This year you might notice a conflict between a friend-ship and a romance. Whether they are separate or tied to-gether within one relationship, you will need to resolve this issue sooner rather than later. If you are single, you draw many people toward you, but you might want to be careful about how much you share. If you are attached, you cherish your time with your sweetie.

Sometimes there are too many choices on your plate. You easily could feel this way today, and these opportu-nities keep coming in. You fi-nally might have to say “no.” Tonight: Not to be found.

A last-minute burden could mar your morning. Others count on your ability to handle hassles and keep the peace. A partner could feel put off by one of your choices. Tonight: Invite friends over for leftovers.

Reach out to someone at a distance. The news you hear could be quite interesting, but you still might be surprised by it. Use the day-time hours to do some shop-ping. Tonight: Out and about.

Be sensitive to a friend or partner who often offers to help you a lot. You could be dragging from the recent pace and need a time-out. Tonight: Read between the lines.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I al-ways have had a low resistance to germs and have caught colds ev-ery two to three months. I take ad-equate vitamins and B-12 shots. Approximately eight months ago, I started taking 50 mg zinc once a day. I feel fine and have not caught a cold since taking zinc. A local pharmacist advised that zinc con-tains too much metal to take on a regular basis and to take it only at the onset of a cold. I feel fine now and would like to continue taking zinc. What do you advise? — L.F.

ANSWER: It is unusual to see problems from excess zinc, but it can happen. Zinc and cop-per both are absorbed by the same enzyme, so with too much zinc, you can’t properly absorb copper. A student of mine pub-lished a report of someone who took MUCH more zinc than you are taking (the adequate intake per the Institute of Medicine is 11 mg, and you are taking about five times that amount; this per-son was taking 30 times the rec-ommended amount), who had extraordinarily low copper levels and dangerously low white blood cell counts.

The upper limit for safe zinc intake is 40 mg, and I would definitely recommend against taking more than that every day. I would think taking 25 mg dai-ly would be safe. However, it’s not clear that zinc prevents colds, at least when studied in large groups of people.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 60-year-old woman, recently diagnosed with essential throm-bocytosis, which apparently is rare and a form of bone marrow cancer. It was found during a routine blood test, and I now have blood work done every two to three months to monitor my platelets, which currently are at 657,000. My hematologist does not want to start chemo till I reach closer to 800,000. I under-stand the disease is not fatal while under a doctor’s care.

I have few symptoms, mostly tiredness. I would just like to start tackling this sooner rather than lat-er, but I don’t quite understand why I can’t start chemo (hy-

droxyurea, in this case) now, no matter how rough that may or may not be. Can you tell me more about the reasons why? — R.E.

ANSWER: Essential thrombocytosis is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder, meaning a type of blood cell is being made abnormally in the bone marrow — in this case, your platelets. Most people with this condition have a nor-mal life expectancy; however, in a few percent of people, the condition “transforms” into acute leukemia. The major symptoms of ET include head-ache, lightheadedness, visual changes and fainting. These usually are treated successfully with aspirin. Apart from trans-forming to leukemia, the other risks of ET are bleeding and clotting, which happen at a rate of about 2 percent per year.

Hydroxyurea is used to re-duce the risk of excess clotting. It usually is reserved for people over 60, or with a platelet count over 1 million. It sounds like your doctor thinks your risk of clotting now does not outweigh the risks of hydroxyurea.

(Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual let-ters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
