A colossal figure in the local music arena for almost 30 years as a pianist, composer, musician, Harsha Makalande is unforgettable, given the service he has rendered. Apart from being famous for creating a revolutionary change in the traditions of music as fusion artiste and also as Jazz music performer, his music

Europe, Africa, and the Middle East with an outstanding Sri Lankan Pop band (Lotus, created by Raja & Priyanthi) from 1978 to 1982. They played and were acclaimed in Venice Italy (including the Venice Film Festival), Nairobi and other cities.

The composer applied his techniques developed by analyzing Sri Lankan Folk music to create music for award winning films such as Pavuru Vallalu, Anantha Rathriya, Aksharaya, Aswasuma, and Ira Handa gala (documentary), and award winning Teledramas such as Pitagamkarayo. The composer also contributed to the Sinhala drama field by creating music for award winning

Harsha Makalande is an award winning Sri Lankan composer striving to enrich the repertoire of Serious Music in Sri Lanka, which is at it’s infancy. Serious Music (Sambhavya Sangeethaya in Sinhala) is an aspect of a country's art culture which may contribute to the integrity of that country. At the moment only about ten Sri Lankan composers have created works in this genre. Some of them are namely Sarath Fernando, Premasiri Khemadasa, Lalanath De Silva, Wasantha Fernanado, Sarath Wickrema, Harsha Makalande, Rohan De Livera, etc.

Harsha Makalande delved into the treasure trove of Sinhala Folk music in the 1980’s after returning to Sri Lanka from a tour of

(TV and Radio) in Germany, and the Casino Municipale in Lido di Venezea, Italy for the Venice Film Festival (1980), and the NCPA in Mumbai, India (one of eight artistes invited to inaugurate the very first Jazz festival done by the state of India in 2011).

Harsha formed his ensemble Khrome in 1987 and has performed at many festivals here and abroad. The repertoire ranges from Jazz, Classical, Oriental to Pop music, and encourages the participation of musicians from a cross section of our society, especially young and developing musicians from all communities.

The composer’s intention and fervent hope is to create an identifiable sound in Serious Music that will encourage the audience to move away from the notion that Sri Lanka is a “Third World” country!

productions such as Ukdandu Ginna (Nimal Ekanayake), Yadam (Somalatha Subhasinghe), and Yaksha gamanaya (Dharmasiri bandaranayake). He has also been commissioned by local as well as international film, dance drama, and drama directors.

Svarasanga Vannama a work for full symphony orchestra, local drums and Piano by Harsha Makalande had its world debut on the 4th of October at the Tokyo Opera City (Japan) in 2007. The soloists were Harsha Makalande - Piano, Jananath Warakagoda - Tammattama, and Ravibandu Vidyapathi - Gatabera who performed with a world symphony orchestra to receive a resounding applause from a full house.

Some other venues he has performed at are, Sydney Opera House, ZDF and WDR
