe, sodat hulle die plantjies kan watergee. Die kindertjies is mal oor die tuin; hulbring gereeld groenteskille vir die komposwat ons maak of, soos hulle sê, die klompkos.”

Geraldine en haar toegewyde span wilgraag nog tuine by kleuterskole in Macassarbegin.

“Dis belangrik dat ons teruggee en ons kin-ders van ’n jong ouderdom oor volhoubaar-heid leer.

“Wanneer oestyd kom, gaan ons nie netgroente aan die kleuterskool skenk nie, maaronsgaanookgoedereaandiepubliekverkoopen die geld gebruik om meer toerusting ensade te koop,” vertel sy.

Om oestyd te vier, wil hul ook ’n potjiekos-kompetisie reël. “So kan ons die ouers wyswaaraan hul kinders so toegewyd is en ookmeer mense bewus maak van wat ons doen.”

ste items.Seker die mees belangrike items, wat ge-

reeld oorgesien word, is dokumente.Maak sekerdat joubelangrikste dokumente

in een lêer is wat maklik bekombaar is wan-neer jy moet ontruim.Bykomende stappe wat jy kan neem is om

gesertifiseerde kopieë van al jou belangrikstedokumente in te skandeer en vir jouself tee-pos.

Bespreek stappewat julle in tye vankrisis moet neemmet jou familie, so-dat almal weet watom te doen indien ’nbrand of vloed joutuistebedreig.Maakseker elke familielidhet ’n nood-rugsakwat ’nekstra stel klere, toiletware, selfoonbat-terylaaier, koplig met spaar batterye en geldbevat.Gee ook vir elke familielid ’n taak in tye van

Nutritious, delicious family treatCrust ingredients:250ml cake flour2ml salt3 ml baking powder70ml butter125ml finely grated

cheddar cheese1 extra large egg yolk45ml iced water

Filling ingredients:30ml butter1 bunch chives1 large red pepper,

roughly chopped250 g fresh mush-

rooms, sliced190ml cabanossi or

Russian sausagessliced500 g spinach, shred-

ded and steamed until cooked, salt and freshlyground black pepper

Egg mixture:eggssour creamsalt and black pepper250ml grated cheddar cheese

Method:Combine thecake flour, salt andbakingpow-

der.Rubinthebutterwithyourfingertipsuntilthe mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add thegratedcheddarcheese,eggyolkandhalfthewa-ter, andmix to formapliable dough. If necessa-ry, add the rest of the water.Shape the pastry into a ball, cover with plas-

tic wrap and chill for about 30 minutes. Mean-while, preheat the oven to 200°C and butter a27cm loose-bottomed quiche or cake tin orspray with non-stick spray.Heat butter and sauté the chives, red pepper

andmushroomsuntilsoftandfragrant.Addthesausages and spinach. Season with salt andfreshly ground black pepper and set aside. Re-move pastry from the fridge and roll out on alightly floured surface. Line the prepared tinwith the pastry and prick the base with a fork.Line with baking paper and sprinkle driedbeans or rice over the base. Bake for about 10minutes or until the sides of the pastry just be-gin to brown. Remove from the oven and re-move the baking paper and beans.Spoon the filling into a colander or sieve and

press with a wooden spoon to remove any ex-cess liquid. Beat the eggs and sour cream to-gether and season with salt and black pepper.Turn the filling into a mixing bowl, add the

egg mixture and mix. Turn into the preparedpie crust. Sprinkle with grated cheddar cheeseand bake for 10 minutes at 200°C. Reduce thetemperature to 180°C and bake for another 40to 50 minutes until firm and golden brown.

WATER SUPPLY DISRUPTION: FIRGROVETuesday 14 April 2015

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department will be completing a zero pressuretest on the water supply zone in Firgrove on Tuesday 14 April 2015.

This process will result in the disruption of the water supply to Firgrove from 22:00 until04:00 the following morning.

Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure minimaldisruption to the water supply in the affected area.

The water supply network across the City is divided into reticulation zones which are smallerand much more manageable sections of the large network for purposes of maintenanceand upgrades. This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Plan and willsignificantly reduce the occurrence of pipe bursts and the subsequent water losses.

Residents are advised to store water in clean sealed containers for domestic use duringthis period.

The City regrets any inconvenience caused.

Bringing fitnessback to schoolsSuperSport is launching a nationwideLet’s Play Physical Education Chal-lenge to commemorate its 10th year.

The event targets 10- and 11-year-oldsfrom the country’s 18 000 primary schools.The fittest primary school per province

will compete for the title and the chance towin the grand prize of a R1,1m all-purpose,all-weather multi-use sport court, whichwill be built at the winning school.Thenineprovincialwinnerswill eachre-

to reinforce the instruction of curriculum-oriented physical education and promotephysical activity in schools.Let’s Play coaching teams from Active

after which the top 10 schools per provincewill qualify for the provincial semi-final,leading to an overall provincial winner.The final will take place on Let’s Play’s

and throw, mini hurdles, rope pull and anagility drill – all of which are completed ina matter of minutes.
