IMPORTANT DATES
Gr. 3/4 Assembly At our last School Assembly, our Grade 3/4’s presented a wonderful rendition of Waltzing Matilda. Before singing, they shared with the audience the meaning of key words such as jumbuck, swagman, billabong, billy and tucker bag to help us fully understand the song. Posters showing these items were also completed and presented. We were also able to view a slide show of all of the won-derful photos taken by Miss Somerville of our Ride 2 School Day. LISA CHESTERS On Wednesday we had a special visit from Lisa Chesters, our Federal Member for Bendigo. Lisa came out to pre-sent us with some new books for our Library. Our whole school attended the presentation where Lisa was able to talk about her job and ways that she has helped Bendigo. Lisa also encouraged our female stu-dents to aim high and follow their passions. Lisa was also keen to hear of some of the projects being considered by School Council over the next few years. I sought out some thoughts from students after Lisa’s visit:-

Thoughts from some of our senior students:
Jai (Gr. 3/4) – Lisa talked about International Women’s Day. She told us that a little while ago women didn’t get paid the
same amount of money as men who do the same job. I’m glad my mum gets paid the same amount. It would be a cool job to
be a politician because you can be on TV. I am looking forward to reading the Dogman and Captain Underpants books.
Audrey (Gr. 3/4) – Lisa Chesters is in the Labour Party. She gets to say how funding can be shared out fairly. I am very grate-
ful for the books she gave our school and I am looking forward to reading Dogman and Harry Potter.
Brayden (Gr. 4/5/6) – It was interesting to learn about government and how it works. It was good to see a politician with a
big responsibility coming to Heathcote. It made me feel like it was an important thing for the school. I can’t wait to read the
Harry Potter books.
Jackson (Gr. 4/5/6) – I liked that Lisa Chesters came to Heathcote to tell us about what she does for schools. It would be a
hard job to do until you learnt all about it. I am looking forward to reading all of the Roald Dahl Books.
RIDE TO SCHOOL DAY
We enjoyed a fabulous ride to school this morning. We were blessed with perfect weather which meant we could all enjoy a healthy ride and a happy chat to friends. A big thanks to the parents who rode with us and helped us cross roads safely, it makes the ride really enjoyable and very safe for the kids. Thanks to Lindsay, Garry, Rob, Colin, Chris, Paul and Kev-in from the Rail Trail group who accompanied us on the ride and spent time at school on Wednesday adjusting a few brakes and gears so that bikes were in good working order for the ride. More photos are on page 6 Thoughts from some of our junior students:
Jemma (1/2) – the ride was really fun. Mum and dad did a crossing and they cheered me on. I rode with Abbey and we
talked and laughed a lot.
Jackie (1/2) - I rode the whole 6km’s. it was pretty exhausting but I did a great job. I have never ridden that far before.
Laykin (1/2) – I was very exhausted after my 3km ride but I loved it. The best part was eating the watermelon and oranges at
the finish! Our adult helpers were really good.
William (F/1)- I wore my special cycling shoes. They are green. I would love to do it again.
Faith (F/1) – I enjoyed the ride but the path was a bit bumpy. My mum helped get the kids across the road. I will join in again
next time.
Ellana (F/1) – I loved riding on the track because you get air blowing on your face and it feels nice. I rode without stopping. I
had some oranges at the end.

In STEM we continued our investigation into light. The senior students are researching and creating posters which represent
technology from the period 1840-1860. This period of Australian history is being examined because the upcoming camp at
Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement is a living museum of this period. They are required to research four items of technology, with
one of these using light. As an example, the class discussed film photography from the era and why people rarely smiled.
One possible reason is because of the long exposure time for film. As part of their posters everyone is having their photos
taken under long exposure time. If they move, their photos may blur.
The junior unit created shadow puppets and performed their own little plays and songs. Shadows occur because light
travels in straight lines and shadow puppets are a fun way to demonstrate this property of light.
