Term 4 Week 11 December 2014
He came to Wauchope as the only Year 6 student from
Comboyne Public and today he is Dux of Wauchope High School
Daniel McMillan, the youngest of five children from the well known McMillan’s family dairy
farm at Comboyne, formalised his academic position at Wauchope High this week as dux,
with an ATAR of 96.3
Daniel performed strongly in the Sciences and Mathematics areas with band 6 in Chemistry,
Physics and Extension 2 (nominal) and band 5 in English Advanced. Daniel’s position of dux
follows achieving the status of top student in Year 10 and Year 11 during the last two years.
When he arrived at Wauchope High in 2009 , Daniel was the only student to come from
Year 6 at Comboyne Public and he has personified the true meaning of the quiet achiever
as he developed into a quietly confident and well mannered young man.
With older siblings who entered the professions of teaching, accountancy and video software development after also
graduating from Wauchope High School, Daniel has strong examples to follow. He hopes to head for Sydney University and
computer sciences.
Shannon Pritchard also achieved strong results, with an ATAR of 90.5 with her band 6 marks achieved in Extension 1 English
and PD/H/PE. Shannon also topped Biology.
Other students that recorded strong results including band 5s were Breanna Bax (Primary Industries and Human Services),
Jess Bloomfield in Biology, PD/H/PE and Advanced English, Blake Chambers (2 Unit Mathematics, PE/H/PD), Ashleigh
Etherington (2 Unit Maths and Hospitality), Corey Flanagan (2 Unit Mathematics and Human Services), Jess Flanagan (Music),
Katie Hey (Food Technology). Jaylee Ismay (Ancient History, Legal Studies and PD/H/PE), Cody Morris (Visual Arts), Shenay
Reynolds (Hospitality Exam), Kodie Richmond (English Advanced), Cameron Stewart (Metals and Engineering), Jess Styles
(2 Unit Mathematics, PE/H/PD), Kim Tout (Senior Science, Community and Family Studies), Emily Williams (Drama, Senior
Science).
In the first year of the regional Primary Industries Trade Training Centre at Wauchope High School, Emily Buchtmann (Port
Macquarie High) gained first place ,a band 6 and PI teacher Mr Starr was pleased with the results of the other students.
While the year 12 students will be now planning their futures based on their results, for some the job is a little easier with
university acceptance from early entry already granted, some depending on their ATAR and some not.
Southern Cross University: Bachelor of Nursing. Emily Williams, Hannah Stallebrass, Jessica Styles
Southern Cross University: Bachelor of Arts Kimberly Tout, Shenay Reynolds
Southern Cross University: Bachelor of Psychological Science
Charles Sturt University : Many students were accepted to more than one course on early entry, many based on their ATAR
outcome. The students were Ashleigh Kiem, Blake Chambers, Breanna Bax, Cody Morris, Corey Flanagan, Dakota Rumbel,
Hannah Stallebrass, Jake Hoffman, Jaylee Ismay, Jessica Styles, Jessica Bloomfield, Kimberly Tout, Katie Hey, Kodie
Richmond, Nathan Lambert
The University of New England have also accepted a number of students through early entry.
While the Class of 2014 are reflecting on their marks and career options, students
heading for the 2015 HSC have already completed a full term’s work.
The 2015 HSC Biology class (left) were photographed on an outdoor activity
recently. Mel Parsons was providing a little Christmas spirit around the school in
her Santa cap. Mel was one of the students nominated for the 2014 Zonta award
because she balances her studies with involvement and encouragement of others in
the school body. Surrounding her are other talented and focused Year 11 students,
Hanna, Gus, Sarah, Caitlin, Reilly, Jasmin and Dane (obviously thinking about his
next twelve months).
Others are working towards the 2015 HSC
Congratulations
to Daniel and
all of Year 12!
Shannon and Daniel (Dux)
Welcome to the next P & C Meeting : Tuesday 17th February , Common Room 7pm.
From the Principal… As we come to the end of the 2014 school year I would like to congratulate the staff and students on what has been
a highly successful year for students and staff.
Our Year 12 students have, as a cohort, achieved some excellent results in this year’s HSC, with many students I
have spoken to this morning speaking positively about getting into their chosen course at University or TAFE in 2015.
A significant number of students are looking forward to starting their apprenticeships in 2015 and all Year 12
students can be confident that they are leaving Wauchope High School better prepared for the challenges they set
themselves in coming years. Well done and best wishes for the future.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the staff at Wauchope High School who have not only welcomed me so
warmly this year but have proven that they are a highly professional, dedicated and passionate group of educators.
They have helped me find my way in a new school, challenged my thinking at times and taken on with gusto the
challenges I have set for them. Thank you and I look forward to exciting times ahead for our school.
In 2015 we will continue the message that in order to maximise student potential every student must be at school
every day and be in every lesson. I seek your full and ongoing support in assisting us to ensure that your child
achieves their full potential – better than their best.
We will be farewelling a number of staff in coming weeks and months and I will say more about each individual as
they leave us to take a new chapter in their lives. Mrs Joan Wilson has taken the decision not to return next year and
I would like to thank her for her many years of dedication as a science teacher at our school and for her extra work
on the Newsletter and in ensuring the success of presentation night to name just a few of the roles she freely
undertook. We wish her well in the future.
Best wishes for the holiday season and please use the time to relax and spend time with family and friends. Years 7,
11 and 12 will return to school on January 28 and Years 8, 9 and 10 on January 29. I look forward to everyone’s safe
return in 2015 and the start an exciting year for Wauchope High School.
Regards Glen Sawle
Legal Studies visit to gaol
It always makes a person a bit anxious if the think they are going to court and gaol, but for the 2015 HSC
Legal Studies class who recently visited Wauchope court house and then Kempsey gaol it was more of a
time to understand the legal implications and consequences of legal processes. The students watched a
few cases get resolved before listening to the Magistrate , Mr Hodgeson discuss his background and role
in the legal system. The visit to the gaol was informative with 2 “trustees “ talking about the path they took
to end up in the “big house”. All returned safely to school and vowed never to return to the gaol. Special
thanks go to Mel Jones, Mrs Thornton and Whitney Shaw for accompanying the students on the day.
Mr Houlahan, Legal Studies teacher.
Happy Year 12 students
who came to back for the
ATAR morning tea.
There was a general
feeling of students happy
with their results knowing
they have gained the
ATARs needed to get
into their courses at
many different
universities.
