    registeredwalkers.

    Healthy Start had a sign-up drive/hat day on

    parcipants for the

    2011 Highmark Healthy

    Walk. She registered

    100 parcipants. 50

    employees, family and

    friends were registered

    up day.

    The 2012 5k walk will

    begin at 9 a.m. at Stage AE on the North Shore, with a shorter one

    mile walk beginning at 9:15 a.m. At the conclusion of the walk, food,

    beverages, music, acvites and prize drawings will be held. Visit www

    Open Arms Malawi Orphanage Receives Gifts

    On December 1st, 2011, Healthy Start, Inc. raisedawareness for World Aids Day by donang school

    supplies, toysand a poron of the money collected

    weekly for Dress Down Fridays to the Open Arms

    Malawi orphanage, which takes care of children

    whose parents have died of AIDS. The orphanage

    receivedthegisandsentpicturesofthechildren

    enjoying them. Healthy Start would like to thank

    all who donated. We are proud to support the

    Malawi Foundaon with connued donaons in

    One eye may

    be turned all

    of the me or

    only some of

    the me. Most

    peoplewhohavestrabismusareusuallybornwithit

    ordevelopitatanearlyage.However,someformsof

    strabismusoccurlaterinlife.

    SymptomS: Newborns oen have crossed eyes

    tosomedegree dueto underdeveloped vision, but

    thisusuallydisappearsbytheageof3to4months.

    True strabismus does not disappear as the childgrows. If you think your child is showing signs of

    truestrabismus,itisimportanttoseektheadviceof

    an eye care professional. The earlier the detecon

    andtreatment, thebeer thechilds vision willbe.

    Symptomstowatchoutforinclude:Eyesthatappear

    crossed,Eyesthatdonotaligninthesamedirecon,

    Eyesthatdonotmovetogether,Doublevision,Vision

    inonlyoneeye,withlossofdepthpercepon.

    CauSeS:Strabismusiscausedbyaweakeyemuscle

    or a weak signal from the nerve that controls the

    eye muscle. Frequently, uncorrected farsightedness

    andfocusingproblemsaretheunderlyingcausesof

    strabismusinchildren.Somechildrenarebornwith

    a defecve visual processing center in the brain.

    Strabismusmayalsodevelopifachildisbornwitha

    cataract.ItiscommonincondionssuchasDownssyndromeandcerebralpalsy.Bleedinginthebrain,a

    braintumor,nervoussystemdisorders,diabetes,high

    blood pressure, myasthenia gravis, thyroid disease

    andseverevisionlosscanalsocausestrabismus.

    DiagnoSiS: Besidesparents,apediatricianorfamily

    doctorisoentherstpersontodetectstrabismus.

    A baby whose eyes do not appear straight by the age

    of3 to4 months should be examined. To properly

    diagnose strabismus, a complete eye examinaon

    mustbeperformedbyaneyedoctor.Earlydiagnosis

    isveryimportant,assomeeyeturnsmaybearesult

    ofaseriousmedicalcondion.Strabismusthatisnot

    treatedearlyinachildslifemaycauseamblyopia(lazy

    eye),acondioninwhichvisiondevelopspoorly.In

    addion,thecosmecappearanceofstrabismusmay

    causealackofself-esteem.

    treatment: Strabismus cannot be outgrown.Treatment to straighten the eyes is required.

    Treatmentwilldependonthetypeofstrabismusand

    itscause:

    Glassesmaybeprescribedtoimprovefocusingand

    enable the eyes to straighten.

    Patchingthegoodeyewillforceapaenttouse

    theaectedeye.Patchingwillimprovethechancesof

    normalvisiontodevelop.

    Eyedropsmaybeusedtoblurthegoodeye,forcing

    theaectedeyetobeused.(Thisachievesthesame

    resultaspatching.)

    Eyemusclesurgerymaybeanoponifnon-surgical

    treatmentsdonotwork.

    Some eye doctors may prescribe eye exercises

    beforeoraersurgery
