Introduction

At Hang Fast Adventure Structures we are Climbers, Cavers, Mountain Bikers, Mountaineers, Travellers, Explorers – ‘Adventurers’ The spirit and passion we have for the outdoors and adventure, motivated us to launch the company back in 2001. Today the same qualities are designed into every product we produce.

As market leaders in the design, manufacture and installation of climbing walls, Hang Fast provides indoor adventure solutions to the leisure, sport and outdoor activity sectors that are safe, affordable and flexible.

With more than two decades of experience in creating three-dimensional, textured climbing walls that simulate real rock, Hang Fast is now also using these same technologies and skills to bring the exploration of underground caves to a rapidly expanding indoor market.

From our dedicated design and manufacturing facility in Yorkshire, Hang Fast’s designers and trained technicians are able to build and develop exciting and challeging climbing walls to the highest possible standard.

Our clients range from relatively small, privately owned and operated facilities, to leading European leisure industry specialists such as Center Parcs. They also include publicly financed outdoor education and activity centres and innovative regeneration and sports engagement projects.

The popularity of climbing in the UK is increasing. It is difficult to give participation figures for mountaineering due to the nature of the activity. For instance, people don't need to register when they hike up a mountain or go climbing on a crag in the UK. However, here are a few indicators:

BMC membership has grown in recent years, from a total of about 25,000 in 1990 to over 70,000 currently.

There are approximately 300 climbing and mountaineering clubs (including student clubs) affiliated to the BMC.

Approximately 5 million climbing wall users in the UK.

There are over 300 public access climbing walls listed within the BMC wall directory and there are further climbing walls in schools, gyms and those used by the military.

According to Active People Survey 2 (2007/08) ‘mountaineering’ was indicated to be the tenth fastest growing sport in terms of increase in participation over the past two years, .

Active People Survey 4 (2009/10) showed that participation in climbing, hill walking and mountaineering was increasing.

Active People Survey 5 (2010/11) indicated that 'mountaineering' was one of only four sports to show an increase in participation.

Women in climbingAccording to the BMC equity survey the proportion of women has increased from 16% to 25% from 2002 to 2006. There are now a number of clubs and courses specifically aimed at women.Source: BMC

Design Considerations

Developing a climbing wall does not have to be difficult. Here at Hang Fast we use our expertise and knowledge, to try and make the experience as straight forward, and efficient as possible.

The first and most important part of developing a climbing wall, is finding or deciding on a location. Be it a top rope wall in a school gym, or a new bouldering centre, a space will need to be designated for our designers to work with.

If you have not found you perfect location or are unsure, our team can help you find the most practical space, and cost effective location for your new wall.

Once you have decided where you would like your wall, the next step is to decide on you budget. Knowing how much you want to spend allows our designers to develop a wall that you can afford.

If you are on a tight budget we can develop a wall using different construction techniques, space management, and some tricks of the trade, to make sure you get cost effictive wall that fulfills your most critical criteria.

Once you have found your optimum location, and allocated a budget our designers, will start to tailor your climbing wall to your facility. Having a construction type and the features you like in mind, can help our designers build you perfect wall. But again if you are unsure, we can make suggestions and work closley together to make sure you get what you want out of the project.

Alongside an initial concept, we will generate an preliminary quote and information pack. From there we will work together to develop and finalise a design, before starting the manufacture process.

Design & Manufacture

Hang Fast designs, manufactures, and installs all types of roped wall to fit any space, and to suit any budget. A climbing wall designed by Hang Fast can include any number of different features, from gentle slabs, to steep vertical walls and overhangs. They are available in all our construction options (please see Construction types section). The time it takes to manufacture and install a wall is dependent on size and type, and can take anything from a few days to weeks.

Using the latest 2D & 3D software our designers design and devlop custom built walls to be manufactured using CNC technology. Our panels are always finished with our trade mark friction coating for the ultimate climbing experience.

Our Gia Core and Stone products are all hand crafted in a controlled enviroment by highly experienced and dedicated staff.

All Hang Fast climbing walls are built to the European Standard for Artificial Climbing Structures (EN 12572). We are also CHAS registered and a trade member of the ABC. Hang Fast work closely with governing bodies and associates to keep upto date and contribute to the development of indoor climbing.

Types of Climbing Wall

Roped Climbing Walls

A ‘traditional’ type of indoor climbing wall. Great for multiple use and developing all round climbing skills, preparing users for outdoor climbing if they are ready to face the elements!

What are they?

Roped walls offer a safe but challenging alternative to climbing a real rock face outdoors, using ropes to securely climb to the top. These are typically over four metres in height, and require a climber and a belayer (or belay device) to allow safe ascent to the top, from where the climber is lowered back to the ground. There are essentially two types of roped wall – top roping walls and leading walls.

Top roping walls have a rope already fixed in position, attached to the wall by a belay point, at the top of the wall, ready for the climber to attach to. Leading walls contain safety points for a climber to attach a rope as they climb to the top. Most modern walls are a combination of both types, giving flexibility for the users as routes can be changed regularly – top ropes can be placed on different routes allowing the previous top-roped route to be used by climbers (leading routes).

With a Hang Fast wall, the routes are designed in a way that gives the climber the same kind of experience as climbing outdoors – without the bad weather and midges. The routes can be graded in terms of difficulty, allowing the novice to work their way up from relatively easy climbs, to routes that are much more challenging. Our skilled technicians can craft and design your wall to suit any ability – from complete beginner to elite athlete.

Why have a roped wall?

Roped walls offer the experience of climbing up a rock face indoors, great for building confidence and skills before heading out and contending with the elements on outdoor rock faces. Many wall structures offer great versatility with the ability to change routes on a regular basis.

Roped walls are becoming increasing popular in schools due to NICAS www.nicas.co.uk and the GCSE P.E. Assessment.

Bouldering Walls

The new trendy kid on the block! Now recognised as a sport in its own right bouldering walls are increasing in number and popularity. Make any area your climbing space.

What are they?

Bouldering walls offer low level climbing without the need for personal safety equipment (e.g. a climbing harness). They are typically between 4m and 4.5m in height and have specialist safety matting underneath to cushion any impacts. Bouldering walls were originally conceived to replicate challenging problems on routes allowing climbers to train and practice until they had the ability to climb the route outdoors. Whilst bouldering walls are still used for the same reason today, bouldering has developed into a sport in its own right. A new breed of climbers who call themselves ‘boulderers’ have evolved, with their own distinctive lifestyle – they can often be seen scuttling around northern, gritstone outcrops in the depths of winter with large mattresses strapped to their backs and sporting beanie hats for additional warmth.

Due to the advancement and popularity of the sport, boundaries in bouldering are being challenged and more sophisticated and technical problems can be created artificially then can be found naturally.

Why have a bouldering wall?

Bouldering walls can be built in any space you have available – if you think your space is too small then why not challenge us? They do not require high roofs and they do not have to be large to offer a variety of challenging routes. Many climbing centres now have bouldering walls alongside roped climbing walls offering different climbing and training facilities for their customers. Bouldering walls are generally cheaper to operate and maintain compared to roped climbing walls.

As the majority of Hang Fast staff are passionate climbers, creating challenging and fun routes is what we enjoy. If you need a different type of bouldering wall then make our day and give us the opportunity to help you progress the developing world of bouldering!

Traverse Walls

No height but plenty of length?! If this is your problem, no need to worry you can still have a climbing area. Convert any wall into a traverse wall, including a corridor. How cool would your office or school be then?

What are they?

Traverse walls are up to two metres high and can built along an existing wall, or free-standing structure. They can vary in length, depending on space available. These walls are increasingly popular for those with limited space, due to the fact they are simple and cost effective, whilst offering a climbing experience. Traverse walls require limited protection for the users (e.g. no safety ropes or harnesses).

In climbing centres traverse walls are often used as ‘warm up’ walls by climbers, preparing them for more challenging routes. Traverse walls are found both indoors and outdoors and are a great addition to other playground and recreational facility equipment. They work well in the corridors of schools and sport facilities, making use of all available space.

Why have a traverse wall?

Traverse walls are the most cost effective and fastest way to put a climbing experience in your centre or school. You can create a traverse wall on a brick wall, or even a fence. The structure of the wall means that you don’t need staff with qualifications to enable people to climb on it, increasing its usability while reducing costs. Climbing across a traverse wall requires co-ordination and balance, as well as the ability to think before you make your move. These are great skills to develop to enhance climbing performance in a range of ages and abilities. Traverse walls are often used as part of a bigger structure (for example indoor play centres, outdoor rope courses) to add dimension and increase the range of challenges available

Climbing Towers

Climbing Towers are space efficient solutions to both indoor and outdoor climbing. Usually used outdoors as they are free standing and work well with auto belay and or normal belays.

For outdoor use fiber glass towers tend to work best, the material is naturally more weather resistant however plywood can still be used. The four sided towers can easliy achive 8 - 12 routes providing a good activity for outdoor pursuits centers.

Climbing Wall Construction

Tectonic Core

Our most cost effective solution providing a climbing wall for those on a budget. The main structure for our ‘off the shelf’ packages, but can also be used in bespoke designs.

What is it?

Hang Fast Tectonic Core walls are the most cost effective climbing wall solution there is. Simple, yet effective shapes are created from non-aggressive friction coated plywood and mounted on a timber structure. Tectonic Core offers excellent route setting possibilities, with 36 bolt-on hold placements per square metre. The edges of Tectonic Core panels are specially designed to limit wear on ropes and reduce the risk of accidents. Rope protection strips are added where required. Volumes made from Tectonic Core can be added to create more dimensions to the finished climbing area.

What are the advantages of TECTONIC CORE?

Cost effective and value for money – Hang Fast’s ‘off the shelf’ options are the cheapest climbing walls in the UK. Basic structure allows greater route setting. More bolt-on hold placements gives the setter more options to create interesting and challenging routes. Tectonic Core walls take a minimal amount of time to build and install, meaning you can be climbing on your new wall sooner than you think! The walls can be any colour or display any design (e.g. company logo) or theme (e.g. rain forest) to match your requirements.

Tectonic Plate

Adding variety of shapes to the wall, whilst still keeping the accountants happy!

What is it?

Hang Fast Tectonic Plate walls are the next generation of climbing walls. Inspired by amazing features we climb on today, that were created by the movement of the Earths crust millions of years ago. Tectonic Plate walls are multi faceted/mosaic (wall panels set at differing angles) bespoke designed walls. Complex shapes are created from non aggressive friction coated plywood and mounted on a timber structure. Tectonic Plate can be used to produce multiple angles and overhang sections, depending on the requirements of the end user.

Whilst Tectonic Plate is widely used for roped walls, the product lends itself to bouldering wall construction to create shapes and features that in the past have only been dreamed of (please see Hang Fast guides for more information on the different type of walls). The edges of Tectonic Plate panels are specially designed to limit wear on ropes and reduce the risk of accidents. Rope protection strips are added where required. Volumes made out of Tectonic Core (please see Tectonic Core guide for more details) can be added to created more dimension to the finished climbing area.

What are the advantages of a TECTONIC PLATE?

Each wall is an individual design that not only looks amazing but can, if required, contain advanced features (e.g. multiple overhangs). Tectonic Plate wall is versatile as the position of holds can be moved and routes changed on a regular basis. Tectonic Plate walls are aesthetically pleasing and entice people to climb. The entire wall and different sections of it can be any colour or display any design (e.g. company logo) or theme (e.g. rain forest) to match your requirements.

Gaia Core

If you want your wall to look like rock then our Gaia range is what you need. Start basic then build it up. A finish to inspire anyone to get up and have a go.

What is it?

Hang Fast Gaia Core walls are inspired by the natural rock formations created by Mother Nature, if you want a climbing wall to look like it is natural rock then look no further. Features such as pockets, cracks, tufas and flakes can be recreated. Gaia Core walls are painted to replicate different types of natural rock walls – gritstone, limestone, slate. Each Gaia Core wall is an individual design. The Gaia Core system can be used to create any wall of any height, although it is more commonly used for roped, boulder and tower walls (please see Hang Fast guides for more information on the different type of walls). Gaia Core can be designed and used with or without bolt on holds. Holds can be placed onto the structures to provide extra foot and hand holds. The number of holds and type of holds is dependent on who the end user is. The edges of the structure are specially designed to limit wear and tear on ropes and reduce the risk of accidents.

What are the advantages of a GAIA CORE?

Each wall is individual and aesthetically pleasing. The features and feel of the wall can recreate the natural rock climbing experience in any centre (indoor or outdoor).

Gaia Stone

The closest thing to actual rock climbing indoors! Hand sculpted individual design – every wall is unique.

What is it?

Hang Fast Gaia Stone walls are inspired by the natural rock formations created by Mother Nature, if you want a climbing wall to look like natural rock then look no further. The Gaia Stone is the next step on from Gaia Core. A hand sculpted blend of aggregates and resins are using to recreate every feature found on a natural crag or rock face. Features such as pockets, edges, cracks, tufas and flakes can be recreated. Gaia Stone walls are painted to replicate different types of natural rock walls – gritstone, limestone, slate. Each Gaia Stone wall is an individual design.

The Gaia Stone system can be used to create any wall of any height, although it is more commonly used for roped, boulder and tower walls (please see Hang Fast guides for more information on the different type of walls). The Barn

The Barn is a climbing and bouldering centre situated in the original stable block of the 1782 Busfields estate in Crossflatts, West Yorkshire. Altough the building is relatively small it features 8m high top roping walls, and over 500sqm of bouldering. The centre is now popular with local boulderers, and is very successful with school groups and birthday parties.

Hang Fast run and own The Barn giving us the ability to provide our customers with the experience and knowledge of the running of an entire centre.

We have developed our own membership and database management system, alongside a coffee shop and extremly popular birthday party sessions.

We also regulary update the climbing surface within The Barn testing new ideas and shapes. You will also find many of our bespoke volumes dotted around as well as a large selection of climbing holds which we test and trial to make sure we only use the best.

Climbing Holds

The climbing wall structure provides the base and shape of the climbing surface. Climbing holds attach to the wall using counter sunk bolts to form the climbable routes.

Climbing holds come in a thousands of different shapes, sizes, colours and styles and along with their spacing they ultimately dictate the difficulty of the climb.

We can supply all the holds for your wall and work out the best selection of holds to achieve routes in the grading of your choice. We can either work this into our initial quote or if you would like to order and select your own holds we can leave the holds out of the quote.

Page 21: Hangfast: Climbing Walls

Safety Matting

It's no secret that when building a climbing centre that the safety matting contributes to a high percentage of the overall cost. However it is an essential element for keeping the climber safe and and complying to British and European standards.

Hang Fast can supply matting and like the holds we can either deliver a quote with our without it factored in.

Our designers are well versed in the British and European standards for climbing wall safety and matting and ensure your centre complies to all standards.

Bouldering mats come in a range of different colours and depths. They can be left with just a vinyl wrap or for an additional cost be carpet topped for a higher grade finish.

Rubber crumb matting for top rope walls has a slightly more limited variety but we can work with you and our suppliers to deliver the perfect solution for your centre.

Inspections

Adventure just isn’t what it used to be!

The idea of adventurous activities has altered greatly since those early pioneers who first risked their lives attempting Everest. Nowadays operators of adventure facilities have a duty of care to ensure their structures, whether it’s a climbing wall, ropes course or artificial cave, are safe to use, without removing the adventure component.

Legislation requires a recordable inspection regime to ensure compliance with current health and safety. The frequency of the inspections depends upon the number of users, frequency of use, and the environment the structure is exposed too.

Operators will generally organise their own daily, weekly and monthly checks, however in depth annual inspections require an understanding of the manufacture, and installation of an adventure structure. This level of competency generally falls outside that of the staff and operators of an adventure facility.

Hang Fast has a vast wealth of experience gained from working within the climbing wall and high ropes construction industry for many years. Our technicians have worked for many of the leading manufacturers, and therefore have knowledge of all construction techniques and materials.

The findings from all our reports are checked by a qualified structural engineer.

Adventure structure inspections and maintenance are the core area of our business which means we are the only company that employs a dedicated full time inspection team. The team has a fully equipped van containing all the materials required to inspect and repair structures so if there is an issue then more often than not it can be rectified on the day of inspection meaning your structure will be ready for use the next day (or after inspection!).

“The idea is, not just to do an inspection, find a problem and say we’ll be back to fix it later – but to try and sort it there and then” quote from Ric – Hang Fast Inspection.

Hang Fast only offer one level of inspection, and that is a full comprehensive inspection conducted to the British and European standard that applies to your structure.

During an inspection, our team will check: The condition and integrity of all structural components.• The condition and security of all surfaces.• The condition and security of all anchor systems• Climbing holds and placements• Compliance to EN regulations

Climbing Wall Inspections

Our annual inspections fulfills the inspection requirements as laid down in BS EN 12572.

As well as the British and European standards for climbing walls, we also rely on the standards set down by governing bodies such as ROSPA for guidance. Our inspection technicians will conduct a thorough inspection of the structural components of the climbing wall. The format of the inspection is as below;

A physical and visual inspection of:

• Primary framework (generally the building substructure/supporting structure)• Secondary framework (how the wall is attached to the building)• Intermediate safety anchors• Belay lower off anchors• Bolt on holds• Bolt on hold placements• Surface integrity and security• Ground anchors if applicable• Safety matting• Compliance to BS EN regulations

If required, maintenance and repairs will be conducted, to remedy any issues that can be addressed using components, and materials carried by the service technicians, within the available time period. Upon completion of the inspection, a comprehensive report will be prepared detailing our findings, highlighting any recommendations for further action or which may improve the quality and lifespan of your facility.

If the facility is considered safe to use, and complies with the relevant standards, an inspection certificate from Hang Fast Ltd will be issued that details the date of the inspection, continued compliance with BS EN 12572, and the date when a further inspection is recommended (usually after a 12 month interval).

Repairs & MaintaNENCE

Adventure Structures (climbing walls, rope courses and caving systems) offer excitement to the end user but can be a headache to the facility manager when they need repairs or maintenance. Sometimes the elements that are used to provide safety (for example chains, ropes, wires) are the very things that need repairing. As inspections and maintenance are part of our key business area, we have over time, developed techniques to have your structure looking like new and back in working order in the quickest time possible.

Don’t leave it until the last minute for an issue to be resolved. The quicker a problem is detected and repaired then it is usually cheaper and takes less time.

Hang Fast employs technicians that have many years experience in repairing and maintaining all types of adventure structures made from a multitude of products (for example all types of wood, polyester/epoxy resin products, and concrete). We are confident we can repair your structure whatever it is made of.

Do you want to spread the cost and have no un-expected bills? Then why not look at a Hang Fast Maintenance Contract?

Climbing Walls

As climbing wall structures get older they have a tendency to lose their texture, friction and appeal. At Hang Fast we have pioneered ways of refinishing surfaces whilst in-situ. Our high quality friction finishes restore your facility to its former state, and in some cases is actually better than the product when new!Hang Fast employ artists that can apply a fresh look to your facility - whether it’s bright colours or a rock effect appearance.

Rope & Assault Courses

As rope and assault course are generally open to the elements, parts can rot, rust and fray. Often minor repairs make a huge difference (e.g. new steel wire or replaced timber). Spend a little on your course now to make sure it is functional for years to come.

Indoor Caving Systems

We also cover the basics! If your facility just needs a good clean to bring it back to life then contact us for a quote, and if you want to save more money why not book it in for the same time as your inspection?

Page 24: Hangfast: Climbing Walls

Page 24 www.hangfastclimbing.co.uk

tEXTURING

Have you got that slippery shoe syndrome? Want to give your climbing facilities that little bit extra friction?

Then why not take a look at what Hang Fast can offer you with our trademark friction coating. Our texture coating adds friction to surfaces and can be applied to a number of different materials including plywood, brickwork, block work and fibreglass.

The texture is made up of a resin and sand bond mixture and can be made to produce a high or medium density friction. Its overall effect adds friction but also fills in defects, joints between panels and screw head holes to create a seamless finish. Prices start from as little as £5.00 per sqm.

Our clients to use this service include:• White Spider• Awesome Walls Dublin• Kendal Wall• The Barn• Chichester University

rOUTE SETTING

Along with our own qualified and experienced route and problem setters, Hang Fast employs independent route setters who on a regular basis set routes and problems for national and world class competitions. We are therefore confident in providing you with a route setting service to suit any level and budget.

Climbing grades range from 3+ to 9c with the higher the number and letter the harder the grade. Our route setters can work out the level of your clientel and set routes that will not only keep them happy but provide a realistic and beatable challegle.
