Comrades, September was another busy month at the Post, and October is the start of the holiday season with the Post’s famous Costume Halloween Party on Saturday, October 29. Members show up in GREAT costumes. Get

your tickets early from the office, it is always SOLD OUT. $30 which includes buffet dining and dancing to Full Spectrum. If you wish to assist in decorating for this fabulous party, call the office, we always need lots of hands to help set up all the ghouls and monsters.

The Navy Birthday Gala, held in conjunction with the Navy League, will be held on Saturday, October 22, tickets sold through the office. You don’t have to be Navy, all military branches are invited.

Veteran’s Day is coming up on November 11 at 11 am. Please show your support of all our Veterans and come to the Post for the ceremony and rifle volley. Box lunches will be served, along with a special Veteran’s Day cake, created by our cake master, Dennis.

It’s starting to get really busy with holiday events. Our Thanksgiving Buffet, Christmas festivities and Newport Harbor Boat Parade are right around the corner. Read the website for all the events coming up. Please reserve early for all these events because seating is limited and always at capacity.

Service Dogs: The Post is adopting policy that will comply with all State requirements regarding Service Dogs while on Post grounds. There are guidelines regarding what is a Service Dog versus Therapy or Comfort Dogs that are not allowed. Please read the signs that will be displayed. The dog must be registered under the guidelines of ADA laws, and, if you bring

a non-service animal to the Post, you will be asked to leave the premises.

We are completing the sound improvements as per the city, with a roll up canvas on the bayside of the Big Top, and overhead sail canvases on the west patio which will eliminate some of the bulky easy-ups that clutter the patio on the weekends. Thankfully the sewer repair is complete for the women’s restroom, which created minimal inconvenience, and the disco ball lights have been updated by Jesse Garcia, just in time for the holiday parties. I will continue to do my best to communicate with my Officers and Executive Board and our 2016-2017 Command Year will be great in every way if everyone does their part.

Membership Renewal: It is $130 for 2017. Start now before the end-of-the-year rush. Come to the office window during business hours and Laurel will handle it.

Thanks to all who came to the Sock Hop and brought socks for the vets at the VA. It’s a great fundraiser for those in need. It was also my birthday so it made for a great party.

Remember: “Veterans First”. Attitude is the Altitude of Success at the American Legion Post 291.

Let’s all work together to make that happen.

For God and Country, Doug Nye, Commander

AMERICAN LEGION POST 291 AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AMERICAN LEGION YACHT CLUB

We have now come to the Holiday Season . . .September ended our Thursday Night Jazz. Thank you Mike McKenna, Tracy Longstreth and Walter Lakota for your unique renditions of old and new Jazz tunes. The tables were filled with dinner guests and there were many dinners served from our kitchen. Dennis, Ulisis and their staff spent many hours preparing for “Jazz On The Bay”, “Under The Stars” on the BigTop Patio. This year

was once again a great success. Thank you all for joining us to help make this another enjoyable event at Post 291.The timing was right on the mark for ending the Thursday Night Jazz and Saturday afternoon on the BigTop Patio as the weather began to cool down on Tuesday, September 13th, before the last Jazz performance. Our Saturday’s on the BigTop Patio have been attended more frequently with each Saturday performance. Some of our best bands began playing for us on Saturday’s instead of Sunday’s and attracted our members and their guests to move to our Saturday afternoon performances. Thanks to you all for helping us with “Crowd Control” by coming to enjoy our entertainment on Saturday rather than Sunday, even though Sunday’s continued to be our biggest day of the week Thursday Night Jazz, as well as Friday evening dinner and dancing, have been very well attended. We now have several new bands to entertain us. Listen has brought in some new current tunes with their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s cover music. Velvet Thunder is bringing in their Motown sounds and wowing the dance crowds on Friday nights. Joni Ross has excited our Friday night crowds with many of her female cover songs, many of them current hit tunes that you may hear on the radio today. Another new band who call themselves the “Flip Out” band has been with us on the BigTop Patio for several weeks now making our 1:00-5:00 Saturday or Sunday afternoons very enjoyable with their renditions of some of our old favorites as well as new current tunes. With that said . . . We continue to have our bands that have been favorites for many years now . . . Don Ross, Dave Alcantar, the Grumps, Daze of Blue, Outplay, Z-Bops, Whiskey Hayride, the Retros and Shenanigans; giving us the Rock-‘N’-Roll favorites; Mike McKenna, Paul Eshelman, Walter Lakota and Tracy Longstreth giving us our Jazz on the Bay with a bit of everything else. The next few months will be packed with Post 291 entertainment. October is one of the “Holiday Celebration” months with the Navy Ball “Navy 241st Birthday”- celebrating “America’s Sailor - 241 Years: Tough, Bold, and Ready”. This is a black-tie-optional event and in previous years our Post 291 celebration has been very well attended as guests dressed for this special occasion in military regalia, tuxedo or suits and the ladies were dressed in evening gowns or cocktail attire appropriate for the Navy birthday party. This years Navy Ball party will be celebrated with one of your favorite bands, Outplay, with Shannon Renee Parks, the singer

AMERICAN LEGION POST 291 AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AMERICAN LEGION YACHT CLUB

It has been a pleasure for me to be providing weekly entertainment for ost

embers and uests for the past two years. After our lections last month I will be continuing as your nd ice ommander for

a third Service ear uly , 0 une 0, 0 . I

have enjoyed every min-ute of these past years, as we have made some improvements on the qual-ity of bands that have been entertaining our embers and their uests while the

bands have made improvements on the music that they play dur-ing the period of time they entertain us at our ost.

or the past two years, as your nd ice ommander, I have been paying close attention to how you have been responding to our bands, as well as, the music that they perform for us and I have been working with these bands to help them understand what you, our embers, would like to have them play for us during that time they are on our stage.

One of the key factors in the choice of music, and how it is performed, has much to do with their choice of equipment. Such as: Amplifiers, Speakers and their vocal sound systems that they bring with them each time they perform. ost of the bands, that are on my list, have been performing music with bands for as much as 50 years. Their play list usually consist of fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, some nineties and some current two-thousands songs. I have been working with all of our bands to not only keep the volume down but also to improve their play lists. As I’m sure that you all know, these bands are accustomed to entertaining us with top ten cover tunes that hit the charts each year. Some of these songs are played by almost every band that performs at our American Legion. Some bands do a Spot On” rendition of these songs and others give a very good vocal and musical performance as they give their best effort.

I have had the good fortune to have been working with some of the top performers in southern alifornia, which by the way, is where most of the musical talent is formed and therefore, found in our country.

As I have been telling you all, I continue to scout-out new bands that I feel will fit the criteria and requirements of the majority of our

embers and as always, lease feel free to give me your thoughts and suggestions for new bands”. That means that I would like to hear from you when the bands are good and making everyone happy to have them with us here at the ost, as well.

To continue with our discussion of bands this last year we heard from Listen”, a band headed up by Arlan who plays Keyboard, guitar and harmonica. The band consists of a keyboard, bass guitar, lead quitar, drummer and a lady that can belt out some blues,

hitney ouston and Soul. This band was suggested by one of our embers during a Sunday afternoon on the igTop atio.

Another new band on our schedule is Shenanigans”. They are always busy entertaining at other venues around the southland and periodically we have the opportunity to have them with us in the

rand all and sometimes on the igTop atio. They are a well rounded band with bass guitar, lead guitar, keyboard, drums and

a singer that can wow us all while they do their renditions of their Top Ten play list.

I am also proud to announce that we will be enjoying music from a another new band that I have discovered, the Joni Ross Band”. oni is the lead singer with vocal cords that will ama e you. oni’s drummer is one of the top drummers in the county and he

sings some top 0 tunes with vigor as he leads the band with his tremendous vital tempo. The bass player is one of our Tuesday afternoon ootenanny regulars and his addition to oni’s band has proven to add an important highlight to their sound. All members of the band are musicians as well as singers so they do a lot of tunes that have beautiful harmony. ertainly a band to get you on your feet and get you some of that exercise that you have wanted.

four days that are planned for our Independence ay, th of uly celebration. e will have a four days that will culminate with one of your favorites, The rumps”.

The past two years that I have been working with the bands and und- aising, Independence ay” has been the very biggest event

of the year for ost . In 0 we had more than ,000 embers and their uests join us for our ancake reakfast and Lunch as they enjoyed festivities in that one day and helped us break an all time

und- aising record for the th of uly. Then in 0 5 that record was broken as almost ,500 embers, uests and public locals joined with us at our days festivities. Our entertainment on the igTop atio was a crowd pleaser and kept many of us on our feet throughout the day and many stayed to observe the evening ireworks Show on the patio as the shows glistened from across ewport arbor from all directions. ou’ll not want to miss it this year. oin us. ave some fun and let’s have another record breaking year . . .

There have been several bands that I have previewed at other performance locations and I have chosen not to bring them into our facility yet as they were not quite ready. There are plans for a isco

ight, egga ight and maybe a rank Sinatra ight. Stay Tuned. Over the next few weeks I will continue with my efforts to bring you new entertainment. So, follow with me through this ewsletter, flyers posted in the bar hall and the Table Tents on each of our tables as you enjoy a fabulous meal from our estaurant or a cocktail from one of our artenders. “See you soon”, “For The Good Of The Legion”,

entertainer that everyone raves about. Shannon has performed all over Orange County and across the U.S, on stage and television, for years and she probably has the best rendition of our National Anthem that I have heard. You will be entertained at this event so come join us and be prepared for a fabulous evening of dancing and more good food from our kitchen staff. All of the proceeds will benefit the Sea Cadets of the El Toro Battalion. The “Halloween Party” will be our next big event with entertainment from Full Spectrum. You have requested Full Spectrum to continue to play for us on this “Scary” night as they always have given us the favorite tunes from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s that became famous in that era, such as: The “Monster Mash” and many others. The GrandHall will be decorated with a Scary Night theme. Everyone who attended in past years made many comments about the beautiful job that Georgia Seiler and her decorations committee has prepared for this night of horror. You should call the office (949.673.5070) to make reservations soon as this is another event that sells-out very quickly. The Social Hour starts at 17:00 and Dinner is served from 17:00-20:00 with the entertainment, Full Spectrum, performing from 18:00-22:00. You should remember that during the winter months we will not be having Thursday Night Jazz or entertainment in the BigTop Patio on Saturday afternoons. In October you will be enjoying the sounds of Listen, the Grumps, Whiskey Hayride, Flip Out and Don Ross on Sunday afternoons from 01:00-17:00 while the Friday night entertainment will be with Joni Ross, Dave Alcantar, Big Hassle and Velvet Thunder.Veteran’s Day will be observed at the Eleventh Hour on the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month (November 11, at 11:00) then our Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on Thursday November 24th with Brunch served from 12:00-16:00. For the last two years we have received very positive comments about this Thanksgiving feast prepared by our kitchen staff. Thank you Dennis, Ulisis and your staff. We’re anticipating another big ham and turkey day with all the “fixens” again this year.I would like to give everyone a “Heads-Up” on planning for December as this is the busiest month of the year . . . Pearl Harbor happened 75 years ago on December 7th, 1941 so there will be a Pearl Harbor Luncheon and observance at Post 291 on Wednesday, December 7th. Our Post 291 Christmas Party will be on Friday, December 9th (reservations only) with the Joni Ross band. The Boat Parade will be hosted by our Son’s of the American Legion Squadron beginning on Wednesday, December 14th and continuing each evening through Sunday December 18th. The event is celebrated by Post 291 and requires reservations only for seating in the View Room, Fireside Room or Patios. Our SAL Squadron will be preparing a menu and hosting the evening events. Always Sold-Out so make reservations. The entertainment will be from 17:00-21:00 with Mike Mckenna Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday while dancing to the music of Dave Alcantar and his band will be your entertainment on Friday the 16th from 18:00-22:00.You don’t want to forget the annual Black-Tie-Optional New Years Eve Party on Saturday, December 31st with a No Host Bar starting at 18:30, Dinner at 19:30, Dancing to the sounds of Full Spectrum from 20:30-00:30.Our Sunday’s are 12:00-16:00 on the BigTop Patio. Some of the entertainment for December will be Z-Bops and Flip Out while Friday nights will feature Joni Ross, the Grumps, Daze Of Blue and Dave Alcantar on the Friday evening of the Boat Parade. With the success of the Frank Sinatra Night in August, we are planning more special Friday night events beginning in January 2017. 8 AUGUST 2016 AMERICAN LEGION

AMERICAN LEGION POST 291 AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AMERICAN LEGION YACHT CLUB

A sad farewell to another fabulous summer season at the Post while we continue our labors of love. Volunteers, who include members of Elks Lodge, Costa Mesa Senior Center and residents at Huntington Landmark, have been busy knitting, crocheting and weaving Cucumel’s Compassionate Carpets for deployment to what

we can only hope are dwindling numbers of homeless veterans before the weather gets the best of them.Five of our 2016 Girls State delegates visited our September General Meeting to share their scrapbooks and experiences with us. Once again, we were reminded that the future is brighter given their participation and your help with this very important program which has been an annual event since 1937. Our biannual Red Cross blood drive is scheduled for Monday, October 10th (Columbus Day). Give the gift of life to your community! It is by far the best donation bang for time given. Money back guarantee and the hot dogs are free! Contact Susan DiFonzo at [email protected] or see the poster for online signup. Walk-ins are welcome!Thursday, November 10th from 4pm-8pm will open up the Post for our annual Holiday Boutique! This is a must attend shopping event with vendors selling all of your favorite and new items. Enjoy raffle drawings, food specials and even a wine tasting. This event is open to the public so please spread the word so we can make this an even more fabulous evening! We are also hoping for a ramp up in donations for the upcoming Holiday Troop Shipping. Open your hearts and bring by new items for our troops overseas. While you are enjoying family and friends during the upcoming holiday season we would love for our heroes to know how proud we are of them and their efforts. The election takes place on Thursday November 17th at our GMM meeting; nominations will also be taken from the floor at this time. Please make plans on attending this very important meeting to vote for the 2017 Officers and Board.

SAIL FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIREDThen on Saturday the 15th of October we will host the annual Sail for the Visually Impaired. This is a very worthwhile event where we team up with our American Legion Post 291 and Women’s Sailing Association of Orange County (WSA-OC) to provide a day of sailing and social activities for the visually impaired. This is one of the most rewarding events of the year, SVI needs volunteers to be escorts, servers, guide dog sitters, etc., etc. Also needed are sailboats; so if would like to be involved on land or sea contact the club by email [email protected] or call (949) 673-5002.Fishing Tournament scheduled for Saturday September 24th had to be canceled due to weather conditions but we do have another one on the calendar for Saturday November 12th please sign up.

12 AUGUST 2016 AMERICAN LEGION

AMERICAN LEGION POST 291 AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AMERICAN LEGION YACHT CLUB

Greetings, As we finish off the third quarter of the year, I am proud to say that the Honor Guard team continues to be successfully fulfilling our mission. The last two months have been a little slower than expected, but so far year to date, we have provided

48 Honor Guard services for our fallen veterans and 19 Color Guard services to events throughout the community. As we move through the month of October, we continue looking forward to the anticipated services and event until the year’s end. November is historically our second busiest month of the year (next to May) because of the many Veteran’s Day celebrations and ceremonies in which we are involved.

While the day is fast approaching, I would like to remind everyone what Veteran’s Day stands for. One common misunderstanding is the confusion of the difference between Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. Very simply stated, Memorial Day is to honor those who have died while serving in our armed forces; while Veteran’s Day is to honor all those who served and survived.

Veteran’s day was originally established as Armistice Day; a day marking the conclusion of the hostilities of WWI that took place during the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month in 1918. In 1919, President Wilson memorialized the first Armistice Day, but it was not recognized as a federal holiday until 1938.

Although the holiday was created to recognize our WWI survivors, Congress acknowledged the need to expand the meaning of the day to recognize Veterans of all conflicts and wars. In 1954, November 11th was officially renamed Veteran’s Day.

Greetings, As we finish off the third quarter of the year, I am proud to say that the Honor Guard team continues to be successfully fulfilling our mission. The last two months have been a little slower than expected, but so far year to date, we have provided

No matter where you spend your time on November 11th, take the time to acknowledge our veterans…and acknowledge each other. Remember the brothers and sisters that served by our sides; those who have gone before us and those who currently serve to protect us. To all of America’s finest men and women, the Newport Harbor Honor Guard team Salutes you and is proud to know that we will forever share that special bond that makes us family.

If you are interested in learning more about the Honor Guard or if you are interested in joining the team; please visit our main website (www.honorguard291.com) or contact the main office at 949-673-5070 ext. 7.
