We’ve now passed the busy holiday season, and are settling into the depths of the winter months. While activities during the holidays were not quite up to the levels of the past few years, your Club was still a very busy spot and I hope you took time to enjoy some of our festivities. The crowning moment of our December was our Member’s Holiday Party on December 14th. We hosted a record number of 400 reservations, and by all accounts this was the best Holiday Party ever. This annual event has become an increasingly popular event on our mem-bers’ social calendar, and plans are already under way for next December’s Party. I will hope to see you there.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the passing of Christopher Browne, C’69 on December 13th. Chris was the second president of the Penn Club, and an extremely loyal and generous member. He served as president for nine years, and his vision and support were critical to the formation of our Club as we know it today. Chris was a good friend to those of us who had the good fortune to know him, and he will be greatly missed.

It is most heart-warming to report to you that this year’s Penn Club Employees’ Holiday Fund matched last year’s.

This is remarkable in view of the economic challenges that 2009 presented. Your display of appreciation to our staff is a true testament to the high regard and deep af-fection our members have for the Penn Club. On behalf of all of our employees, I want to offer our sincere thanks for your caring generosity.

The post-holiday months are traditionally quieter ones for the Club, and the lingering economic concerns may make them even more so. As we slow down and enjoy the mid-winter months, I want to remind you that the Penn Club continues to offer a great variety of programs, events and services as well as a warm and comfortable refuge from winter’s discomforts. Please take time to peruse this issue of HapPENNings, and see what we have in store for you. The strength of our activities, services and facili-ties continue to contribute to our ongoing status as a Platinum Club of America.

My staff and I look forward to being a part of your con-tinuing Penn Club experience. We hope to see you often at your home-away-from-home in New York.

What is contemporary? |Monday, March 15th, 2010, 6:30 p.m. Senior Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at Penn since 2001, Ingrid Schaffner, will most certainly not answer this big question. Instead, Ingrid will show the variety of ways that artists today ask us to think about what is contemporary. Schaffner is currently organizing Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World), which after ICA (January 14 – June 6, 2010), will travel to San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Her recent exhibitions at ICA include Dirt on Delight: Impulses That Form Clay (with Jenelle Porter and awarded first place for the Best Show in a University Gallery by AICA/USA); Douglas Blau; The Puppet Show (with Carin Kuoni); Karen Kilimnik; Accumulated Vision, Barry Le Va; The Big Nothing (with Bennett Simp-son and Tanya Leighton); Sarah McEneaney; Polly Apfelbaum (with Claudia Gould); The Photogenic: Photography through its metaphors in contempo-rary art and Richard Tuttle, In Parts, 1998–2001. Wolf Hall |by Hilary MantelMonday, March 22nd, noon. In the ruthless arena of King Henry VIII’s court, only one man dares to gamble his life to win the king’s favor and ascend to the heights of political power. England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years, and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. The quest for the king’s freedom destroys his adviser, the brilliant Cardinal Wolsey, and leaves a power vacuum. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell. Cromwell is a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and op-portunist, astute in reading people and a demon of energy: he is also a consummate politician,

hardened by his personal losses, implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph? In inimitable style, Hilary Mantel pres-ents a picture of a half-made society on the cusp of change, where individuals fight or embrace their fate with passion and courage. With a vast array of characters, overflowing with incident, the novel re-creates an era when the personal and political are separated by a hairbreadth, where success brings unlimited power but a single failure means death. Please join us over a catered lunch as Isabel Katzin leads discussion. Isabel holds a Master’s Degree and has studied in the US, Paris, and Israel. For-merly an English and French teacher, she has been a professional book group discussion leader for over 18 years and currently leads 28 groups.$44 plus tax and service charge per member and $49 plus tax and service charge per guest by March 15th at noon, $49 plus tax and service charge for member late reservations and $54 plus tax and service charge for guest late reservations. Wine & Food component Pairing…and A business Dining lesson |March 23rd, 7:00 p.m. Restaurant dining has cer-tainly become a sport in NYC. Gain some insight into some of the rules of this grown-up game. Learn a few of the secrets of strategic business dining. Experience the challenges of wine & food pairing. This will be interactive fun, incorporating table set-tings and bread service into the evening’s informa-tional angle. The adventure then takes shape as we taste through four wines alongside different food components. The mission, to figure out what it takes to make a food and a wine BOTH taste better when enjoyed together rather than interpreted as less complete when consumed individually.Deborah Goldstein, of Table Matters, will lead this wild urban quest. Table Matters is the brainchild of Deborah, a seasoned restaurateur and host. Ms. Goldstein owned Goldies by the Bridge in Sleepy Hollow NY from 1991-1998. She subsequently sold wine for Martin Scott Wines and consulted for restaurants in New York and California. Deborah now looks forward to educating and entertaining clients in all areas of The Table: pertaining to business meals, home life and entertaining. Table Matters provides coaching in different areas of strategic business dining. $40 plus tax and service charge per member and $45 plus tax and service charge per guest by March 16th at noon, $49 plus tax and service charge for member late reservations and $54 plus tax and service charge for guest late reservations. The Black Agenda in the Age of Obama |Thursday, February 4th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Join us in a celebration of Black History Month with Hugh Price, one of the premiere experts of our time on education, civil rights, equal opportunity, and criminal justice. The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States marked the ultimate triumph of the civil rights movement, which championed the ideals of opportunity and equality for all. Even so, African Americans still lag behind in student achievement, poverty and unemploy-ment rates, household wealth and other vital signs. As president, Mr. Obama eschews race-specific approaches. His administration is saddled with a weak economy and soaring federal deficits which severely constrain its ability to mount major new domestic initiatives beyond health care reform. What, therefore, should be the black agenda in the exciting yet unsettling Obama era?Price is the John L. Priceless: The Case That Brought Down the Visa/Mastercard Bank Cartel |Thursday, February 11th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. The largest federal antitrust settlement in U.S. history — with a ground-breaking settlement of $3.4 billion — began with a shocking conversa-tion overheard at a New York restaurant and a plot to uncover some “dirt” or “strange perversion” on Lloyd Constantine ‘69 was hatched. Priceless: The Case That Brought Down the Visa/Mastercard Bank Cartel, by lead counsel Lloyd Constantine, is a riveting, non-fiction, triumphant David and Goliath legal drama that captivates from this near farcical plan to strong arm Constantine into submission until the final battle plans have been laid. This fast-paced tale pits Constantine’s boutique law firm, representing America’s merchants, against the all-power-ful credit card cartel of Visa and MasterCard. The high stakes litigation put his entire career at risk, his health in jeopardy, eventually crushing the monopoly and ended the cartel’s stranglehold on retailers, saving merchants and consumers upwards of $87 billion. Lloyd Constantine ‘69, a graduate of Williams College and Columbia Law School, was Assistant Attorney General of Antitrust for New York State from 1980-1991. As Chair of the Antitrust Task Force of the National Association of Attorneys General from 1985-1989, he began a movement that led to uniform antitrust enforcement guidelines. pablo nerruda, Chilean nobel prize winner, is considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. The poet loved wine and women. Lust was often his theme, including in “Ode to Wine”:

My darling, suddenlythe line of your hipbecomes the brimming curveof the wine goblet, your breast is the grape cluster, your nipples are the grapes, the gleam of spirits lights your hair, and your navel is a chaste sealstamped on the vessel of your belly, your love an inexhaustiblecascade of wine, light that illuminates my senses, the earthly splendor of life.

For neruda, wine was sensual and erotic.
