2 HARTLAND MINISTRY REPORT | February 2004

Each Friday evening during the WellnessProgram, the “Everlasting Gospel” is present-

ed to the guests during a voluntary Bible study. I noticed Sandra, who was a young guest and aRoman Catholic, was very attentive but gave noresponse to the message. Later, I learned that shehad not understood because she spoke Spanishand only some English.

Through Veronica, a student counselor, Sandraasked if I would share the plan of salvation slowlyto her privately. Veronica and I went to Sandra’sroom the next day. We knelt in prayer withSandra and asked the Holy Spirit to open herunderstanding.

Sandra understoodperfectly as we slowlyproceeded, withVeronica translating. At the end of theBible study, I appealed toSandra to

surrender her heart and life into the care of ourloving Saviour. By this time tears were flowingdown her cheeks. Veronica and I were alsoweeping as we witnessed the miracle ofconversion. We all knelt in prayer thanking Godfor His transforming grace.

After she went home, some local faithfulSeventh-day Adventists nurtured Sandra in hernew faith. Sandra was baptized recently, acceptingthe Seventh-day Adventist message. Praise theLord! Now Sandra tells us that several of herRoman Catholic family members are studying the truth every Thursday evening.

She wrote the following letter of gratitude:Dear Hartland Friends, I want to thank God for

giving me the blessing of knowing Hartland andall the wonderful people there that my Creator usedto bring me to the arms of Jesus.

I want to thank God and everyone there whohelped me to come to the light. I am very happy inJesus. I was baptized one week ago. I ask forprayers for my family.

Your sister, Sandra RosasWe praise God for not only restoring physical

health to our lifestyle guests, but, moreimportantly, for restoring them

spiritually to Christ’s likeness.

Riley Walker, 77, lives alone. He developedhigh blood pressure and went on medication

to keep it under control. His blood pressure con-tinued to give him problems. “I had a stroke ayear ago. My sugar went up and down. I wasn’twalking too good or talkin’ too good. And I wasdrooling.” Riley knew he was in trouble, but did-n’t know what to do. “I heard about HartlandWellness Center from my church in Charlotte, NC.”

“I didn’t know what to expect, but myexperience at Hartland has been fantastic. At firstit was hard to follow the schedule because, withmy stroke, I don’t move around too good,” Rileysays. “The staff are very dedicated, kind andconsiderate. They work 100 percent to help youout. The students are always friendly, too. Theyseemed to be concerned about my welfare. They’llhelp you out any way they can. Sometimes I getlazy and don’t want to walk, but a student comesand pushes me, ‘Come on. Let’s go.’”

“Now my blood pressure is under control and

stable. And I don’t have to take any medicationsif I do what I’m supposed to do.”

Riley is pleased with what he has learned. “Ilearned a few tricks while I was here. I learnedhow to make my own food. I learned to eat fruits, vegetables and grains. I learned how to makefood that’s healthy for me. I’m not going to eatat night. If I do eat something, I’ll eat fruit. I’llbe more careful about what I eat and what I do.I’ll make sure I get enough rest and enoughexercise and sunshine. I get up at 5:00 and walkin the park for about an hour. The park is not toofar from where I live. So I drive my car there andwalk around. I used to sit around the house andnap all day.”

The best place that you canget some help is the HartlandWellness Center.

Your sister in Christ, Valerie

Recently, I received a letterfrom Elwyn deBeer of the

Word of Life Ministry inWandsbeck, South Africa. I want to share selected partsof the letter with our readers.

“Things are really movinghere. Our ministry is beingblessed and we are kept busyanswering letters and phonecalls. We are very pleasedalthough it means we have towork harder.

Recently, I received a letterfrom a man in prison. He hadreceived Behold He Cometh. One of my friends had handedout copies of this tabloid there.

He studied the lessons andwas convinced that he should

keep the Sabbath holy. He toldhis friends, and when he wroteto us, there was a group of 30keeping the Sabbath everyweek! He was transferred to a nearby prison and wantedmore literature to start groupsin the new prison.

Similarly, two other men inother prisons had also studiedand started keeping theSabbath. They also startedwitnessing to others and eachone had a group of fivekeeping the Sabbath regularly. They have been transferred toother prisons and requestedliterature to start new groups.

Recently, a minister fromanother denomination saw a copy of Christ’s Object

Recently, I met a man whoknew that I was passing outliterature. I told him I sendout christian literature. He told me he was a laypreacher. I gave him a GreatControversy, Desire of Ages,Bible Readings and Christ’sObject Lessons. A week later I spoke to him and then hethanked me, especially forChrist’s Object Lessons.

He assured me he was going touse it to preach in his church.

You will remember that yousent us a lot of literature some time ago. I have handedthese to our SDA friends….They give the real Adventistmessage. This has strengthenedthe confidence of many of ourfriends. They now serve theLord faithfully and labour forothers – both Adventists andnon-Adventists. There is an awesome responsibility when Godhas miraculously saved your life! December

10, 2003 dawned as any usual Monday. After fourdays of visiting with my children, I looked for-ward to getting back to work. As the secretary ofthe Culpeper SDA Church, I was also preparingfor the Monday night board meeting.

At 6:30 p.m., after accomplishing much lessthan I had planned during the day, I left for the20-minute trip to the board meeting. After havinggone about 5 miles, I have no recollection ofwhat happened next until I awoke in theemergency room of the Culpeper RegionalHospital. But the following was told to me.

“God Saved My Life”by Frances Lundberg

✱ WORLD MISSION

Elvin and I have long knownthat Hartland World Missionis too big a department fortwo staff to manage! Finally, the Lord has led just theright people to minister withus—Sheri Trueblood andCarole Johnson.

Sheri Trueblood, a HartlandCollege graduate, has recentlybeen ministering in Guanaja,Honduras. She had major

responsibilities teaching in theconference school, along withoutreach to the parents, church members and generalpopulation. She will be a greatasset in helping to planoverseas programs and relieveme of some of my extensivetravel. Sheri will also assistwith planning some of the on-campus programs. She ismulti-talented and even helpedin the kitchen of the WellnessCenter during the Decemberand January sessions whilewaiting for me to recover frommy recent accident and getback into the office.

Carole Johnson, retired butcertainly not inactive, comesto us from Maryland. She hasattended our on-campusconvocations and camp

meetings, and the Lordmiraculously revealed to her a few months ago that sheshould lend her talents toHartland. She will spend halfher time helping with theoffice duties in HartlandWorld Mission and the otherhalf time at HartlandPublications. She is currentlyfinalizing her prior teachingand counseling commitments, and we expect her to join usabout the end of January.

Two New Staff in Hartland World Mission By Frances Lundberg

A 44-year-old woman had adiabetic reaction while drivingand passed out. Her largeDodge Ram pickup truckcrossed the center line andstruck my small Hyundai head-on. Her truck then continuedinto a ditch on my side of theroad. She was uninjured.

My car spun 180 degrees andcontinued going north, backwards,on the shoulder on my side of theroad. Fortunately, it stopped beforestriking a tree.

As our loving, heavenly Father would have it,Walt Cross, the Director of Hartland WellnessCenter and a qualified EMT, was the third carbehind me. He was the first one to reach my car, even before the dust settled. I was so covered withblood that he did not recognize me and wasshocked, upon inquiry, when I told him myname. He stayed by me, administering what aidhe could, until the ambulance arrived. Not untilasked to move so that the “jaws of life” couldwrench off the door, did he leave my side.

I spent the rest of the night in the emergencyroom, my husband by my side, as the doctorsworked to save my life. By the grace of ourmerciful God, my only injuries were multiplecuts on my face extendinginto the hairline and in myleft ear, a broken right leg, afractured left shoulder and abroken left forearm. For abouttwo weeks, I thought my pelviswas broken but it turned outto be major bruising.

As I write this article, it isless than four weeks since theaccident, but already I can thank the Lord for

the lessons I have learned. I believe it would be a dis-honor to God to murmurand complain since God’sWord tells us “All thingswork together for good….”(Romans 8:28). I havecharacter defects that needto be addressed before the

close of probation and I amso thankful that God allowedmy body to be broken to savemy soul.

The urgency of the timesin which we live has been more fully impressedupon my mind. Statements such as “Faith istrusting God,—believing that He loves us, andknows best what is for our good,” (Review andHerald, December 24, 1908) take on new meaning.

Thank God for saving my life to continue to servein Hartland World Mission and thank you for yourcontinued support so that we can take the gospelto the world and hasten the coming of Jesus.

God challenges us to“prove” Him in Malachi

3:10. As the Bible teacher of theSeventh-day Adventist school, I took up this challenge, byfaith, in helping to plan evan-gelistic and revival meetings inGuanaja, a small island off thecoast of Honduras. With thecombination of drugs, alcohol, immorality, idleness outside ofthe church and lukewarmnessin the church, it’s a roughplace for a young person togrow spiritually.

After months of my trying tofind someone able and willingto come to this little island inCentral America, ReginaldWright, former student ofHartland, and Adrian McQueenfrom Voice in the WildernessInternational answered thecall. Their years of experienceof working with youth inLondon, England and preachingthe three angels’ messagesmade them just the ones weneeded. The first obstacle wascleared—we had workers.

The next obstacle tosurmount was airfare fromEngland to Honduras duringhigh season. That is where

Malachi. 3:10 came in. Lookingat the budget on a venture likethis seemed initially over-whelming because we did notknow where the money wouldcome from, but didn’t God sayHe would “pour out blessingsfrom the windows of heaven”?

If men are willing to risk forbusiness ventures why not riskfor God’s cause? God did proveHimself faithful. All expenses, which amounted to about$3500 US, were paid in ways wedid not foresee. In a third-worldcountry where 17 lempirasequals one dollar and you are a stipend Bible teacher, that isa lot of money. I cannot explainhow much this experiencestrengthened my faith.

And it was worth the “risks.”Not only were the meetingswell attended and well received, but I was privileged to see mystudents responding to altarcalls, making commitmentsand having seeds planted intheir hearts at a very criticaltime in earth’s history. Themessages were given with thepower of the Holy Spirit. Theydealt with the history of thegreat controversy and climaxed

with the parable of the tenfoolish and wise virgins.Church members wereawakened to a desire to learnhow to study their Bibles andespecially how to studyprophecy. As a matter of fact, it was the church that gottogether and paid off the lastamount needed to cover ourexpenses. They said themessages given were sovaluable that it was worthmuch more than money. They did this the night beforethe young men returned toEngland. God came throughright on time. Eternity alonewill show the far-reachingeffects of this mission endeavor.

Are you contemplating doing a work for God but don’t know where the resources will come from? I urge you, before it’s too late, to venture forward for God. Risk something; prove Him. He will not fail you.

With grateful hearts, we thank those whose gifts and hours of volunteering have brought such good progress.

As Maria walked into her patient assessmentclass this past October, she noticed Nathan,

one of her students, lying under the table asleep. After a brief assessment of him, she decided totest her class on their assessment skills. Each student carefully took their turn; thoroughlychecking Nathan in order to give their teacher an accurate assessment. All agreed that he hadan elevated temperature and began addressing a treatment protocol.

The first item on their collective protocol wasprayer. After two of the students prayed, they gaveNathan a warm blanket, hydration, a cool towelto the forehead and various herbal teas such asfeverfew and peppermint. Each item of the careplan was thoroughly carried out by the class. AfterNathan was treated, Mom carried him home for

follow-up care. Nathan’s class was kindergartenthrough third grade.

Neither religious liberty nor toleration were fea-tures of the Virginia Colony in 1688. From the

beginning, the colony believed they could only con-trol their members by “religion and law. Theyexercised despotism in both.”1 Strong religious lawswere established with severe penalties for those whodid not participate and for dissenters such as theBaptists. Many Baptist preachers refused to obtain alicense from the government of the colony becausethey believed that their license was given them inGod’s word, and they had no need of a human license.

Many examples may be given of Baptist preacherswho were arrested, imprisoned, fined and even whippedbecause they believed that the right (and duty) topreach the gospel was God-given and inalienable, and quite beyond the pale of legislators and courts.

Joseph Anthony and William Webber were zealous, powerful and effective young ministers. They wereinvited to preach to some of the inhabitants inChesterfield County. The magistrate, discovering thatthey were turning many to “madness” (meaning to

massage therapy, patient assessment, herbsand nutrition. The adults also receivedadvanced training in chronic diseases andhow to fulfill our spiritual commission.

“I haven’t had any sugar, and not onesnack between meals in three weeks! That isa true miracle. The sugar withdrawals seemto be over,” said one participant. “Our oldestson is drinking Chaparral tea each day foracne. And despite the fact that it tastesDISGUSTING, he’s drinking it because it’sclearing up his face!”

Many families “latched hold” of God’shealth plan during the training. “We are alleating more fruits and veggies, and our tripsto Dairy Queen have ceased!” said Debbie.

There is also a growing desire to share thehealth message with others. “We (the kidsand I) are going to begin having healthclasses each week. We are going to teach ahydrotherapy class on December 7 at thePioneer Fellowship. And the following weekwe are going to have a “Healthy Desserts”demonstration at our home.”

After the course, Debbie Fine, thecoordinator, was invited to the OoltewahHomeschool Support group to talk about theMMTC. They are predominantly non-SDA,but are very interested in attending thecourse this year.

It is thrilling to watch our youth grasp thehealth message and take it to their families, neighbors and friends.

Baptist beliefs) and likely to do the establishedChurch of England much harm, issued warrants, had them arrested and thrown in prison. Afterseveral weeks they were arraigned. Since theywould not violate their conscience and agree tostop their itinerant preaching, they were left in jailfor three long months.

While in prison, they preached through the irongrates of the prison windows. Many people attendedthe preaching on the street outside the prison cell, and many were converted to the Lord by virtue ofthese persecuted ministers. In fact, Chesterfield wasthe worst persecuting county in the whole colony. But few counties had a greater response to theprinciples of the Baptists than Chesterfield.2

“Such was the power of Joseph Anthony’sministry while in jail, as he lifted up his voice andproclaimed Christ to the crowds without, that it

was judged the best policy to dismiss him. Thejailer was directed to shut the door of his cell, butto leave it unlocked, that it might be reported hehad fled from prison. Mr. Anthony chose tocontinue. The door was then left open—still heremained.” A fellow prisoner tried to persuade him to escape, but he replied, “They have taken us openly, uncondemned, and have cast us intoprison; and now, do they cast us out privily? Nay, verily, but let them come themselves and fetch us out.”3

Such courage is rare today. Most of us wouldtake the opportunity to escape the jaws ofpunishment. But Mr. Anthony saw the trap. Theauthorities were going to accuse them of someevil by escaping from prison, which theythemselves would have orchestrated. Have youever seen that kind of thing happen? How many

faithful souls have been accused ofwrongdoing when the accusersthemselves set them up for it?

How Mr. Webber and Mr. Anthonywere released has not come down tous. But they saw a higher principle. Why could not the magistrates havejust as openly brought them out ofprison as they had put them in?Because the people’s sympathies werewith the imprisoned men and it wouldhave been terribly humbling to openlyrelease them without putting theircharacters under a further cloud. Howoften we will settle for less than thecomplete vindication of the truth, while its enemies run roughshod overits supporters. We need more Webbersand Anthonys, don’t we? References1. Letter From TaniaNow Working in India

“I’m so glad that I was able to receive the right education and training at Hartland College. I would not trade myexperience for anything.

Right now I’m occupied with teaching the students at ourschool and orphanage. I am teaching Bible, English, historyand geography for grades 7-10. I am thoroughly enjoyingteaching them the things I have learned at Hartland. The Lordhas surely blessed me with this wonderful job of molding andeducating young minds for His service. This is exactly what I wanted to do after I had finished at Hartland. The Lord hasbeen good to me in giving me this opportunity.”

graduate of Hartland College. After meeting someHartland students at M.E.E.T. Ministry last spring, she wanted to get better aquainted with Hartlandand be in a spiritual enviroment while she wascontemplating marriage. She called to volunteerfor the ladies’ dorm project. In October she worked

at the construction site, which was a new experi-ence. Then she was needed on the farm to pruneroses, turn the soil, water plants, plant seeds, trans-plant seedlings and move plants into thegreenhouses.

Later, she became a volunteer at the HartlandWellness Center. During sessions, her duties were tohelp prepare food for the health guests, accompanythem on walks and share devotional thoughts withthem. “We were very busy. I learned to work fast.Cooking for so many people and getting it out ontime is different than cooking for a family.”

She also had the chance to do Bible work withstudents and she is looking forward to colporteuringnext term.

Recently, she accepted a proposal for marriage. She plans to continue volunteering at the WellnessCenter until February. “I feel like I’ve received alot. I have grown spiritually! My time here wasgood preparation for marriage and for my futureministry. It has been a really nice experience andI’ll miss Hartland when I leave. Who knows?Maybe we’ll be back as volunteers!”

Thank you, Mary, for your willingness to serveGod here at Hartland.

Recently, I was in a grocery store standing in thecheckout line. There in the rack was a maga-

zine with the now-famous picture of the capturedSaddam Hussein looking haggard and bewildered.

As I was wrapped up in my thoughts, the manwho chanced to be in front of me turned to meand said, “If I was George Bush, do you knowwhat I’d do? I’d tell Saddam he has 24 hours togive me all the names of the insurgent leaders, orI’d burn him at the stake.”

I almost reeled back in shock, butmanaged to control myself. I haven’tever heard that kind of talk fromanyone. I’ve only read about the autode fe (burning at the stake) in historybooks. Why talk of this barbaricpunishment in this modern andenlightened age? If Saddam deserves todie, I would think a firing squad or anelectric chair could do the job prettywell. Why burn him at the stake with alingering painful death? But I suppose that wasmy companion’s point. Make it painful. After all, didn’t Saddam torture his victims?

Then it dawned on me. God had allowed me tohear this man’s deeply passionate feelings aboutSaddam, who is half a world away, for a reason. My checkout line companion cannot touchSaddam himself, but deep in his heart he is veryangry at him. He was telling me what he woulddo if he could. Ellen White comments, “Asreligious aggression subverts the liberties of ournation, those who would stand for freedom ofconscience will be placed in unfavorablepositions.” Maranatha, p. 185.

When our faith is placed in unfavorable light, perhaps we will be painted as wicked as SaddamHussein. What will be the feelings and actions ofthose around us who have the ability to harmus? Will they be as angry as the man in front ofme at the grocery store? Will they perhaps try totake matters into their own hands? After all, wewon’t be half a world away, perhaps only a fewinches, as I was from my angry companion. God

gave me this little insight so that I could see how easy it is toresurrect the methods of the DarkAges in modern America.

Ellen White goes on to say, “For their own sake, they should, while they have opportunity, become intelligent in regard todisease, its causes, preventionand cure. And those who do thiswill find a field of laboranywhere.” Ibid, p.185.

Perhaps God’s medical missionaries will alsofind protection through helping others.

Satan is using the Saddams and the Osamas ofthe world to condition people to knee-jerk incertain ways when their emotional buttons arepushed. Get ready for trouble, folks. Once thefocus shifts to God’s people, there’s no tellinghow far some will be willing to go to vent theiranger, even to the infamous stake.

Our stewardship involves preparation.Becoming a medical missionary may be yourbest asset in difficult times. Build your prayer life, too. It is a resource you will desperately need. After all, you might face the stake.

While in Australia recently, I received a letter froman old friend. The letter asked if there could be

some leeway for the findings of science, especiallyconcerning the Bible teaching of the six literal, consecutive, twenty-four-hour days of creation aboutsix thousand years ago. He included a very carefullycrafted article in which he pled for his Seventh-dayAdventist scientist friends to accept the apparentscientific evidence for a much older world and thusreinterpret Genesis chapters 1-9.

This was not new. The real question is: Can webelieve that the Bible is the basis of our faithconcerning salvation while also recognizing that theBible may not always be scientifically sound? Myanswer is an emphatic, “No!” “All Scripture is givenby inspiration of God.” 2 Timothy 3:16. Some seem tothink that evidence for the “big bang” theory, forexample, is not strong enough to cause Christians towaver from other literal understandings of the Bible. But my friend was also concerned that if we defendBible stories as literal (such as the miracles ofChrist), many young people trained in the knowledgeof “science” would turn away from the Seventh-dayAdventist faith, possibly from Christianity itself, because these stories could not be validated by science.

Copernicus, Galileo and others discovered that theearth was not the center of the universe, but that oursolar system revolves around the sun. This fact wasstrongly opposed by the Roman Church during the17th century. Galileo was brought before theInquisition and sentenced to house arrest for the lasteight years of his life for holding such heretical views.

The Catholic Church tried to use certain scripturesto buttress their opposition to Galileo. In frustration

he proposed that astronomy should not be judged bythe Bible, but should depend upon observation. Thatview means Scripture should be interpreted to supportthe scientific evidence. Inspiration makes someinteresting comments:

“Science is ever discovering new wonders, but shebrings from her research nothing that, rightly understood, conflicts with divine revelation.” Education, p. 128.

“Inferences erroneously drawn from factsobserved in nature have, however, led to supposedconflict between science and revelation, and in aneffort to restore harmony, interpretations of Scripturehave been adopted that undermine and destroy theforce of the word of God.” Ibid.

Notice these important principles: 1) Science, properly understood, and the Bible are in completeharmony. 2) There is no inconsistency betweenscience and the Bible. 3) The book of nature and thebook of Revelation shed light upon each other.

Science can often change quickly and radicallyunder further investigation. But the Bible does notchange. Therefore, “The Bible is not to be tested bymen‘s ideas of science, but science is to be brought tothe test of the unerring standard." Counsels to Parents,Teachers and Students, p. 425. Many times, we haveto wait for science to catch up to the Bible.

In the next Hartland Ministry Report, we will lookat a few predictions of Ellen Whitethat were thought to be erroneousand see if science has caught up.

God bless you.
