This 16th century Shiva temple has long been revered as a holy site. Its many temples have given Harihareshwar the nickname of the Kashi of the South. The complex consists of the Gayatri Tirth, Sita Sansar, Vishnu Pad, Pandav Tirth and 101 Kaurav Astitva temples. The other temples in the premises are of Shri Kalbhairav and Shri Yogeshwari.

The pradakshina is a path around the temple which climbs a hill, into the sea and around the shoreline and then back to the temple. The Pradakshina trail is a steady climb with rock cut steps, winding up to about 200 feet. Then there is a descent of another flight of rock cut steps which lead out to the sea. There is a flat table top ledge with overhanging rocks eroded by the ever battering waves of the sea during high tides. It is not advisable to enter into this area when the tides are high. Pradakshina can be done when the tide is low. The Gayatri Tirth lies to the right of the rocky face of the hillock, just as you enter the pradakshina area. From here, the ledge flares appreciably, giving a majestic view of the jagged rocky wall on the right and the chopping sea on the left. The sunset is very spectacular from this point. The rest of the pradakshina can be completed in about 15 minutes.===========

At the rear of the temple are steps leading to the top of a hill and confronted by huge boulder spilt into half. Legend has that the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame, while in exile, had visit Harihareshwar. Finding their path block by a boulder, mighty Bhima wielded fist and smashed the rock in two. At the bottom, towards the right, is a cleft another rock from where issues fort sweet, drinkable water, or so the local claim. But I can’t verify that as I didn’t stoop for a sip. Down there, beside a hurt boulder, is an imprint of Bhima’s for carved in rock. The temple opens around 6am and shut by 9pm.

TEST THE WATER : –After you’re done with prayer, there is flight of stone steps leading down Harihareshwar Beach, which is as long its name, all 1/2km of it. The beach , act ally split in two parts, north and south, the Kalbhairav Temple complex, is often than not sparsely populated, especially on weekdays. The southern beach where the MTDC resort is located, is what you dreamed about. The sand is as white as on some other beaches but it clean and the seclusion can give rise romantic inclinations if you’re on that of a holiday. The southern stretch is mostly deserted, as most pilgrims after visit the temple feel they deserve a bit of material indulgence. They usually lounge about by the water and head straight for the chaat stalls and sundry amusement on the northern beach, which also sees much action when the fishing boats come in. Warning the long beach is quite inviting but there are strong and

treacherous undercurrents, which locals and temple officials say have caused many a mishap. Swim during high tide and even then, don’t venture too far out.

GANESH GULLY : – This is a narrow cleft about 3ft wide between two rocks, just about 150ft behind Kalbhairav Temple that goes down to the sea. Apparently, at the bottom of this cleft, there is a niche between the sea rocks, which is about 30ft underwater. It seems that at high tide, when the waves dash against the shore and are receding, a Ganesh idol can be seen, depending on the force of the retreat. But the person narrating this to me hasn’t seen it of late, although he claims to have seen the idol during his childhood days. Conversely, it appears that at low tide it is easy to see the status at the bottom of the nice, when the waters have receded far from shore. It’s all a matter of belief, as the tide doesn’t venture far out enough to get a glimpse.=================
