We’re delighted to welcome Sophie Smith, localswimming star, as our newest 'be healthy, beheard' member. Fifteen year old Sophie, won thisyear’s 'Leicester Mercury Young Sportswoman ofthe Year' Award, and tells us about how shekeeps healthy, and her preparations for the2012 Olympics.

Q. When did you first become interested in swimming?

A. At primary school. I started doing lessons and wasthen invited to join the Hinckley swimming club. From there, I progressed to the City of LeicesterSwimming Club.

Q. How often do you train?

A. I swim for about 15 hours each week, for 50 weeksof the year. I do two sessions a week before schoolwhich means I have to wake up at 4.45am and fiveevening sessions from 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

Q. How do you keep motivated?

A. I do get really tired, but my ambition to succeeddrives me and keeps me going.

Q. What do you eat to keep you healthy?

A. I eat a lot of fruit. I burn a lot of calories duringtraining so I make sure I eat carbohydratesthroughout the day to keep my energy levels up. Ialso eat high protein meals after training to help mymuscles to recover and protein milkshakes.

A typical breakfast for me is shredded wheat beforeand after my morning session, and when I get toschool I normally eat an orange and some toast.

At lunch I often have pasta followed by a banana, andI tend to eat pasta for my main evening meal as well.If I fancy a snack during the day I’ll choose a cereal bar.

Q. How would you encourage others to be moreactive and get fit?

A. Swimming is great exercise for people of all ages, butif you go to your local leisure centre you will find lotsof local clubs and different ways to get involved inphysical activity.

Q. What does the prospect of going to theOlympics mean to you?

A. I’m currently training for the 2012 and 2016Olympics and the prospect of going meanseverything to me – it’s the pinnacle of any athlete’scareer and would be one of the greatest experiencesof my life if I made it.

National Osteoporosis Month If you want to protect your bones in the future, regular exercise and a healthy diet are importantnow. Taking regular exercise and adopting ahealthy lifestyle can delay the possible onset ofosteoporosis and slow the rate at which bonesbecome more fragile.

Osteoporosis, which causes bones to become thin andweak, affects around three million people in the UKand is responsible for 230,000 fractures every year –most commonly resulting in broken wrists, hips andspinal bones.

The condition happens more commonly in old age, asthe body becomes less able to replace worn out boneand is more susceptible to fractures. Women have a

greater risk of osteoporosisas changes in hormonelevels can affect bonestrength, with falling levels of oestrogen afterthe menopause causing bones to thin quickly.

Exercises which can help to improve bone densityinclude weight bearing ones for your legs and feet –such as running, dancing and aerobics – andresistance work – like press-ups, weight lifting orusing weight equipment at the gym.

Also limiting how much you drink, giving up smoking, remaining at a healthy weight and getting plenty ofcalcium will all help.

Are your child’s immunisations up to date?

Immunising your child against preventable diseases isone of the most important things you can do for them. When they are babies and young children, they arevulnerable to diseases that have almost disappeared inthe UK due to the immunisation programme.

To ensure your child receives the best protection, theymust receive the full course of immunisations.

You might think that missing one will not do any harmbut this is not the case. Doses are carefully measured andif your child does not receive all of them they will not beable to fight diseases if they come into contact with them.

Your baby or child may haveside effects such as a sorearm, irritability or a slighttemperature after beingimmunised. These soondisappear and are minorcompared to some of thediseases being prevented.

For more information, ask your health visitor, yourpractice nurse, or visit the immunisation web site at www.immunisation.nhs.ukFor a more detailed chart visit www.lcr.nhs.uk

People living in Market Harborough gave theirviews on local hospital services, as the board ofNHS Leicestershire County and Rutlandexplained how it intends to try and securethird-party finance from a developer in order toboost services on the St Luke’s site.

More than 100 members of the public attended May’strust board meeting, which was held in MarketHarborough, where they heard that the PCT wants tosecure interest from a third-party developer andconsolidate community, mental health and primary careservices on the St Luke’s site within a new-build facilitycosting around £7.1 million.

This would create an integrated primary care andcommunity hospital hub at St Luke’s, offering moreclinical care closer to home, as well as the opportunity torelease funds from the sale of the district hospital site. However, it would also depend upon ensuring thatsignificantly more people use St Luke’s than currently.

The meeting was told that due to the current financialclimate, there was not enough NHS capital fundingavailable for NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland topay for the scheme.

Karl Simkins, NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland’sdirector of finance, said: “Current indications suggestthat there are developers who would be interested inproviding finance at an acceptable cost.

“The trust must demonstrate that this deal would deliverbetter value for money than an NHS-funded solutionand a formal tender and negotiation period would berequired which would take around eight to 12 months.

“If third party finance is not available then the twohospitals in Market Harborough will be maintained toensure they are fit for 21st century care.”

Currently a £2.3m endoscopy and treatment unit isbeing developed on the St Luke’s site and the trustexpects the building to be handed over later thissummer. The unit will enable local people to undergodiagnostic tests and minor procedures closer to home.

And the winners are…

Summer sun safetyWith the arrival of summer and the sun turningup its heat, now is the time to make sure you are protecting yourself and your family againstskin cancer.

At NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland we’reurging everyone to be SunSmart this year:

pend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm

emember to take extra care with children

hen use a high factor sunscreen

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UKand is caused by damage from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV)rays which penetrate deep into the skin and damage cells, which are then at risk of becoming cancerous. You can’tfeel UV rays damaging your skin, and it happens evenwhen the sun doesn’t feel hot, so it is important to takeextra care when exposing your skin in the summer.

Find out more about skin cancer, including a useful selfassessment tool at: www.nhs.uk/conditions/cancer-of-the-skin

Over 2,000 deaths happen each year in the UK as aresult of skin cancer, and getting sunburn as a childcan increase your risk of developing skin cancer laterin life – which is why it is always important to protectyour skin in childhood and beyond.

People at risk include:l those with fair skin that burns in strong sun l people with red or fair hair l anyone with a lot of moles or freckles l those with a personal or family history of skin cancerl people who have already had sunburn, especially

when young

What to do if you do get sunburnt:l cool your skin down by dabbing it with a cool, wet

towel, or if particularly bad try a quick cold showerl drink plenty of fluids to keep hydratedl apply calamine or after-sun lotionl adults can take paracetamol or ibuprofen to help

relieve pain and reduce swellingl stay out of the sun until the sunburn has healedl watch out for heat exhaustion or heatstroke –

symptoms include headaches, dizziness, feeling orbeing sick, muscle weakness or cramps, tiredness and a high temperature

If you’re preparing to jet off to Europe this summer, remember to make sure you pack your European HealthInsurance Card (EHIC). The free card offers travellers accessto reduced cost medical treatment and can prevent EUcitizens who are visiting Europe from being hit with a largemedical bill.

If you already have an EHIC card, make sure it is still in date, and remember that the card is not a substitute for travelinsurance. The card is valid for up to five years and you can

apply for a new one up to six months before the expiry date.

You can apply for an EHIC card for yourself or on behalf oryour partner and children and will need to supply details ofyour NHS or National Insurance numbers, as well aspersonal details for each applicant.

Applications can be made online by visitingwww.ehic.org.uk or by calling 0845 606 2030 orpicking up a form available at some post offices.

Your pharmacist could help with hay fever symptoms

Remember your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Summer can spell misery for anyone with hayfever, but you could find relief is available justby visiting your local pharmacist.

Kim Dunn, head of pharmacy and service development atNHS Leicestershire County and Rutland, said: “With thepollen season lasting from March to October it can seemthat there is little respite for hay fever sufferers – withrunny eyes, sleepless nights, bunged up noses andheadaches all common side effects.

“Symptoms are worse on hot, sunny days. Pollen isreleased in the morning and, as the air warms up, it getscarried up into the air, coming back down in the eveningas the air cools.

“Many hay fever sufferers can really struggle when pollenlevels are high, but your local pharmacist could help youto find something which will alleviate your symptoms andmake it easier to cope.”

Over-the-counter remedies include antihistamines whichblock the action of the chemical histamine, which is releasedafter the body is exposed to pollen and causes sneezes anditchy, watery eyes. Steroid nasal sprays are also an effectiveway of treating blocked noses caused by hay fever, but cantake several days to act and need to be taken continually forseveral weeks as their effect builds up over time.

Try these tips to reduce your contact with pollen:l keep windows closed at night to stop pollen getting inl wear wrap-around sunglasses to protect your eyesl smear petroleum jelly around the inside of your nose

to trap pollen and stop it being inhaledl wash your hair, hands and face after being outside

and change your clothesl try not to dry your clothes outdoorsl keep car windows shut when drivingl avoid mowing the grass or working in the garden

and stay away from large grassy areas

Be heard – your feedbackThe engagement team has been very busygetting feedback from our members and thepublic on a variety of topics over the last fewmonths. This feedback is vital in helping us toplan services and we welcome your views. Hereis an update on how you are helping us to shapethe services we provide.

Personalised care plansPatients with long-term health conditions, carers, friends and family have all had their say on how careplans should be delivered in the future. During Marchthis year we invited everyone with an interest inmanaging long-term conditions to fill in aquestionnaire. The aim was to put together a careplan to help patients manage their condition day today, giving them information and support at the righttime and helping them to achieve personal goals.

The online survey was completed by 142 people, withthe majority (45 per cent) saying it should be called apersonalised care plan.

When asked how the care plan should be puttogether, 34 per cent said a booklet versioncompleted in partnership with a healthcareprofessional, with 27 per cent opting for an electronicversion and 27 per cent asking for a computer print-out version after talks with healthcare staff.

Useful contacts and information on conditions andsymptoms were selected as the most popular items tobe included in a personalised care plan. You can readthe full results on our website at www.lcr.nhs.uk

Dental access questionnaireIt’s check-up time on how easy it is to access anNHS dentist, as we ask people to take part in aquestionnaire and help shape the future of NHSdental services.

We’re committed to making sure that everyone whowants to access NHS dental services is able to by March2011 and have invested considerable funding to ensurethere is good access to services across Leicestershirecounty and Rutland.

Nationally, research shows that members of the publicthink they may struggle to access an NHS dentist, which iswhy we want to make sure that people understand howthey can access the dental services available to them.

The local questionnaire asks when people last tried to getan NHS dental appointment, what type of appointment itwas, and if someone hasn't tried to see a dentist in thelast two years, the reasons why they haven't. We are alsokeen to find out which days and at which times peoplewould most like to use NHS dental services, if they areexperiencing any barriers to accessing services, and howlong patients with good oral health would be prepared towait for check-ups.

The closing date for returning the questionnaire is 31 July2010 and it can be found at:www.lcr.nhs.uk/_Gettinginvolved-Consultationsandquestionnaires-2010-NHSdentistry.aspx

To find an NHS dentist in your area call 01509 567757 oremail [email protected]

Leicestershire LINk – working with youWe are delighted to welcome lots of newmembers to the Leicestershire Local InvolvementNetwork (LINk) following responses to a recentjoint ‘be healthy, be heard’ letter. By joining theLINk you really can help improve both health andsocial care provision in Leicestershire county, andinfluence how services are run.

It’s easy to get involved and to have your say. Thereare various groups you can join focusing on topicssuch as carers, mental health services, adult socialcare services, and young people’s health. There isalso the option to start your own group with thehelp of the LINk if you feel strongly about a servicewhere you have been affected.

In early July, the LINk will be holding an eventfocusing on services for people with neurologicalconditions, which include multiple sclerosis, epilepsy,Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease andlesser known conditions such as progressivesupranuclear palsy and fibromyalgia. Theseconditions affect significant numbers of people butthey often have a low profile in terms of serviceprovision. We will be inviting a range of healthspeakers and there will be information about servicesand opportunities to put questions to senior NHSstaff. We will send out more information once thedate and venue are confirmed.

To find out more about Leicestershire LINk activities, how you can be involved, or if you have any issuesyou want to let us know about, please contact us on0116 229 3103 or [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.

Rutland LINk– your feedbackmakes a difference“Give your GP surgery feedback if you want to suggestways to improve the services they provide or the care youhad in hospital. It’s only if people give that feedback thatthings can be improved,” said Rutland GP Dr Sue Selmeswhen she spoke to members of Rutland LocalInvolvement Network (LINk) in May.

Dr Selmes chairs the Rutland Medical Group, theconsortium through which Rutland GPs work together. She was invited to talk to LINk members about howurgent care and minor injuries services are delivered inRutland and how GPs view proposed changes. Dr Selmesencouraged the LINk to collate the views of the localcommunity on the issues.

After the meeting Rutland LINk chair RosemarieWhittaker said: “Dr Selmes gave us a valuable andhonest insight into the practical issues which GPs and thePCT face on urgent care and out of hours issues. Usingour networks, we can now build a broader picture ofhow local people feel about these services.”

Rutland LINk now has 120 members, many of themactive in exploring health and social care issues. The100th member, June Hawkins, was presented with a firstaid kit at an informal LINk get-together in April.
