NEW Sunday Night Small Group

We’re forming a new Small Group to study Unafraid, the

new book by Adam Hamilton. This 5-week small group

study is for anyone struggling with fear, worry or anxiety; or

for anyone wondering how families and communities can

live as peacemakers in troubled times. This group will meet

on Sunday Nights. Let us know you are interested by stopping by the Connections

Table after worship, by emailing shane@chpres.org, or by texting “New Sunday

Jam (Jesus and Music)

Preschoolers & Elementary children have been enjoying games & activities with Ms.

Lizzie and music with Ms. Carlene on Wednesday evenings. If you have a child ages 3

through grade 5, join the fun with JAM (Jesus and Music), Wednesdays from 5:15-

6:30.

Trunk or Treat

Mark your calendars, invite your friends...it’s time for our annual Trunk or Treat

Celebration! In order to host this community event we need your help. This year our

event will be held in the gym. We need more crazy and creative tables than ever!

Consider decorating a table and handing out candy to lots of wonderful, candy-loving

kids. We promise you will have fun. Please have participating tables set up in the

gym by 4:30pm, on Saturday, October 27. We also need extra candy. Candy

donations may be dropped off in the designated buckets provided outside the gym

Gratitude

Nearly a month and 15 years ago I began my

time with CHPC as a lowly Youth Ministry

intern. I was hired under the previous interim

minister, Rev. Dr. Bob Lowry. A few months later

Tom joined the staff and began his tenure as

Head Pastor (and my mentor). Fifteen years in

ministry at one church is a long time- long

enough to make it hard to remember those early

days.

During that first year I was still a full time

graduate student, as well as leading our Youth

Ministry. After I finished school I began the

process of transferring my ordination to the

Presbyterian Church (USA), which meant taking 5

different ordination exams. Clergy commonly

referred to this process as ritualistic

hazing. After completing my hazing I served as a

stated pastor for a few years. Then, in 2009 you

called me as your Associate Pastor, a position I’ve

served in ever since. (continued on page 2)

Tom’s recent retirement brought back many memories over the past 15

years, and one thing stood out among those memories, a consistent thread

running throughout the years… The consistent, loving presence of this

congregation in my life.

Every memory was full of treasures. I saw memories of working alongside

families and students. I saw the faith of students begin to take shape and

then fully become their own. I heard the sounds of countless songs played

with the praise band. I heard the laughter of conversations in small

groups. I remembered the prayers of faithful leaders making hard choices.

You’ve known me as a young adult to whatever you want to call me

now. You’ve been with me through 2 major health scares. You’ve known

me before and after marriage, and before and after fatherhood. There’s no

other way to say it than this. You are my brothers and sisters, my family…

my home. These memories brought out a profound sense of gratitude and

these simple words… I love my church.

Neighbor, the amazing documentary on

the exemplary life of one of our most

famous Presbyterians… Mr. (Fred)

Rodgers. We’ll have a free pizza dinner for

the whole family. Lizzie and Children’s

Ministry crew will be hosting a Kids Movie Party that same evening so kids

5th grade and younger can have a blast with their own movie party while the

Habitat Update

The Habitat house build is on the home

stretch! The dry wall is complete, walls are

being painted, and floors installed. We will

keep you updated as our partner churches

and Eastman continue to make progress

on this build. Thank you for your

continued support of this deserving

family.

Peace and Global Witness Offering

The Peace & Global Witness Offering draws Presbyterians together and provides

education and exposure to those who show us how to do this work well. It

allows us to create resources for dealing with conflict and nurturing

reconciliation, and stand in support of our global sisters and brothers, because

the peace of Christ belongs to people everywhere.

As we work to share Christ’s peace with one another, let’s share that peace with

those beyond our doors. Twenty-five percent of this offering will go to our mid

council, joining with other congregations in our area to support peacemaking

work in our region. The second 25 percent of this Offering stays with our

congregation, so that we can commit ourselves to active peacemaking.

And 50 percent of this Offering supports the active work for peace being done

by Presbyterians everywhere. As Presbyterians, we claim Jesus Christ as Prince

of Peace and pattern our lives in the compassion, kindness and grace that He

shows us.

Today we celebrate Peace and Global Witness Sunday. Please consider how you

can share in this work.
