Published in June 1823 and dedicated to Antonie Brentano, Beethoven’s Op.120 Variations were described by Diabelli himself as, “a great and important masterpiece, worthy to be ranked with the imperishable creations of the old Classics [and to occupy] a place beside Sebastian Bach’s famous masterpieces of the same type.” And, indeed, like the immortal Cantor of Leipzig, Beethoven revolutionized the genre.

IMPORT • REISSUE: Replaces HMC 992039 (794881935628) Deleted March 2011If one believes an anecdote from the early 1790s, it was with his oratorio Die Schöpfung (The Creation) that Haydn, in the autumn of his years, hoped to perpetuate his fame for posterity — even though he was already the most celebrated composer in Europe. Not surprisingly, the work’s fi rst public performance in 1799 was a huge triumph. A sequel to his highly acclaimed recording of Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons), this set fi nds René Jacobs and his handpicked cast of soloists on top form. Previously released in a limited edition package with a bonus DVD, Jacobs’ Creation is a defi nitive performance that is not to be missed.

IMPORTOn Rose of Sharon, Joel Frederiksen and the Ensemble Phoenix present a program of rarely heard American vocal music from the 18th and 19th centuries. The release takes its name from a passage in the Song of Solomon that was set by William Billings in his 1778 book “The Singing Master’s Assistant.” Billings is widely considered the father of American choral music. In his day, singing schools spread all over New England and played an important role in the development of an independent music tradition in America. With songs by the Quakers, Shakers and the Moravian Brethren as well as selections from the collections “The Sacred Harp” and “Southern Harmony,” the music on Rose of Sharon spans the years between the Declaration of Independence to the end of the Civil War — a crucial period in the political and cultural birth of a new nation.

IMPORTZiryâb, a Persian musician at the 9th Century court of Abd al-Rahman II in Cordoba, is sometimes credited with the invention of Andalusian Classical music. By the 11th century, Moorish Spain and Portugal had also become a center for the manufacture of instruments. Both their music and instruments were exported to Provence, thus infl uencing French troubadours and trouvères and eventually reaching the rest of Europe. The Western lute, rebec, guitar and tympani derive from the Arabic oud, rabab, qithara and naqareh. On this fascinating disc, Ensemble Beatus performs the repertoire of the Troubadours using ornamentation and improvisation styles derived from the Arabic traditions that formed the style’s roots.

IMPORTMezzo-soprano Isabelle Druet was voted ‘Vocal Discovery of the Year’ at France’s Victoires de la Musique Classique awards in 2010 and won second prize at the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Competition in 2008. For her fi rst recital disc, Druet has chosen a program of French mélodies with nocturnal themes. The anchor of the collection is Berlioz’s Nuits d’été, performed in its original version for voice and piano. Druet and her accompanist Johanne Ralambondrainy complete the program with works by Fauré, Hahn, Halphen, Massenet & Poulenc. In an unusual twist, Druet asked actor Christian Pageault to join her as narrator, reciting some sections of the poems.

IMPORTThis world première recording is the fruit of lengthy musicological research by Christophe Rousset. Together with a cast of great talent and breathtaking individual performances from Cyril Auvity and Céline Scheen, Rousset invites us to rediscover Jean-Baptiste Lully’s opera Bellérophon. First performed on January 31, 1679, it ran for nine months at the Palais Royal. It is not surprising that the work immediately endeared itself to the king. It features an adaptation of a mythical story that describes a hero who practices restraint and moderation toward the foes he vanquishes — a none-too-subtle reference to the Sun King’s recent victories over the Dutch, the Spanish and the Holy Roman Emperor. The set features deluxe, CD-Book packaging and a full libretto with English and German translations.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD • IMPORTTo illustrate the progressiveness of Brahms’ harmonic style, Arnold Schönberg often cited his C minor String Quartet, Op.51. Brahms’ innovative variation technique and phrase structure were clearly among the key infl uences on Schönberg’s sextet Verklärte Nacht, an intensely emotional work inspired by a Richard Dehmel poem that caused great controversy at the time because of the sexual nature of its subject matter. The Amsterdam Sinfonietta performs Schönberg’s arrangement of the work for string orchestra, paired with an arrangement of Brahms’ Op.51 by Marijn van Prooijen.

IMPORTInterestingly, Smetana and Sibelius, both renowned for their skillful dealing with symphonic forces, turned to the intimacy of the string quartet form at specifi c points of crisis in their lives. Smetana’s fi rst quartet, subtitled ‘From my life,’ musically chronicles his youth, loves and vocation, culminating with the onset of his deafness. The turbulent second quartet serves as a sequel. The musical language is adventurous and unusual, speaking movingly of the composer’s loss of his hearing. Voces intimae is an intense precursor to Sibelius’ tormented fourth symphony, written at a time of profound depression. On this CD, BBC Music Magazine award winners the Dante Quartet are featured in their third recording for Hyperion.

IMPORTThis recording is a particularly signifi cant addition to the Hyperion catalogue. Not only is Frank Martin’s wonderful three-act opera Der Sturm the fi rst full-length live opera recording on the label, it is also a rarely staged important twentieth century masterpiece. Based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, this groundbreaking performance was given by the impressive Netherlands Radio Philharmonic under the baton of Thierry Fischer. The orchestra unfailingly matches the energy and passion of the recording’s impressive cast. Written towards the end of his life and taking almost three years to complete, Der Sturm emerges as one of Martin’s most inventive works. This set offers a rare opportunity to hear the full opera in its original language and is not to be missed.

IMPORTAfter sixteen years of exceptional achievement and vast critical acclaim, the career paths of the

members of The Florestan Trio are diverging. Sadly, the trio will disband at the end of this year and this disc marks the end of their studio career. For their fi nal recording, the trio performs an all-Shostakovich program comprising the two piano trios and the Seven Romances on Poems of Alexander Blok, for which they are joined by soprano Susan Gritton. Written in 1923, the fi rst trio was an astonishing achievement for a seventeen-year-old student. The second, one of the composer’s greatest masterpieces, was premiered some twenty years later. The romances were the response to a request by Mstislav Rostropovich for repertoire he and his wife could perform together. As always, The Florestan Trio displays the impeccable interpretative judgment and musicianship that have been the hallmark of their many recordings for Hyperion.

IMPORTThis month, Gramophone a w a r d n o m i n e e s Cinquecento add another glorious recording to their Hyperion discography. The group, comprised of six professional singers from fi ve European countries, is rapidly becoming one of today’s most admired early music ensembles. Their profound collective and individual musicianship, mellifl uous phrasing, perfect intonation and commitment to their chosen repertoire are clearly apparent in this gem of a disc. Here, the group uncovers the complete surviving works of Philipp Schoendorff. Schoendorff, originally a pupil of the illustrious Philippe de Monte, was a successful choirmaster at the Prague court of the Emperor Rudolf II. Also included are a Magnifi cat by his teacher de Monte and the two motets on which his pupil based his masses. No fan of Renaissance polyphony should overlook this outstanding recording.

IMPORTIn his lifetime, the German composer Carl Loewe was often referred to as the ‘Schubert of North Germany.’ He is frequently credited with developing the romantic ballad into a powerful art form and his prolifi c output of ballads and songs amounts to some four hundred works. Loewe’s treatment of long narrative poems in a clever and powerful mixture of dramatic and lyrical styles has been a template for many subsequent composers and many of the ballads on this disc are masterpieces of their genre. Performed here by Austrian baritone Florian Boesch in his Hyperion debut, these refi ned performances make it clear why Boesch has been labeled as ‘one of the fi nest interpreters of Lieder of his generation.’ Loewe’s daring and imaginative accompaniments are played here by the incomparable Roger Vignoles.

IMPORTThe new French period instrument ensemble Les Traversées Baroques has a name that evokes voyages and discoveries. Led here by conductor Etienne Meyer, the group presents a selection of the music of Marcin Mielczewski, a 17th-century Polish composer whose scores have lain neglected in the archives of central Europe. His music, at once sensuous and sparkling (and often reminiscent of Monteverdi) rewards exploration. Although Mielczewski was one of the prominent musical fi gures of Poland in the fi rst half of the 17th century, we know very little about him. His contemporaries considered him a fi rst-rate composer and his output was both broad and extensive, but only two of his works were printed. A curious fact is that one of his works contains the fi rst instance of a mazurka in art music.

IMPORTA major 18th-century genre, brought to the peak of perfection by Mozart, the concerto was obliged to fi nd new solutions in the Romantic era. Schumann, a celebrated critic married to a great pianist, and Liszt, the international virtuoso, conceived some of the most innovative examples of the period. On this CD, pianist Etsuko Hirosé plays both of Schumann’s works for piano and orchestra and Liszt’s second concerto. Hirosé has won numerous awards including the Moscow Chopin Competition in 1992, the Viotti International Competition in Italy in 1995, the Munich International Competition and the International Martha Argerich Competition in Buenos Aires in 1997.

IMPORTA new recording from Ricercar Consort is always special and this one is no exception. The enterprising Mirare label presents the group’s powerful new recording of J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion. Although not as popular as the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John is equally rich with the invention and beautiful melodies that Bach is famous for. The soloists here are on top form and their truly wondrous performance will surely elicit raves from critics. Last year’s Bach Magnifi cat with similar forces received excellent reviews including a Gramophone Editor’s Choice and a BBC CD Review disc of the week.

IMPORTAccording to Camille Saint-Saëns, Charles Gounod ought to be better known for his church music than for his operas. This gives some idea of the unprecedented quality of his sacred works, to which he devoted not only his unwavering faith but also the highest degree of his musical skill. Gounod’s Requiem in particular foreshadows Fauré, Durufl é and Poulenc and constitutes one of the masterpieces of the genre. On this new disc from Mirare, Michel Corboz and the Ensemble Vocal et Instrumentale de Lausanne offer insightful and reverential performances of both the Requiem and the Messe Chorale.

IMPORTThis program presents the provocative (yet logical) juxtaposition of two musical worlds and two Viennese Schools. The fi rst is represented by Berg’s Kammerkonzert, a key work of the twentieth-century, the second through modern arrangements from Schoenberg and Webern of Strauss’s Zwei Walzer, one of the greatest successes of Romantic Vienna. Performed here by Orchestre Poitou-Charentes conducted by Jean-François Heisser, this disc features soloists Marie-Josèphe Jude on piano and François-Marie Drieux on violin.

Facing Goya is a taut thriller that follows one woman’s passionate search for the 18th Century Spanish artist Goya’s missing skull. Her journey takes us into the dangerous world of racial stereotyping, gene therapy, cloning and humankind’s follies as seen through Goya’s paintings, etchings and captions. The idea for the opera arose from Nyman’s fascination with the insidious study of craniometry that developed in the 1870s. Goya was regarded as one of the greatest painters of his time. Buried in Bordeaux, legend has it that he asked friends to ensure his head was removed prior to burial to prevent the early craniometrists and researchers of eugenics from getting hold of his brain. Facing Goya asks the question, “If Goya’s skull was found, and if indeed, Goya was cloned, what would happen?”

IMPORTSchubert’s late masterpiece, the 15th and final String Quartet, was composed in 1826. Although its first movement was performed at a Vienna Musikverein concert devoted to his music, he could not fi nd anyone to publish it. It displays an almost Beethovenian profundity, and is a dramatic departure from the two previous song-based quartets that had proved popular. The writing is assured and the harmonies audacious. It is a dark, rather introverted work, full of passionate outbursts and drama. Berg’s Quartet Op.3 was premiered in 1911 towards the end of his studies with Schoenberg. It was badly received and baffl ed listeners and performers alike. Like the Schubert G major, it displays daring harmonies and a remarkable technical assurance. This is the Kuss Quartet’s debut on Onyx.

IMPORTFollowing their widely praised recording of Schumann violin sonatas, Ilya Gringolts and Peter Laul present Schumann’s three piano trios. Written over a short four-year period, the fi rst two were composed just a few months apart in 1847. The fi rst is often regarded as the strongest work of the three, and although it was conceived as a pair with the second, they differ markedly in tone. The fi rst has a much darker, and more brooding quality in comparison to the sunnier second. Schumann’s third and fi nal piano trio was written in 1851, soon after the composer and his family had moved to Dusseldorf. It was not a happy period, as Schumann was beginning to experience symptoms of the mental decline that would lead to his committal to a mental hospital in 1854, and his eventual death two years later.

From the sounds outside his bedroom window — a kind of sonic goulash of military marches, ethnic dance bands, church bells and nature itself — Gustav Mahler created an entire universe of emotion in music. In an astonishingly productive twenty-fi ve years, he fashioned ten symphonies and 45 songs of cosmic scale, great beauty and jarring emotional twists and turns. And he did it all in the brief moments he could spare from his day job as one of Europe’s preeminent conductors. On Gustav Mahler: Origins and Legacy, the latest release in the PBS Keeping Score series, Michael Tilson Thomas returns to the provincial Austro-Hungarian city of Mahler’s childhood and bears witness to his grand achievements, great sorrows and daring musical explorations into the depths of the human soul. Join MTT and the San Francisco Symphony as they trace Mahler’s rise as a young conductor, his career-crowning appointments in Vienna and New York, his turbulent marriage and the sudden, tragic death of his daughter — and show how his stormy inner life inspired new and ever-more heartbreaking heights of creativity. SFS Media’s two-disc set includes the documentary accompanied by a second disc with concert performances by the San Francisco Symphony including the fi rst symphony, selected movements of the fi fth, seventh and ninth symphonies and the complete Songs of a Wayfarer with baritone Thomas Hampson.

IMPORTWergo presents fi rst recordings of chamber music by the acclaimed Israeli composer Chaya Czernowin. Shifting Gravity is a collection of works that combines the three sections of Anea Crystal with the compositions Sheva and Sahaf. The second part of the CD consists of the cycle Winter Songs III for 10 instrumentalists and electronics. Wergo’s recording shows a different side of Czernowin, who, up to now, has been appreciated mainly for her stage works, in particular for the music theatre play Pnima ... Ins Innere or her adaptation of Mozart’s Zaïde / Adama. The instrumental works heard here were all created after the music-theatre plays, and focus on metaphysical themes of paralysis, adherence and proliferation.

The Penguin Cafe Orchestra is arguably the ultimate word of mouth group. But those who manage to stumble upon their richly melodic and utterly uplifting music invariably respond by asking, “where has this music been all my life?” quickly followed by, “which album should I buy fi rst?” This month, three completely remastered gems from the Penguin Cafe Orchestra’s discography make a welcome return to the active catalog and a new lineup of the group, Penguin Cafe, makes its debut. Union Cafe is a sprawling, diverse album that could be the Penguins’ ‘White Album.’ Concert Program includes most of the group’s best-known pieces. It was conceived as a ‘live’ album that would be recorded in a studio — a concert without an audience. Simon Jeffes, the leader of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, was an English classically trained guitarist, composer and arranger. Most of the pieces on his solo album Piano Music are previously unreleased material found on tapes after his untimely death in December 1997. The other fourteen pieces were played and recorded by Jeffes at various times and places.

Introducing Penguin Cafe — a new band for a new century

A ma¬ er of life...Penguin Cafe

Penguin Cafe • DPC 101

File in: Pop / RockThirteen years after Simon Jeffes’ death, his son, Arthur, has started playing his music again. Performing under the name Penguin Cafe, the younger Jeffes — along with a new group of musicians — is re-visiting his father’s music and starting a new chapter in the story of this unique and strange creative world. Their sound is at once familiar and new, combining acoustic power and a beguiling, feisty charm. The Penguin Cafe’s fi rst year, 2009, saw them playing the Acoustic stage at Glastonbury, the main stages at Big Chill and Bestival among many other adventures. In 2010, one major highlight was playing at the Albert Hall at their own BBC Late Night Prom. Over these fi rst two years, Arthur has been writing new material to compliment and respond to the old. A love-letter to the original music, A Matter Of Life... is the result of this endeavor and is one of the most startling, beautiful and extraordinary records of the year.

“Penguin Cafe prove how well his music has survived in the new century.”

exposing twelve more of the Fab Four’s works to a fi restorm of modern styles. Classic songs collide with the worlds of drum ‘n’ bass, trip hop, alternative rock and contemporary classical music to form a 21st century forest fi re of sound. This stunning collaborative work suggests by its very nature a powerful and signifi cant unifi cation. While many musicians have attempted to forge East-meets-West connections, rarely have they been as successful in creating as seamless and exhilarating a bond.
