FEAST OF TRUMPETS

Today is 1 Tishri, also known as the Feast of Trumpetsor New Years Day

Special feast day the Lord told Moses to celebrate morethan 3,000 years ago

Traditionally a more solemn occasion than other feasts,because it symbolizes the Judgment Day when theCreator judges each person

It became traditional to use a trumpet made of a ram'shorn, called a shofar, which is often translated "cornet"in the Bible

Although each person is judged on this day, most have10 days to repent of their sins, until the Day of

Atonement, when the judgment is sealed



FEAST OF TRUMPETS

How the Jewish Rabbi Akiba describes it:

“During the year man is apt to grow callous as to his transgression, ththe cornet is sounded to arouse him to consciousness of the time whicpassing so rapidly away. „Rouse thee from thy sleep,‟ it says to him, „thour of they visitation approaches.‟ The Eternal wishes not to destroy children, merely to arouse them to repentance and good resolves.

“Three classes of people are arraigned for judgment: the righteous, thwicked, and the indifferent. To the righteous, the Lord awards a happythe wicked he condemns, and to the indifferent ones, he grants a respFrom New Year's Day until the Day of Atonement, His judgment He hoabeyance. If they repent truly they are classed with the righteous for alife, and if they remain untouched, they are counted with the wicked.”



10 REASONS TO SOUND THCORNET

1. Because this day is thebeginning of the creation, whenGod began to rule over the world,and as it is customary to sound thetrumpets at the coronation of a king,we should, in like manner proclaim

by the sound of the cornet that theCreator is our King. As David said,"With trumpets and the sound of thecornet, shout ye before the Lord."

2. As the New Year's Day is of the ten penitential days, wsound the cornet as a proclato admonish all to return to Gand repent. If they do not soat least have been informed,

cannot plead ignorance. Thufind that earthly kings publishdecrees with such commitmethat none may say, "We heaof this."




3. To remind us of the law given onMount Sinai, where it is said (Ex.19:16), "The voice of the cornetwas exceeding loud." To remind usalso that we should bind ourselvesanew to the performance of its

precepts, as did our ancestors,when they said, "All that the Lordhath said will we do and obey."

4. To remind us of the prophewho were compared to watcblowing the trumpet of alarmfind in Ezekiel 33:4: "Whosoheareth the sound of the corand taketh not warning, and

sword cometh and taketh himaway, his blood shall be upoown head; but he that takenwarning shall save his life."




5. To remind us of the destruction of the temple and the fearsome soundof the battle cry of our enemies,"Because thou hast heard, oh mysoul, the sound of the trumpet, thealarm of war" (Jer. 4:19). Therefore,

when we hear the sound of thecornet, we should implore God torebuild the temple.

6. To remind us of the bindinIsaac, who willingly offered hfor immolation, in order to sathe Holy Name.




7. That when we hear the terrifyingsound, we may, through dread,humble ourselves before theSupreme Being, for it is the natureof these material instruments toproduce a sensation of terror, as

the prophet Amos observes: "Shalla trumpet be blown in a city, andthe people not be terrified?"

8. To remind us of the great aterrible Day of Judgment, onthe trumpet is to be soundedwe find in Zephaniah (1:14-1"The great day of the Lord isand hasteneth much, a day o

trumpet and shouting."




9. To remind us to pray for the timewhen the outcasts of Israel are tobe gathered together as promisedin Isaiah (27:13): "And it shall cometo pass in that day, the greattrumpet shall be sounded, and

those shall come who wereperishing in the land of Assyria.

10. To remind us of the resurof the dead, and our firm beltherein. "Yea, all ye that inhaworld, and that dwell on the ewhen the standard is lifted umountain, behold, and when

trumpet is sounded, hear!" sprophet Isaiah.



"Prepare ye, prepare ye, O inhabitants of the earth; for the judgment of our God is come. Behold and lo, the Bridegroocometh, go ye out to meet him." (D&C 88:92)

My special calling is to teach those who were evil during this life, and

continue to resist the laws of God. In God's mercy, they too will resurrect in the afternoon of the secresurrection, at the sound of my trump, but they will not receive any glbut will be cast out with Satan at that last day.
