up at the door for the 9:00 opening and in the first hour alone, 52 participants wereprovided with a food box package.

The center has been ableto get some volunteers, butthere are times where it isnot enough. When truckloadsof food are brought in fromthe regional food bank inWorcester, extra hands areneeded to haul the goods intothe building. That 12 steps upto then next level begins towear on a person when theyhave to do it one hundredtimes. The dedicated onesput in hours every month andare on hand to assist duringthe busiest moments. If you

could donate a few hours a week or month, please contact the center. On this day,Jayne Vranos and Eljay Laforte were on hand to distribute turkeys for families tohave for the holiday season.

One participant in theCHIPIn program recently isRichard Linehan. Richardhas had a string of bad luckand unfortunate life circum-stances. Having grown up inCharlton, serving as an alterboy at St. Joseph’s Churchand graduating from BayPath Regional High School,he has roots in the commu-nity. His trade at school waselectrician, and he switchedoff to computers for a shortspell, but finally went on towork in electrical. Hiscurrent expertise is layingwiring for the latest in largescale electrical systems forsolar farms.

Although unable to findfull time work because of aemaciated spinal disc injury, he works for a temp service andwas able to help install a major project in Millbury, Mass on a 41/2 megawatt solar farm. One of the drawbacks to this type ofwork is that much of it is spread geographically and it is anexpense to drive to a site. One offer he had to turn down waslocated in Waltham. He said that although it paid $20/hr, it cost$80 in gas just to drive out and back, including the tolls.

Richard is not married, but met a girl back in 2006. Theymoved into an apartment together, planning on getting married. When she became pregnant, they moved from a basementapartment to a slightly larger one. Then Richard lost his job, sothey moved in with her mother. His girlfriend, Rebecca be-came pregnant with their second child and Richard was in and

out of work. Although he did major repairs on the home, thestress became too much with Rebecca’s mother demandingfunds for her own rent, bills for gas to heat the house andjobs becoming hit or miss and finally she asked him to leave.

Richard moved out and found a place to live with achildhood friend. Being 50% disabled, he has been unable tofind suitable work. His situation makes it nearly impossible tosend child support for the two boys but when he can findwork, he sends them money.

Richard has actually done volunteer work for CHIPIn,but now he has had to go to them for help. The food that hecould not buy on his own has allowed him to get by in thesetough times.

Starting in September she has been going to the CHIPInfood bank for her weekly groceries. Meanwhile, she hasbeen collecting unemployment and taking classes in health aidtraining. She hopes to get back on her feet and be able tomanage on her own with a job in that area.

CHIPIn has been a great resource to enable her to getenough groceries to supply a hungry family. Both her girls areenrolled in school, one at Bay Path and one at Shepherd Hill.

Wreath  Making  Workshop at Senior CenterIt was a special Saturday afternoon at the Charlton

Senior Center on November 16th. Residents were invited to aworkshop to learn how to make their own Christmas Wreath.

Sponsored  by  the Charlton Recreation Commission, itwas open to all.

Basic materials were provided by the instructor, TinaBemis of Bemis Nursery of Spencer, Massachusetts. Othernatural ornaments were donated by Fay Mountain Farm.

The finishedwreaths consistedof mixed ever-greens, a plain bow, berries, cones, andpods as well assome Christmasornaments. Sofreshly cut were theevergreens that theentire room smelledas fragrant as a

walk in the woods.Priced in two categories which included the lesson and theassistance of the instructor, wreaths cost either $20 or $30.

The more costly ones included a fancy bow and theornaments.

In addition to the workshop, the guests were treated tocoffee, juice and pastry.

All things considered, it was a delightful way to relax, socialize and go home with a beautiful wreath made withyour own hands. And... the training on making the wreaththey can now share with others.

Tina began teaching how to make wreaths back in 1996.At the time, she was a self-taught wreathmaker, goingthrough a number of trials to get it right. Since that time shehas taught hundreds of people how to make a wreath andthey all went home proud of their results.

Bemis Farms NurseryBemis Farms Nursery is located at 29 North Brookfield Road, in

Spencer, Massachusetts. This family owned, quality oriented, retail plant nursery,

greenhouse, and garden center are passionate about making sureyou are successful in your gardening endeavors. They strive tomake sure you have plants and products to make your yard “pop”!

Bemis Farms would love to be able to share local and timelygarden tips, frost alerts, and container gardening workshops withyou. Sign up for out email newsletter at BemisFarmsNursery.com

For some, celebrating a holiday isn’t only about a single day. It’s a season of festivities where the journey is just as important asthe destination. Bemis Farms personnel state “you won’t forget thetime you spent with your mother, daughter, sister or friend, hum-ming carols and breathing in the scent of freshly-cut evergreensand spicy cinnamon sticks while hand-crafting some really beautifuldecorations for your home.” Here are some upcoming workshops:

Saturday, November 23, 2013 9am - 1pmKick off the holiday season with a new tradition. Because each

home is different, you choose which three projects from the listbelow will best beautify your home. Using mostly local fresh-cut greens sprinkled with a fewfancy greens from afar.

If you’d like to embellish your decorations with pods, berries, fruit, cones, twigs, cinnamon sticks and shiny ornaments, thenplease stay for a special, catered luncheon, and decorate yourcreations after the meal.

Sunday, November 24, 2013 10am, 1 pm or 3 pmChoose a shape, and create a plain wreath with freshly cut

evergreens and a velvet bow for only $20.If you would like to create a fancy wreath with cones, pods,

Charlton Real EstateActivity Summary for 2013

(Diane Dabrowski is a local Real Estate agent with housing in herblood. Her lifetime experience has made her one of the toprealtors in the area and she has her door open to help you,

whether you are buying a home or selling one.)

It’s my hobby, my career, and my daily focus. Peoplealways ask me, “Diane, is the real estate market still slow?”“Are house prices still dropping?” “Can I find a great deal,Diane?” Like an Attorney, my answer is usually: “It de-pends.”

Overall, Charlton had a much high average sales pricethan in previous years. $29,574,800 of residential propertyhas closed so far in 2013! These homes sold in an averageof 118 days.

The highest priced sale in Charlton was a home for$660,000. It had an original price of $799,900. Typically, aCharlton home that goes on deposit has been reduced 4-6%.When the reduced priced home transfers to new buyers , theseller had accepted an offer of an additional 2-3% less.

Charlton sellers looking to maximum the amount theycould get had a small window of opportunity this summer. We had a reduced number of homes on the market forbuyers to choose from. At this time, we are holding steadywith 63 homes on the market. Most homes were for sale 134days before they got an offer.

This data has been obtained from the Realtor M.L.S.(Multiple Listing Service) The report compared all active, reduced, pending, sold and expired listings in town. Privatesales would not have been captured in this data.

If you’d like more spefic assessor information on yourproperty, you may be surprised what you can now find on

line! Go to www.townofCharlton.net. If you click on theAssessor or Patriot Property link you can research yourproperty information your assessment is based on. GISmapping link has a bird’s eye view of property lines.WWW.Masslandrecords.com is where you can researchdeed and sale information.

To answer the questions most of you seem to be curiousabout:

“Is the real estate market still slow?” For some sellerswho are not priced attractively, I suspect they would say themarket is slow. If the home is in a price range where there isnot much competition, they may see an offer in a matter ofdays.

Are prices still dropping? In some price ranges they are.I see a huge demand right now for ranches and second/investment homes like a waterfront or multi-family homes. Some home owners may be better off to do minor improve-ments and leave the price where it is than they would be ifthey dropped the price into a saturated price range and stillhad to be concerned with lender required repairs.

Can I still find a great deal? Yes! I recommend usingthe help of a Buyers Agent to make recommendations in yourbest interest. Coming into the Winter season, sellers may beopen to negotiate with you. Base your offer on comparablesales that have closed within six months. Make sure youhave your financing set up before you start looking at proper-ties. In my experience, sellers will be much more willing tonegotiate with you when they know you are ready to closewithout contingencies.

Watch for future summaries on the real estate marketand the opportunities it might bring to you.

We can discuss your goals and howthey relate to:

Knitters Donate Clothing to CHIPInCHIPIn is an acronym, but you could not tell that to

Lucille Bonin and Annette Blash. Lucille and Annette haveknown each other for 67 years and are cousins by marriage. They have taken to heart the meaning of chipping in to helpothers.

For the last 4 years, these two champions have beenknitting year-round to produce a collection of clothing items, including hats, mittens, and slippers with the offer to makeanything else upon request. (She has made sweater jacketsfor herself.)

Lucille worked at the former American Optical for 44years in plastics and molding. Her husband worked at thesame place in grounds maintenance. An enthusiastic 74 yearold grandmother, she started out knitting for her grandchil-dren. Next, she was at Notre Dame Church in Southbridge, and a lady came in with her granddaughter looking cold, soshe made her a hat. Another lady, playing bingo, notice whatshe had done and offered Lucille some yarn. The next thingwe knew, the three of us got together on Friday nights.

When her grandson began school at Charlton Elementary, she knitted hats for everyone in his class as a Christmaspresent.

When she heard of the work CHIPIN was doing, sheasked the Director, Darlene Emco Rollins if they wanteddonated knitted items. Darlene was thrilled at the idea andwelcomed it with open arms. The estimated count was for 45sets to provide for the registered CHIPIn clients. Suddenlyword got around and she started getting donations of yarnfrom everybody. They hear about our project and more andmore are giving yarn.

Ever since the two have continued the tradition. Sodedicated to the cause, Lucille already has the batch for nextyear nearly completed except for two more hats.

Not only that, she has a ‘knitter in training’ in the form ofher granddaughter. She baby-sits her granddaughter, pickingher up at 6:30 AM and then knits while she watches her.Little did she know that her granddaughter was also watchingher grandmother and eventually wormed her way onto herlap. After watching the master, she said “I can do that!”

So Lucille let her put her hands on the knitting needleswhile she continued. Soon, her granddaughter wanted to do it

on her own. Gram set her up and she is now knitting thestraight stitch, making her own pair of slippers.

She was skilled enough to surprise the nurses during arecent visit to Lucille’s sister in law at the Overlook inCharlton. Her next lesson will be to stitch with pearl onceshe has finished her first project.

What a great ‘family’ tradition! Our thanks from thewhole town of Charlton go out to these giving individuals.Thank you Lucille Bonin and Annette Blash!

There were more than 85 senior citizens present at thesenior center to feast on a Thanksgiving dinner on Wednes-day, November 20th. There was a spirit of congeniality thatwas evidenced in their collective wisdom regarding friend-ship.

Groups of neighbors, relatives, and former Charlton Highstudents chatted and reminisced about their families andfriends.

Road ConstructionScheduled on Route 20

Maintenance work has been going on along the EasternLane of Route 20 from about November 12th to 22nd. Thehead of the maintenance crew indicated that this was work toresolve a water drainage problem, and that the placement ofthis piping would address the issue.

Photos show the road being cut with a jackhammer, digging the trench with an excavator, preparing the seal onthe pipe with rubber and caulking, then placing the pipe intothe trench.

Road Construction Scheduled in FutureThe Massachusetts Department of Transportation will be

doing more work on Route 20. The construction project willcover a section on Route 20 at Richardson's Corner inCharlton, continuing easterly 3.2 miles to the Route 12intersection in Oxford. It is scheduled to be under waystarting in the winter of 2016.

This project will entail highway reconstruction, widening,

traffic signals and installation of median barrier. The bridgescarrying US 20 over the Little River in Charlton and US 20over the French River in Oxford will also be rehabilitated. This project is in the preliminary design phase.

Workers have been out by 7:00 AM in themorning, despite some cold temperatures. Here, even applying the ‘plumbers putty’ to the rubberseal was difficult. Gloves were a necessity.

Recycling Committee Discusses$1000 Charlton Grant

On November 14, the Recycling Committee met todiscuss the recent grant for Environmental Protection.

Previously, the group had discussed the concept ofcomposting to eliminate the disposal of garden organic materialwhich could be composted to provide an additive to soils.

Their brainstorming lead them to consider the purchase ofrecylcing containers for both composting and other recyclablematerials which should be kept out of the waste streamheaded for landfills.

Senator Stephen M. Brewer and Representative Anne M.Gobi announced that nine towns in Central Massachusettswere awarded municipal/regional grants from the Massachu-setts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) under itsSustainable Material Recovery Program (SMRP). The

funding has beenawarded to townsthat operate recy-cling, composting, reuse and sourcereduction activitiesthat increase thediversion of munici-pal solid waste andhousehold hazard-ous waste.

“I applaud thetowns for theircommitment to thisprogram and to theresponsible man-

agement of solid waste,” said Brewer. “This grant is importantto the Commonwealth’s ongoing partnership with municipali-ties to do a better job of recycling and reuse. This practice isgood for the environment, good for our friends and neighbors, and good for future generations.”

“Finding sensible solutions to deal with waste is necessary.I appreciate the work our towns do to reduce solid wastewhich is a direct cost savings to every person in the commu-nity. These grants are vitally important in helping communitiesincrease their recycling numbers and reducing waste,” saidGobi.

Communities represented by Brewer and Gobi receivingfunding include: Ashby - $500, Athol - $1,000, Barre - $750

Brookfield - $500, Charlton - $1,000, Hardwick - $500,North Brookfield - $500, Spencer - $8,500, and Ware - $750.

The SMRP was created under 310 Code of Massachu-setts Regulations 19.300-303 and the Green Communities Act,which directs a portion of the proceeds from the sale of WasteEnergy Certificates to recycling programs approved byMassDEP, in total 137 recipients will be awarded $2.47million. A full list of recipients can be viewed atwww.mass.gov/dep.

Mr. Shepherd

It was all men on deck on the stage at the Shepherd Hillauditorium on Thursday, November 21st in front of a sell-outcrowd. About two dozen high school boys volunteered to runthrough ‘training camp’ in preparation for a one night eventof interviewing, tuxedo modeling and of course the showingoff of a special talent.

That talent varied from singing, dancing, rubix cuberacing, Morway lifting to a ‘magic show’. The evening wasMC’d by teacher Matt Morway who in his own right dis-played the talent of ‘instant’ costume changes, some lesscomfortable than others. Matt poked fun at everyone, includ-ing the judges and himself as he interviewed each candidatein the Mr. Shepherd Hill contest as they modeled their casualwear.

Questions like “What is your favorite movie?” “What isyour favorite food?” were asked to solicit some personalinformation while he managed to find something comical intheir audition. Onestudent he pre-sented to theaudience as a ‘littleelf’ since theChristmas seasonwas approaching.

After groupsong and dance bythe upperclassmen, the interviews wereof Matt Williams,Bryce French,Chris Lindstrom, Sean Gatsogiannis, Lucas Patenaude, DanButler, Keegan LaPierre, Jake Gelb. This was followed bythe first talent group of Anthony Battista, Kevin Falcone,CongKe Li/Brendan Pratt, Seamus Giguere, Tanner Amico,Alex Veber, and Kurt Bilis.

After the intermission, the underclassmen did their dancenumber. Interviews werethen of Alex Veber,Seamus Giguere, AnthonyBattista, Brendan Pratt,Kevin Falcone, TannerAmico, CongKe Li, andKurt Bilis.

The Shepherd Hill Girls Cross Country Team claimed thefirst Division 1 distrct title ever on Saturday, November 9th atthe Gardner Municipal Golf Course. Their coach, NicoleFossas was nothing less than elated at their tremendouseffort.

Prior to the 5k race, one of the runners had been sick anda number of them had slight injuries and yet, the bond be-tween them drove their inner selves to the limit in capturingfirst place.

They even had the full contingent of their team, notentered in the race, get up early in the morning and trek up toGardner to cheer them on and support them. The weatherwas quite cold with temps in the mid 30’s.

The team effort was obvious with four Shepherd Hill girlsshocking their tough competitors, Wachusett Regional HighSchool powerhouse by finishing in the top ten positions andtheir fifth point scorer, Emily Thibaud finishing twentieth.

The team was lead by Stella Worters, 3rd, Juleanna

The Hill girls finished their regular season with a fantasticundefeated dual meet record of 13-0. In addition, they com-peted in several invitationals, including one on Martha’sVineyard where they finished 2nd, one in Amherst where theyfinished 3rd and the last, called the Twilight Meet whichincluded top runners throughout the state where they finished6th overall.

They won in the District Competition which qualifiedthem for the state finals.

Coach Nicole Fossas has been coaching the team for thelast five years. She is also an assistant track coach at the highschool, but has worked with runners at the Dudley MiddleSchool where she is a teaching assistant.

She has a son, Elijah, a senior who runs for boys cross

country team, and who is also quite proud of both the teamand his mom.

“They started the work for this back in June when theyset their mind on their goal. They put in the work all summerto stay in shape.”

Amazingly, four of my top seven runners were playingsoccer last year, but being a close knit group of friends, theyswitched sports for their senior year. They knew each otherwell, put in their efforts all summer long.

I told the team that it is never about one race becauseanything can happen. We had one girl sick for districts andthey all had aches and pains, but we beat Wachusett withthem at their at the absolute best.

These girls, they knew that was what they wanted. Theyran spring track since their freshman year. One team mem-ber this year was a field hockey player last year, one was acheerleader and a volleyball player. This year they were partof something big and they know it.

During the season, I fed them, giving them breakfast onthe weekends and during the week, there were lots ofspaghetti nights.

Most of the youngsters start doing cross country inmiddle school in fifth grade, but many are lost soccer whenentering seventh grade. I was lucky to have some return tothe joy of running and be a part of the team. Since they knoweach other from track, it was a natural for them.

During the year I told them that they will spend a lot oftime together - basically for ten months. I made the point thatthey won’t always get along, but they need to respect oneanother. They figure it out and resolve their differences.

They are all great girls. I will be sorry to see my seniorsgo. Alison, Valarie and Emily were always their switching forthe 5th, 6th and 7th positions, but playing a valuable role inraising the score of the opponents. (Low score wins in crosscountry.) Kaylin Heatherman was the comedian of the teamand she was the alternate for the 7th man, but was thealternate number 8.

African Music and Art ProgramOn Friday, November 15th, the Heritage School had a cultural

awareness presentation that would have matched the best of anytheater in the country.

Not only did talented performers introduce the fourth graders to avariety of instruments which were later used in the final performance, but the youngsters shined with glee as they shook the maracas, banged their hands on the rope tuned drums, or with mallets on bassdrums.

The entire concept for this cultural enrichment program was thebrainstorm of Heritage School teacher, Cynthia Rawson. As an adult,

Cultural Awareness for Charlton Heritage School Students

she had experienced visits to local museums, includingthat of Higgins Armory. She visited Clinton's Galleryof African Art last year for one of the graduatecourses that she teaches and was amazed at thecollection and the kindness of Zach Combs, theDirector.

As a teacher of art, she wanted to bring some of

this enrichment back to the students at the school. She wrotea Target Grant, hoping that she could arrange for the Galleryto visit the Heritage school, but she did not get the grant.Although she was disappointed, Mr. Combs helped turnthings around by offering some grant funding if matchingfunds were raised.

Using CulturalEnrichment fundsallocated each year bythe Parent TeacherOrganization, and thehelp of the StudentCouncil, the fundraising goal wasreached. As an addedbenefit, GordonLankton agreed to loanthe school elevenartifacts to inspirestudents. These will beon display through Dec. 5.

The activities began back on October 29, 30,31, and Nov.

1st, where eight classes of 4th graders traveled to HigginsArmory in Worcester. (This comes on the heels of theunfortunate closing of the Higgins Armory in December, andwe felt that it was a cultural enrichment opportunity not to be

missed.)The Student Council here at Heritage is assisting

in a fund-raiser to help defray the cost, and thedistrict bus allowed them to keep the cost down.

This field trip provided many opportunities forboth cultural enrichment as well as integration withinthe fourth grade curriculum, specifically LanguageArts and Social Studies. During the Higgins visit, allstudents attended a craft workshop in which theyreplicated a metal tooling portrait. These were ondisplay for Parent Teacher Conferences.

Back in school, the students designed Jestermasks during their art classes, where they exploredthe forms of entertainment common in the MiddleAges. They used fabric and many accessories to

create an authentic look. The Art Curriculum was directly aligned with this presen-

tation during the month of October.Third grade classes created life-likemasks from fabric, paint, raffia, andbeads. They will, hopefully, wearthese to the performance!

As a part of the learningexperience, the second graderslooked up African animals on WorldBook in computer class, with eachone making one out of modelingclay. They also made Masai Adorn-ment collars, worn to signifystatus.... single, married, land owner, etc. and necklaces andwraps to wear to the performance. Third graders madeAfrican masks, which they brought to the concert to surpriseIssa, Balla, and Zach.

The second grade classes made models of Africananimals from clay andpainted them. Theyalso be worked withtie-dye paper, creat-ing an Africansilhouette landscape. In addition, theydesigned decorativeneck pieces to wearto the final perfor-mance.

During computerclasses, they wereable to do researchon Africa by explor-ing the unlimitedresources availablethrough the application and use of World Book.Their work involved a writing component, as thestudents wrote about their experiences.

This was truly a school-wide event, and theactivities planned were put in place to ensurethat every student had a part of the uniqueexperience. The Gallery of African Art providedeleven pieces of authentic African Art on loanto Heritage School for the display cases. Thework will all be on display at Parent Confer-ences on Dec 5th. There will be raffle basketsat this time and chances to win them as ourfund-raiser.

Performance DayWhen the performance day came, Zach

Combs, Director of the Gallery of African Art inClinton, spent the day at Heritage with authenticdrums and drummers from Africa. Every fourth

grade class at Heritage was given ahalf hour drumming/music class. Allclasses were invited to visit the gymthroughout the day and sit in on adrumming workshop.

At 2:00 PM the entire schoolmarched to the gym for CrocodileRiver Music's premiere show,Trinidad 2 Timbuktu, hosted bythe Heritage School for the very firsttime. Students attending the perfor-mance participated by wearing their

masks and costumes with many colors. The drumming began with Issa Coulibaly pounding out a

beat and silencing the crowd. His rhythm and movementacross the floor drew everyone’s attention.

The interactive musical geography lesson took theaudience on a journey that started in Maliwith the music and rhythms that originatedthere in African tribal and ritual drumming. From there, they traveled around the world, exploring the calypso, reggae, flamenco,Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban music and dancestyles that have blossomed from theseAfrican musical roots.

The audience journeyed of thousandsof miles and through hundreds of years oftradition. The musicians introduced listenersto native instruments and the variouslanguages that mark each genre. Theydemonstrated how regional “dialects” havefound their way into the original Africanlanguage of rhythm and song.

Through lecture and discussion, song and danceperformance, and opportunities for audience partici-pation, this program invited the listeners to see howour very wide world is, in some ways, a very smallone indeed.

Moon Hike FinaleAs the winter season approaches and the colder weather tends to keep folks indoors, there are still a few opportunities to

get out there and appreciate the beautiful things nature has to offer us.The Park Rangers at both Buffumville Lake and Hodges Village Dam began hosting Full Moon Hikes in July 2013.This was in response to the overwhelming attendance to the one full moon hike held in 2012 that included 101 participants

in 3 tours. Attendance at our latest one in November had 26 participants and we will be planning more for 2014.They have one last chance coming up on Saturday, December 12/14 starting at 4:00 PM. Meet at the Buffumville Dam

Office at 48 Old Oxford Road, Charlton. Please join a Park Ranger for this expedition. Call Park Ranger Jamie Kordack at 508-248-5697 for more details.

Watching the sunset over open water without the trees to block the view can offer spectacular spectrumsof color such as this photograph taken at Buffumville Dam as the sun lowered on the horizon.

The ‘early birds’ were out foraging. These turkeys knew it was time to part with Thanksgiving coming soon.

Beat the Beep Smoke Alarm ProgramSince Nicole’s Law was implemented in

2006, many Massachusetts homes haveinstalled carbon monoxide (CO) alarms andmany lives have been saved and injuriesprevented. Perhaps every fire department has

a CO alarm success story from one of the extended poweroutages we’ve had these past few years. However, COalarms only last 5-7 years and many are now coming to theend of their useful lives. No appliance lasts forever.

The Department of Fire Services has information on theCharlton Fire Department website to educate both firstresponders and the community at large about the importanceof beating the beep and replacing aging CO alarms. Residentsare encouraged to continue to have working CO and smokealarms in their homes.

Beat the Beep Department of Fire Services has bor-rowed the slogan and logo from Kidde’s Beat the Beepcampaign to remind people to replace aging CO alarms. Oneof the signs that a carbon monoxide alarm has reached the“end of life” stage will be a “chirping” that does not stop untilthe unit is powered off. For models with a digital read out, itwill have an “ERR” or “EO9” or “END” message. The mostcommon sign is it makes the low battery signal even afterbrand new batteries are installed. That’s the main reasonbehind the Beat the Beep campaign.

First responders need to know that many CO alarms arereaching this end of life stage soon. When responding tohomes where the CO alarm is beeping, it’s important for themto check the age of the detector. The entire alarm and not justthe batteries may need replacing in non-emergency cases. The Department of Fire Services has a short PowerPoint™for first responders on our website that is also being used byMass. Firefighting Academy instructors.

Increase your chances on saving lives! Alarms warnresidents in the event of a fire. Test them. If they are batteryoperated, fall is a good time to put in new batteries. They giveyou time to leave the building before your escape route isblocked by deadly smoke, heat and toxic gases. Install one onevery level of your home, in hallways outside the bedrooms,at the top of open stairways, at the base of cellar stairs, andinside the bedroom for sound sleepers or smokers. Test themto be sure they work!

Box Tops for EducationYou see them on soup cans, on tissue boxes, on cereals,

paper towel products and more. Even Ziploc Foodstorage bags have them and some areworth extra points!

Well, the news is that theseare not just trash. The ParentTeacher Organization is running acampaing again to collect as many ofthese labels as possible topurchase badly needed equip-ment for the classrooms.

In the end, the childrenbenefit and all it takes is for agood effort on the part of thecommunity to save these labelsand then drop them off in theoffice of any school.

That means, the Charlton Elementary Schoolon Burlingame Road, Heritage School and CharltonMiddle School on Oxford Road.

Each box top is worth ten cents. Doing the math, let’s saywe buy the following once a month for a year. The list is asfollows: Cheerios, Betty Crocker cake, Gold medal flour,Betty Crocker frosting, Ziploc freezer bags, Ziploc lunchbags, Hamburger Helper, Scott Towels, Motts Applesaucesnackpack, Hefty Trash bags, Green Giant carrots, GreenGiant asparagus, Land O Lakes butter and 5 cans ofCampbells Chicken Noodle Soup. This would provide 20 ‘Boxtop’ coupons per month. Within a year, times 12, one couldcollect 240 of these coupons.

Now, imagine that 1000 households out of 3000 couldparticipate. Multiplying by 240,that is 240,000 coupons times tencents each, without increasingtaxes, our town could provide$24,000 for the schools.

That could mean five smartboards for five classrooms or itcould mean nearly 50 computers

to outfit an entire school. Please consider being a part of

such a campaign. Look for thesespecial marked General Mills prod-ucts, clip the little Box Top couponand bring them to the schools. It isbetter to bring them once a month, since now they have deadlines marked

on them. Box Tops submitted after theirprinted expiration date are considered void

and will not be honored. Thank you!

Got Wood? ..... Be Prepared!by Matt Gagner, President Advantage Enterprises Inc.

This year has been a very busy year for firewood as ahome heating source. Across the state firewood dealershave experienced a heavy call volume leading to a shortageof dry firewood. It is important to note when burning fire-wood, that you want a seasoned/ dry hardwood. A lot ofhome owners call for a wood delivery, and expect the woodto burn, the day of delivery, only to find that the wood is stillwet, and burns poorly. Unlike oil, or natural gas, which isready to go, chances are your wood may still need to beprepared.

You must remember this, firewood dealers store theirwood outside, and even if the wood has been cut and split fora year or more, the pieces of wood in the center and bottomof their wood pile may not dry out. Also some wood dries outfaster than others, your "White Wood" such as maple andash, will dry out much faster than oak or hickory. One of thebiggest mistakes we see, is when a homeowner stacks thewood in a garage before it is properly dried out. Manygarages are not heated, and tend to hold the moisture in the

Wood stoves can be functional and efficient. This model showsa casserole cooking while the stove is warming the room. Theplacement of the stove in the room delivers heat more efficientlythan the models inside of a fireplace.

wood, although this keeps the wood out of the elements, thewood will NOT dry out because there is not enough air flow.A dehumidifier in the garage will help this situation.

Here are some suggestions to ensure burning firewoodproperly, Make sure your wood is hardwood. Get your woodwell in advance, at least 6 months if you purchase seasonedwood/dry wood, or 1 year if the wood is green. Firewood hasa shelf life of two to three years so its ok to have extra.Stack the wood in a well ventilated area, and leave somespace in between the wood when stacking. Cover the top ofthe stacked wood, but not the sides, for air flow. The sooneryou get the wood stacked, the more seasoned it will become.Bring the wood you intend to burn, into a heated room for atleast a week, before you burn (longer is better). Do not buywood and expect it to burn perfectly the day of delivery, youmay be disappointed, Remember, this is New England andyou will need to be prepared.

Last year, Bay Path decided to switch their approach tosummer reading. Instead of giving the students a list of books,it was decided to have the entire school read the same bookfor the summer reading assignment. Teacher Marc Andersonhelped initiate this new approach and is nothing less thanelated at the success of the program.

This approach included any faculty and staff who wantedto participate. What the school was looking for was some-thing that would be of high interest for both adults and youngadults. After talkiing with several teachers and librarians inthe area, it was decided that the novel Unwind by NealShusterman would be the best choice.

As a result, this year it was found that more studentswere involved than everbefore. They spoke veryhighly of the novel, andthere were some greatdiscussions about the book.

After looking atinformation about theauthor, Neal Shusterman, they found out that he wasgoing to be in the area forthe NCTE conference inNovember. Superintendent,John Lafleche, agreed thatit would be a great idea to

have him come and speak to the students, and after contact-ing him, arrangements were made for a date to have himcome to the school to speak. He addressed each of the fourgrade levels, freshman through senior for about an hour, followed by a book signing for the students.

Lori Belton from Barnes and Noble brought an assort-ment of his novels for the kids to purchase if they chose.

Overlook Craft Fair Draws a CrowdSaturday, November 23 was a day of Craft Fairs, as

shoppers could travel the circuit and visit three locations andstill have time to stop for lunch. At the Overlook on MasonicHome Road, there were over 50 tables filled with a variety ofmerchandise to allow you to find that special unique gift.

At this fair, a senior at Shepherd Hill had her ‘business’already on a roll, selling gourmet cupcakes. The group ofladies on the opposite page said that these nuts were like noothers as they were selling specialty cashews. Eric Meskuswas willing to explain the complete process of his woodbowls and other items. Starting from blocks glued together, toturning them on a lathe and sanding, applying coats of finish-ing oils and waxing to give them the beautiful finish.

Many of these crafters, doing their favorite hobby, havemade by hand an item not to be found elsewhere. Often, thevalue of the raw materials and the labor of love far exceedthe selling price. This is what Craft Fairs are about. OnDecember 7, there will be one more such opportunity at theCharlton Senior Center.

Schools Get Grant from Cable AccessAt the Charlton Cable Access Committee meeting on

September 20, 2013 the committee voted to authorize theTown Administrator, Robin Craver to offer a grant to theDudley-Charlton School District for expanded Cable Access.

As a result, the School Committee voted to accept thegrant of $25,000 for the Cable Services to provide the tapingand programming of school district events.

The endeavor is intended to develp more programmingfor the educational channels provided to residents of thetown. Drew Anderson, who currently holds the only paidposition for Charlton Cable, will be able to expand coveragefor school related events through the taping and broadcast.

In addition, he would be available for teaching andtraining individuals in the school environment studio produc-tion and camera work. Funds in the grant may be available toprovide additional video equipment to the schools and makingvideo production a part of the curriculum.

For advanced students, the opportunity to borrow equip-ment for covering specific events or to develop curriculummaterials for the schools would be there. It is hoped thatsome students may be able to tape sports events, schoolevents or creative programming with the camera equipmentprovided free.

In addtion to broadcasting the events, Drew will be ableto provide the additional service of archiving the programsand making them accessible over the internet on demand. This means that residents may go to TV Charlton and searchfor the program of their choice, click on it and watch itremotely over the internet.

So, if mom or dad are at work or away on business, theycan still see their children via the internet.

Previously, in March of 2012, the Cable Access donateda complete studio to the Charlton Middle School, whereRichard Earle teaches video production and works with thestudents to produce a ‘morning show’ for the school. Richardalso tapes the Dudley-Charlton School Committee meetingswhich is subsequently broadcast over Charlton TV.

Visit: www.tvcharlton.com for the program listings.

The students at the Heritage School in grades two, threeand four are putting their hearts into a effortto help those in need. They are collectinggifts to fill shoe boxes to deliver packages toothers.

Thinking of the children around theworld, who may be less able to affordChristmas gifts, the entire school embarkedon an effort to make it happen.

The school goal was to collect 100boxes of gift items by category such as thefollowing:

• Toy: dolls, trucks, jump ropes, balls, dolls, kazoos, har-monicas, yo-yos, stuffed animals, etc.

• School Supplier: pens, pencils, markers, crayons, paper, coloring books, picture books, calculators, stamps and inkpads, etc.

• Hygiene Items: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in aplastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc.

• Miscellaneous: T-shirts, socks, hair clips, toy jewelry, sunglasses, flashlights (with extra batteries),a personal note or picture.

Well, not only did the Heritage studentsalready meet their goal, but they alreadysurpassed it by collecting enough for 112Boxes!

Add to this, the students collected enough‘feather’ money to cover the shipping coststo deliver these boxes.

Feather money was a unique idea to‘build’ a costume to be worn to school by a

teacher before Thanksgiving by a teacher voted by thestudents for the task. The donation cost per feather was $1.

Students were excited to see their teacher walk aroundas a ‘turkey of the day’ and collected nearly $800 to pay forshipping. With 252 votes, Physical Education teacher, DavidDeremian, was overwhelming elected to wear the turkeycostume!
