FACULTY ACTIVITIES: Dr. Charles Ewen published a book, Pieces of Eight: More Archaeology of Piracy, with coeditor, Russell Skowronek, University Presses of Florida (Jan. 2016) Dr. Holly Mathews has a chapter, “The Cultural Construction of Illness, Identity and Survivorship,” in Cáncer y Sociedad: Múltiples Miradas, Enfoques, Recortes, published by the Argentina Ministry of Health for the Spanish-speaking world. Dr. Megan Perry published an article with two of her former MA students, K. Parker, and R.T. Montgomery, “Homicide at Early Islamic Qasr Hallabat” in Near Eastern Archaeology (2015) 78: 236-246. She also presented papers at the Institute Franҫais du Proche-Orient in Amman in September and the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at Cambridge University in December and two co- authored papers with students in November. Dr. Christine Avenarius spent the fall semester as Visiting Professor of Cultural Anthropology at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Hamburg. She also presented an invited lecture, “Network Structure and Value Shifts in China: Explaining Preferences in Rural and Urban Conflict Resolution,” at the Max Planck Institute for Ethnology, Halle, Germany. STUDENT ACTIVITIES: BA graduate Marli Richmond was admitted to the MA program in bio-anthropology at George Washington University. BA graduate and SECU summer intern Haley Drabek accepted a position with the Journey Museum in Rapid City, South Dakota MA graduate Kathryn Parker accepted a position with SEARCH, a nationwide contract archaeology firm MA graduate Dan Baicy is field director for Thunderbird Archaeology and was part of a team that recently discovered remains of a revolutionary period ship in Old Town Alexandria while excavating in preparation for waterfront redevelopment. She has a PhD in applied anthropology from the University of South Florida and most recently worked for the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and Univ. of Hawaii’s Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Science as a social science program officer.
