INTRODUCTION to the topic, contextual background and lesson review

Materialism is an age long problem. Jesus confronted the Pharisees with this problem. In the sermon on the mount he shows he Kingdom people should view material possessions.

For the past 2 Sundays we have learned about:

1.) The Proper attitude towards material possessions (vs. 19 to 21) (One treasure)

2.) The test of material possessions – The a determination of true spirituality (vs. 22 and 23) (One Vision)

3.) – Mastering Money

“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love theother; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” – Mathew 6:24

Since Jesus taught that as Kingdom citizens we ought to have the right

attitude towards material possessions and how we handle material possessions is a measurement of our spirituality we ought to master money rather than let it master us. We not to let it become our master since as Kingdom citizens we have already submitted to the Lordship of Christ.

The word “Master” here is the word “Kurios” which refers to a slave owner. The idea here is simply not that of an employer, but rather a slave owner to which a slave owes full time obligation.

A fitting description of a disciple of Christ, is that he is a slave of Jesus

Christ. What Jesus is saying here is that it is impossible to make God and money your Master at the same time.

To “master” money that is for us not to become a slave of money but instead remember that we have one true master, our Lord Jesus Christ let us remember these principles

1.) All the money that you have is God's money. It is not wrong to have it.

Haggai 2:8 / Deuteronomy 8:17-18 / Proverbs 8:20-21 / I Corinthians 4:7

2.) We must work in order to obtain money Proverbs 14:23 / Ephesians 4:28 / 2 Thes 3:10 / 1

Timothy 5:8

3.) We must save and invest to obtain money -

Proverbs 21:20

4.) God wants us to budget.

Proverbs 27:23-24 / Proverbs 24:3-4

5.) God wants us to give our money our material possessions to expand His Kingdom

1 Timothy 6:17 to 19
