Experience, Research, Mentorship… S U C C E S S!

The beginning of this story might sound familiar to most of you. In fact, you might be asking yourself, are they speaking about me? Dr. Pedroza met Dr. Tatum eighteen years ago during a lecture on Sinus Augmentations. Im-pressed with Dr. Tatum’s comprehen-sive approach to the surgical and re-storative treatment, he listened in-tensely telling himself, “I want more!” After the program, he knew what had to be done. Confidently, he walked up to Dr. Tatum and said, “I want to learn from you.” The next three years con-sisted of four two week trips to St. Pe-tersburg, Florida. Acquiring adequate experience is the first piece of our puz-zle. Dr. Pedroza’s thirst for knowledge did not stop there. He has attended an academic program in clinical research at the School of Medicine at the Uni-versity of Puerto Rico. This post doc-torial masters program in clinical re-search was in conjunction with the National Institute of Health and the Mayo clinic. The final puzzle piece has now been put into place. An intense training experience in which close men-torship by Dr. Tatum and Dr. Pedroza, supported by a strong team of oral sur-geons and restorative dentists, is being offered as a key element in our pursuit of success. The mission of the program is to provide a comprehensive didactic

and clinical curriculum leading to an accredited certificate of train-ing in comprehensive implantology know as NIRISAB. (Natural Im-plants Restored in Stable Alveo-lar Bone) The program includes over 360 hours of continuing educa-tion, presented in ten sessions dur-ing a ten month period. During the first two modules, students have been able to participate in ten live surgeries and take part in extensive discussions on each case. Also, they have participated in advanced IV sedation techniques, and have started to establish the basis of clinical research. Please contact Ta t um S u rg i ca l f o r mo r e information on upcoming class dates and course curriculum.

In March, 2009 the AAID gave Dr. Pedroza their Maxi-Course® Accreditation, Congratulations!

“Twenty-one years after I placed my first implant, I am thrilled to

pass on the knowledge and experience that granted me the

opportunity of a specialized practice, and the awesome

responsibility of offering my patients revolutionary and life

changing dental choices.” Dr. Jose Pedroza

San Juan, PR

“Personal mentorship, guid-ance, and repeated hands on clinical experiences are essen-tial to the cultivation of an out-standing Oral Implantologist. Dr. Hilt Tatum and Dr. Jose Pedrosa have put together an extraordinary program which is the embodiment of these training principles. Simply put, this is the ultimate learning experience for those seeking to achieve the highest levels of skill and com-petency in Implant Dentistry.”

Volume 2, Issue 1

Tatum Institute USA is in full swing with the return of Dr. Richard A. Borgner. We are sure that those of you who know Dr. Borgner personally or have ever attended one of his lectures, will agree that listening to him is a wonderful experience. His gentle demeanor provides a comfortable atmosphere for the students, whereas his extensive academic skills and hands on approach provide a true learning experience. Dr. Borgner received his dental degree from Case Western University in 1972 and has had a special interest in implant dentistry for over thirty years. He completed his post graduate training in oral implant

reconstruction at Harvard University, Brookdale Medical Center (New York), Medical College of Georgia (Augusta), and received a graduate certificate from the Dept. of Prosthodontics at Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry (California). He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Implantology and an Honored Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Borgner mentored under Dr. Tatum since the mid 80’s and continues to teach Dr. Tatums’ philosophy of treatment. Dr. Borgner became a partner at The Implant Reconstructive Center. When Dr. Tatum’s health re-quired him to retire, Dr. Borgner provided the surgical support for the center until his own retirement from active practice in 2006. Due to the difficulty of gaining “hands on” education in the field of implant dentistry, Dr. Borgner has developed courses to allow practitioners to become more comfortable in managing hard and soft tissue concerns that one encounters in treating the implant patient from diagnosis to completion of the restorative phase of treatment.

Tatum Institute is very fortunate that Dr. Richard Borgner has

agreed to be our Educational and Surgical Director. His past history

as a classroom teacher has allowed him to develop courses that effectively teach important

basics such as anatomy and physiology to the more advanced

concepts of bi-lateral nerve repositioning and treating complications from sinus

augmentations and bone grafting.

Students enjoyed the hands-on practical utilizing effective

models to accurately represent the human

techniques. They learned Dr. Tatum’s principle of maximiz-ing the use of available bone. Tatum’s specifically designed instruments greatly facilitate the procedures and are used

in the training. Dr. Jarrin commented, “The skills taught

in these classes can be applied in the office the

very next day.”

WELCOME DR. DUNSON

Since graduating Cum Laude with his BS degree in 1987, Dr. Bernee Dunson planted his feet firmly on the ground while his career aspirations soared. Guided by his personal philosophy - education for life - Dr. Dunson has successfully integrated his roles as both master and student while building a flourish-ing, patient-centered and technologically advanced dental practice. From his General Practice Residency at Columbia University at Harlem Hospital to his Oral Implantology Residency at Loma Linda University, Dr. Dunson continues to strive for excellence. He holds himself to high standards not only in his surgical skills and restorative techniques but as a positive role model and mentor to the implant community, his civic organizations and his family.

Dr. Borgner has appointed Dr. Bernee Dunson of Atlanta, Georgia to become the Restorative Director of Tatum Institute International.

News from our Expert Tatum Technician Technique for “4 on the floor” O-ring Re-

tained Overdentures

Once your cast bar with ball post attachments have been placed and your impression for the denture has been taken, you should insert the correct size plastic analogs into the impression before pouring. This impression should be boxed with boxing wax and

Poured in epoxy with mechanical retention embedded in the epoxy. A stone base will be added to it one hour after the epoxy is poured. This epoxy model should stand overnight before separating. After you separate the epoxy model, it should be duplicated in stone, once again adding the correct size plastic analogs to this impres-sion before pouring. This duplicate model is then used to set-up and process the denture. After processing, you will fit and

finish the denture back on the master epoxy model. This will give you the most accurate fitting denture. Also, you should attach your housings with o-rings in them to the base plate in the correct position before adding your wax bite rim to record your bite. This will give you a stable fitting base plate to capture your bite accurately and will also stabilize the try-in as well.
