The answer to this are twofold.

Pliny was solider and commander of the fleet. It was his duty, and he had courage to face danger and rescue people without thinking of his own life.

On the other hand, he risked his own life and that of others by going near the place of danger to study the volcano. That was very unwise, and scientists should always think of their safety and that of others.
