The Penn Club has just closed its July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009 operating year, and I’m pleased to report that we once again finished “in the black.” This is no small feat in these challeng-ing times, and is a true testament to the value you place on your membership in the Penn Club of New York. The Club is constantly striving to ensure that the value of your membership continues to grow.

Value added programs currently available to Penn Club mem-bers include discounted parking at a local garage, discounted care services through Sitter City, discounted tutorial services through BeSpoke Education, discounted test preparation pro-grams through Kaplan, discounted merchandise at all Brooks Brothers stores, and discounted automobile rentals at Hertz or ZipCar. Information about all of these services is available from our Membership Department at 212.403.6627.

Our most recent addition to our value added initiatives is the introduction of the Penn Club members’ voluntary health insur-ance plan. This is an affinity health insurance plan designed exclusively for active Penn Club members and their qualifying family members. The plan is designed to allow you to purchase health insurance at a fraction of the cost of individually purchased health insurance, or even employer based plans. The Plan became effective on July 1, 2009, and information is avail-able through a link on the Members Only side of our web site, www.pennclub.org. For further assistance, feel free to contact the Membership office at 212.403.6627.

Another great added value of your membership is your affiliation with one of America’s top private clubs. I just received notice that we have once again earned the designation of Platinum Club from the Club Leaders Forum. This designation is awarded to the top 235 of America’s 6,000 private clubs It is recognition that we represent the very best in terms of service, facilities, governance, management, activities and member involvement as reflected in a survey of club board members, general managers and club members at large from across our country. The Platinum Clubs of America award is the club equivalent of the Mobil five star rating. This is the third time in succession that we have earned this designation and you should all be very proud of the part you have played in keeping the Penn Club of New York at the forefront of America’s private clubs.

We are currently in the midst of our membership renewal period, and a great number of our members have already renewed their memberships for the July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010 year. If you have not already renewed your membership, I urge you to do so before you head off for you summer activities. I know you would not want to lose any of the great value that Penn Club membership represents.

My staff and I look forward to being a part of your continuing Penn Club experience, and want to wish you a safe and enjoy-able summer. We hope to see you often at your home-away-from-home in New York.

Social Media 102 Monday, July 20th, 7:00 p.m. In this panel we’ll discuss specific features of social networks that are particularly useful to generate business. How has growing your business online worked in practice across various fields like real estate and law? How do you sepa-rate your personal online presence? And, maybe most importantly, how do you manage the time you spend devoted to social media? Come hear experts speak about how they have leveraged

social networks to increase business.SpeakerS: Andrew Kortina, C’ 05, Betaworks: Andrew Kortina builds social Internet software. Prior to working at Betaworks, Kortina consulted for brands such as MLB and Comedy Central on social media marketing strategy, worked at casual gaming start-up iminlikewithyou.com, and also built several iPhone™ applications.Mike Germano, Carrot Creative: Mike Ger-mano is co-founder and President of Carrot Cre-ative, a new media agency located in DUMBO, NY, or as he calls it, Manhattan’s “Digital District.” Through his work at Carrot Creative, Mike has been able to provide his expertise to leading brands such as MLB.com, MTV, The Onion.com and Unilever providing strategic in-sight on how these companies can enhance their social media presence and online identity.Jay Parkinson, Hello Health: Jay Parkinson is a physician who lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He was trained at Johns Hopkins in preventive

medicine and pediatrics. He realized just what a mess the health care system is, with messy delivery processes and frustrating, expensive reimburse-ment methods and figured the whole thing could change for the simpler. In January of 2008, Jay joined a company called Myca to build his prescription: “a Facebook-like platform that uses technology, from IM to video chat, to restore the traditional doctor-patient relationship that has been lost in today’s high-pressure, high-volume, eight-minute-appointment practice model, which is often blamed for the shortage of primary-care physicians. It’s part electronic medical record, part practice-management system, and part social-net-working site, complete with profiles and photos of doctors and patients, all in a secure environment that complies with federal privacy standards.”$15 per member and $30 per non-member by July 17th, $25 for member walk-ins and $40 for non-member walks-ins. Inter Ivy ProgressiveNetworking Dinner |Tuesday, September 8th, 6:30 p.m. In New York City, it’s easy to meet people, but it’s hard to get to know anyone. Book Group luncheon:olive Kitteridge |by elizabeth Strout (pulitzer prize winner)Monday, September 21st, 12:00 noon. Anyone who gets in the way of olive kitteridge, redoubtable seventh-grade math teacher in Crosby, Maine, had better watch out, for she crashes unapologetically through life like an emotional storm

trooper. She forces her husband, Henry, the town pharmacist, into tactical retreat; and she drives her beloved son, Christopher, across the country and into therapy. But appalling as Olive can be, Strout manages to make her deeply human and even sympathetic, as are all of the characters in this “novel in stories.” Covering a period of 30-odd years, most of the stories feature Olive as their focus, but in some she is bit player or even a footnote while other characters take center stage to sort through their own fears and insecurities. Though loneliness and loss haunt these pages, Strout also supplies gentle humor and a nourishing dose of hope. People are sustained by the rhythms of ordinary life and the natural won-ders of coastal Maine, and even Olive is sometimes caught off guard by life’s baffling beauty. Isabel Katzin leads discussion over a catered lunch.$49 plus tax and gratuity per member and $54 plus tax and gratuity per guest by September 18th at noon, $54 plus tax and gratuity for member walk-ins and $59 plus tax and gratuity for guest walk-ins. Fourth Annual Full House Night |Tuesday, September 29th. All events start at 6:45 p.m. and are followed by open mingling.

Mingle with your favorite Penn Club members and meet some new friends! Here’s how it works: Come to the club on Tuesday September 29th--feel free to bring along your spouse, a co-worker, a friend, or just come yourself--and choose from any of the three events happening at the same time. Surely one of our topics will strike your fancy! After your program is finished, gather with the attendees from the other events and chat over drinks. Conversation is easy when you can compare notes about what you saw and what you should plan on catching next year! The options are: 1) Meet Penn’s Entrepreneurs; 2) Whither Wall Street?; and 3) The “Art” of Selling and Buying Art: Christie’s Comes to the Penn Club!

1) Meet Penn’s EntrepreneursPenn has made a huge impact in the entrepreneurial space. Come listen to this exclusive panel and meet some of our alumni who have struck out on their own and reinvented themselves. Hear their stories and see if you have what it takes to be your own boss and leave Corporate America behind for good.

2) Whither Wall Street?Penn, particularly through Wharton, has made its mark on the financial sec-tor. But last year’s market meltdown, not to mention the collapse of Lehman Brothers and Bear Sterns, has left many of us guessing about what’s next. Come hear what some of our leading Penn alumni players in the financial world have to say about what happened and where they see things headed.

3) The “Art” of Selling and Buying Art: Christie’s Comes To The Penn Club!Veronique Chagnon-Burke, Director of Studies at Christie’s Education New York will come over to meet members and talk art! Among the topics she’ll cover: the role the auction house plays in the current art market, the history of the auction house and its development, and the specific role it plays especially with modern and contemporary art. She’ll also provide information on how to buy artwork and options on how to sell artwork, a big topic with today’s economy. All events are $24 plus tax and gratuity per member and $34 plus tax and gratuity per guest by September 28rd at noon, $34 plus tax and gratu-ity for member walk-ins and $44 plus tax and gratuity for guest walk-ins. Beer Ahoy! Annual All-Ivy Beer Tasting |Thursday, August 13th, 6:30 p.m. In the late 18th century, British sailors with the East India Company brought their favorite October-brewed stock bitter ale with them on the long journeys to the Indian subcontinent. The reputation of this pleasantly copper-hewed brew, later known as India Pale Ale, spread with the trade winds to beer connoisseurs worldwide. Since then, IPAs have been a staple of British pubs and have developed a cult following in the U.S. More recently, these distinctive ales have won wider acceptance among mainstream American beer drinkers. In fact, it’s hard to find any self-respecting nightspot these days without at least one IPA on tap or in the bottle. This year, a hand-picked selection of IPAs will take center stage at our annual beer tasting event. Whether you are a longtime fan or more recent convert, come join us for a fun and frothy tasting of these splendidly bitter ales with a hoppy bite and delicate floral undertones!$32 per person, plus tax and service ($39.48 all-inclusive). For reservations, e-mail [email protected] or fax 212-403-6621 or RSVP online by Thursday, August 13th or until sold out.

Bill Cosby (NY Philharmonic) |Saturday, October 17th, 5:00 p.m. dinner, 7:00 p.m. show. A true legend in entertainment, Bill Cosby is an artist who knows how to entertain and force one to think, all at the same time. During this time he co-starred in a hit television adventure series by the name of I Spy, and his worked earned him three straight Emmy Awards from 1966-1968. He continued his stand-up work, started a family and continued his education. He created a hit cartoon series, Fat albert and the Cosby kids, a series based on his childhood. The series was a big Saturday morning hit for kids, schools were using the show as a teaching tool because of the elements of character that were taught in the show and most important, Bill Cosby used the show to help write his thesis that would eventually help him earn his coveted doctorate degree. The Cosby Show debuted in 1984 and became one of the top TV series of all time. Once again, he created material that was relevant and not simply mindless programming, and did so in a manner that was highly entertaining and humorous. Count on an evening of wonderful comedy done in the unassuming style this man has become legendary for performing. A Bill Cosby show is not simply about comedy.
