An Industrial Revolution for Protection & ControlThe HardFiber Process Bus Systemrepresents a true breakthrough in theinstallation and ownership of protectionand control systems, by reducing theoverall labor required for substationdesign, construction, and testing. Thisinnovative solution addresses the threekey issuesdriving the labor required forprotectionandcontroldesign, constructionandtesting:

• Everysubstationisuniquemakingdesignanddraftingaone-offsolutionforeverystation

• Milesofcopperwiresneedstobepulled,splicedandterminated

• Timeconsumingtestingandtroubleshootingofthousandsofconnectionsmustbeperformedbyskilledpersonnel

The HardFiber System was designed toaddressthesechallengesandreducethe

Key Benefits of the HardFiber SystemThe underlying driver for the HardFiberSystemisthereductionofTotalLifeCostsofprotectionandcontrolthroughlaborandresourceoptimization.Thisoptimizationisachieved by replacing individual, labor-intensive, individually terminatedcopperwireswithstandardizedphysicalinterfacesandopendigitalcommunications

• Reducesupto50%oflaborforprotection&control

• Replacesextensivecopperwiringwithpre-terminatedcopperandfibercables

• Reducesspecializedon-sitelaborbyshiftingspendingtoreadilyavailablematerials

• Improvesemployeesafetybyleavingpotentiallydangeroushigh-energysignalsintheswitchyard

the labor requirementsbeingtheon-sitelabor. This labor is almost exclusivelymanual, with very little opportunity ofautomationoroptimization.Theendresultisavery labor-intensiveanderror-proneprocess that adds significant time andcosttoeveryprojectandmakeslong-termmaintenance and changes difficult toimplement.

The Challenges of Copper WiringWith the introduction and progressionof microprocessor-based protectionand control devices, there has been thecontinuedintegrationofdiscretefunctionsinto a single device. This integrationhas delivered cost savings in terms ofmaterials, but the installation uses thesame labor-intensive technology datingbacktoelectromechanicalrelays.

What is IEC 61850 Process Bus?ProcessBus isatermusedtodescribeaprotectionandcontrol system thatusesadigitalcommunicationsarchitecturetocarryinformationbetweentheswitchyardand protection and control devices inthe control building. This informationconsists of sampled values, equipmentstatusandoutputcommands. IEC61850istheinternationalstandardthatdefinesthe specific communication protocol forProcess Bus implementations used forprotectionandcontrolapplications.

HardFiber Process Bus SystemTheHardFiberSystemisaKEMAtestedIEC61850 Process Bus Solution that allowsthe mapping of measurements madein the switchyard to protection relayslocatedinthecontrolhouseusingsecurecommunications. The HardFiber Systemaddresses the key technical and logisticchallenges affecting the labor requiredfor substation design, construction andmaintenance.Thisuniquesystemprovidesa total laborsavingsolutionandyetstilladheres to the practices used today forprotectiverelayingandcontrol.

Adheringtoexistingpractices:

• Providingacompletesystemwithallthenecessarycomponentsformeasurement,control,andprotection

• Coveringallutilitysubstationprotectionapplications

• Beingunderstoodanddeployedbythecurrentutilityworkforce

Addedbenefits:

• Reducededicatedon-sitelaborwithpre-fabricatedmaterialtoreducecosts

• Ispracticaltocommissionandmaintain

• Isasreliableasexistingprotectionandcontrolsystems

• UsesanopenIEC61850ProcessBusarchitecturethatcansupportsmulti-venderapplications

• Isscalableandcanbeintegratedintoexistingsubstationdesigns

Copper connections from apparatus are made directly to Bricks and end in the switchyard

A single fiber patch cord makes all of the connections between relays and Bricks

A single fiber optic connection replaces dozens of wires on a protection relay

The HardFiber System uses IEC 61850 to communicate measurements and commands between Bricks and relays in the control building over dedicated point-to-point fiber optic connections that avoids cyber-security issues altogether.

System ArchitectureThearchitectureoftheHardFiberSystemisdrivenbythemappingofsignalsbetweentheprimaryapparatusandtheprotectionandcontroldevices.

The measurement of field signals andrespectivemappingofthesesignals, usingthe open IEC 61850 communicationsprotocol, backtothecontrolhouseisdonethroughahardenedinterfacedevicecalledtheHardFiberBrick.

Usingmade-to-orderOutdoorFiberCablesconnecting theBrick toaCrossConnectPanel in the control houseprovides fastand error-proof installationwithout theneedforon-sitesplicingorterminating.

Keeping true to theexisting topologyoftraditional substations, each protectionand control device included in the zoneof protectionwill be connected directlyto Bricks through dedicated fiber opticconnections.

This simple, purpose-drivenarchitecturethatusestheIEC61850openstandardforcommunications,providesdedicatedpoint-to-point connections between the Brickandprotectiverelayswithoutintroducinganyissuesrelatingtodatasynchronization,settingmanagementorCyber-Security.

The HardFiber System can easily be incrementally scaled to include new equipment as stations evolve. Duplicated Bricks in the switchyard provide a drastic improvement in reliability and security over today’s technology.

Each Brick transmits measurements and accepts controls from up to 4 separate protection and control devices.

Dedicated Digital Cores within each Brick allows for application additions and modifications without affecting other devices accepting information from the Brick

ScalabilityThe true test of any system, includinga Process Bus system, is its ability toincrementally scale up tomeet specificapplicationswithoutadverselyaffectingtheotherdevicesinthesystem.Today’sprotection and control systems arealreadynaturallyscalable.

Thechallengeforcommunication-basedprotection systems becomes makingextensions and modifications withoutdisrupting the in-serviceprotectionandcontrolsystem.

Byrecognizingthatthemappingbetweenpowersystemsignalsandprotectionandcontroldevicesisfundamentallydrivenbythetopologyoftheunderlyingsubstation, the HardFiber System is optimallypartitioned and connected to allow foradditions, modificationsandupgradestothesystem–withoutriskinginterruptionor degradation to critical in-serviceprotection.

Reliability,Dependability,SecurityThe HardFiber System provides anunprecedented level of diagnostics andself-checking,allowingcriticalprotectionandcontrolsystemstodosomethingthattheyhavenever donebefore – operatewithoutroutinemaintenance.

Internaldiagnosticsandself-testswithineach Brick monitor dozens of criticalinternal subsystems and provide thisinformation several hundred timesper second. Duplicate Bricks can beprovisionedtoacquireeach inputsignaltwice, allowing protection and controldevices to continuously crosscheckcriticalprotectionmeasurementsbeforeexecutingcommandsviafullyredundantoutputs.

WiththeHardFiberredundantarchitecture,eachprotectionandcontroldevicecanbeconfiguredtomaximizedependabilityandsecurity,addressingspecificapplicationrequirements.

The Challenge for UtilitiesModern electricity companies dealwithmany individual challenges every daywithoneof the largestbeing theabilityto address the constant inflationarypressures on both labor and materialswhilestillhavingtomanagetheirdemandforincreaseinloadbytheircustomers.
