Our pupils and staff mostcertainly were ‘Heroes forChildren in Need’ as theydonated their time andmoney so generously.

There were various events suchas Sponsored Silences (which

included lots of Year 7 and 9 students,Manpreet Kaur and Iqra Shahid to name justtwo); Cake sales held by the Year 9s; Spot HowMany Dots on Ms Cozens’ Dress; Guess thePudsey and Gary Barlow song; and a SpareChange collection.

During the cake sale atlunch time, students were entertainedby the Steel Pan Band and Sixth Formstudent Georgia Groom.

Without the help and generosity of every donor and participant we would nothave managed to raise the amount of money we did (nearly £900).

Well Done Heroes!

Amber Grange ‘Speaks Out’!On 23rd October, 25 year 10 students took part inthe Jack Petchy ‘Speak Out’ challenge workshop;they had a whole day learning various techniquesused in public speaking.

The activities included talkingabout likes and dislikes, makingup definitions on the spot, selling a strange product to acrowd and finally, delivering aformal speech on a topic chosenby the students themselves.Students learned about delivery– making eye contact andstanding with confidence – aswell as how to structure aspeech with a hook to grab theaudience.

All of the students enjoyed the workshops tremendously.Aneesha Fazarally described the day as, “a life-learninglesson.” Emma Ibbott commented that it was, “a greatexperience, public speaking doesn’t seem so scary now.”

To select a student to represent Heathcote at the WalthamForest finals, we held a special Year 10 assembly in whichthree finalists: Amber Grange, Ricky Brown and JosephineBates delivered their speeches for a panel of judges. Allthree students spoke exceedingly well – in fact it was avery close score! After a long deliberation, Amber Grangewas announced as Heathcote’s winner.

Mrs Reid would like to congratulate the winner, AmberGrange; and RickyBrown and JosephineBates for helping withthe assembly; as wellas all of the Year 10swho participated–their behaviour and their enthusiasm was excellent!

After weeks of practising after school, in preparation forthe ‘Speak Out’ regional finals, Amber captivated theaudience at Frederick Bremer School at the final. Herspeech, about the cruelty of the fur trade, was powerfuland extremely moving. Amber’s grandfather said, “It’s notbecause she’s my grand-daughter that I thought she wasthe best.”

“a great experience, public speaking doesn’tseem so scary now.”

Congratulations to Loren Huntand Mariam Shikheey on theirsuccessful applications to thisfantastic and excitingprogramme!

My visit to parliament“Old news from First News, by Ellyse Essel

During last term some students from the school visited theHouses of Parliament to attend an event organised by ‘FirstNews’ and hosted by the speaker of the house, in his own ‘livingquarters’. Below is an account of the event, which was, writtenby one of the students.

“My visit to parliament was such a wonderful and inspiring experience. I was so excited when we approached the huge engraved wooden door,of the Speakers’ house and it opened up to a truly spectacular stairway, floored with plush red velvet carpet that felt odd walking on with shoes!

We were all delighted to be greeted with refreshments as the ‘FirstNews’ editors prepared the debating room. Finally we were seated. Theevent was chaired by the ‘Speaker’ whose voice is both strong and full ofpower and authority as he introduced the panel.

The questions asked were very interesting, I specifically enjoyedhearing the panels answer to a question about GCSEs, whether resultsshould be made up of a 100% exam after two years’ work. One speakerstated that schools nowadays are setting too many tests, and teachersare teaching to make students pass tests, rather than teaching to expandtheir knowledge and well-being. He believed that GCSEs should beawarded after a 100% exam. Another completely disagreed and explainedthat, when she was at school, she experienced two bereavements inexam week. If her GCSEs depended on 100% exam results then her sufferings would have really affected her grades.

Both points of view made me really think through my own ideas. My visit to parliament gave me a real feel of what debating and politics is like and what I would like to do in the future.”

The ‘Man in Black’ – he’s an absolute ‘Prince’ The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, hosted a ‘Youth Leadership’ event.Through our links to the ‘Eastside YoungLeaders Academy’ we managed to gain 8invitations.

The whole event was filled with celebritiesincluding Reggie and Marvin from ‘KissRadio’ and filled with excitement. However,we were bowled over when Will and JaydenSmith joined the stage. Mr Smith gave amotivating, inspiring and, most of allentertaining speech. Two Heathcote studentswere picked to ask questions and got anhonest, thoughtful and thought provokingresponse.

After a delicious lunch and some minglingwith the famous we were each presented witha ‘goodie-bag’ which included a CD and apromotional t-shirt for Will and Jayden’s newfilm “After Earth”.

Thanks to everyone who was involved.

On Monday the 15th of July and Tuesdaythe 16th of July a group representingFuture Foundation’s Legacy CareerProject came into Heathcote School topromote the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Nine members of the grouphad done incredible things(like eating a shark andcoming second in a surfingcompetition in South Africa). One of the visitors, Steve, spoke to students his speechincluded manydemonstrations, one ofwhich took an unsuspectingvictim (Gemma Lake) andmanipulated her, he fooledher into thinking that a tenpound note was somethingintimidating. However, afterher terrifying experienceshe was rewarded with theten pounds.

The whole of Year 8 took part in a challenge set by thefounder of Ape Media, it was to create an enterprise thatwould be community service, they only had a day to dothis. Year eight was split into twelve groups and went towork. In each room, two groups competed against eachother to see who would go on to compete against theother five groups during the ‘assembly’ at the end of theday. The winners were team ‘Legacy of Logic’ whocreated an Olympic based museum.

Future Foundations is a group designed to help youngpeople reach their potential. They are an independenttraining organisation focused on personal, academic andleadership development in young people. They work withschools/ youth organisations directly or sometimes

groups of schools. They also workwith individual students who apply totake part in their open programmes. They work with the public sector andlarge youth organisations who arepartners/funders of their programs.

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Parkwill create thousands of jobsincluding jobs in the surroundingarea. The Legacy Development

Corporation was created to make sure that many localpeople fill those roles in the future. This will be achievedwith a consortium (made up of Future Foundations,Brightside, The International Centre for GuidanceStudies and CC lab) of educational groups. They work toensure that school children are inspired by jobs that willbe created by the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, andencourage them to choose the correct subjects to study.

In glorious sunshine in October, 57 Year 11Geography students spent two very productive dayscollecting their fieldwork data at Loughton Brook,Epping Forest.

The purpose of the fieldtrip was to prepare studentsfor their geography controlled assessment which isworth 25% of their final GCSE qualification. Thestudents were taught by the experienced FSC fieldteachers who directed the course in order toanswer the key question: ‘Does a river’s width, depth and velocity always increase downstream?’

All students worked extremely hard collecting rivermeasurements at five different sites within theforest and then working on their write up back inthe centre’s classroom.

I cannot commend the students enough on howwell they represented Heathcote Secondary Schooland it was a pleasure to see how maturely theyworked in teams in the outdoors.

Well done Year 11 Geographers!

A homework projectfor year 7 Historystudents producedsome eye-catchingresults and displayedthe talent ofHeathcote’s buddinghistorians. Taskedwith presenting some information on theirfamily history or their local area in a way which wasappealing and educational, many students steppedup to the mark with innovative posters andcolourful booklets.

Michael Stanway went full steam ahead to top marks witha stunning ship-based poster detailing his grandfather’stravels from Bolton to New Zealand via the Norwegianfjords during his days as a sailor.

Continuing the theme of travel, MoriahSanusi takes us on a journey from Nigeriato England, where we learn about hergrandmother’s hometown and about the country itself.

Jayden Finn’s project focussed a littlecloser to home, outlining the historyof Walthamstow’s Vestry HouseMuseum and its history. Hisinformative poster includes copies ofthe original regulations from its time as a workhouse, aswell as photographs of its current guise as a museum.

Oliver Shaw focuses on his great-grandad, and how hearrived in Britain as a captured Germansoldier in the Second World War, andliked it so much he decided to stay inthe area.

On a similar note, Eleanor Harveytracked the progress of her great-grandad from 1930s Ukraine, via the Second World Warand captivity in Austria all the way to Chingford!

Finally, Nathan Loukil’s booklet and accompanying postertell a wonderful family tale linking together Tunisia andEngland, circus acrobats, zoo-keepers and shop-owners,and highlighting the fascinating family backgrounds ofHeathcote’s pupils.

Some more examples of these great Year 7 projects canbe seen on display in the Humanities corridor, comealong and see for yourself!

The school achieved funding for a visit to the EuropeanParliament in Brussels. This was to support an element of the‘Certificate of Personal Effectiveness’ course which is a studyof International Links. Students who were part of the school’sRestorative Practice group were also invited, along withprefects who have made a particular contribution to the schoolin 2012/2013. We were invited as guests of Claude Moraes, oneof the Members of the European Parliament for London.

We left school at 6.30am and journeyed to catch the Eurostarfrom London St Pancras, arriving in Brussels at 11.30am (localtime). When we arrived in Brussels we did some sightseeingand had lunch in the very beautiful Parc Royal de Bruxelles.Unfortunately the day was dull and overcast and a light drizzleturned to very heavy rain. Happily we had eaten our lunchbefore this happened.

In the afternoon we went to the Parliament Museum, and thestudents walked through an interactive display showing thedevelopment of the European Union over the years since theFirst World War.

We then went into the Parliament itself and were greeted byGareth Lewis, one of Claude Moraes' staff. He brought usthrough the Parliament and up to one of the meeting rooms.

There we were given an informative presentation by one of theParliament's tour team. The group also met with MaryHoneyball, MEP for London and Michael Cashman, MEP forWest Midlands. The students were delighted to learn about thelife of the MEPs and were very grateful that both MsHoneyball and Mr Cashmans were able to give up theirvaluable time for us.

A group of students then went into the Parliament and visitedthe main debating chamber and the Parliament's media centre.

Following that we had a short period for shopping in GrandPlace before sharing a splendid meal together in one of themany restaurants in the central area. This left us having to rushthrough to the station to pick up the return Eurostar. Weexperienced some delays going through ‘Border Control’ andstudents learned, through first-hand experience, howimportant it is to have all documents in place when travelling.

The students involved have written to thank the staff from MrMoraes' office and to the Parliament staff for their help inorganising the trip. We hope to maintain Heathcotes' link withthe Parliament, so look for further information in future issueof the Newsletter.
