PlotFurther information: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows novel plotAfter giving Dobby a proper burial at Shell Cottage, Harry speaks with Griphook the Goblin about breaking intoBellatrix Lestrange's vault at Gringotts bank, as Bellatrix's reaction suggested that a Horcrux may be there. Griphookagrees to take Harry, Ron, and Hermione to the vault in exchange for the goblin-made Sword of Gryffindor. Harryasks Ollivander, the wandmaker, to identify two wands they took from Malfoy Manor. Ollivander says theybelonged to Bellatrix and Draco Malfoy, but Malfoy's wand has changed its allegiance to Harry. At Bellatrix's vault, Harry discovers the Horcrux, Helga Hufflepuff's Cup, despite curses placed on the vaultcontents, but Griphook takes the sword and abandons the students, as he did not agree to help them leave. The threerelease the dragon guardian of the vault and fly away. Harry looks into Voldemort's mind and learns that Voldemorthas discovered the theft and killed many goblins in retaliation, including Griphook; the sword of Gryffindordisappeared. Voldemort keeps Nagini–his snake and living Horcrux–with him at all times for protection. Harry alsolearns there is a Horcrux at Hogwarts, in some way related to Rowena Ravenclaw.Harry, Ron, and Hermione apparate into Hogsmeade, which sets off a Caterwauling Charm alarm. They are rescuedby Aberforth Dumbledore, Professor Dumbledore's brother. The discouraged Aberforth instructs a portrait of hisyounger sister, Ariana to fetch Neville Longbottom, who leads the three friends through a secret passage back toHogwarts and reunites them with other student allies. Harry asks the students for help in looking for the unknownHorcrux; the only suggestion is the long-lost Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw, but this has not been seen for centuries.Severus Snape, now headmaster of Hogwarts, hears of Harry's return and informs everyone of the severe punishment for aiding Harry. Harry confronts Snape, and Professor McGonagall causes Snape to flee. Voldemort threatens Hogwarts to give Harry to him, and McGonagall gathers the community of Hogwarts to prepare for battle. Luna Lovegood directs Harry to speak to Helena Ravenclaw. Helena eventually reveals that Voldemort performed "dark magic" on her mother's diadem, which is hidden somewhere in the Room of Requirement. Meanwhile, Ron and Hermione go to the Chamber of Secrets, where Hermione destroys the cup Horcrux with a Basilisk fang; the two profess their love to each other. In the Room of Requirement, Malfoy and his friends Gregory Goyle and Blaise Zabini attack Harry, but Ron and Hermione intervene. Goyle casts a Fiendfyre curse and dies in the uncontrolled flames, but Malfoy and Zabini are saved by Harry and his friends. Harry and Ron destroy the Ravenclaw diadem. The school is under attack by Voldemort's forces, including fearsome giants. The three search for Voldemort, intending to kill Nagini. They witness Voldemort telling Snape that the Elder Wand cannot be truly his until Snape dies, and has Nagini kill Snape. Before dying, Snape gives Harry some memories via a tear, and tells Harry to look at them using the Pensieve in Dumbledore's office. When the three go inside they see many have been killed, including

Fred Weasley, Lavender Brown, Remus Lupin, and his wife Nymphadora.Harry learns from Snape's memories that Snape and his mother were childhood friends, and Snape loved her.Following her killing, Snape agreed with Albus Dumbledore to protect Harry from Voldemort out of his love for her, despite hating Harry's father. Harry himself became a Horcrux, since he contains part of Voldemort's soul that splitoff at the time of his mother's death. Dumbledore told Snape that Harry has to die to destroy the Horcrux within him.Harry goes alone to meet his death at the hands of Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest and uses the ResurrectionStone, hidden in a snitch Dumbledore left in his will to Harry, to summon the spirits of his parents, Sirius Black, andRemus Lupin, who say they will stay with him to the end. Voldemort casts a Killing Curse at him. Harry findshimself in a strange white limbo, where the spirit of Dumbledore meets him and explains that the part of Voldemortwithin him was killed by Voldemort's own curse, and that Harry has the choice to return to the world or to die. Harryreturns to his body, and Bellatrix asks if Harry is dead. Narcissa walks up to Harry and asks him in a soft whisper ifDraco is alive. Harry manages a nod, and Narcissa tells Voldemort and the Death Eaters that he is dead. Harry feignsdeath until Hagrid, carrying Harry's body, return with Voldemort and the Death Eaters to Hogwarts. Voldemortdeclares to everyone that Harry is dead, to which Ginny cries out for him, but Neville gives a short speech thatpeople die everyday and Harry did not die in vain, but out of bravery and love for his friends. Voldemort says thatanyone who defies against him will be destroyed, and encourages the students to join him, but no one crosses over tohis side. Narcissa and Lucius call Draco over, to which he reluctantly joins his parents. Harry opens his eyes andfalls out of Hagrid's arms and reveals that he is alive, to everyone's surprise. Neville defiantly draws of the sword ofGryffindor, and as Harry begins his duel with Voldemort across the courtyard, Neville decapitates Nagini, the last ofthe Horcruxes, making Voldemort mortal. During the battle, as Bellatrix is about to finish off Ginny, Molly appearsand kills Bellatrix. The dark lord is then killed by his own Killing Curse as the Elder Wand rebounds it on him andflies into Harry's hands. After the battle, Harry walks through Hogwarts and sees the place in ruins, but everyone isslowly recovering from the confrontation. Harry explains to his friends that the Elder Wand had recognised him asits master because he had disarmed Draco Malfoy at Malfoy Manor, who in turn had disarmed its previous owner,Dumbledore. Ron notes that possessing the Wand makes Harry invincible, but Harry snaps the Elder Wand in halfand throws each half over the side of the Hogwarts bridge, rejecting this power.Nineteen years later, Harry and Ginny Potter, along with Ron and Hermione Weasley and the Malfoys, now eachmarried, see their children off on the Hogwarts Express. Harry's middle child, Albus Severus, worries about thepossibility of him being sorted into Slytherin house. ProductionPart 2 was filmed back-to-back with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 from 19 February 2009, to 12June 2010, with reshoots for the Epilogue scene taking place at Leavesden Film Studios on 21 December 2010.Director David Yates, who shot the film with director of photography Eduardo Serra, described Part 2 as "operatic, colourful and fantasy-oriented", a "big opera with huge battles."[15] [16]

SetsIn an interview with Architectural Digest, production designer Stuart Craig remarked on creating sets for Part 2. Onthe Gringotts Wizarding Bank, he said, "our banking hall, like any other, is made of marble and big marble columns. And it has great strength. The fact that the goblins are the bankers and tellers at the counter helps that feeling ofgrandeur and solidity and the big proportions. That was part of the fun of the set: we exaggerated the size of it, weexaggerated the weight of it, and we even exaggerated the shine of the marble." About the multiplication of treasurein one of the bank's vaults, he noted, "We made literally thousands of pieces for it and vacuum metalised them to beshiny gold and silver. John Richardson, the special effects supervisor, made a floor that was capable of rising ondifferent levels, so there was kind of a physical swelling of the treasure on it."[17]

Craig spoke about the Battle of Hogwarts to Art Insights Magazine, saying that "the great challenge is the destructionof Hogwarts. The sun rising behind the smoke ... the massive remains of destroyed walls, the entrance hall, theentrance of the Great Hall, part of the roof of the Great Hall completely gone, so yeah. A big challenge there and anenjoyable one really – maybe it helped me and the guys in the art department sort of prepare for the end ... wedemolished it before we had to strike it completely." When asked about the King's Cross scene near the end of thefilm, Craig said, "We experimented a lot, quite honestly. I mean it was quite a protracted process really but we didexperiment the sense of it being very burnt out very very kind of white – so we experimented with underlit floors,we experimented with different kind of white covering everything: white paint, white fabric, and the cameraman wasinvolved in how much to expose it, and a series of camera tests were done, so we got there but with a great deal ofpreparation and research."[18]

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 5

Visual effectsVisual effects companies that worked on Part 1 (including Framestore, Moving Picture Company and DoubleNegative who created the Gringotts Dragon) also worked on the visuals for Part 2. Visual Effects Supervisor TimBurke said that "It was such a major job to stage the Battle of Hogwarts, and we had to do it in different stages ofproduction. We had shots with complex linking camera moves from wide overviews, to flying into windows andinterior spaces. So, we took the plunge at the end of 2008, and started rebuilding the school digitally with DoubleNegative." He went on to say that "It's taken two years – getting renders out, texturing every facet of the building, constructing interiors to see through windows, building a destruction version of the school. We can design shots withthe knowledge that we have this brilliant digital miniature that we can do anything with. With a practical Hogwarts,we would have shot it last summer and been so tied down. Instead, as David Yates finds the flow and structure, weare able to handle new concepts and ideas."[19]

On the quality of 3-D in film, Burke told Los Angeles Times, "I think it's good, actually. I think people are going tobe really pleased. I know everyone's a little nervous and sceptical of 3-D these days, but the work has been donevery, very well. We've done over 200 shots in 3-D and in the visual effects as well, because so much of it is CG, sothe results are very, very good. I think everyone's going to be really impressed with it, actually." Producer DavidHeyman spoke to SFX magazine about the 3-D conversion, saying that "The way David Yates is approaching 3-D ishe's trying to approach it from a character and story point of view. Trying to use the sense of isolation, of separationthat sometimes 3-D gives you, to heighten that at appropriate moments. So we're approaching it in a storytellingway."[20] [21]

SoundtrackThe composer of the first three films, John Williams, expressed interest in returning for Deathly Hallows – Part 2 ifit fit his schedule. Director David Yates stated that he was eager to work with Williams on the score, but it was notpossible due to their conflicting schedules.[22] It was confirmed via the Warner Bros. website that Part 1 composer,Alexandre Desplat, was set to return for Part 2.[23] [24] In an interview with Film Music Magazine, Desplat stated thatscoring Part 2 is "a great challenge" and that he has "a lot of expectations to fulfill and a great deal of work" ahead ofhim.[25] Desplat started writing the music in early 2011, and finished recording with orchestrator Conrad Pope andthe London Symphony Orchestra on 27 May 2011, at Abbey Road Studios.[26] [27]
