Greetings. I welcome you to our 2008 Annual Report.

In October, we had the joy of celebrating our 175th anniversary. From October 19, when we led a bus tour of sites associated with The Rev. Jonathan Edwards, through October 26, when we held an interfaith service of celebration at Immanuel Congregational Church, Hartford Seminary was abuzz with activity. Here is what we said about the celebration, I think it captures our spirit: “In a time when its expertise is needed most, Hartford Seminary is educating Christians, Muslims, and Jews to work and learn together side by side, to become thoughtful and faithful peacemakers in a world divided by differences. With its rich history of visionary leaders as a foundation, Hartford

Seminary will continue to adapt and innovate to meet the needs of the world in which it serves.”

This issue of Praxis offers highlights of the anniversary celebration, in words and pictures. I hope you find them as energizing as I do. Let me now report on other important developments in the past year:

We named a new dean and two new faculty at the Macdonald Center.

Efrain Agosto, Professor of New Testament and noted Pauline scholar, became academic dean of the Seminary, effective July 1. Efrain is creative, he understands theological education, he is a collaborator, and he loves Hartford Seminary. I will enjoy working with him as academic leaders of the Seminary.

The Building Abrahamic Partnerships program now offers an advanced course focusing on practical skills for interfaith leadership. The Muslim World continues to be a premier resource on Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. The leadership certificate programs in Black Ministries, Hispanic Ministries and Women’s Leadership continue to thrive.

Sadly, we lost several longtime leaders of the Seminary in the past year. John Dillenberger, Seminary President from 1978 to 1983, died in February. His tenure included the construction of the current building; bringing the Christian-Muslim Relations faculty and program back to Hartford; institutionalizing the research program; and the re-introduction

who came a decade ago as Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations. Already Ingrid has made an impact – the Macdonald Center underwent a makeover during the summer. Fresh paint, polished floors and new furniture has done wonders to its appearance.

Our Congregational Relations Program has three new students this fall. Helena Rijoly is a Pentecostal Christian from Ambon, Indonesia. Radko Popov is an Eastern Orthodox Christian from Bulgaria. Sharareh Esfandiari is a Shi’ite Muslim from Shiraz, Iran.

In the spring, the Hartford Institute for Religion Research released American Congregations 2005, continuing its pioneering research into the health of faith communities today.

of degree programs. Harvey McArthur, Acting President from 1976 to 1978, died in January. He taught at the Seminary, where he held the Hosmer Chair of New Testament Studies, from 1948 to 1978. David A. Kerr died in April. He served as the Director of the Macdonald Center from 1989 to 1996. All three will be misssed; their families are in our prayers.

Muslim Relations. He also is editor of The Muslim World journal and director of our International Ph.D. Program. Yahya is an innovative thinker who is forging a new Islamic theology. He is considered one of the leading Islamic scholars in the world today.

Also starting this fall on the faculty is Mahmoud Ayoub, as Faculty Associate in Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. A Lebanese Shi‘ite educated in Quaker schools, Mahmoud has been involved in interfaith dialogue, what he calls ‘the dialogue of life,’ since early childhood.

For 2008-2009, we also are privileged to have Davide Tacchini as Visiting Professor of Islamic Studies.

Leadership by Example… could have been the theme for the 2007-2008 Annual Fund. Gifts to the Annual Fund were received from 100% of the Seminary’s Board of Trustees and 100% of our faculty and staff. And in response to two appeal letters signed by The Rev. Dr. Molly O. Louden and The Rev. Dr. Lowell H. Fewster, Corporators contributed $15,047, compared to $8,580 the year before.
