2. Ive always been Hattie Here-and-There shuttled between distant relatives with only my best friend Charlie to understand me.

3. But Charlie is gone now to fight the Great War against the Germans.

4. Charlie is on my mind every day.
I pray for his safe return

5. When my late Uncle offered me his home and 320 acres on a Montana homestead, I accepted immediately

6. But what I found was a leaky shack with a dirt floor and snow everywhere. It was bitterly cold and I felt so alone.

7. I got busy fast! To keep my new home I had to plant 40 acres of flax..

8. and lay 8,000 feet of fence.

9. Handsome rancher Traft Martin seems to think he can just buy me out and let his cattle graze..

10. But Im not selling! My flax is doing just fine.

11. My neighbors, Karl and Perilee Mueller treated me like family and helped me every way they could.

12. I dont feel so homeless in my heart anymore. I am no longer Hattie Here-and-There.

13. The outside world couldnt stay away.
The Great War was on everyones minds.

14. And German Americans were treated very badly even here in Vida Montana.

15. I am a loyal American. But I wont turn my back on Karl and Perilee Mueller.

16. I still miss Charlie, but I am proud of all Ive done. I love my new life. The Montana sky goes on forever.

17. And I wont sell my land. Most homesteaders fail, but Lord willing, my crops will come in and the farm is all mine.
