HAPPY RAMADAN GREETING to All our Muslim brethren, their families & children.

It is both a privilege and an honor to address you this morning as the chairman of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation and to speak to you about the Foundation. Our Foundation. Rotary’s charity. Indeed, Rotary’s only charity.

Most of the great foundations in the world have been created by powerful and rich families, but our Foundation has been created by the giving and the goodwill of thousands of Rotarians, just like you. This is why we are proud to call itour Foundation.

And we should be proud of our Foundation, for each day millions of people are touched by the magic of Rotary, only made possible by the service and dedication of Rotarians throughout the world just like yourselves, who have seen the need and responded by supporting our charity.

Our Rotary Foundation is the engine that drives the Rotary machine. Many of the projects carried out by clubs and districts are Foundation-aided programs.

The future of Rotary and our Foundation will not be shaped at the headquarters in Evanston, but by each and every Rotary club and district working to assist those in their communities and communities in other lands whom they may never see but for whom they know there is great need.

At the start of this Rotary year I set five Foundation goals for the year. The first goal was to continue to work toward the elimination of polio. We have much to be proud of in our

efforts to rid the world of this dreadful disease — Rotary members have contributed over $1.3 billion, which has allowed Rotary and its partners to immunize over 2.5 billion children. The South East Asia region has been certified as polio-free, and there have been no new cases of polio reported from Nigeria since July of last year.

While we are this close, we are not yet there. Polio is still endemic in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria.

In each country we face challenges based on fear and

TexT of TrusTee Chair’s speeCh To The 2015 roTary ConvenTiondistrust. We cannot let up on our efforts, for children everywhere are still at risk until polio is gone. We cannot undo all the good work that has been done in the past. We can, we must, we will eradicate the poliovirus from the face of the earth.

The second goal was to support Rotary’s own and only charity — The Rotary Foundation — through our continued giving. I am pleased to tell you that, thanks to your generous support, this year we could see the highest amount ever contributed to the Annual Fund.

Last year our Annual Fund reached almost $117 million. This year, if our contributions continue at the normal June rate, we can top that figure to make it the highest ever. So please, when you return to your clubs and districts, ensure that your contributions are sent in before the 30th of June.

I am also pleased to tell you that this year, we reached a very important milestone in our contributions to the Endowment Fund of The Rotary Foundation. The Endowment Fund’s gifts and commitments, thanks to the generosity of so many Rotarians, has now reached $1 billion. The spendable earnings from the Endowment Fund will provide nearly $13 million of direct financial support next Rotary year, more than double the amount five years ago.

Let us remember that when we give to our Foundation, we are not sending cash to Evanston. We are helping a blind man to see, a polio victim to walk, a child to grow to adulthood healthily, a student to become educated, and a family to have enough food to eat.

In my time as a past president of Rotary International and the current chairman of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation, my wife, June, and I have been privileged to witness many acts of service carried out by Rotarians.

Let me give you just three of these many acts of service, in different parts of the world.

In India we visited the Jaipur Foot Center, where artificial limbs were being fitted to allow the wearer to walk again unaided. These new artificial limbs are helping polio victims and others to work, to lead a normal life, to be self-sufficient.

In Hungary we visited a hospital where a young girl was recovering from a heart operation carried out by a Rotary volunteer and funded by a Rotary district in America, working with the Gift of Life program. I can still see the look on the face of the little girl’s mother. Her family had been given the greatest gift — the gift of life to their daughter.

In Malawi we visited a remote village where a water pump had been installed, and we saw how this had

improved life in the village beyond all recognition. The villagers now have clean water, preventing disease.

The children and women no longer have to walk for hours each day to carry water. At the village school, where June distributed pencils to the children — something that they had never possessed for themselves — they were anxious to show us the improvements in the school facilities, which had been carried out by Rotarians.

They are perhaps small examples to us, but life-changing to them.

The third goal was to ensure the progress of our new grants.

All new systems take time to become established, but it would appear that Rotarians are embracing the new concept of larger, sustainable projects.

Over 400 district grants and over 600 global grants have been awarded so far this year.

The Trustees are conscious of obtaining the views of Rotarians and are seeking their observations on the new grants program so that they can be considered when a review is made in the 2015-16 Rotary year.

The fourth goal was to foster world understanding, goodwill, and peace by promoting and publicizing the Rotary Peace Centers program.

It is surely the wish in all our hearts that there is peace in our troubled world.

Our Rotary Foundation is endeavoring to advance this with the establishment of Rotary Peace Centers in various parts of the world. I have had the privilege of visiting five of the six centers and have been most impressed by the caliber of the students. Since the program began in 2002, 889 peace fellows have been engaged in 18 different countries in various capacities. Currently 79 fellows are earning their master’s degree

at the centers in England, Australia, the United States, Japan, and Sweden and 22 fellows are earning professional certificates at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand.

This year saw the largest application pool to date, with 312 endorsed applications from 85 countries. The 100 selected fellows represent 38 countries, and more than 50 percent of them reside in low-income countries. We should be encouraged to see that this imaginative program is expanding, for it is surely most pertinent in these troubled times.

The fifth and final goal was to emphasize that the future health of the Foundation is in all our hands.

The real work of Rotary is carried out by individual Rotarians in their clubs, for the club is the heart of Rotary.

In the words of Martin Luther King, “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”

So let our hearts be large enough to support the programs of our Rotary Foundation. Let our hands be busy enough to carry out these programs, and let our minds be wise enough to support those programs with our giving.

Whether Rotary will thrive or whether it will falter, whether our service will mean much to many or little to few, whether Rotary is known with respect or seen as a relic of days gone by, all this is up to you.

If we truly intend to Light Up Rotary, if we truly wish to do justice to those who have come before us, if we truly intend to achieve everything of which we are capable, we will rely every day on the strength of our Foundation.

And the strength of the Foundation is in your hands.

Thank you. John Kenny Trustee Chair 2014-15.

Editor’s NoteDear Rotarians, Anns and Annets,It is time for the RC Kazhakuttom to celebrate. A week long anticipation on the

Rotary District Award Nite at C. Kesavan Memorial Hall, Kollam, on Sunday 14 June 2015 culminated into our Club receiving abundance of appreciation and awards to reflect the hard work our President, Secretary and each of our Rotarian put in during the Rotary year 2014-15.

While we continue to maintain the 5 Star Status of our Club in the District for a consecutive period of 3 years which is not easy, we also were appreciated and applauded for having received the coveted District Awards like the Best Club, Best President, Best Secretary and best bulletin of District 3211. Our President and Secretary worked very hard to qualify these commendable positions and we all jointly congratulate them on this achievement.

As Editor of RC Kazhakuttom Club, I also feel very happy that our Weekly Bulletin is adjudged as The Best Weekly Bulletin in the District 3211. I feel happy that my efforts in putting together our weekly bulletin reaped reward at the end of the year. For this I received immense support from our President, Secretary and many of our rotarians who contributed handsomely with articles of different nature, jokes and quotes to light up our Bulletin. Some of our Annets also sent in sketches, quotes and jokes. I thank all of you for these contributions.

All in all, I once again wish to emphasize that our Club - Rotary Club of Kazhakuttom - is a great Club and I wish it the very best, going forward. I am sure our President Elect Rtn. Meenakumaran Nair with the support of Secretary elect Rtn. Dr SH Anilkumar and the team of office bearers will take steps to take our club to greater heights and light up Rotary. As our AG for the year 2015-16 is a member of our own Club, this will also help immensely in building up the Club to new heights.

Well, CONGRATULATIONS my fellow Rotarians for the great achievement, and best wishes for the new Rotary Year 2015-16 and beyond.

Here is an excerpt from our President Rtn. Jerry Fernandez’ email message to the Club members today which in nutshell show how deeply he appreciated the achievements and his desire to share the success with us all:

    Quote Dear Rotarians,

We could bag altogether 33 awards this year including Best club, Best President, Best Secretary, Best Bulletin, RI Presidential citation, India National Polioplus Society of RI, IRYLA, A Bus Stop Shelter, Limb Camp and Limp Distribution @ Philippines, Exemplary Club Website and Five Star rating. No wonder our combined efforts have been appreciated by the District. I extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for your support to me for taking the club to all time heights during my President ship and for having lighted up Rotary.President.Rtn. Rotary is releasing $40.3 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, three countries where the dis-ease has never been stopped. The funds will help build on gains Rotary and its partners have been making in the fight to eradicate polio. Nigeria hasn’t seen a polio case since 24 July and the World Health Or-ganization could remove it from the list of polio-endemic countries as soon as Septem-ber if no cases are reported. Nigeria would have to go another two years without a case to be certified polio-free.But the progress is fragile, and much work remains to reach the goal of a polio-free world. Rotary’s funds announced this week include $9.9 million in Nigeria; $12.2 million in Pakistan, and $2.3 million in Afghanistan. In addition, the money will support immu-nization activities in countries still at risk in-cluding Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Repub-lic of Congo, Ethiopia, Niger, Somalia, and South Sudan.

  • Dear Rotarians, Anns and Annets,

Once again I am going to speak about the highest standards of perfor-mance of our club. The installation ceremonies and the commencement of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations organized on 17th June 2015 at Techno Park Club House was another illustration of our unity, commitment and solidari-ty. All the members of the Club have cooperated in mind and spirit to make the functions wonderful. President Elect Rtn.Adv.Meenakumaran Nair de-serves our praise and congratulations for taking leadership to deliver desired outcomes from the programs. The programs were marked by the presence of very high dignitaries of the District 3211 such as District Governor Rtn.Major Donor K.S.Sasi-kumar, Past District Governor Rtn.MPHF. Reghunath and District Governor Nominee Rtn.Major Donor Dr.John Daniel. Moreover, a large number of Rotary leaders from other clubs have partic-ipated in the programs. The venue arrangements, food and fellowship were done with a classic touch. Everything was possible for us only because we stood strongly bound to make things hap-pen as we desired.

Presidents may come and go. But, the Rotary movement and the Club have to go on forever. Each President will definitely leave a mark of distinction. Our Club has been fortunate enough to get real leaders to take the club ahead year by year. I welcome our beloved new President and wish him all the best to lead the Club successfully during the next year. I also request all our member Rotarians to give your unconditional support to the new team as you have stood firmly with me last year.

Leadership in modern times is a challenge. Human lives become more meaningful when we face challenges with added energy and positive thoughts. Acknowledging that there will be chal-lenges and problems, we are sure that we will overcome them. I wish you success in whatever you do.

As all our rotarians know, this is the Holy Month of Ramadan when all our Muslim brethren ob-serve day long fast. On this occasion, I wish all our Muslim brethren, their families and children a Happy Holy month of Ramadan. May Allah bless you all and fulfill your wishes.

  • I came across this summary of entrepreneurship which is very valuable to young men who are starting up their own business. This article gives out some clear guidelines on what is entrepreneurship, its meaning, risks and rewards. I believe all our young Rotarians and Anns as well as Annets would like to have a glimpse of it. This is written by a young an independent financial professional Sucharita Kumar. She writes regularly on Start-ups, entrepreneurship etc., and is a self employed financial consultant.

the Must-haves for entrepreneursIn today’s changing times, entrepreneurs need to be well-equipped when they launch their enterprise and here are Sucharita’s 10 tips to help you find more success:

    1. Do not lose focus - Keep your vision in sight and stay confident.

    2. Perseverance - Keep learning more, generating new ideas and staying up-to-date with research and technology.

    3. Be ready to know that assumptions made in the business plan may or may not work. Hence keep

tRustee ChAIR’s MessAge - APRIl 2015your plans flexible and take ideas and suggestions for improvement.

    4. Own up - Be responsible for mistakes and more importantly learn from them.

    5. In the initial years, stick to your core competency - do not digress from your expertise.

    6. Learn to delegate. There is a cost associated with delegation but keep it minimal, and let the other party also make mistakes and learn from it.

    7. Entrepreneurs must keep a work-life balance, must be smart workers and should be able to let go.

    8. Simplify things - Don’t complicate issues and don’t take things personally.

    9. Maintain good health and keep up the energetic spirit in the work place.

    10. Keep your family in the loop. Be transparent with them and get their support.

Stay...I pulled into the crowded parking lot at the local shopping centre and rolled down the car windows to make sure my Labrador Retriever Pup had fresh air.

The driver of a nearby car, a pretty young blonde, (had to be!) gave me a strange look and said,

She was stretched full-out on the back seat and I wanted to impress upon her that she must remain there. I walked to the curb backward, pointing my finger at the car and saying emphatically, “Now you stay. Do you hear me?”

“Stay! Stay!” Why don’t you just put it in ‘Park’?
