Respect, Responsibility, Resilience. Dear Parents and Carers, Winter Holiday Break Last day of school is Friday 3 July 2020. Students resume Term 3 on Tuesday 21 July 2020; our previously advertised dates will not proceed due to Covid-19 restrictions. Our teachers will participate in professional development on Monday 20 July. Capturing your thoughts and experience At Oakhill Drive Public School, we are beginning to collect data to inform our School Improvement Plan (SIP). This data will capture the thoughts and experiences of our parent, student and teacher stakeholders. Future planning decisions about learning, wellbeing and system organisation will be based on current research and community feedback. A survey link will be sent to all families through Skoolbag, seeking your participation. We look forward to your input. Student Representative Council (SRC) Last week we recognised the students elected by their class peers K-6 to represent them on the student representative council. These elections were held mid Term 1. However, with the Covid-19 crisis we were unable to present these student’s their badges until now. Whilst we were unable to have a school assembly, each student, was recognised in their class and were presented their badge by Mrs Torney, Mrs Paris and myself in the hall. We will be sharing photos of this presentation with the parents of these students. Congratulations to these worthy recipients. Hygiene at School School students do not need to follow strict adult physical distancing guidelines, but should follow good hygiene practices like: regularly washing hands avoiding sharing drinks or foods coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or a tissue which should be discarded immediately filling water bottles from taps rather than using the bubbler directly At Oakhill Drive Public School, we have installed self-operating hand sanitiser dispenses. These are located throughout the school on external walls for easy access to all students. Library We encourage all students to borrow books from our library to read at home. The library is open every lunch time for students to borrow and return. Reading for pleasure is a wonderful habit to model and share with our children. Books returned to school are kept in isolation for 24 hours prior to being returned to the shelves, as per DoE hygiene guidelines. These will be available on the Parent Portal early next term. Please take a moment to check your access to the portal at this time, so that any concerns can be addressed well before reports are available. Kindergarten families and new families to the school this year, will need to register on the portal to gain access. Please see the information attached to this newsletter about how to register. The Portal also shows a record of the awards that your child has received during their time at Oakhill Drive Public School. I urge all parents to check their access now, rather than at the end of the term. Please contact me if you have any concerns via email at [email protected] Helen Paris Deputy Principal

    OAKHILL DRIVE PUBLIC SCHOOL

    Dear Parents/Carers

At Oakhill Drive Public School, parents can access their

child’s reports and awards records via the Parent Portal.

Student reports include: Semesters 1 & 2 Class Reports, Band Reports, EAL Reports and Early Stage 1

    (Kindergarten) Best Start Reports.

As a new parent to Oakhill Drive Public School, you will need to register for the Parent Portal to have access

to any information relevant to your child. After registering for access, no further action is needed and you

can access at any time, especially when reports are available.

To access the portal, parents must have an email address registered with the school. This should have been

provided to the school via your child’s enrolment form. There may be some family circumstances in which

both parents may require their own access to the portal. This can be done if both email addresses are

    registered with the school.

Please allow approximately one week from the day your child starts at Oakhill Drive Public School before

you try to register for the portal. This will allow your child’s details to come across to all the data systems in

    the school.

The Parent Portal can be accessed by following these instructions:

    1. Go to the Parent Portal https://www.impromation.com.au/portal4parents/?schid=4604

    2. Click on the ‘Don’t have a password? Get Registered’ link at the bottom of the portal sign-in page, then enter your email address

    3. Parents with no current portal account or incomplete portal accounts will receive a ‘Getting Started’ email which will guide them through the registration process.

During the registration process, parents will receive an email with instructions and a default password to use

initially. This will give access to the portal to allow them to set up their own password which will be linked to

    that email address.

After the registration process is complete, parents can access the portal using their own email address as

the Username and their newly set-up password.

Please note your password in a safe place for future reference when accessing the portal. Helen Paris

Learning from Covid-19 Remote learning provided a valuable opportunity for students, teachers and parents to experience learning in a very different way. Solutions were quickly developed to overcome the many challenges that we were all faced with. We are now going to capture our thoughts about this experience. Some aspects of school during Covid-19 were a highly positive change, and there may be opportunity to use this as a kickstart to a new or adjusted way of doing things. Please help us gain a balanced perspective by taking part in the parent survey. The link to the survey will be sent via Skoolbag. Learning through Play According to Albert Einstein, “Play is the highest form of research.” Play feels fun and enjoyable and it evolves spontaneously, rather than giving children a script to follow. As play is driven by intrinsic motivation about what the child wants to do, it creates a risk-free environment where they can experiment and try new ideas. When given free choice in play, children are learning many fundamental skills. Our kindergarten children can be seen here learning skills as budding engineers, mathematicians, actors and playwrights!

There have been some important changes to the rules for the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). These changes support students who have been participating in the Challenge from home, and those students who are having difficulty accessing books on the booklist. Key changes include:

    • All students will be able to include 10 choice books on their 2020 Student reading records.

    • All students will be able to include books read as part of collaborative reading with teachers or parents/carers, either in person or online.

    • Students who do not complete the Challenge in 2020 will not be disadvantaged from achieving cumulative PRC awards in the future.

The following table may also be helpful:

Challenge Number of Books you Must read

    Minimum number of PRC books

    Maximum number of

    Personal Choice books

    PRC booklists you can read

    from

    K-2 30 20 10 K-2, 3-4, 5-6

    3-4 20 10 10 3-4, 5-6, 7-9

    5-6 20 10 10 5-6, 7-9

Please visit the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge website at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html for a complete list of the updated rules. Here is an update on our students’ progress: Students in years K-2

    • Teachers at our school have been reading books from the booklist to students in years K-2 at school. They are currently at about the halfway mark in the Challenge. Once all books have been read, the school will add the books to the reading logs of K-2 students on their behalf.

    Students in years 3-6

    • Some students have been read PRC books in class. These books, under the rule change, are allowed to count towards the Challenge.

    • PRC books listened to through the April to May trial of ‘Story Box Library’ also count towards the Challenge.

    • Please let your class teacher know if you are short of PRC books so I can provide some quick-reads to your class teacher.

    • Note that students in years 3-6 must enter their own reading log online through the PRC website. Importantly, it is not too late to join. Students have until 28th August 2020 (11:59pm) to upload their completed reading logs. Please do not hesitate to contact me via the school office should you require any further support to complete this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. Happy reading!
