‘Abki Baar Trump Sarkar’ : Modi endorsesDonald Trump for 2020 US Presidency

COND FROM PAGE 1Amid chants of "Modi, Modi", Prime

Minister endorsed Trump for 2020 USPresidency when he said "Abki BaarTrump Sarkar", reminding the gatheringof Indian Americans of the chant duringrecent general elections in India earlierthis year where the chant was "Abki baarModi Sarkar". Modi a little later , invitingTrump to address the gathering said thatTrump had introduced his family to himwhen he had visited the White Houseduring his last visit to the US, and he wasnow presenting to him "my family of50,000", to the great delight of the man wholoves crowds and applause.

At hand were about 60 lawmakersbelonging to both the Republican and theDemocratic Party.

An estimated 50, 000 strong crowd wenthysteric whenever Trump praised Modi orlater, when Modi spoke about India'sstrength and resolve to deal with a hostilePakistan.

Defended his government's actions inKashmir and, in thinly veiled remarks,Modi accused Pakistan of harboringterrorists and promoting terrorism in theregion.

Trump sat in the front row as the Indian

prime minister told cheering crowds hisdecision to remove all autonomy fromIndian-administered Kashmir would bringprogress and better rights for its people.

India has faced international criticismover its actions in Kashmir. Thousands ofpeople have reportedly been detained, andaccess to mobile or internet services hasbeen severed for millions of people in acommunications blackout, part of asecurity clampdown in the wake of Delhi'sdecision.

The rally, on Sunday, marked the firsttime Modi had discussed the decision toremove Kashmir's special status on aworld stage, and followed months of fiercerhetoric from Pakistan, which also claimsthe disputed region and has sought to raisethe issue with the UN.

Without directly naming Pakistan, Modiaccused the country of "hatred towardsIndia" and of supporting terrorism.

"Whether it is the 9/11 attack in Americaor the 26/11 attack in Mumbai, where areits conspirators found?

"The time has come for a decisive fightagainst terrorism and those who supportterrorism," he said. "I want to stress herethat President Trump is standing firmlyagainst this."

Trump, who was given a rapturouswelcome at the event, said he wascommitted to protecting "innocentcivilians from the threat of radical Islamicterrorism".

About 50,000 Indian Americans attendedthe "Howdy Modi!" rally, where crowdschanted "Modi! Modi! Modi!" as he took tothe stage, following a 90-minute culturalprogram featuring 400 dancers.

Trump, introduced by Modi as "myfriend, a friend of India, a great Americanpresident", was given a standing ovation atthe event in Houston, a Democraticstronghold in Republican-dominatedTexas. Houston is expected to be a criticalbattleground in Trump's 2020 re-electionbid.

Modi, who was re-elected this year witha thumping majority, enjoys wide supportamong Indians both at home and abroad, especially among the middle classes, saidManoj Joshi, a fellow at the ObserverResearch Foundation, a New Delhi-basedthinktank. "He is extremely popular, particularly when it comes to the Indian

diaspora in the US where there is a lot ofGujarati diaspora, from his home state," hesaid.

The rally was held as Kashmir remainsunder a security crackdown, apparently toprevent unrest. Outside the stadium, protesters accused Modi's government ofhuman rights abuses against Kashmiris.

Iltija Mufti, the daughter of the formerJammu and Kashmir chief ministerMehbooba Mufti, said on Twitter: "Whilepeople in Kashmir have been gagged, masshysteria is orchestrated elsewhere tojustify this decision." Her mother wasamong thousands reportedly detained aspart of a crackdown by security services.

Modi's speech came just days before theUN general assembly's meeting in NewYork, where the Pakistani prime minister,Imran Khan, is expected to accuse Modi ofbeing complicit in torture and massdetention in Indian-administeredKashmir. Michael Kugelman, a south Asiaexpert at the Wilson Center, in WashingtonDC, said while Modi generally preferred tokeep quiet about Kashmir with globalaudiences, it was unsurprising that he hadraised the issue in Texas.

"I think he wanted to try to bluntinternational criticism by demonstratingjust how popular the move [to removeKashmir's special status] was amongIndians - including Indian Americans inthe US," said Kugelman. "And indeed hiscomment got louder applause than justabout anything he or Trump said duringthe whole event."

Though the scrapping of Kashmir'sspecial status faces major oppositionwithin the region, it is widely supportedelsewhere in India.

It was unsurprising an Indian leaderwould criticize Pakistan in a politicalspeech, said Kugelman, but he added: "It issignificant that Modi did so with Trumpseated right in front of him, and at amoment when the US-Pakistanrelationship has enjoyed a renaissancethanks to Islamabad's help with Talibantalks in Afghanistan."

4 THE INDIAN PANORAMAFRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2019TRIBUTE

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhiwas an eminent freedom activistand an influential political

leader who played a dominant role inIndia's struggle for independence.Gandhi is known by different names, such as Mahatma (a great soul), Bapuji(endearment for father in Gujarati) andFather of the Nation. Every year, hisbirthday is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti,a national holiday in India, and alsoobserved as the International Day ofNonviolence. Mahatma Gandhi, as he ismost commonly referred to, wasinstrumental in liberating India from theclutches of the British. With his unusualyet powerful political tools ofSatyagraha and non-violence, heinspired several other political leadersall over the world including the likes ofNelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jrand Aung San Suu Kyi. Gandhi, apartfrom helping India triumph in its fightfor independence against the English, also led a simple and righteous life, forwhich he is often revered. Gandhi's earlylife was pretty much ordinary, and hebecame a great man during the course ofhis life. This is one of the main reasonswhy Gandhi is followed by millions, forhe proved that one can become a greatsoul during the course of one’s life, should they possess the will to do so.

ChildhoodM. K. Gandhi was born in the princely

state of Porbandar, which is located inmodern-day Gujarat. He was born into aHindu merchant caste family toKaramchand Gandhi, diwan ofPorbandar and his fourth wife, Putlibai.Gandhi’s mother belonged to an affluentPranami Vaishnava family. As a child,Gandhi was a very naughty andmischievous kid. In fact, his sister Raliathad once revealed that hurting dogs bytwisting their ears was amongMaohandas’ favorite pastime. During thecourse of his childhood, Gandhibefriended Sheikh Mehtab, who wasintroduced to him by his older brother.Gandhi, who was raised by a vegetarianfamily, started eating meat. It is also saidthat a young Gandhi accompaniedSheikh to a brothel, but left the placeafter finding it uncomfortable. Gandhi, along with one of his relatives, alsocultivated the habit of smoking afterwatching his uncle smoke. Aftersmoking the leftover cigarettes, thrownaway by his uncle, Gandhi startedstealing copper coins from his servantsin order to buy Indian cigarettes. Whenhe could no longer steal, he even decidedto commit suicide such was Gandhi’saddiction to cigarettes. At the age offifteen, after stealing a bit of gold fromhis friend Sheikh’s armlet, Gandhi feltremorseful and confessed to his fatherabout his stealing habit and vowed to

him that he would never commit suchmistakes again.

Early LifeIn his early years, Gandhi was deeply

influenced by the stories of Shravanaand Harishchandra that reflected theimportance of truth. Through thesestories and from his personalexperiences, he realized that truth andlove are among the supreme values.Mohandas married Kasturba Makhanjiat the age of 13. Gandhi later went on toreveal that the marriage didn’t meananything to him at that age and that hewas happy and excited only aboutwearing new set of clothes. But then asdays passed by, his feelings for herturned lustful, which he later confessedwith regret in his autobiography. Gandhihad also confessed that he could no moreconcentrate in school because of hismind wavering towards his new andyoung wife.

Education

After his family moved to Rajkot, anine year old Gandhi was enrolled at alocal school, where he studied the basicsof arithmetic, history, geography andlanguages. When he was 11 years old, heattended a high school in Rajkot. He lostan academic year in between because ofhis wedding but later rejoined the schooland eventually completed his schooling. He then dropped out of Samaldas Collegein Bhavnagar State after joining it in theyear 1888. Later Gandhi was advised by afamily friend Mavji Dave Joshiji topursue law in London. Excited by theidea, Gandhi managed to convince hismother and wife by vowing before themthat he would abstain from eating meatand from having sex in London.Supported by his brother, Gandhi left toLondon and attended the Inner Templeand practiced law. During his stay inLondon, Gandhi joined a VegetarianSociety and was soon introduced toBhagavad Gita by some of his vegetarianfriends. The contents of Bhagavad Gitawould later have a massive influence on

his life. He came back to India after beingcalled to the bar by Inner Temple.

Gandhi in South AfricaAfter returning to India, Gandhi

struggled to find work as a lawyer. In1893, Dada Abdullah, a merchant whoowned a shipping business in SouthAfrica asked if he would be interested toserve as his cousin’s lawyer in SouthAfrica. Gandhi gladly accepted the offerand left to South Africa, which wouldserve as a turning point in his politicalcareer.

In South Africa, he faced racialdiscrimination directed towards blacksand Indians. He faced humiliation onmany occasions but made up his mind tofight for his rights. This turned him intoan activist and he took upon him manycases that would benefit the Indians andother minorities living in South Africa.Indians were not allowed to vote or walkon footpaths as those privileges werelimited strictly to the Europeans. Gandhiquestioned this unfair treatment andeventually managed to establish anorganization named ‘Natal IndianCongress’ in 1894. After he came acrossan ancient Indian literature known as‘Tirukkural’, which was originallywritten in Tamil and later translatedinto many languages, Gandhi wasinfluenced by the idea of Satyagraha(devotion to the truth) and implementednon-violent protests around 1906. Afterspending 21 years in South Africa, wherehe fought for civil rights, he hadtransformed into a new person and hereturned to India in 1915.

5THE INDIAN PANORAMAFRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2019 TRIBUTE

the British, Gandhi had earned thereputation as a nationalist, theorist andorganiser. Gopal Krishna Gokhale, asenior leader of the Indian NationalCongress, invited Gandhi to join India’sstruggle for independence against theBritish Rule. Gokhale thoroughly guidedMohandas Karamchand Gandhi aboutthe prevailing political situation in Indiaand also the social issues of the time. Hethen joined the Indian National Congressand before taking over the leadership in1920, headed many agitations which henamed Satyagraha.

Champaran SatyagrahaThe Champaran agitation in 1917 was

the first major success of Gandhi afterhis arrival in India. The peasants of thearea were forced by the British landlordsto grow Indigo, which was a cash crop, but its demand had been declining. Tomake the matters worse, they wereforced to sell their crops to the plantersat a fixed price. The farmers turned toGandhiji for help. Pursuing a strategy ofnonviolent agitation, Gandhi took theadministration by surprise and wassuccessful in getting concessions fromthe authorities. This campaign markedGandhi’s arrival in India.

Non-cooperation Movement Non-cooperation Movement was one of

Gandhi’s most important movementsagainst the British. Gandhi’s urged hisfellow countrymen to stop co-operationwith the British. He believed that theBritish succeeded in India only becauseof the co-operation of the Indians. Hehad cautioned the British not to pass theRowlatt Act, but they did not pay anyattention to his words and passed theAct. As announced, Gandhiji askedeveryone to start civil disobedienceagainst the British. The British begansuppressing the civil disobediencemovement by force and opened fire on apeaceful crowd in Delhi. The Britishasked Gandhiji to not enter Delhi whichhe defied as a result of which he wasarrested and this further enraged peopleand they rioted. He urged people to showunity, non-violence and respect forhuman life. But the British respondedaggressively to this and arrested manyprotesters.

On 13 April 1919, a British officer, Dyer, ordered his forces to open fire on apeaceful gathering, including womenand children, in Amritsar’s JallianwalaBagh. As a result of this, hundreds ofinnocent Hindu and Sikh civilians werekilled. The incident is known as‘Jallianwala Bagh Massacre’. ButGandhi criticized the protesters insteadof blaming the English and askedIndians to use love while dealing withthe hatred of British. He urged theIndians to refrain from all kinds of non-violence and went on fast-to-death topressure Indians to stop their rioting.

SwarajThe concept of non-cooperation

became very popular and startedspreading through the length andbreadth of India. Gandhi extended thismovement and focused on Swaraj. Heurged people to stop using British goods. He also asked people to resign fromgovernment employment, quit studyingin British institutions and stoppracticing in law courts. However, theviolent clash in Chauri Chaura town ofUttar Pradesh, in February 1922, forcedGandhiji to call-off the movement all of asudden. Gandhi was arrested on 10thMarch 1922 and was tried for sedition. He

was sentenced to six yearsimprisonment, but served only two yearsin prison.

Dandi MarchDuring the period of 1920s, Mahatma

Gandhi concentrated on resolving thewedge between the Swaraj Party and theIndian National Congress. In 1927,British had appointed Sir John Simon asthe head of a new constitutional reformcommission, popularly known as ‘SimonCommission’. There was not even asingle Indian in the commission.Agitated by this, Gandhi passed aresolution at the Calcutta Congress inDecember 1928, calling on the Britishgovernment to grant India dominionstatus. In case of non-compliance withthis demand, the British were to face anew campaign of non-violence, havingits goal as complete independence for thecountry. The resolution was rejected bythe British. The flag of India wasunfurled by the Indian national Congresson 31st December 1929 at its Lahoresession. January 26, 1930 was celebratedas the Independence Day of India.

But the British failed to recognize itand soon they levied a tax on salt andSalt Satyagraha was launched in March1930, as an opposition to this move.Gandhi started the Dandi March with hisfollowers in March, going from

Ahmedabad to Dandi on foot. The protestwas successful and resulted in theGandhi-Irwin Pact in March 1931.

Negotiations over Round Table Conferences

Post the Gandhi-Irwin Pact, Gandhiwas invited to round table conferencesby the British. While Gandhi pressed forthe Indian independence, Britishquestioned Gandhi’s motives and askedhim not to speak for the entire nation. They invited many religious leaders andB. R. Ambedkar to represent theuntouchables. The British promisedmany rights to various religious groupsas well as the untouchables. Fearing thismove would divide India further, Gandhiprotested against this by fasting. Afterlearning about the true intentions of theBritish during the second conference, hecame up with another Satyagraha, forwhich he was once again arrested.

Quit India MovementAs the World War II progressed,

Mahatma Gandhi intensified hisprotests for the complete independenceof India. He drafted a resolution callingfor the British to Quit India. The 'QuitIndia Movement' or the 'Bharat ChhodoAndolan' was the most aggressivemovement launched by the Indian

national Congrees under the leadershipof Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi wasarrested on 9th August 1942 and washeld for two years in the Aga KhanPalace in Pune, where he lost hissecretary, Mahadev Desai and his wife,Kasturba. The Quit India Movementcame to an end by the end of 1943, whenthe British gave hints that completepower would be transferred to thepeople of India. Gandhi called off themovement which resulted in therelease of 100,000 political prisoners.

Freedom and Partition of IndiaThe independence cum partition

proposal offered by the British CabinetMission in 1946 was accepted by theCongress, despite being advised otherwiseby Mahatma Gandhi. Sardar Patelconvinced Gandhi that it was the only wayto avoid civil war and he reluctantly gavehis consent. After India's independence,Gandhi focused on peace and unity ofHindus and Muslims. He launched his lastfast-unto-death in Delhi, and asked peopleto stop communal violence andemphasized that the payment of Rs. 55crores, as per the Partition Councilagreement, be made to Pakistan.Ultimately, all political leaders concededto his wishes and he broke his fast.

AssassinationThe inspiring life of Mahatma Gandhi

came to an end on 30th January 1948,when he was shot by a fanatic, NathuramGodse, at point-blank range. Nathuramwas a Hindu radical, who held Gandhiresponsible for weakening India byensuring the partition payment toPakistan. Godse and his co-conspirator,Narayan Apte, were later tried andconvicted. They were executed on 15thNovember 1949.

Mahatma Gandhi’s LegacyMahatma Gandhi proposed the

acceptance and practice of truth, non-violence, vegetarianism, Brahmacharya(celibacy), simplicity and faith in God.Though he would be remembered foreveras the man who fought for Indianindependence, his greatest legacies arethe tools he used in his fight against theBritish. These methods inspired severalother world leaders in their struggleagainst injustice. His statues areinstalled all over the world and he isconsidered the most prominentpersonality in Indian history.

INSPIRING QUOTES Be the change that you want to

see in the world.

A man is but a product of histhoughts. What he thinks hebecomes.

I will not let anyone walk throughmy mind with their dirty feet.

Nobody can hurt me without mypermission.

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you doare in harmony

The weak can never forgive.Forgiveness is an attribute of thestrong.

An ounce of practice is worth athousand words.

A coward is incapable ofexhibiting love; it is theprerogative of the brave.

Live as if you were to dietomorrow. Learn as if you were tolive forever.

As bad air season nears, India lags behind on AQI monitoring

NEW DELHI (TIP): India has one air qualitymonitoring station for every 7 million people whileChina has over eight times that number, according totop environmental scientists who believe that the scaleof the air pollution problem affecting Indians may bemore severe than understood due to lack of adequatemonitoring.

India will need at least 1,600 more monitoringstations to make up for the shortfall, according to aprojection by a team made up of scientists from IndianInstitute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, IIT Kanpur andIndian pollution research group UrbanEmissions.info, and Canadian academicians.

“What we cannot monitor we cannot maintain — be ithealth, economy or air quality. At present the numberof air quality monitoring stations is inadequate inIndia and therefore it is very difficult to get a properpicture,” said SN Tripathi, head of the civilengineering department at IIT-Kanpur and one of thescientists involved in the report.

Much of north India, especially the Indo-Gangeticplains, reels under hazardous levels of pollution formost of the winter months. The air pollution in thenational capital of Delhi, where the crisis triggeredclosure of schools and advisories to avoid the outdoorsin recent years, has been linked to shorter life spans byseveral studies.

The condition in other cities may also be alarming.“Only about 5% of our census towns are monitored

now. Alternative methods such as satellite monitoringand low-cost monitoring can help us do better mappingof pollution and exposure to inform action. But citieswill still need some reference regulatory monitors toassess trend and compliance with clean air targets,”said Anumita Roy Chowdhury, executive director(research and advocacy), of Centre for Science andEnvironment.

Money laundering case: ED seeks Vadra’s custody

NEW DELHI (TIP): The Enforcement Directorate(ED) told the Delhi High Court that it wantedcustodial interrogation of Robert Vadra because the“money chain” in money laundering case was“directly linked to him”.

Denying the ED claims, Vadra’slawyer said his client had cooperated in theinvestigation by appearing before the agencywhenever summoned. He said his client answeredthe questions put to him by the ED. “Not confessing”to allegations against him does not mean he was notcooperating, he said. Vikram had hard-landing; NASA releasesimages of Chandrayaan 2 landing site

WASHINGTON (TIP): Vikram had a "hard landing",NASA said on Friday, as it released high-resolutionimages captured by its reconnaissance orbiter of theMoon's unchartered south pole where the Chandrayaan2 lander attempted to soft-land during the ambitiousmission three weeks ago.

The module had attempted a soft landing on a smallpatch of lunar highland smooth plains betweenSimpelius N and Manzinus C craters before losingcommunication with ISRO on September 7.

The site was about 600 km from the south pole in arelatively ancient terrain, according to the US spaceagency.

"Vikram had a hard landing and the precise locationof the spacecraft in the lunar highlands has yet to bedetermined,” the National Aeronautics and SpaceAdministration said.

“The scene was captured from a LunarReconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Quickmap fly-around of the targeted landing site image width isabout 150 kilometres across the centre."

Vikram was scheduled to touch down on September 7.This event was India's first attempt to soft land on theMoon and could have propelled it into a select club ofcountries to have landed on the lunar surface.

After Vikram lost contact with ground stations, just2.1 km above the touchdown site, the possibility ofestablishing contact with the lander had a deadline ofSeptember 21, because after that the region entered intoa lunar night.

ISRO had said the mission life of the Vikram landerand the Pragyan rover it carried will be one lunar day, which is equal to 14 Earth days.

The lunar nights can be very cold, especially in thesouth polar region where Vikram is lying.

Temperatures could drop to as low as minus 200 degreesCelsius during the lunar night.

The instruments aboard the lander are not designedto withstand that kind of temperature. The electronicswould not work in absence of solar energy and wouldget permanently damaged.

The NASA orbiter passed over the Vikram landingsite on September 17 and acquired a set of high-resolution images of the area; so far the LROC team hasnot been able to locate or image the lander.

“LRO will next fly over the landing site on October 14when lighting conditions will be more favourable,”John Keller, Deputy Project Scientist LunarReconnaissance Orbiter Mission, Goddard Space FlightCentre, told PTI via email.

"It was dusk when the landing area was imaged andthus large shadows covered much of the terrain; it ispossible that the Vikram lander is hiding in a shadow. The lighting will be favourable when LRO passes overthe site in October and once again attempts to locateand image the lander," NASA said.

AYODHYA CASE

NEW DELHI (TIP): TheSupreme Court on Thursday onceagain stressed on the need tocomplete arguments in the Ayodhyaland dispute case by October 18. “Ifarguments can’t get over by October18, there won’t be extra day,” ChiefJustice of India Ranjan Gogoi toldboth sides arguing the case.

The CJI said the bench will haveonly four weeks to write thejudgment and it will be a “miracle”if the court delivers the judgment infour weeks. Justice Gogoi retires asthe CJI on November 17.

The five-judge bench comprisingChief Justice of India RanjanGogoi, and justices SA Bobde, DYChandrachud, Ashok Bhushan andS Abdul Nazeer had last week setOctober 18 target to completehearing in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land title case. The CJIhad called for a joint effort from allparties.

The mediation panel comprisedformer SC judge FMI Kalifulla, spiritual guru and founder of Artof Living founder Sri SriRavishankar and senior advocateSriram Panchu, a renownedmediator.

The panel had conductednegotiations between Hindu andMuslim litigants for over fourmonths to explore the possibility ofan out-of-court settlement. The

panel was initially given eightweeks to explore the possibility ofa settlement, but on May 10, afterthe panel submitted an interimreport to the court, the SC?grantedit an extension of three months, tillAugust 15.

The bench started holding dailyhearings from August to fast-trackthe case that has been pending fordecades after a Supreme Courtappointed mediation committeefailed to develop a consensusamong the parties for a solution.

The mediation proposal was

opposed by the Uttar Pradeshgovernment and the Hindu parties, except the Nirmohi Akhara, one ofthe main parties to the civil suit. The mediation suggestion washowever welcomed by the Muslimside.

More than a dozen appeals werefiled against the 2010 AllahabadHigh Court judgment, delivered infour civil suits, that the 2.77-acreland in Ayodhya be partitionedequally among the three parties—the Sunni Waqf Board, theNirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.

8 THE INDIAN PANORAMAFRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2019EDITORIAL

It is perhaps for the best that the U.S.-Taliban talks were called off earlierthis month. The Taliban leadership's

proposed visit to Camp David in theUnited States would have led to a slew ofsignificant geopolitical changes withimplications for the region and beyond.

Perhaps the Taliban became far toogreedy and impatient, or the U.S.President has pulled out what he thinks isthe Trump card to gain a negotiatingadvantage especially given that theAmerican establishment is not too happywith the deal. There were misgivingsabout the deal that the chief U.S.negotiator to Afghanistan, ZalmayKhalilzad, was about to ink with theTaliban.

Back to square oneThe Taliban, having fought against and

displaced the powerful coalition forcesover the past 18 years, has the luxury oftime on its side, even as it is steadilyincreasing its political legitimacy withinAfghanistan. Recall that this is not thefirst time U.S.-Taliban talks are breakingdown, and every time the Americans havehad to come around to negotiating again.Mr. Donald Trump on the other hand maynot have the luxury of time. As for theinternational community, it has growntired of the Afghan story.

In any case, we are back to anotherseason of heavy fighting in Afghanistanwith devastating attacks being mountedby the Taliban far more frequently thanbefore.

What implications does the cancellationof U.S.-Afghan talks have for the volatileSouth Asian region in general and forIndia in particular?

Implications for AfghanistanThe direct fallout of the American

pullout from the negotiations is morebloodshed in the country. The gloves arenow off (not that the Taliban was greatlyrestrained earlier) and the Taliban hasalready started carrying out major attackswith the American troops fighting back. However, the current dispensation inAfghanistan, led by President AshrafGhani, might not be too displeased withthe outcome. The September 28 electionsare likely to go ahead, and Mr. Ghani has achance to continue as President withouthaving to share power with the Taliban - aprospect Kabul has been uneasy about for

a long time - to the extent that he activelydiscouraged all talks with the Taliban thatdid not involve Kabul. The Ghanigovernment will also be pleased with thefact that U.S. troops are likely to continuein the country, for if left alone thegovernment will not survive long.

The larger question that should concernthe Afghan people is whether the Talibanis a changed lot or not. The Taliban hasbeen making direct and indirectassertations about how they are a much-evolved group on the question of girls'education, treatment of women andminorities, among others. But these areclaims at best and that is precisely why adeal with the Taliban should includecommitments on its domestic behavior.

What it means for IndiaEven with a properly negotiated deal,

the ascent of the Taliban in Afghanistanwould have meant a certain amount ofregional uncertainty and geopoliticalrecalibration. Pakistan, for instance, hasbeen counting on the return of theTaliban in Afghanistan which it deeplybelieves gives it strategic depth vis-à-visIndia. Pakistani triumphalism in thecontext of Afghanistan would have meantpinpricks for India. Now that there is nodeal between the Taliban and the U.S.,there is likely to be more violenceinternally within Afghanistan while theexternal implications would be more orless contained. This calculus mightchange if and when the Taliban returns topower and foreign troops withdraw.

India's best bet in Afghanistan would bea negotiated withdrawal of foreign troopsfrom Afghanistan, for this would checkthe Taliban's proclivity to engage in

trouble- making outside Afghan territory.A non-negotiated withdrawal of U.S.

forces would be the worst-case scenario forIndia even though that is unlikely tohappen. This will mean little check on theTaliban's behavior at home and in theneighborhood. It will also enhancePakistan's ability to control elements ofthe Taliban for tactical or strategic anti-Indian uses.

Once the Taliban returns to power inAfghanistan, on its own or as part of apower-sharing arrangement, Indiancivilian assets and interests inAfghanistan could come under increasedpressure. Today, with the Pakistani side upin arms against India, thanks to NewDelhi's Kashmir decision, the possibilityof the Taliban going against Indianinterests is much higher, if we were toassume Pakistan to be a major influenceon the Taliban's actions.

The Kashmir questionKashmir in many ways will continue to

be at the center of how the emerginggeopolitical situation in Afghanistan willimpact India. While it is true that a repeatof the late 1980s, when scores ofunemployed Afghan fighters turned up inKashmir at the behest of the Pakistaniagencies, is unlikely to happen today for anumber of reasons, including due tophysical barriers and the amassing ofIndian troops on the border, somepresence of the Taliban fighters cannot be

ruled out. More significantly, however, if anon-negotiated withdrawal of the U.S.forces takes place, it could lead to an openseason for Taliban's regional engagementwhich could potentially be influenced byPakistan's strategic calculations. Even ifthere is a deal between the U.S. and theTaliban, the fact that the Taliban will have"forced" the Americans out ofAfghanistan would provide a shot in thearm to Pakistan, and young Kashmiriswho are willing to take up arms againstthe Indian state. "If a superpower like theU.S. can be pushed out of Afghanistan bythe Taliban with help from Pakistan, would it be too difficult to beat India?" isthe argument doing the rounds amongsections of aggrieved Kashmiri youth.

The manner in which talks between theTaliban and the U.S., were beingconducted would have led to negativeconsequences for New Delhi. To thatextent, the breakdown of the Trump-Taliban talks is advantage India. The U.S.and the international community, whilepicking up the threads of negotiations inthe days ahead, will need to ensure thatthere are enough guarantees built into adeal to disincentivize undesirableexternal behavior by the Taliban.

India, on its part, needs to reach out tothe Taliban, not to recognize it but toengage with it, in its own nationalinterest. In fact, we are already pretty latein this game, and with the Chinese,Pakistanis and even the Russiansconverging on the importance of thereturn of the Taliban to the Afghanscheme of things, one wonders whetherIndia will ever be able to make inroadsinto the higher echelons of the Taliban. Inany case, any outreach from the Indianside would make the government in Kabulled by Mr. Ghani, unhappy. This leavesIndia in a difficult situation. Hence, suchan outreach will also need to be carefullycalibrated and discreetly executed.

developed country with developingcountry's problems.Just look at therecent report presented by the IndianCouncil of Medical Research, PublicHealth Foundation of India andNational Institute of Nutrition. Two ofthree deaths in children are due tomalnutrition . Despite India 's 50%increase of GDP since 1991, more than

1/3 of world's malnourished childrenlive in India. Among these, 1/2 ofchildren are under weight and the 1/3of wealthiest children in India areoverweight or obese. What a paradox!

Prime Minister Modi in his mega UNaddress, very succinctly expressedabout Vishwa shanti. Mahatma Gandhionce said, "If we are to teach real peacein the world.......we shall have to beginwith the children."

9THE INDIAN PANORAMAFRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2019 PERSPECTIVE

There is a famous Roman saying, 'Ifyou can't give them bread, give themcircuses" fits more on Modi than

any other leader in the democratic world.Howdy Modi in Houston (USA) was

another circus like ongoing circusesinIndia since 2014; Ram Mandir, CowProtection, Namami Gange, SwachhBharat Abhiyan, Yoga Day, abolition ofArticle 370, etc. by PM Modi to divertattention from the rapidly sinking India;financially, industrially, militarily, morallyand ethically.

Modi has become master in the art oforganizing multimillion-dollarextravaganza circuses as a political leader. The 2-year long circus (Presidential stylecampaign) prior to his becoming PM ofIndia in 2014 costing over Rs. 30,000 crorecalled "Acchey Din Aaney Wale Hain""Abki Baar Modi Sarkar" (Good Days arecoming because Modi government iscoming!) With 185 shows in 295constituencies; Modi promises "SabkaSaath Sabka Vikas" (Collective Efforts, inclusive Growth). In reality under Modi, the share of the wealth of the richest 1%has increased to 73% in 2018, from 49% in2014 and now they own 85% of the nation'swealth. In the name of "Acchey Din AaneyWale Hai" India now stands 103rd from55th in 2014 on the Global Hunger Indexalong with Nigeria and has beencategorized as a country with 'serious'levels of hunger.

Again this Circus was revived prior to2019 elections under the banner ofunfulfilled promises"Sabka Saath SabhkaVikas" made in 2014 with a very heavydash of Hindutva because of the massive

job losses, hunger, poverty, massive non-performing loans with banks & closures ofnumerous businesses under Modi's 5 yearsof rule. All the government machinery, corporate money, massive cash fromdubious sources and 95% media were atModi's disposal. Modi was instrumental ingiving party ticket to known communal, criminals, rapist, bomb makers andterrorist accused. Modi won the electionswith a bigger margin than 2014! Accordingto ADR, Modi inducted 22 criminals in hisnew cabinet of Ministers.

After winning again in 2019; HowdyModi is Modi's first circus in a foreigncountry and 3rd in USA since 2014. Modithe star campaigner for himself & thosewho support him had a shock of his lifewhen he got a hard slap from US HouseMajority Leader Steny Hoyer indirectlyrejecting his style of functioning and hisvision for India. Modi who is used to ofbashing rather abusing Father of theNation Mahatma Gandhi and first PMJawahar Lal Nehru in his all politicalrallies; was forced to learn history of Indiaand how the foreigners look at India.Steny Hoyer said, "India, like America, isproud of its ancient traditions to secure afuture according to Gandhi's teaching andNehru's vision of India as a seculardemocracy where respect for pluralismand human rights safeguard everyindividual." He also recalled that Nehru onthe eve of Independence had spoken ofGandhi's ambition "to wipe every tearfrom every eye" and that "as long as thereare tears and suffering, so long our workwill not be over." "In that sense, the work ofour countries is not over."

A shameless and self-praising Modi afterthat spoke in 8-10 Indian languages, "All iswell in India". He is PromotingTransparency, Public Participation &anti-corruption by Gutting the Right toInformation, turning the CBI & ED intoagencies that gives Free Ride to thepoliticians & corporates that are on hisside of the political divide!

As per the Periodic Labor Force Survey(PLFS) of the National Sample SurveyOffice (NSSO). The Worker PopulationRatio in India from 49.9% in 2014 stands ata record low of 46.8%. Employment Rateof 50.80% in 2012 and is now at a record lowof 46.80% in 2018. The unemployment is6.1% with 31 million unemployed ishighest in 45 years.

Recent Gallup surveyrevealed a bigdecline in the percentage of Indians whorate their lives positively enough to rate itas "thriving" since Modi assumed office."Beginning in 2015, rural Indians beganreporting increased difficulty paying for

food." More than one in four rural Indians(28%) reported not having enough moneyto pay for food at some point that year(compared with 18% of urban Indians whoreported the same hardship)."

India Tops the Global Charts in;Malnourishment, Blindness, Diabetes,Leprosy, Environmental Pollution, TrafficAccidents and Suicides by Farmers. Lagsbehind; Bangladesh in HumanDevelopment Index, Nigeria in GlobalHunger Index, Sudan in Human CapitalScore, & Pakistan in GDP Growth Rate.

GDP from over 8% in 2014 has fallen tobelow 5% in real terms. According toRBI,GNPAs of banks (bad loans) have goneup from Rs 2.63 lakh crore in March 31,2014 to Rs 10.39 lakh crore as of March 31,2018. A nearly four-fold increase underModi regime.

According to Modi, still "All is well inIndia"!

Modi all these years as PM of 1.35 BillionIndians has miserably failed to understandthat "Leaders are defined by what they do,not how much they talk and how well theydress up". After the euphoria, showmanship, theatrics and symbolismatHowdy Modi; when Modi landed in NewYork for country's business, despite callingTrump his close buddy and acting like hiscampaign manager with Indian's money atHowdy Modi failed to get the Indo-USbilateral Trade deal signed. India had beenexpecting reinstatement to theGeneralized System of Preferences, underwhich it gets better access to the USmarket, which was revoked in June thisyear. This also never materialized. Thismeans that nearly 2,000 products, including auto products and textiles, andup to $5.6 billion in Indian exports can nolonger enter the United States duty-free.Asa consolation prize; Trump crowned Modias Elvis Presley and Father of Indiaknowing it too well that Mahatma Gandhiis the Father of the Indian Nation since itsbirth. Pathetically Modi accepted both theTitles awarded to him by his close buddyTrump without raising any objections.

The worst is Modi failed to get Trump'sstatement that "Kashmir is India's internalmatter". Rather Trump made a statementthat India and Pakistan should sought outKashmir issue amicably. Also he againretreated his past statement that if bothleaders of India and Pakistan agrees, "he iswilling to mediate on the issue ofKashmir." That makes "Kashmir" bilateralissue rather than internal issue of India.Saudi Arabia that was supporting India tillFeb. 2019 on Kashmir supported theresolution of OIC that represent 57 states

on 9-26-19 calling on India to "rescind" itsactions revoking Article 370 in criticizingthe government's actions there. In 2017Saudi's conferred the highest CivilianAward to Modi during his Riyadh visit. Inearly 2019 Saudi Prince MSB called Modihis elder brother during his visit to India! It's the biggest Diplomatic failure for Modiin the international arena.

Modi must stop doing circuses in foreigncountries; a new and rather vulgar trendhe started in 2014 is hurting India & NRI'simage in the world. Many Indian PMs havevisited USA many times in the history, yetthey keep expenditures in mind. After allthe Indians pay taxes for theirexpenditures.

PM Nehru's visit to the US in Nov. 1949:without any special PR campaign, NRIcrowd management or hyped-up mediapublicitya large crowd of Americans notIndians only gathered at the University ofWisconsin-Madison to listen to his speech.

Now, 50,000 Indian / Indian origin deadsouls gathered to hear Narendra Modi'sblatant lies in a multimillion-dollarcircussponsored by Modi's Indiancorporate friends & NRI rich supportersand Indian taxpayers in Houston. Entiremainstream Indian media & blindfollowers of Modi are calling it as a hugesuccess and Modi's greatestaccomplishment.Modi & his supporterscannot change the history that JawaharlalNehru remains the only Indian PrimeMinister to be greeted on arrival at theairport by a US President -and it happenedtwice: President Harry S Truman in 1949 &President John F Kennedy in 1961 bothreceived him off the plane.

Howdy Modi rather "Rowdy Modi"wasnoteven Howdy India. Modi has impairedvision of secular democracy where respectfor pluralism and human rights for everyindividual is safe guarded by the state. Hehas failed miserably on this account. Evenhis vision of Hinduism is impairedbecause Religious texts and Historycannot be read and understood in dreams.By hosting Modi in Houston, IndianAmerican organizers haveinsultedHouston; an inclusive city where every 4thperson is an immigrant, with 145languages, 70 countries menus & peoplefrom more than 100 countries are living inpeace and harmony.Majority of thesefinancially successful NRI's still feel asthey are 2nd grade citizens of America. The only way they can have limelight toboost their ego is by posing with corruptleaders of India in USA and gettinggarbage civilian awards from India. Thesame type of politicians in the first placeforced them to leave India because of theirimpaired vision of Democracy, Freedomand corruption free governance.

Trump ‘sought Ukraine’s help’ for 2020

Whistleblower says White House tried to 'lock down' details of phone call toPrez Zelenskiy

WASHINGTON (TIP): Awhistleblower report released by acongressional panel on Thursday, Sept26 said President Donald Trump usedhis office to solicit Ukraine'sinterference in the 2020 election toadvance his personal political interests, risking US national security.

The Trump administration officialstried to "lock down" all details of USPresident Donald Trump's phone call tohis Ukrainian counterpart VolodymyrZelensky, it said.

The Democratic-led US House ofRepresentatives Intelligence Committeereleased a declassifiedversion of thereport made by the whistleblower, which triggered weeks of controversyand prompted House Speaker NancyPelosi to launch a formal impeachmentinquiry into the Republican President.

"I am deeply concerned that theactions described below constitute 'aserious or flagrant problem, abuse, orviolation of law or executive order' that'does not include differences of opinionconcerning public policy matters',consistent with the definition of an'urgent concern'," the report said.

Trump pressed Ukrainian PresidentVolodymyr Zelenskiy to investigateDemocratic presidential front-runnerJoe Biden, in coordination with USAttorney General William Barr andTrump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, according to a call summary releasedby the Trump administration.

Moments after the whistleblowerreport was made public, the committeebegan a hearing at which acting Director

of National Intelligence, JosephMaguire, was set to testify about thedocument after refusing for weeks toshare the report with Congress. Sayingthat more than six White House officialshad made contact about Trump'scommunication with Ukraine, the reportcited concerns that efforts to putpressure on Ukraine "pose risks to USnational security", undermining efforts"to deter and counter foreigninterference in US elections". Trump hasdenied wrongdoing and accusedDemocrats of trying to destroy himpolitically.

A federal law required that the reportbe sent to lawmakers after an inspectorgeneral determined that it was urgent

and credible. Shortly before thehearing, the intelligence committee'schairman, Democratic RepresentativeAdam Schiff, announced that it hadreceived the declassified complaint andreleased it to the public. "Thiscomplaint should never have beenwithheld from Congress. It exposedserious wrongdoing and was found bothurgent and credible by the InspectorGeneral," he said.

Trump denounced the report. "Thedemocrats are trying to destroy therepublican party and all that it standsfor," he tweeted.

What the complaint saysThe whistleblower received info from

US officials that Trump used his office tosolicit interference from a foreigncountry ahead of the 2020 US election. The interference included pressuring aforeign country to investigate one ofTrump's "main domestic political rivals"

Trump's personal lawyer RudyGiuliani is a central figure in theinterference report, and AttorneyGeneral William Barr also appeared tobe involved. The complaint citesconcerns that efforts to pressureUkraine "pose risks to US nationalsecurity" and undermine efforts "todeter and counter foreign interferencein US elections"

White House lawyers directed that anelectronic transcript of the Trump-Zelenskiy call be removed from acomputer system. About one dozenWhite House officials listened to theTrump-Zelenskiy call.

Saudi Arabia to offer tourist visas for first timeRIYADH / WASHINGTON (TIP):

Saudi Arabia said on Friday, September27, it will offer tourist visas for the firsttime, opening up the ultra-conservativekingdom to holidaymakers as part of apush to diversify its economy away fromoil.

Kickstarting tourism is one of thecenterpieces of Crown PrinceMohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030reform program to prepare the biggestArab economy for a post-oil era.

The announcement comes just twoweeks after devastating attacks on SaudiArabia's oil infrastructure -- blamed byWashington on Iran -- which roiledglobal energy markets.

"Opening Saudi Arabia tointernational tourists is a historicmoment for our country," tourism chiefAhmed al-Khateeb said in a statement.

will be surprised... by the treasureswe have to share -- five UNESCO WorldHeritage Sites, a vibrant local cultureand breathtaking natural beauty." SaudiArabia will open applications for onlinetourist visas to citizens of 49 countries

on Saturday, Bloomberg News quotedKhateeb as saying.

The austere kingdom, which forbidsalcohol and has a strict social code, isseen by many as a hard sell for tourists.

Prince Mohammed is seeking tochange that through a sweepingliberalizationdrive that has brought newcinemas, mixed-gender concerts andsporting extravaganzas to Saudi Arabia.

International criticism of thekingdom's human rights record, including the gruesome murder lastyear of critic Jamal Khashoggi and acrackdown on female activists, couldfurther put off foreign visitors, observers say.

Fears of a regional conflict after theSeptember 14 attacks on state oil giantAramco may also dampen the kingdom'sappeal to holidaymakers.

Visas are currently restricted to expatworkers, their dependents and Muslimpilgrims travelling to holy sites inMecca and Medina.

Saudi Arabia last year began issuingvisas to visitors to attend sporting and

cultural events in a bid to kickstarttourism.

The government, reeling from low oilprices, says it hopes tourism willcontribute up to 10 per cent of the grossdomestic product by 2030, compared tothree percent currently.

It says by 2030 it aims to attract up to100 million annual visits by bothdomestic and foreign tourists.

The sector is expected to create up toone million tourism jobs, thegovernment says, as the kingdom battleshigh youth unemployment.

Saudi Arabia has splurged billions inan attempt to build a tourism industryfrom scratch.

In 2017, the kingdom announced amulti-billion-dollar project to turn 50islands and other pristine sites on theRed Sea into luxury resorts. The countryis also developing historic sites such asthe centuries old Mada'in Saleh, home tosandstone tombs of the samecivilization which built the Jordaniancity of Petra.

"It wasn't just that movie, it was everyday of my life, all the time, with everyproject I worked on and every producer Iworked with. It preceded a breaking

I didn't wantto be seen, I didn't want to have to take aphoto, do a magazine, walk a carpet, Ididn't want to be seen in public at allbecause of the fear, and the belief, andthe absolute certainty that I was going tobe mocked, or spat at, or someone wasgoing to yell at me, or people would stoneme or savage me for just being out, so Iwent through a very dark moment afterthat," Fox told an Americanentertainment television newsmagazine.

Moore shares details about their sex life in her memoir. “Iput him first, so when he expressed his fantasy of bringing athird person into our bed, I didn’t say no. I wanted to showhim how great and fun I could be.”

“They were good people, but it was still a mistake. I wasstrangely flooded with shame, I couldn’t shake the feeling thatthis whole thing was somehow my fault,” Moore wrote.

The actress claims that the openness in their relationshipwas the cause of Kutcher ultimately straying. “Because wehad brought in a third party into our relationship, Ashtonsaid, that blurred the lines and, to some extent, justified whathe’s done.”

China, Kiribatiestablish diplomatic

relationsBEIJING (TIP): China and Kiribati

have established diplomatic relations,Chinese state media reported onSeptember 28, days after the tinyPacific island nation severed ties withTaiwan.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yiand Kiribati’s President TanetiMamau on Friday signed a jointcommunique to establish diplomaticrelations between the two countrieson the sidelines of the UN climatesummit, Xinhua reported.

The move is a coup for Beijing justdays before it marks the 70thanniversary of the founding of thePeople’s Republic of China, and comesa week after the Solomon Islands alsodropped diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

And it leaves the self-ruled islandmore isolated than ever with just 15states left that recognise it. Taiwanhas been a de facto sovereign nationsince the end of a civil war in 1949, butChina still views the island as itsterritory and has vowed to seize it--byforce if necessary.

Over the decades, as China’seconomic and military power hasgrown, most countries, including theUnited States and most Westernnations, switched recognition toBeijing. Only a handful still recogniseTaiwan, largely in Latin America andthe Pacific. Taipei has accused Beijingof using “dollar diplomacy” to buy offits few remaining allies. AFP

With the onset of the festiveseason, beginning withNavratrithis Saturday, many

people get busy with the annual festivecleaning ritual which also includes paintfinishes, incorporating new furnishingsand shopping, among others.

And one of the most important areas ofthe home, which can be called the heartof the house, is the kitchen.

Kitchen these days have become asecond living room where families tendto spend time together creatingmemories. Which is why it becomesessential to give some importance to thekitchen as well, by adding some vibrancyto it.

Here are dos and don’ts to considerwhen making your kitchen festive-ready.

DosCHOICE OF COLOUR: The style andsize of your kitchen, and how itcomplements your overall home d cor, play an important role in choosing thecolour. Since the range of coloursavailable is vast, it shouldn’t be toogaudy for you to dislike it in the future.

2. Soothing touch: Kitchen is a spacethat is frequently visited by everyone inthe house. It is a space to not only cookbut also grab a quick bite, hence shouldhave a calming effect. Glossy lightcolours lend a chic look to the kitchen, and also give it a soothing effect.APPLICATION OF COLOUR: Colourdoesn t always have to be added to walls. You can opt for a combination ofcoloured and textured shutters to addsome vibrancy to the kitchen.

Don’tsOPT FOR ONE SHADE: Never addcolour to the entire kitchen as it maylook fancy initially but slowly you willstart getting bored of the same. Mix itwith neutral and pastel shades to set theperfect tone.DARK COLOURS: Dark and extrabright colours usually suit a biggerspace. Don’t choose extremely bright or

dark colours in case your kitchen issmall because such shades make thekitchen look even more smaller.FUNKY COLOURS: If you wish toexperiment with a funky colour, you maydo so in another part of the house but nothere as it ruins the warm and welcomingfeel of the space.

Kitchen Cleaning HacksKEEP YOUR DISPOSAL SMELLING

FRESH: Few things are quite asoffputting as a smelly disposal. One ofour favorite kitchen sink cleaning hacksis lemon ice cubes. To make them, simplyfill an ice cube tray with lemon wedges, rock salt, and water. Once frozen, pop the

cubes down the drain and run yourgarbage disposal until the ice is gone.Rock salt scrubs the blades while icehelps knock off any gunk and grime.REJUVENATE OLD BAKING

SHEETS USING HYDROGEN

PEROXIDE AND BAKING SODA:

The dynamic duo of baking soda andhydrogen peroxide can restore morethan just your sinks and tub—it canmake even your most battered bakingsheets (get it?) look brand new again.Simply layer your sheet with bakingsoda followed by a few sprays ofhydrogen peroxide, then finish withanother layer of baking soda. Now goback to watching that show on Netflix

and come back in a few hours to wipeyour restored baking sheets clean.CLEAN YOUR OVEN WHILE YOU

SLEEP: Forget autoclean—the high-temp oven setting is known to set off thefire alarm and can leave your kitchen ina smelly funk. Instead, fill up a spraybottle with your own homemade solutionof 1/3 cup water, 1/3 cup white vinegar, and 1/2 cup baking soda. After removingthe grates from your oven, coat the insidewith the solution, making sure to avoidthe heating elements. Close the door andhead to bed, letting the solution work itsmagic for up to 12 hours. When you wakeup, clean the oven with soapy water anddry using a plush cloth.POLISH WOODWORK WITH LEMON

OIL AND VINEGAR: Prefer naturalsolutions to commercial cleaners? ThisDIY wood polish leaves both a lovelyscent and shine. To make it, fill a spraybottle with 1 part lemon oil to 1 partwhite vinegar. Spray the solutiondirectly onto a dry microfiber cloth anduse it to wipe down your cabinets, pantrydoor, and baseboards.SOAK YOUR RANGE HOOD FILTER:

Wonder why your stove's hood vent ishidden behind that clunky shield? It'sbecause it gets greasy, dusty, and prettygross... really fast. The filter is just doingits job, but you don't have to live with allthat buildup. In your biggest pot, boilwater and gradually add 1/2 cup bakingsoda. Next, place the filter in the pot tosoak. The entire filter might not fit inyour pot, so soak each side separately ifnecessary. Once one side is clean, turnthe filter around and let the other sidesoak.

GREEN TEA COMPOUND MAYHELP FIGHT 'SUPERBUGS'

Anatural antioxidant commonly found in greentea may help eliminate antibiotic resistantbacteria or superbugs, according to a study.

The study, published in the Journal of MedicalMicrobiology, found that the antioxidantepigallocatechin (EGCG) can restore the activity ofaztreonam, an antibiotic commonly used to treatinfections caused by the bacterial pathogenPseudomonas aeruginosa.

P. aeruginosa is associated with serious respiratorytract and bloodstream infections and in recent yearshas become resistant to many major classes ofantibiotics, according to the researchers from theUniversity of Surrey in the UK.

Currently, a combination of antibiotics is used tofight P. aeruginosa.

However, these infections are becoming increasinglydifficult to treat, as resistance to last line antibiotics isbeing observed, researchers said.

To assess the synergy of EGCG and aztreonam, theteam conducted in-vitro tests to analyse how theyinteracted with the P. aeruginosa, individually and incombination.

Dengue virus is becomingresistant to vaccines

The mosquito-borne deadly dengue virus thatinfects about 400 million people globally everyyear—especially in the tropic and sub-tropic

regions of the world—is undergoing changes thatare helping it evade vaccines and therapeutics, according to a study.

The research, published in the journal PLOSPathogens, notes that one of the strains of the virus,DENV2 has smooth spherical surface particleswhile growing at the carrier mosquito'sphysiological temperature of 29 degrees Celsius.

According to the researchers including ProfessorPei-Yong Shi from the University of Texas MedicalBranch in the US, the smooth particles transforminto bumpy ones at the human physiologicaltemperature of 37 degrees Celsius.

This ability to morph helps the virus evade theimmune system of the human host, andunderstanding the mechanism behind thistransformation is important for therapeutics andvaccine development, the researchers mentioned.

"We found that in laboratory-developed DENV2strains, mutations in the virus' E protein caused itstransformation into bumpy particles," said Xin-NiLim, the study's lead author who is from the Duke-National University of Singapore Medical School.

High sugar consumption in childhoodincreases risk of adult obesity: Study

The high obesity ratescurrently observed amongadults in the US may have

been due to dietary changes thattook place decades ago, according toa study.

The research, published in thejournal Economics and HumanBiology noted that while manyhealth studies identified sugar as amajor factor in the obesityepidemic, its consumption in the USbegan to decline in the late 1990s,even when the obesity ratescontinued to rise well into the 2010s.

The researchers, from theUniversity of Tennessee (UT) in theUS, said that the changes we seenow in adult obesity rates may havestarted decades ago with high-sugardiets in childhood, when thosegrown-ups were children.

"While most public health studiesfocus on current behaviours anddiets, we took a novel approach andlooked at how the diets weconsumed in our childhood affectobesity levels now that we areadults," said Alex Bentley, leadresearcher of the study from UT.

The researchers noted that InTennessee alone, the adult obesityrate more than tripled, from about11 per cent in 1990 to almost 35 per

cent in 2016.According to the researchers, by

2016, nearly 40 percent of all adultsin the US, which was about 93million people, were affected byobesity.

Excess sugar consumption, particularly those in sugar-sweetened beverages, is a well-known contributor to bothchildhood and adult obesity, theresearchers said.

"Since the 1970s, many available

infant foods have been extremelyhigh in sugar," said Hillary Fouts, coauthor of the study from UT.

Fouts added that sugarconsumption during pregnancy wasknown to cause an increase in fatcells in children.

"Up to this point, no studies hadexplicitly explored the temporaldelay between increased sugarconsumption and rising obesityrates," said Damian Ruck co-authorof the study.

VENUS MAY HAVE BEENHABITABLE FOR BILLIONS

OF YEARS: NASA STUDYVenus may have hosted liquid

water for 2-3 billion years,until a dramatic

transformation starting over 700million years ago resurfacedaround 80 per cent of the planet, according to a NASA study.

The research gives a new view ofVenus's climatic history and mayhave implications for thehabitability of exoplanets insimilar orbits.

Forty years ago, NASA's PioneerVenus mission found tantalisinghints that Earth's 'twisted sister'planet may once have had a shallowocean's worth of water.

To see if Venus might ever havehad a stable climate capable ofsupporting liquid water, researchers from NASA GoddardInstitute for Space Studies (GISS) inthe US created a series of fivesimulations assuming differentlevels of water coverage.

In all five scenarios, they foundthat Venus was able to maintainstable temperatures between amaximum of about 50 degreesCelsius and a minimum of about 20degrees Celsius for around threebillion years.

A temperate climate might evenhave been maintained on Venustoday had there not been a series ofevents that caused a release, or'outgassing', of carbon dioxide storedin the rocks of the planet about 700-750 million years ago.

"Our hypothesis is that Venus mayhave had a stable climate for billionsof years. It is possible that the near-

global resurfacing event isresponsible for its transformationfrom an Earth-like climate to thehellish hot-house we see today," saidWay.

Three of the five scenarios studiedby researchers assumed thetopography of Venus as we see it todayand considered a deep ocean averaging310 metres, a shallow layer of wateraveraging 10 metres and a smallamount of water locked in the soil.

For comparison, they alsoincluded a scenario with Earth'stopography and a 310-metre oceanand, finally, a world completelycovered by an ocean of 158 metresdepth. To simulate theenvironmental conditions at 4.2billion years ago, 715 million yearsago and today, the researchers

adapted a 3D general circulationmodel to account for the increase insolar radiation as our Sun haswarmed up over its lifetime, as wellas for changing atmosphericcompositions.

Although many researchersbelieve that Venus is beyond theinner boundary of our solar system'shabitable zone and is too close to theSun to support liquid water, the newstudy suggests that this might not bethe case.

"Venus currently has almost twicethe solar radiation that we have atEarth. However, in all the scenarioswe have modelled, we have foundthat Venus could still supportsurface temperatures amenable forliquid water," said Michael Way fromGISS.

Google wins in 'right to beforgotten' fight with France

Google won its fight against tougher "right to beforgotten" rules after Europe's top court said onTuesday it does not have to remove links to

sensitive personal data worldwide, rejecting a Frenchdemand.

The case is seen as a test of whether Europe canextend its laws beyond its borders and whetherindividuals can demand the removal of personal datafrom internet search results without stifling free speechand legitimate public interest.

"Currently, there is no obligation under EU law, for asearch engine operator who grants a request for de-referencing made by a data subject... to carry out such ade-referencing on all the versions of its search engine,"the European Court of Justice (CJEU) said.

"However, EU law requires a search engine operatorto carry out such a de-referencing on the versions of itssearch engine corresponding to all the (EU) memberstates," it added. The case arose after France's privacywatchdog CNIL in 2016 fined Google 100,000 euros($109,790) for refusing to delist sensitive informationfrom internet search results globally upon request inwhat is called the "right to be forgotten." Google took itsfight to the French Council of State which subsequentlysought advice from the CJEU.

These included a satirical photomontage of a femalepolitician, an article referring to someone as a publicrelations officer of the Church of Scientology, theplacing under investigation of a male politician and theconviction of someone for sexual assaults againstminors.

Amazon’s new initiative: Bring access to Cortana,Alexa and other assistants from single device

Amazon.com Inc has launchedan initiative that would allowusers to access its Alexa,

Microsoft Corp’s Cortana andmultiple other voice-controlledvirtual assistant services from asingle device.

The move comes as competitionhas intensified among globaltechnology companies to dominatethe market for voice assistants, which are commonly housed insmart speakers and mobile devices.

The notable exclusions fromAmazon’s ‘Voice InteroperabilityInitiative’ are Alphabet Inc’s GoogleAssistant, Apple Inc’s Siri andSamsung Electronics Co’s Bixby.

Google was approached byAmazon but only over the weekend, giving it a very small time frame toevaluate the proposal, a sourcefamiliar with the matter said.

“We just heard about thisinitiative and would need to reviewthe details, but in general we’realways interested in participatingin efforts that have the broadsupport of the ecosystem anduphold strong privacy and security

practices,” a Google spokespersonsaid.

The initiative, which has beensupported by more than 30companies, also includesSalesforce.com’s Einstein.

Chip companies including IntelCorp, Qualcomm Inc, MediaTek Incand NXP Semiconductors NV willdevelop the related hardware,Amazon said.

Spotify, Tencent, Baidu, BMW,

Bose, Harman, Orange, Sonos, SonyAudio Group are also supportingthe partnership.

Microsoft and Amazon havecollaborated in the past. The twocompanies two years agoannounced that their voiceassistants will be able to talk to eachother, a rare move in itself as mostvirtual assistants are known to usedata from their own ecosystems andnot talk to one another.

ADB lowers India’s GDP growthforecast to 6.5%

NEW DELHI (TIP): The AsianDevelopment Bank (ADB) todaysharply lowered India’s growthforecast from 7.2% to 6.5% for thecurrent fiscal, though has itindicated that the country will growfaster than China.

The multi-lateral lending agencyin its Asian Development Outlook(ADO) Update for 2019 cut thegrowth projection for India, whichrecorded an over six-year lowgrowth of 5% in April-June quarterthis fiscal.

“India’s growth forecast for fiscalyear 2019 is lowered to 6.5% aftergrowth slowed markedly to 5% inthe first quarter, April-June. Abruptdeclines in manufacturing andinvestment reflect uncertaintyahead of General Election, subduedlending by banks and otherfinancial institutions, stress in therural economy, and a weakeningexternal outlook,” the agency said.

However, India is expected torebound to 7.2% growth in fiscal2021 and join most other sub-regional countries in performing ator near their ADO 2019 growthforecasts for next year, it added.

The Manila-headquarteredfunding agency had projected

India’s economy to expand at 7.2%in its ADO for 2019-20 releasedearlier in April this year and cut itdown to 7% in the supplement to theADO in July.

As regards China, it has projectedthat growth will slip from 6.6% lastyear to 6.2% in 2019, and 6% in 2020— below previous projections —with increased governmentspending and a strong housing

market partly offsetting the impactof the trade dispute with the US andsluggish manufacturinginvestment.

“In Hong Kong, China, recentpolitical tensions, spillover from thetrade conflict, and the globalelectronics downturn will slowgrowth in 2019 and 2020 well belowADO 2019 projections,” it saidfurther.

Trump also said he saw a path to peace withIran even as he denounced Iran for “bloodlust”,cooling other risk premiums built into oil prices.

Oil rallied last week following a cripplingattack on Saudi Arabia’s oil installations thathas disrupted supplies from the world’s topexporter. To meet its supply obligations to Saudirefineries overseas, Saudi Aramco is buying oilfrom other Middle East producers.

“Right now, the market is very concernedabout the demand side of the equation, but Iwould caution against being complacent aboutwhat’s happening in the Middle East,” saidHowie Lee, an OCBC economist.

SPICEJET PLANS TO BUY100 AIRBUS PLANES,WORTH $13 BILLION

India’s SpiceJet Ltd. is weighing an order for at least 100Airbus SE planes as Boeing Co. grapples with the falloutover its grounded 737 Max.

The budget carrier, a major global customer for the Max,may buy a “sizable” number of Airbus A321LR and XLR jets toaccommodate a planned expansion, SpiceJet Chairman AjaySingh said Tuesday. No decision has been made, he said, andthe airline would consider a competing midrange jetliner ifBoeing decides to build one.

Airbus has “pushed us hard since the day we started flyingBoeing aircraft, and of course with the current problems, they’ve pushed us harder,” Singh said in an interview atBloomberg’s headquarters in New York. “They have made us acommercial offer and we are evaluating it.”

The discussions with Airbus threaten Boeing with a high-profile defection at a time when the US planemaker isenmeshed in one of the biggest crises in its 103-year history.SpiceJet, India’s second-largest airline, has 13 Max jetsalready in its fleet and has committed to buy as many as 205 ofthe single-aisle workhorses as it expands capacity to handlethe nation’s fast-growing demand for air travel.

While Singh didn’t specify the exact size of a potentialtransaction, he said “any aircraft order that SpiceJet placeswould at least be 100 aircraft.” That would value the deal inexcess of $13 billion, based on 2018 list prices beforecustomary discounts for the A321neo.

Harmony and Peace : Modi’sMessage to the UNGA

Listing the achievements of his government, he saidthe Indian example will inspire many developingnations. He said the dreams for the realization of whichhis government is working are the dreams of the wholeworld.

He began with the initiative "Swachh Bharat" (CleanIndia) which he described as the biggest cleanlinessdrive of the world. Under the initiative, 110 milliontoilets have been made in less than 5 years, which, hesaid must be an inspiration to the whole world.Incidentally, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundationhonored Modi with Global Gatekeeper Award for his"Swachh Bharat" initiative two days before headdressed the UNGA.

The other achievements he listed included the healthinsurance scheme under which 500 million arebenefitted annually, the financial inclusion schemeunder which 370 million poor people have opened bankaccounts. These schemes give the poor allover the worlda new hope. Digital identification program, containingcorruption which saved the country $20 billion aresome other initiatives of his government which maywell be emulated by other nations. Of late, inspired bythe UN 's recommendation of end to single plastic use,India has launched an initiative in this respect.

From the past achievements of his government Modimoved on to some plans in the future. Waterconservation and water supply to 150 million homes inthe next 5 years is one of the priorities of hisgovernment . There are plans to build in far flung ruralareas 60, 000 miles of roads.

By 2022, when India will be celebrating 75 years ofIndependence, 200 million homes for the poor will havebeen built.

So much has been possible, Modi said because of thecooperation of all. Together we progress has been theprinciple his government followed. Mutual Trust, mutual cooperation and development.

India's successful initiatives may well encourageother nations to follow suit.

Turning to India's age-old culture , Modi said thatIndia has always believed in peace, not in conflicts. Hiscountry has taken initiatives for the benefit of thewhole world because India believes the whole world is afamily.

India has been a leading nation in dealing with theissue of global warming. In order to contain damagefrom natural disasters, India took the initiative ofsetting up "Coalition for Disaster ResilientInfrastructure" which will create an infrastructurewhich will be resilient to natural disasters.

Prime Minister Modi mentioned next theextraordinary contribution of Indian soldiers to UNPeacekeeping. He said the sacrifices made by Indiansoldiers are unparalleled.

Modi waned the international community of thethreats from terrorism. He called upon member nationsto come together to put down terrorism.

He said the 21st century modern technology isbringing about many changes in the spheres of sociallife, personal life, economy, security , connectivity andinternational relations, and added that under thecircumstances a divided world is in nobody's interest.Nor does the world have the option to stay confined tonational boundaries. "In this new era, we will have togive new strength and direction to multilateralism andto the United Nations", Modi said.

He reminded the world community of the message ofSwami Vivekanand who a hundred years ago, at theWorld Parliament of Religions in Chicago had said:"Harmony and Peace; Not Dissension". Modi said,"India's message to the world today is similar to Swami'Vivekanand's - Harmony and Peace."

In order to have theblessings of Maa Durga Shakti in humanlife, Hindus worship Maa Durga and allher feminine aspects of divinefemininity over nine days and ninenights.

The Navratri 2019 dates of the Ashwinmonth are from September 29 untilOctober 7. It is one of the festivalscelebrated across the length and breadthof India, though the celebrations in onepart of the country are quite differentthan the other. With various customs andtraditions, each region of India has itsunique way of celebrating the Navaratriby honouring the multiple forms ofMother Goddess with their rituals andceremonies.

Performing rituals of Navratri is themost significant way of experiencing theessence of this Hindu festival. In theauspicious and awe-inspiring occasion, divine love pervades through all devoteeswho emerge more courageous and wiserthrough the nine-day rigor. In the vein ofall vedic traditions, Navratri customshelp to inculcate spiritual habits. Hence, prayers, chants, 'bhajans' and reading ofimportant religious texts make up asignificant portion of this festival.Devotees pay obeisance to this femininedivine energy that is believed tomaintain the balance of the universe.

Navratri is one of the most anticipatedfestivals in India with social andspiritual connotations. Navratri Hindufestival is spread out over nineconsecutive days in the Chaitra andAshwin months to consecrate the divineaspects of Ma Shakti as Goddess Durga,Goddess Lakshmi and GoddessSaraswati. The festival is associated withtheir symbolic connotation as epitome ofcourage, wealth and skill respectively.

Broadly, on the first three days, devotees venerate Goddess Durga as sherepresents power in its divine form thatremoves negativity and proclivitytowards immoral behavior. She is,invoked as Kumari, Parvati and Kaliwhich are aspects of Ma Durga andrepresent her adolescence-to-maturitystage. During the next three days,Goddess Lakshmi blessings for materialand spiritual prosperity are sought withpuja and powerful mantra chantings.Over the next three days, GoddessSaraswati is invoked to seek blessings forerudition and skills in the arts. Thedevotee puts books and musicalinstruments near the deity to acquiretrue knowledge and wisdom to seehim/her through this life and beyond. The ninth day of 'Mahanavami' , theconcluding day of Navratri puja, isconsidered an auspicious day forconducting pujas such as 'Aparajita' pujaand 'Kanya Puja'. The tenth daycelebrates the momentous eventsassociated with Lord Rama as well as MaDurga, who killed the demon

'Mahisasura'.

Rituals of NavratriCustoms of Navratri which stand out

prominently in terms of strictobservance include the following:

On the very first day, barley or 'jowar'seeds are sown in a decorated clay potand by the tenth day, the tender shootsare distributed among the devotees. Aphotograph or an idol of the eight-armedGoddess seated on a lion, along with the'yantra' is installed.

'Kalash Sthapna' is done whichinvolves installing a water pot or 'kalash',sprinkled with holy water and filled withmango leaves and coconut.

The morning 'puja' is performed after abath, and the day-long fast is broken afterdoing the evening puja.

During the puja, 'shankh' is blown, fresh flowers, 'doob' or sacred grass,'paan' and fruits are offered to the deity, chapters from the sacred 'DurgaSaptshati' and 'Chandipath' are recited, followed by 'arti' and prasad distribution.

A very significant ritual is performing'Kanya Puja' on 'Ashtami' and 'Navami',which involves worshipping nine younggirls, in pre-puberty stage, representingthe nine forms of goddess Durga. Eachgirl is treated to a meal comprising puri, sweet bread, halwa, a sweet dish, made ofsemolina and Bengal gram curry. Afterwashing their feet, the devotees breaktheir fast.

Ayudha or Astra Puja is held on theeighth/ninth day. Tools, vehicles andequipments are worshipped on this day.

Among some communities, it is alsoconsidered an auspicious time to initiatelearning for children by invokingGoddess Saraswati. Hence, Lalita-pujaand Saraswati-puja is doneritualistically to start formal educationof children.

A Garba performance precedes 'aarti'conducted in honor of Maa Durga.

Fasting or 'vrat' from sunrise till

sunset is undertaken for night days.In the Navratri Hindu festival, the

devotee should observe abstinence andausterity.

On the eight day, a 'yagna' is performedwith offerings of ghee and til for mentaland spiritual cleansing.

In Gujarat, a garbh-deep or a lamp is litwithin an earthen pot with severalperforations representing the unison ofbody and soul.

Customs of NavratriSince all the nine days are dedicated to

different incarnations of Ma Durga, it iscustomary to wear colors that symbolizethe qualities of the deity. The first dayvenerates Shailputri Devi who embodiesaspects of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. On this day, red clothes are worn. Thesecond day is dedicated toBrahmacharini Devi who represents alife of abstinence. Wearing blue coloredclothes is considered auspicious on thisday. On the third day, ChandraghantaDevi, the bestower of glory and beauty, is

invoked. On the fourth day, KushmandaDevi is worshipped and yellow is thecolor to honor her. The fifth day is inhonor of Skandmata Devi. Grey is thecolor to be worn on the sixth day and isdedicated to Katyayani Devi, whileorange is the color for protectionsymbolized by Kalratri Devi on theseventh day. BUMRAH OUT OF SA TESTSWITH STRESS FRACTURE INBACK, UMESH CALLED

NEW DELHI (TIP): Jasprit Bumrah, India’s toppace bowler across formats for the last two years, hasbeen ruled out of the three-Test series against SouthAfrica due to a stress fracture in his lower back.

Bumrah has been replaced in the Indian squad bypaceman Umesh Yadav. The Test series against SouthAfrica begins in Visakhapatnam on October 2.

The injury could force Bumrah out of next month’sT20I and Test series against Bangladesh as well.Since making his Test debut against South Africa inJanuary 2018, Bumrah has picked up 62 wickets in 12Tests at an average of 19.24. He is yet to play a Testseries in India, but he did very well on the tours ofSouth Africa, England, Australia and the West Indiesover the last 21 months.

Bumrah’s injury is a big setback to India and awarning sign as well, because it raises questionsasked about managing his workload in the light ofhis slingy, unconventional bowling action. Bumrahhas bowled a staggering 724.3 overs in internationalcricket since January 1, 2018.

“The injury was detected during a routineradiological screening. He will now undergorehabilitation at NCA and will be monitored by theBCCI Medical Team. The All-India Senior SelectionCommittee has named Umesh Yadav as Bumrah’sreplacement,” the Indian cricket board (BCCI) saidin a media statement.

ROHIT’S OPENING GAMBITVIZIANAGARAM (TIP): Rohit Sharma will

begin a last-ditch effort to save his start-stop Testcareer with a trial run in the unfamiliar opener’sslot when he leads the Board President’s XI in athree-day warm-up game against South Africa.

The national selection committee and the teammanagement have decided to promote Rohit as anopener due to his attractive strokeplay. India’s nextfive Tests — three against South Africa at home andtwo against New Zealand away early next year —could make or break the 32-year-old’s Test career. Hewill open with Mayank Agarwal for the BoardPresident’s XI, and the two will look to strike anunderstanding before the first Test, which begins inVisakhapatnam on October 2.

From the Indian point of view, the second playerto watch with interest in the game is fast bowlerUmesh Yadav, who has been drafted into the Testside as the replacement of the injured JaspritBumrah. Yadav, who played the last of his 41 Testsin late 2018, will be keen to rattle the likes of Faf duPlessis and Aiden Markram in order to make astatement.
