Healthy Habits for Teens

This organization will target the School-aged to Adolescent population and will be geared toward providing education and resources to promote healthy lifestyles and nutrition within this age group.

Assessment

A study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that 14.2% of Michigan adolescents in grades 9-12 are overweight and 11.9% are obese.

They also reported that 16.3% of children ages 2-5 are overweight and 13.3% are obese.

In 2010 27.5% of adults in Kent County alone suffer from obesity. (County Of Kent, 2013)

Analysis

With statistics such as those provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and by Kent County, it is apparent that there is a need for additional education and activity for adolescents and school aged children.

Mission Statement

Healthy Habits for Teens will help the children in our area fight the effects and complications of obesity by making healthier food choices and increasing their physical activity.

• We are advocates and role models for healthy lifestyles across a lifespan through our actions and our words.

Philosophy

“Good nutrition and plenty of exercise are the building blocks for strong growth, healthy development and lifelong wellbeing for children” (American Psychological Association, 2013).

Basis for Goals and Objectives

The children of Kent County deserve a program that includes fun activities and education to develop proper nutrition habits and increase exercise.

Through Healthy Habits for Teens, Kent County adolescents and teens will gain skills and passion that will continue to promote healthy lifestyles not only for themselves but for their families, friends and community as well.

Goals

Demonstrate healthy daily activities and healthy food choices to teens in Kent County. 

Increase programs for teens that improve knowledge on healthy diet and lifestyle. 

Decrease obesity in teens and adolescents.Provide activities and education for teens and

families to increase interest in healthier lifestyles.Increase awareness of potential health risks

associated with obesity and/or poor nutrition.Educate teens and parents on eating disorders

and associated risks.

Objectives

Decrease childhood obesity in Kent County by 10%

At least 50% of teens will be able to identify a healthy lifestyle

Improve 2 community parks/playgrounds Eliminate high sugar drinks/foods in schoolsCoordinate 3 community events (walk-a-thon,

health fair and after school event)Students to have 2 hours of health

instruction/activity each week in schoolMonthly news letters

All individuals need to be disciplined and highly motivated as well as have a desire to improve the health and lives of teens in the community

Budget

$456,050 Startup budget for the first year.

$397,550 Annual Budget

Startup costs include setup such as rent, utilities, maintenance of facilities, IT, office supplies, and vehicles

Annual costs include salary of staff, legal, professional, and advertising fees.

Budget Continued

This budget was constructed using current competitive prices, rates and wages.

After the initial startup cost, the bulk of the annual costs consist of employee salaries.

Partnerships with local school employees, as well as volunteers will help to keeps costs down.

Healthy Habits for Teens will

• Create an environment to increase the overall health of communities.

• Promote holistic wellness, exercise, and nutrition.

Create healthy habits for teens that they will benefit from for the rest of their lives.

Allow people more control of their lives by promoting overall health and health education.
