CLIMBING WALL GRIPS & ACCESSORIES

The Numero and Alpha grips are great for kids. For easy to medium difficulty routes we suggest the Deimos and Sunda grips. The grips are bigger and more versatile, and well rounded to protect the fingers. For harder routes use the Atlas Ranges, moulded from real rock, which include 30 grips ranging from small to large.

Ideal grips coverage is 7-12 climbing grips per m2. For younger kids, more grips per m2 will make the grips closer together and easier to climb.

Fastens with an Allan Key

There are a lot of ways to build a climbing wall. Here are some guidelines on how to install a simple climbing wall against an existing wall. These instructions deal with building a vertical wall for kids (without overhangs). There are numerous plans online for more involved climbing walls.Ideal grips coverage is 7-12 climbing grips per m2. For younger kids, more grips per m2 will make the grips closer together and easier to climb. The 123's and ABC's are specially suited to attract kids. For easy to medium difficulty routes we suggest the Deimos and Sunda grips. The grips are bigger and well rounded to protect the fingers. For medium to harder routes, try the Grizzly and Daktyl sets, which includes some mini-jugs, pinches and pockets. For more challenging routes use the Atlas sets, moulded from real rock, which consist of 30 grips ranging from small to large.

Brick Wall installationThe wall should be quite smooth. Thin Grips may break when over tightened, especially on an uneven surface. Grips can be removed with some difficulty. Use a top-rope system if higher than 3m.

Materials/ Tools.• Climbing grips.• Counter sunk hex head bolts. One for each grip. (Mild

steel for indoors, stainless steel for outdoors)• Expansion Anchors. (One for each grip)• Impact Drill and 14mm masonry bit• 6mm allan key

Method• Drill 1 hole per grip in the wall, using the 14mm

masonry bit. Ensure to drill straight.• Remove sheath from the expansion anchor. Place the

bolt through the grip and attached the sheath on theback. Stop when it touches the back of the grip (beforeit starts expanding)

• Place the grip with bolt into the hole and tighten usingthe allan key.

• P.S. for thick plaster or very smooth walls, I suggestplacing a small blob of "NoMoreNails" or similar on theback of the grip to stop it slipping.

Building a Climbing Wall

Building a Climbing Wall

Plywood panel installationAdding or moving grips around to create new routes is easy. Few holes in your brick wall.

Materials / tools• Climbing Grips• Counter sunk hex head bolts. (Mild steel for indoors, stainless steel for outdoors)• 18mm or 21mm thick plywood. (2.4m x 1.2m)• Timber plank - 38mm x 76mm (1 for each long edge of the panel)• 3 expansion anchors per plank• Up to 100 T-nuts• Paint or Varnish• Wood screws - 40mm x 5mm• Impact drill. 9mm wood bit. 14mm masonry bit. Screw driver bit/ square bit for screws.• 6mm allan keyMethod• To prepare the panel.

o Drill 9mm holes for the T-nuts. 100 holes works well, and caters for adding more gripsdown the line, or even just moving the existing grips around.

o Paint/ Varnish the panel. Use a small brush to get it in the holes (especially important foroutdoors), and a roller for the main surface.

o Hammer in the T-nuts.• Measure and mark the wall for positioning.• Drill 3 x 9mm holes in the planks of wood. (20cm from top / bottom, and one in the middle)• Place the planks against the wall and mark the 3 holes using the drill. Move the plank, and drill

the wall 8-9cm deep with the 14mm masonry bit.• Remove the sheaths from the expansion anchors bolts, put the bolts though the holes in the

plank and attach the sheaths at the back.• Place the planks against the wall, expansion bolts in the holes, and tighten.• Place the panel against the planks, and screw though both. 6 along the length of the panel is

enough.• Touch up paint over the screw holes for cosmetics.• Attach the grips by inserting the bolt through the grip, and slowing turning the bolt as you insert

it into the hole. Don't push, as you may push the T-nut out the back.• Tighten the grips. Be careful not to over tighten the thinner ones. (eg. Calypso set)• Climb!

Always use a landing mat or rope. Always consult a professional. Extremely South African cannot be held responsible
