Parent Teacher Evening Year 7-10 Tuesday 20th October
From the Principal: Today was a very special day as we celebrated the end of 13 years of schooling with the
graduating class of Year 12 2015. Their final assembly was well supported by family and
friends and included a number of heartfelt and moving speeches by students and
teachers as well as recognition of the significant achievements by a large number of
students over the past 12 months.
I would like to acknowledge the large amount of work done by staff in making sure that
the assembly and morning tea that followed went smoothly and was a fitting celebration
for students and their families. Thank you and well done.
In farewelling the 2015 Year 12 cohort we wish them well for the future and encourage
them to aim high, work hard and never give up on their dreams. We also hope that they
keep in touch with the school over the coming years and let us know of their
achievements and successes.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our new Student Leadership Team for 2015-16. Our new School Captains, Chloe Houseman and Dean Hollis will be ably assisted by our new Vice Captains, Samantha Mead and James Scott. Our congratulations also go to Maryjane Casey who was elected as our new SRC President. I look forward to working with this team over the coming 12 months. In passing I would also like to thank Eliza Colby, Willis Thompson, Riley Bromfield, Cameron Lindsay and Stephanie Hallam who have been a fantastic team to work with over the past 12 months. I would like to invite all parents to peruse our revised Student Representation Policy which was sent home with all students on Thursday. As indicated in the introduction to the documentation representing Wauchope High School is a privilege that students must earn through their effort, attitude and application, both within and outside of the classroom. While we encourage as many students as possible to try out for and participate in these activities this participation cannot be at the expense of their academic progress. We seek your support in ensuring that our students are successful in all aspects of their education. As we move into the school holiday break I would like to thank everyone for their work and support over the past 10 weeks. I encourage everyone to have a relaxing break, however, I do expect those students who still have HSC examinations to sit to use this time wisely in preparing for those examinations. We look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday 6
th October.
Regards Glen Sawle

This term in Science, year 8 students have been learning
about astronomy. As well as learning about modern astrono-
my, students were taught about Indigenous knowledge and
perspectives of the sky. One lesson involved a member of
the local indigenous community, Trish McInherny, telling
the story of ‘The Emu in the Sky’ and its significance to Abo-
riginal peoples throughout Australia. The lesson also offered students the opportunity to cre-
ate their own ochre paintings representing their personal relationships with the sky.
The culmination of the Sky Stories project was a stargazing night held at Sancrox Reserve,
which was attended by over 250 people from the local community. The evening involved some
sky stories and cultural activities with thanks to the Djiyagan Dhanbaan Choir and Dance
group, as well as the Wauchope High School dance group. Experts were also on hand from the
Mid North Coast Astronomy Group to provide instruction and advice on telescope setup and
use. It was a fantastic opportunity to view the night sky through state of the art telescopes
and astronomical binoculars as well as a laser guided sky tour with details and information
about stars, planets and the Milky Way
in general.
Charles Sturt University initiated the Sky
Stories project and supplied each of our
school with a great new reflecting tele-
scope with which to explore the sky,
even during the daytime. Thanks goes to
them and everyone else who helped
make the project a massive success.
