Anonymous 4 revisit their favorite era in repertoire that illuminates medieval women’s affi nity for the most complex polyphony of their time. Spanning the entire 13th century — from virtuosic motets and conductus to heartfelt laments and sacred songs — the remarkable Las Huelgas manuscript was compiled for a convent of aristocratic Castilian women who (in spite of a rule forbidding Cistercian nuns from singing polyphony) sang the most beautiful, advanced and demanding music from all across Gothic-era Europe.

Other September highlights on harmonia mundi include a recital of nineteenth and twentieth century English songs with countertenor Bejun Mehta accompanied by Julius Drake (p.3), Manuel de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain (p.4) with pianist Javier Perianes and Paul Hillier’s Christmas Story (p.6). New on Hyperion, Alina Ibragimova rejoins Cedric Tiberghien for a disc of violin sonatas by Ravel and Lekeu (p.15), Martin Roscoe is featured on the latest Romantic Piano Concerto disc with works by Somervell and Cowen (p.17) and The Binchois Consort sings Music for Henry V and the House of Lancaster (p.19). “ To hear this repertoire played with such intellect and fi nesse on the same kind of instrument on which these works were originally performed, is to hear something really special, whether in the sparkling outer movements of sonatas or more tender and refl ective music.”

IMPORTDown by the Salley Gardens offers a vivid and varied cross-section of English song, ranging from the Edwardian aesthetic of Quilter and early Vaughan Williams to the intensely expressive style of Howells and Finzi. The Purcell realizations by Britten and Tippett, meanwhile, are products of two great 20th-century composers engaging with their musical heritage. In all these different styles, Bejun Mehta shows the same verbal and vocal mastery that won such acclaim for his debut Handel recital on harmonia mundi.

IMPORT“I never thought of becoming a virtuoso. Virtuosity, with its concert tours, has always repelled me,” Manuel de Falla told a journalist in 1915, by which time he had virtually turned his back on composition for solo piano. He did occasionally return to the genre, but his complete solo works for piano can be contained on a single CD, along with the famous Nights in the Gardens of Spain. The music proclaims its indebtedness to other composers, yet the music is still highly personal. To produce this exciting new recording, Javier Perianes and Josep Pons carefully studied the composer’s original manuscripts held in the Archivo Manuel de Falla in Granada.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDOne of the seminal American musical traditions, the spiritual is dramatic, powerful and profoundly beautiful — the bedrock for much of the American music that was to follow. On their new album Sing Freedom!, Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare explore the genre’s wide range of expression and its eloquence in speaking to universal aspects of the human condition.

“You would have to search long and hard to find a choral group which sings with such precision and poise... the choral blend is flawless...a rich and luxuriant sound.”

IMPORTMichael Hurd’s 1971 chamber opera The Widow of Ephesus was commissioned by the Stroud Festival. The story is taken from an episode in the Satyricon of Gaius Petronius — director of court entertainment under the Emperor Nero. A masterpiece of black humor, the story has attracted the attention of numerous composers. Mr Owen’s Great Endeavour is one of several cantatas Hurd wrote for school performance. The work was fi rst performed at New Lanark Mills in April 1991. This new recording features George Vass leading The City of Canterbury Chamber Choir, Orchestra Nova and narrator Michael Bundy.

IMPORTJohn Joubert is a British composer of South African descent. His Symphony No.2 was inspired by Alan Paton’s novel Cry the Beloved Country, written in memory of those killed in the Sharpeville massacre of March 1960. William Alwyn’s opera The Fairy Fiddler was his fi rst attempt at a stage work, but was never completed. Only the “Prelude” and “Derrybeg Fair” sequence exist in fi nal form. English composer Carlo Martelli is best known for his horror fi lm scores of the 1960s. Here we fi nd his majestic Symphony, written when he was a 19-year-old student at the Royal College of Music. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Martin Yates gives evocative, rousing performances of each of these works.

IMPORTThis fascinating new Dutton recording features the fi rst recordings of Jane Austen’s three favorite songs — and a dozen more premières, including the fi rst chance to hear the only piece of music specifi cally mentioned in the novels. The piano featured on these recordings is an 1817 Broadwood grand signed by the composer J.B. Cramer. Broadwood is the only make of piano, and Cramer the only composer, mentioned by Jane Austen in Emma (1815). The pieces recorded here are drawn from seventeen music albums that belonged to Jane Austen and her female relations. Performers include soprano Amanda Pitt, baritone John Lofthouse and pianist David Owen Norris.

IMPORTThis disc presents a survey of music by Finnish composer Toivo Kuula, a pupil of Sibelius. Best-known for his songs and choral music, Kuula’s arresting orchestral music draws heavily on folk infl uences and constitutes some of the most striking Finnish music of its time. Renowned soprano Susan Gritton and the BBC Concert Orchestra under the inspired baton of Martyn Brabbins give spellbinding accounts of this gloriously colorful repertoire.

IMPORTFlorent Schmitt’s output includes some of the most impressive and infl uential orchestral music of the fi rst two decades of the twentieth century. Not surprisingly, these works are equally gorgeous in their piano versions. Pianists Leslie De’Ath and Anya Alexeyev have recorded a ripe selection for this set, all but two of which are world premiere recordings in these versions. This enjoyable traversal of Schmitt’s piano music is presented here in immaculate, heartfelt performances.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDGloriae Dei Cantores presents The Chants of Angels, a new super-audio CD collection of glorious sacred melodies focused on these heavenly guardians, guides and friends. Using the ancient melodies and texts of the early Christian church, each Gregorian chant depicts a new aspect or story about angels. For those who are new to Gregorian chant and for seasoned scholars, The Chants of Angels allows listeners to simply close their eyes and be surrounded by these songs of prayer and comfort. Gloriae Dei Cantores Schola’s “expert renditions of Gregorian chant” (New York Times) are the result of years of study with the late Dr. Mary Berry CBE of the Schola Gregoriana (Cambridge, England) and the Monks of St. Peter’s Abbey, Solesmes, France, as well as daily practice of Gregorian chant in worship.

Helicon Records’ new ‘Heritage Series’ presents historic recordings of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and features some of the fi nest conductors to have led the orchestra since its inception. Paul Paray was Musical Director of the IPO from 1948 to 1951 and returned frequently thereafter as guest conductor. Paray’s disc of Schumann symphonies dates from the mid 1970s. The great Pierre Monteux was a favorite of the musicians. This disc from 1964 features Beethoven’s fourth symphony, Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Ravel’s second suite from Daphnis and Chloé. Antal Doráti rose from being the youngest ever conductor of the Royal Opera House in Budapest to being appointed “Conductor Laureate for Life” of three orchestras. This disc from 1963 features Mahler’s sixth symphony. All three Helicon recordings are carefully remastered and feature high-quality mono sound.

IMPORTMaurice Ravel’s works for violin and piano have established a central place in the core recital repertoire. These diverse works acknowledge the infl uences of a range of musical styles from jazz to Impressionism and fuse the tonal colors of Debussy with the lyricism of Franck. The posthumously published one-movement Sonata, written by Ravel as a student, is a lyrical precursor to the composer’s stunning Violin Sonata in G major with its unique character and adoption of the ‘blues’ idiom. The spontaneity, tonal colors and exotic soundscapes in Ravel’s violin music call for immense skill in interpretation, and passages in the frenzied Tzigane test the limits of the performers’ virtuosity. Violinist Alina Ibragimova rises to these challenges with extraordinary verve. She is accompanied by pianist Cédric Tiberghien, who gives elegant and fl awless performances and relishes Ravel’s iridescent piano parts.

IMPORTHoward Shelley’s survey of the piano sonatas of Clementi has been acclaimed not only as a set of benchmark performances, but also as a rediscovery of a composer who was uniquely important in his lifetime. This set of Capriccios and Variations is something of a footnote to the series. These works demonstrate Clementi’s lighter and more whimsical side, with many fantastical virtuoso fl ourishes of an improvisatory feel. Dramatic, radically experimental, often determinedly chromatic, these works show the aging composer still at work in the forefront of the most modern keyboard style.

IMPORTThe Goldberg Variations stand as one of the greatest keyboard works ever written. The work’s universal musical language and distinct voicing has made it a popular subject for arrangement. Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s trio arrangement was made in 1985 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Bach’s birth. It is dedicated to the memory of Glenn Gould, whose celebrated 1955 Columbia recording of the work introduced a whole generation of listeners to this extraordinary music. Sitkovetsky’s arrangement produces fascinating and delightful results, especially in this vigorous and sensitive performance from the Leopold String Trio.

IMPORTHyperion presents another entertaining addition to the renowned Romantic Piano Concerto series catalogue, this time with three world première recordings featuring the complete works for piano and orchestra by Sir Frederic Hymen Cowen and Sir Arthur Somervell. In his day, Cowen was a hugely successful contemporary of Stanford and Parry. His Concertstück was written in 1897 for Paderewski, who gave the premiere to much acclaim. Somervell is best known for his songs and he wrote comparatively little orchestral music. His symphonic variations, entitled Normandy, were premiered in 1913 by the great scholar and pianist Donald Francis Tovey who did much to champion them. The “Highland” concerto is a late work written for, and premiered by, the Scottish pianist Jessie Munro. It is an uncomplicated and enjoyable romp based on Scottish-sounding themes, which are nevertheless original Somervell. As usual, Martin Roscoe and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra are on scintillating form throughout.

“Roscoe is a pianist who both thinks and offers full-blooded playing of breadth and depth.”

IMPORTThis latest addition to Christopher Herrick’s acclaimed Buxtehude series is performed on the magnifi cent Organ of Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge. Everything heard on this disc was composed over three hundred years ago when printed music was a rarity and organists were required to be highly profi cient in the art of improvisation. Certainly none of Buxtehude’s organ works was printed in his lifetime, and it was not until 1875 that they fi rst became available. Herrick’s communication is exceptional in these stimulating performances and his inspired interpretations are so vivid that they appear improvisatory in their approach.

Throughout the six contrasting works, the composer employs compositional techniques that were to shape and defi ne the genre. We witness a deviation in style from the lightness and wit of his previous quartets to a mood of emotional intensity and darker musical imagery. They are exquisite masterpieces and demonstrate a composer at the height of creative maturity. They display an astonishing consistency of excellence and a huge variety of form and style. The London Haydn Quartet is the ideal advocate for these works and gives elegant, radiant and exhilaratingly assured performances.

IMPORTThe Binchois Consort p r e s e n t s a d i s c t h a t demonstrates the beauty and grandeur of the music performed daily in princely chapels of fi fteenth-century England. It illustrates the sheer variety of types of singing, some of it virtuosic in its brilliance. Specifi cally it offers sacred ceremonial pieces written either for Henry V or to invoke the saintly patron of the House of Lancaster, John of Bridlington. Scholarly notes by Philip Weller place this music fi rmly in its historical context, and the Binchois performances represent the highest standard of early music singing of the present day. Every nuance is considered and each phrase is relished in this immaculately polished disc.

“The Binchois Consort have established themselves as one of the very finest ensembles in the field.”

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe fi nal release in Valery Gergiev’s acclaimed Mahler cycle features the composer’s Symphony No.9, recorded at the Barbican in March 2011. Mahler wrote his ninth symphony during a time of great personal suffering and heartache. This is refl ected in the music, at times manic and fi erce, at others delicate and serene, as it explores many emotions and ultimately concludes with the heart-stopping coda of the Adagio, seemingly conveying the composer’s acceptance of his own mortality.

The Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpani has turned out to be one of Glass’s most frequently performed concert works. Haas worked closely with Josh Quillen and NYU Steel to create the arrangements and recording of Philip Glass’ piano Etudes on steel drums. The result is a fantastic re-imagining of Glass’ music, giving new light to the color and structure of this very popular repertoire.

DOMESTICPhilip Glass’ 2001 Concerto No.1 for Cello and Orchestra has a unique story. Following the terror attacks in New York in September 2001, Glass was discouraged from traveling in the immediate aftermath and consequently missed the world première of the work in Beijing in October with cellist Julian Lloyd Webber. It was not until 2007 that Glass had the chance to hear the work live in the concert hall when Wendy Sutter performed the US première in California. Glass encouraged Sutter to perform the work extensively and this recording was made during a tour with the Orchestra of the Americas.

IMPORTOnyx presents the fi rst complete CD cycle of Martinu’s symphonies, performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Jirí Belohlávek. These works, which are a major contribution to 20th century symphonic literature, are still undervalued. Spanning the years surrounding the Second World War, they capture the turmoil, hopes and fears of the composer and his homeland — a homeland that suffered unimaginable cruelties under the Nazis. At the end of the war, Martinu was the only major Czech composer of his generation to have survived. Throughout these sometimes-turbulent works, the irrepressible Czech spirit survives.

IMPORTWillem Pijper and Rudolf Escher are two major fi gures in 20th-century Dutch music. Pijper was a symphonist, composer of operas and a noted writer on music. The music of Escher, a student of Pijper, is infl uenced by Debussy, Schoenberg and Ravel. Ton de Leeuw and Alexander Voormolen are little-known outside of Holland. This is an important release of rarely heard music by the most infl uential Dutch composers of the last century, performed with passion and virtuosity by Philippe Graffi n and Jelger Blanken.

IMPORTSpanish Baroque composer Domènec Terradellas was born in Barcelona but lived more than half his life in Italy. He possessed a great aptitude to create colorful environments and contrasts in his operas, many of them based upon stories from ancient Egypt and Persia. Following on RCOC’s première recording of the composer’s Artaserse, Juan Bautista Otero and his highly accomplished singers and musicians turn to another unpublished work of Terradellas, Sesostris. IMPORTAmerican composer Conlon Nancarrow is best known for the ground-breaking compositions he wrote for player piano. Nancarrow was one of the fi rst composers to use musical instruments as mechanical machines, making them play far beyond human performance ability. His central works in this new genre were the Studies for Player Piano, written between 1948 and 1992. Nancarrow’s ‘live’ instrumental compositions can be classifi ed in three groups, piano, chamber and orchestral. Each of those genres is represented on this new disc. The composer’s late creative period is characterized by transcriptions of both his own works and works by other composers. Paul Usher’s Nancarrow Concerto is a shining example of the ongoing creative development of Nancarrow’s music.

IMPORTFile in: Cajun & ZydecoC.J. Chenier was literally born into the musical tradition of southwest Louisiana and Texas Zydeco, a chugging, accordion-led blend of French Creole and Af r i can-der ived in f luences . Born the son of great Zydeco king Clifton Chenier, the first GRAMMY® Award winning musician in the genre, the young Chenier was totally immersed in R&B, funk and jazz from childhood. Despite his family ties, or maybe because of them, Chenier was not terribly interested in his father’s music as a teenager and he spent his college years exploring his own musical style. Chenier’s interest in the music of his ancestors grew and after graduating from college, he joined his father’s legendary Red Hot Louisiana Band. Chenier assumed leadership of the band following his father’s death in 1987. While he continued to develop his personal accordion style, Chenier also gradually began grafting on infl uences from his boyhood. He explains, “I play it the way I play it. All my father really told me was to do the best I could do with my own style.”

On Just One Of Those Things, Cole is backed by a top fl ight big band that downright sizzles

in stellar arrangements by the distinctive Billy May. The album is among its era’s fi nest recordings of popular music. When Nat King Cole and Nelson Riddle undertook an album dedicated to the music of W.C. Handy, the results were at once a worthy tribute and transformative. DOMESTIC SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: JazzPeckin’ Time, badged as a Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan joint effort, is really a Hank Mobley album. All the compositions (except for the Weil/Nash standard “Speak Low”) are Mobley originals. Morgan’s playing lacks none of his characteristic fi re and clarity. However, recognizing Mobley as the main creative force here is yet another necessary step in his ongoing re-evaluation. The rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Charlie Persip is stellar and delivers dynamic hard bop. Mobley plays with perhaps the greatest assurance of any point of his career, with long, beautifully crafted solos that match Morgan’s in their strength and inventiveness.

DOMESTIC SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: JazzAlready the most formidable new trumpeter in jazz in 1962, Freddie Hubbard came into his own as a composer with this album. Hub-Tones is packed with great originals that range from the complex, ferocious title track swinger to his poignant “Lament For Booker,” written for the later Booker Little. James Spaulding, Herbie Hancock, Reggie Workman and Clifford Jarvis are all at their peak, bringing the brilliant music to life with artistry and feeling.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: JazzLee Morgan’s spectacular 1964 album The Sidewinder is a true jazz classic. The title track was one of the defi ning recordings of the soul jazz genre and quickly became a popular standard. The album was a huge seller and highly infl uential — many subsequent Lee Morgan albums (and other Blue Note discs) would emulate this album’s format by following a long, funky opening blues with a handful of conventional hard bop tunes. The album features tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, drummer Billy Higgins and double bassist Bob Cranshaw, who would soon switch to electric bass and begin a decades-long association with Sonny Rollins. All of the compositions were written by Morgan, and all but the Cole Porter-like “Hocus Pocus” are heavily blues-based.

IMPORTFile in: JazzThe original Quintette du Hot Club de France was founded in France in 1934 by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli. One of the earliest and most signifi cant jazz groups in Europe, the Quintette was described by critic Thom Jurek as “one of the most original bands in the history of recorded jazz.” Babik Reinhardt, Django’s son, revived the group as the New Quintette du Hot Club de France and in 1998, made this album in partnership with guitarists Romane and Philippe “Doudou” Cuillerier, violinist Florin Niculescu and bassist Gilles Naturel. Together, they also brought a resolutely modern approach to an honored tradition and stamped the pages of contemporary jazz with the heritage of the Master.

IMPORTFile in: World / AfricaOn Luso Noir, eleven major voices from Angola, Cape Verde and Mozambique sing praises to various forms of the Saudade, a poignant musical expression of world-weariness inherited from the Portuguese conquistadors. Sadness, longing, gentle melancholy — none of these translations can quite capture the full depth of Saudade’s emotional pull. The Portuguese empire ruled its African colonies for 500 years, dissolving in 1975 after a series of bloody revolutions. The Saudade remained, not only as a musical genre but also as an approach to life, a unifying cultural legacy that has not only survived, but thrived. The post-independence, African perspective is presented musically by the singers on this compilation.
