" P a y U p ! " Pleads Treasurer Utz
Of the 450 people who signed up to buy G. O. tickets this year, only 383 students have actually paid up. This was announced last week by M r . Hendrlckson, faculty advisor of the Student Council, and Leonard Utz, treas-urer of the G. O. The t icket , which costs one dollar, entitles the holder to reduced prices of admission to school activities such as football and basketball games, plays, and concerts, and also provides discounts at local stores.
Since the success of the yearS program of the General Organ i -zation depends largely upon the sales of the G. O. t icket, the of-ficers hope that the entire s tu -dent body w i l l purchase these tickets.
Port High's T e a m In Action
Student Of Week
B i l l Bowman, w e l l k n o w n to everyone around school, has been chosen student of the week be-cause of his part ic ipation i n n u -merous activities connected w i t h the school. Right after school closed on June 26, B i l l went to Colgate Univers i ty to represent Port Washington H i g h at Boys'

Sophs, Seniors T a k e Iowa Tests
This past week, the seniors and sophomores have been t a k -ing tests which lasted two days. They are given to students all over the United States and their purpose is to give a student and his teachers a better picture of his general educational develop-ment. This information also serves to show how we l l Port Senior High is accomplishing its scholastic preparation of s tu-dents. I t helps our school to compare its standards w i t h other .schools and assists the guidance counselors on advising a student about his future educational and vocational plans. They w i l l bo of great value in point ing ou' how his efforts should be dis-tr ibuted. Colleges are some-times very interested in the test results of the entire school.
Miss Wood, Port Washington Schools' test expert, M r . M e r r i l l , Miss Thompson and M r . Scherer meet to discuss which tests would be of most benefit to the s tu -dents of Port Washington. M r . M e r r i l l organizes the schedule of the tests whi l e Miss Wood su-pervises the scoring and in te r -pretation of the results. M i s i Thompson and Mr . Scherer i n -terpret the results and discuss them w i t h the students and their parents, poin.ting out the stu-dent's weaknesses and strength i n various subjects.
Since these tests are scored by special machines, heavy lead pen-cils were used. The tests had l iberal t ime allowances because they are based on power (accom-plishment) rather than speed: therefore nearly everyone could complete them.
Frommja, Hoins Yearbook Editors
Jennie Frommja and A n n Hoins were elected co-editors of the 1953 Port Light at the first meeting of the yearbook's l i t e r -ary staff last week. W i t h M r Schoenborn, faculty advisor of the l i t e rary staff, these students w i l l supervise the production of the yearbook. The members of the l i terary staff have already started work on the senior write-ups.

Driver Training Promotes SafetA^
I n order to promote safe d r i v -ing among its teen-age drive-s, Port Washington has provided a d r i v e r - t r a i n i n g course for its students. The only requirement is that the student be 16 years of age. The half -year course, taught by M r . Smith, nets a s tu -dent half a point. The classes hold 50 students a term. The first term class is completely fill-ed, but there may be a few open-ings in the second term for which the students w i l l have preference. D u r i n g the year the students have instruction both in the classroom and behind the wheel. Among the tests given are psychoanalyses and s k i l l of d r i v ing tests. The s k i l l of d r i v -ing tests are the same as those given to the ambulance and truck drivers of the army.
When the student has success-f u l l y completed the course, he may obtain his regular driver 's license when he is 17 years old.
Balfour Chosen F o r '54 Class Rings
On Monday afternoon of last week, the r ing committee of the jun ior class met to decide what company would make their class rings and to select the style of the rings. . Bob Pratt , the vice-president of the jun ior class, headed the 28-man committee of the companies represented: Jos-ten, Balfour, Graduate House, and Dieges and Clust. The Balfour Company was chosen for the job.
The prices for the rings are as follows: the small r ing , $11.00 to $15.00; the medium sized r ing , $13.00 to $16.00; the large r ing , $14.95 to $18.00; the jumbo r ing , $16.20 to $20.00. The prices range according to the stone. The class key costs f rom $8.50 to $12.50. A p in on a guard costs between $8.75 and $13.50. The bracelets range f rom $10.00 to $14.50. A l l these prices do not include the tax.
A n agent f rom the Balfour Company came last week to take the orders f rom those who had made the i n i t i a l deposit of $5.00.
Six Port Girls Attend Smith T e a
A t the home of Mrs. Smith of Greenvale, the Smith College Club of Long Island held a tea on Friday afternoon, September 19, for those girls f rom Long I s -land interested in entering Smith College. Those who attended f rom Port Washington were Car-olyn Crisaful l i , Debby Dean, Dorian Davis, Dot Tieman, B a r -bara Bowman and Irene Rice. About fifty girls f rom different high schools on Long Island were present.
After tea and refreshments had been served, four Smith u n -dergraduates gave short talks on l i fe at Smith such as the radio broadcasting system there, the social status of the college and the extra curr i cu lum activities. Two girls who had spent their junior year in Paris and Geneva also gave enlightening speeches on their experiences abroad. Most of the girls left for home more interested in attending Smith and grateful for the i n -formation they had received.

Let's Have Some Spirit! O n e hears a lot about School S p i r i t and how important it is to
a team. T h e trouble is, i t seems a l l one does is hear about it , no one does a n y t h i n g about i m p r o v i n g it or getting a l itt le bit i n t r o -duced into the school . W h e n someone sees or hears about a school that has some r e a l School S p i r i t , a l l they say is " W e ought to be l i k e them! W h y doesn't someone c h e e r ? " , then they don't e v e n cheer themselves . P e r h a p s the reason b e h i nd this is no one r e a l l y w a n t s to do a n y t h i n g alone. People a r e v e r y u n w i l l i n g to start a n y t h i n g if they think that there is even a remote possibi l i ty that they w i l l be doing it alone.
T h i s S a t u r d a y at the M a n h a s s e t game let's t r y to cheer our loudest. I f even one w o u l d start, others w o u l d p ick up the c r y and , if it w a s kept up long enough, w e w o u l d have the School S p i r i t that now seems to be l a c k i n g f rom P o r t H i g h .
Need Advice? See The Guidance Dept. P o r t H i g h is fortunate indeed to have s u c h a competent and
e x p e r i e n c e d G u i d a n c e D e p a r t m e n t . Miss B a r b a r a T h o m p s o n and M r . S a u l S c h e r e r have not only been h i g h ly tra ined in psychology and education, but also h a v e a genuine and s incere interest in h e l p -ing the students of the school w i t h their educat ional and personal-problems.
T h e serv ices of the guidance counselors inc lude not only h e l p -ing students to choose a vocation, and assist ing them in secur in g a w o r t h w h i l e p o s t - h i gh school education, but also h e l p i n g t h e m to " i r o n o u t " a n y difficulties they m a y h a v e r e g a r d i n g t h e i r personal l ives .
T h e purpose of the guidance program at P o r t H i g h is not to c o -erce a student into m a k i n g u n w i l l i n g decisions, nor to p r y into his p r i v a t e life, but to offer help and f r i e n d l y a d v i c e to young people d u r i n g their formative teen-age years . F o r this reason, students should feel free to " t a l k things o v e r " w i t h their counselor w h e n -e v e r they feel they need competent, sympathet ic guidance.
