As she walked along, she began to think that these clay spheres she was carrying were probably not worth anything and so she began throwing them one by one into the surf. Aſter most had been emped from the sack, she dropped one accidently onto a rock at her feet as she pulled it out. It broke in two revealing a gemstone inside – the most exquisite jewel she had ever seen. Amazed by this she then took out more of the spheres and cracked them open on the rock to find that inside each one was a gem. Her heartbeat faster as she realised the worth of what she had so far revealed. But then her heart sank when she remembered that she had already thrown three quarters of these clay spheres into the ocean not knowing that each held a wonderful treasure. The Christmas story the gospels share with us can be regarded as a wake-up call for us in terms of challenging us to consider more deeply what we should value in others. We can be quite insensive and dismissive of people at mes. We oſten base our judgement of someone on outward appearances- we see the external clay vessel. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. It isn’t always beauful or sparkling so we discount it. We see that person as less important than someone more beauful or stylish or well known or wealthy. But we have not taken the me to find the treasure hidden inside that person by God- we fail to recognise the human heart that beats within, a heart like our own with needs and feelings and rights. Every human being has the right to be regarded and loved, and living this as people of hope, who want to spread hope to others, means keeping this at the forefront of our minds in our dealing with others. In this season of Advent, it’s our me to think about the coming of Jesus among us – and he presents to us in the most vulnerable human form – that of an infant – naked and poor in a stable. He is present in the hearts of all those we meet, even when they don’t even realise it themselves. This is God’s strong message to us at Christmas – at the core of all our beings this is who we are – everyone has the heart and beauty of that baby in the manger and therefore has the hope of growing to fullness in the love of God. We farewell Dr Natasha Mayne (4 years), Mr John Pendall (23 years), Mrs Kathleen Rowe-Whiteley (37 years), Ms Kathryn Feeney (9 years), Mr Benjamin Greenup (9 years) and Ms Bethany de Villiers (5 years). We thank them for their contribuon and wish them well in their new ventures. I would like to wish all in our community a very happy and holy Christmas and an enjoyable summer break. 2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE2020 YEAR OF HOPE - A LIGHT TO OUR PATH

Dear Parents and Carers

As the academic year draws to a close, we have much to reflect on in this “Year of Hope”. What a fortuitous pillar for us to select in the year of 2020. I was touched by the ceremonies of last week as we celebrated the achievements of the girls across academic, cultural and sporting pursuits at our Annual Thanksgiving Celebration. It was, as you know, held at the College and it was special to

see the girls recognised in front of the entire school. At the end of that event the students formed our traditional guard of honour to farewell the Year 12 students in our traditional manner. The Year 12 girls then gathered on Hogan Place and threw their hats in the air for the last time.

We were blessed with fine weather the following day when the Year 12 girls and their parents/carers gathered for an outdoor Mass and cocktail function at the College. There were many people involved in making this a special event and I would like to thank both staff and students who contributed to the success of this event. It is always a pleasure to see the growth of the girls from the time they join us in Year 7 as usually shy little girls to witness their development over six years into the young women they become. Every girl has her own journey and every journey has its own challenges. I hope that their time at St Rita’s has assisted them in becoming strong resilient young adults who can cope with the ups and downs of life. I hope too that their faith will be an anchor and a source of strength and comfort as their journeys continue.

In surroundings that in today’s language would be described as squalid, a young baby lay in the arms of his mother who had just given him birth. The father and mother of the child had to make do with the rough shelter of a barn because there were no rooms left in the nearby inns of the area. On such appearances this situation did not seem to have stood out as something special – but it was an event so profound that it has shaped the lives of billions of people over thousands of years ever since. The story of Christ’s birth in Luke’s gospel projects a deep message of how salvation involves having our world order turned upside down. This infant narrative in Luke’s gospel sets the scene for the rest of the story of Jesus, and God’s plan of salvation. It is a proclamation in essence about beholding hope in the ordinary and finding richness, not in the earthly treasures we so often and wrongfully seek to possess, but in the human hearts of all those around us.

I’m reminded of a story I once heard about a woman who was walking along a shoreline and came upon a cave worn into the rockface. On entering the cave, she found stashed in a far corner a hessian bag which had inside small clay spheres. She picked up the sack and took it with her as she continued her walk along the beach. As she walked along, she began to think that these clay spheres she was carrying

were probably not worth anything and so she began throwing them one by one into the surf. After most had been emptied from the sack, she dropped one accidently onto a rock at her feet as she pulled it out.

We can be quite insensitive and dismissive of people at times. We often base our judgement of someone on outward appearances - we see the external clay vessel. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. It isn’t always beautiful or sparkling so we discount it. We see that person as less important than someone more beautiful or stylish or well known or wealthy. Every human being has the right to be regarded and loved, and living this as people of hope, who want to spread hope to others, means keeping this at the forefront of our minds in our dealing with others.

2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE2020 YEAR OF HOPE - A LIGHT TO OUR PATH

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDENTSMs Catherine Allen

2020 is nearly over. It has been a year that no one in our world anticipated. I would like to thank everyone for their support, generosity, sharing and agreement to ‘pivot’ and embrace the many changes that 2020 imposed. I heard one of our Seniors comment on their good fortune in this year. In our Year of Hope, they reflected on how lucky they were to be at St Rita’s, to be in a world where they each had their own device, to be working with teachers who supported them to do and be their best. They knew students who struggled to learn at home, without the internet and without devices. It was a gracious and mature reflection that heartened me. There are often comments made about the sense of entitlement that ‘youth’ have. We work with wonderful students who see their fortune and are determined to be ‘women of action’ and make their world a better place. We work in partnership with families and much of this comes from the values taught at home. It is always our pleasure and privilege to build on these and offer opportunities for action to take place.

May God grant you the light in Christmas, which is faith; the warmth of Christmas which is love; the radiance of Christmas

which is purity; the righteousness of Christmas, which is justice; the belief in Christmas, which is truth; the all of Christmas,

which is Christ.

Semester 2 Academic Transcripts will be available in MySRC for parents to download from 3:00pm on Friday 4 December and print if they wish. They will remain in the student’s MySRC profile until they leave the College. For further detail around individual tasks throughout the Semester, please refer to the subject in MySRC. For Year 11 students, the report is based on Unit 2 work.

It has been a truly unique year and I know that all our community are looking forward to a rest and relaxing break. Thank you to all our amazing staff and students! You have displayed such resilience and positivity throughout this challenging year. We have learnt many ways to work more efficiently which we will no doubt continue to utilise next year.

I hope that all students, staff and their families have an opportunity to reconnect with family who they may have been separated from this year. May our Lord bless you and your family this Christmas and I pray for your safe return to St Rita’s in the new year.

This Sunday, 29 November, Christian Churches around the world will begin to celebrate the season of Advent. This is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. It is literally translated from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming” where Christians anticipate the coming of Christ from two perspectives – the ancient longing for the coming of the Messiah and by being alert for His Second Coming.

Our College community will celebrate our Christmas Mass on Friday. As the readings this Sunday relate to the Old Testament patriarchs, the first candle to be lit is the Candle of Hope. The second Sunday’s readings tell of the prophesy of Christ’s birth in a manger and so this candle is called the Candle of Bethlehem. These candles are both purple. On the third Sunday of Advent a pink candle is lit, marking the joy of the shepherds. The readings for the fourth Sunday relate to the annunciation of Christ’s birth, so the candle is known as the Angel’s Candle.

And so it is with joyful anticipation that we await the coming of the Messiah. The season of Advent and subsequent season of Christmas remind us that Jesus remains a powerful living presence amongst and within us. There are many messages we learn from the Christmas story, the main message is that if we want to know about God, we look to Jesus. If we want to know what God wants us to be, we look to Jesus. Without the Christmas story, quite simply, we would know much less about God.

We pray that this season we might accept, as Joseph did; take up challenges, as Jesus did; and say ‘yes’ to serving others, as Mary did. May God bless our community over the Christmas period.

The Online Boutique is open 24/7 and purchases made over the holiday period will be available for collection after 11:00am during the week commencing 18 January 2021.

Each student is expected to maintain high standards of personal appearance and it is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that the uniform is being worn each day in accordance with the College regulations. In brief:

• The formal dress is to be mid knee in length and clean. Hems should be neat and secure and not hanging at any point.

• Socks and Shoes should be clean. Shoes should have the foot fully enclosed with no holes, well-polished and laces secure.

• Hats should be clean, in good shape, and bands not fraying severely.• The College blazer is compulsory in Terms 2 and 3 for Years 10-12 students.

Satchels are NOT to be used to/from school. The velcro from the satchel will create pilling on the formal dress if the flap of the satchel is left open and allowed to rub against the dress. The garment will get to the stage where replacement will be the only option if this is allowed to happen.

• The Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments Policy is on MySRC/Parent Services/Our College and Community/Policies.

• QCE and QCIA Policy and Procedures Handbook v1.2:6 at this link. • All medical reports should be on the AARA Confidential Medical Report. It is

available for download on MySRC/Parent Services/Curriculum/Curriculum Forms and Documents.

• The document must be dated after 1 January 2021 and must be signed and dated on the front page by both the student and parent/carer before it can be actioned by the College.

• For students in Years 10, 11 and 12, in 2021 the student’s LUI number must also be stated on the document.

• The medical report must be completed by a relevant medical specialist or psychologist who is not related to the student or employed by the College. SPORTSwimmingWith the first half of the Swimming and Water Polo seasons coming to an end it’s time for everyone to take a little breather. Swimming will continue through until Friday 18 December 2020 at the normal times, and we encourage all swimmers to continue training up until the break to maintain fitness and technical gains made over the last few Terms:

For swimmers heading to Water Polo State titles at the end of January this will be a great time to hit the water again to get a few weeks of training in before a busy week of games. For those that are looking to compete at CaSSSA in 2021, it will be important to start training ASAP as the season ramps up very quickly once we return to school. The 2021 CaSSSA Swimming Carnival is scheduled for the 11 March 2021 (Week 7) and we are looking forward to being really competitive again this year.

Swim Camp is scheduled for Sunday 24 - Tuesday 26 January. It will take place at the Runaway Bay Sports Centre on the Gold Coast. The cost will be approximately $250. Further information about Camp will be sent out over the next few days.

Thank youAs this will be my final Verbis article, I would like to thank those staff, parents including the Sports Subcommittee, external coaches and students who have participated or assisted the sport program at St Rita’s over my past 23 years. I will be retiring from St Rita’s with many fond memories of sport and teaching moments and I wish the school and all St Rita’s community members the best for the future. I also wish the incoming Director of Sport, Mr Dane Robinson, all the best as he leads St Rita’s sport to new and higher levels. I will be watching with interest the continued rise of the ‘brown and white’.
