Welcome to the April edition. As we head towards the
spring and summer months, we can look forward to summer fetes, willow on bat, strawberries, scarecrow festivals, walks in the
countryside with pub lunches, the sound of mowers...and for my other half, that perfect green striped lawn! Our lawn has never really been up to standard as it seems to be a bog most of the year round, but I’m reliably informed that all the scarifying, reseeding, fertilising, nurturing and, let’s face it, fussing, in the spring will make all the difference. If you are so disposed, our fantastic local garden centres are great places for advice and ideas!
Our local events pages are groaning under the weight of so many local activities this month. Yet there’s always room for more! Please keep the local events coming in. Listings are completely
free for small local groups and charities. We also list all events, along with some extras, on our website.
The school holidays this year in our house will bring revision and more revision. I’d forgotten what doing summer exams is like. Oh the joys of waking up on the morning of the exam and just not knowing what you will be asked and thinking that you don’t know any of it! I think I’m feeling more nervous than my children - but this probably isn’t true! Good luck to anyone doing exams next term. As my parents always said to us (whether we believed them or not!) you can only do your best and no more.
Well done to Mrs Thorpe of Huntington for winning the February competition.
Until next month…Marianne

In association with BM Services
Ben Leefe has been creating beautiful bathrooms in the York area for ten years.
He mainly works in domestic properties and specialises in
installing bathrooms, showers – and helping families solve their plumbing problems.
For example, he recently helped a father get out of the doghouse with his family and become his teenage children’s flavour of the month. The household had been struggling with an inefficient, aging electric shower
for a long time, but it seemed the installation and wiring meant they were stuck with it. Ben, however, managed to change them over to a thermostatic shower... and restore peace to the family once more!
This typical case study demonstrates how Ben is willing to spend time to help homeowners find exactly he right solution for their home and their family. Free estimates and quotes are available.
Ben doesn’t believe in being a ‘jack of all trades’ – he prefers himself and the people he works with to be masters of one. He works alongside experienced tilers and a trusted, qualified electrician, which means he can ensure your bathroom project is completed as swiftly as possible and every aspect of it is carried out by the appropriate expert. While he focuses on the plumbing – the bit he does best – the tiling and electrics
are being carried out by people who are fully qualified for the job.
In response to customer demand, last year Ben qualified to work with gas and was registered with Gas Safe, meaning he can bring the reliability and quality of workmanship he’s known for to boiler and central heating installations and plumbing.
For a discussion about your plumbing or heating, or a free estimate, contact Ben Leefe on 01904 340801 or 07887 852468.

Nothing beats a real fire and the benefits of wood-burning stoves are becoming more and more recognised. Focus display a wide choice of stoves (includ-ing Defra approved) and their installers have the experience and HETAS qualifications to install these appliances. For those wanting the appearance of a stove but with less effort involved: there are also gas and electric versions available that can be seen on live display in
their showroom.York has an
abundance of period properties and as manufacturers, Fo-cus Fireplaces offer a wide choice from their portfolio of traditional stone, timber and painted fire surrounds.
Recent years however, have seen contemporary fireplaces become more popular and Fo-cus can tempt customers with stunning designs in black glass and chrome.
Many of the fireplaces are manufactured in a petite size so that studio or retirement apartments can benefit from the focal point that a fireplace creates. In addition to this, there are various contemporary hang on the wall fires available
in gas and electric options. With the increase in fuel
prices there has been a shift to-wards installing more efficient gas fires. Focus Fireplaces have several of these on live display.
The friendly and knowledge-able staff have literally decades of experience in imparting the technical help essential in choosing a new fireplace.

You want a 911, but need more space and would rather have the commanding view of the road a 4x4 offers. Is the Porsche Cayenne the answer? We find out…
by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)
PorscheCayenne GTS
What is it? It’s a Cayenne – Porsche’s roughty toughty off-roader – but one that’s had a dose of steroids and some glitter liberally applied to its bodywork. Slotting into the range between the V8 S and the Turbo, the GTS comes with more focus and power and some distinctive styling options.
What’s under the bonnet?A rather raucous 4.8-litre V8 that’s been uprated from 394bhp to 414bhp and boasts 515Nm of torque. Performance is far from the Turbo’s though; the GTS will hit 60mph in 5.7s and go
on to 162mph. It sounds pretty special getting there though! Everything else has been on the sharpening block – the steering is crisper, the eight-speed gearbox shifts quicker, and the lowered ride height gives it an added edge on the road.
What’s the kit like? Pretty impressive, but like all Porsches you’ll soon rack up Ford Fiesta-sized bills on the options. A

communications pack costs £2,157, 21-inch black alloys are £1,513 and even the red paint will set you back £1,619. Our test car had a total of £13,760 worth of goodies…ouch.
Any rivals? The ageing Range Rover Sport puts up a pretty good fight, but we’ve never tried a Rangie that sounds as good as this GTS. Audi will soon be at the party with its SQ models, but that’s yet to be applied to its Q7. For a left field there’s always the Infiniti Vettel Edition, but that’s very expensive in comparison. So, not much choice
out there at the moment.
Is it any good? Although it’s incredibly quick and sounds tremendous, it can feel a little bit stressed out at times. By that we mean it feels on edge, twitchy even – perhaps the added sharpness has given it a little too much bite. However, there’s no doubting it has real presence on the road – it’s just the styling might not suit all tastes.
The verdictWe like the GTS treatment given to most Porsches. The 997 911 really benefitted from the work over, and the Panamera GTS we tried after this Cayenne worked fantastically well too. However, the off-roader doesn’t feel quite right in this guise. It’s quick and sounds incredible, but feels like it’s pretending to be something that it’s not.

and is enormously rewarding because you’re getting the top end of the market produce. Remember to grow what you like and what your garden can grow well - this may take some experimenting, but don’t be afraid to admit that some things are trickier than others in your plot.If you’re an organic gardener or you simply want to produce pesticide free vegetables, you
might need to spend more time thinking about what to grow and how you can best nurture it so that pests, dis-eases and other problems take a back seat.Seed and plant catalogues are now more likely to let you know which varieties are rela-tively pest or disease resistant. You can also encourage some of the naturally occurring insects that parasite or predate upon the garden pests, or bigger animals such as frogs, toads, hedgehogs and many birds. Insects include:

LadybirdsThe larvae and the adults both consume huge numbers of aphids.
LacewingsThe young or larvae are bril-liant predators, eating mainly aphids, but also eating other pests such as thrips and eggs of moths.
HoverfliesThe soft-bodied yellowy grey larvae are great aphid eaters, a single one eating up to fifty in a day, nearing 1,000 in its lifetime.
Ground beetlesOften seen scuttling off at speed when you move pots, low-growing plants or loose slabs, they are mostly black and often shiny and are brilliant predators of many pests includ-ing slugs, vineweevils and some insect eggs.
Solitary wasps
Some feed their larvae on aphids, weevils and other insects. Some of these may al-ready be in your garden, but by growing some suitable plants you can really build up their numbers. On the whole the simple, non-double varieties are the most insect friendly, so try some of these:
PhaceliaA hardy annual with bluish perfumed flowers, perfect for direct sowing.
Limnanthes douglasii (the poached egg plant)This yellow and white flow-ered hardy annual is loved by hoverflies.
Eschscholzia (the Californian poppy)This pretty yellow, orange and cream flowered plant can be di-rect sown and thrives in sunny well-drained sites.
Iberis (candytufts)One of the easiest hardy an-nuals, it has readily available pollen and nectar, perfect for many beneficial insects. The rewards are plentiful - a regular supply of superbly tasty vegetables, picked when rip-ened to perfection (not just to make them last longer on the supermarket shelf ), gathered as and when you need them and in the quantities you need (cutting down on wastage) plus you can choose the varieties you find tastiest.

by Julie WilsonHSBC have released a rather worrying report on retirement. It shows that, on
average, people will have 19 years in retirement. But the average person’s retirement savings will last for just 7 years.
It seems that people are putting their heads in the sand. Although we are all living longer, through tougher economic times, our expectations about the standard of living in retirement remain unchanged.
Worldwide, the study found that people will on average run out of retirement savings just over half way into their retirement. According to the study, more than half of the UK working population is not preparing adequately for retirement, with one in five saving nothing at all.
Figures last month from Nest, the state-provided default pension scheme, showed that seven in 10 private sector workers don’t currently pay into a retirement scheme.
Joanne Segars, the chief executive of the National Association of Pension Funds, has this to say: “The UK needs to do more to face up to saving for its old age. For millions of people, that will mean working longer or saving more, or both. Too many people will retire only to find they have to significantly downgrade their lifestyle because they do not have enough savings.

Nikki is keen to support local businesses and the variety of freshly baked breads including cob, twists and fruit loaves sold in the shop and used in the tearoom, come from a local baker, whilst a specialist artisan baker provides breads baked with unusual and di erent avours which are well worth a try. Fillings for the sandwiches come from the local shmonger, butcher and other suppliers.
Tasty co ees and traditional teas, including a particularly nice rhubarb and cream avour have been carefully sourced for their ne quality and by customer

With over 20 years experience in cake decorating, Nikki can cater for any occasion, producing celebration cakes in designs to suit your preferences and personality. She can create signature cakes for christenings, birthdays, engagements, retirements and any other excuse you need to enjoy a beautiful cake! Most recently Nikki was commissioned to design the cake for the Consecration of the Su ragan Bishop of Beverley, The Reverend Canon Glyn Webster, held in York Minster. Call into Cakes d’Licious to see the current display, and have a chat with Nikki about what you’d like. Or you can follow Cakes d’Licious’ Facebook page to keep up with latest designs.
There is a warm, friendly atmosphere to enjoy at Cakes d’Licious, not least because it’s a truly family business – three generations of Nikki’s family appear behind the counter at various times, including her parents (full-time employees!), her husband, both sisters, nephews, sons and sons’ girlfriends.
The carefully thought out uniforms - dickie bows, smart white shirts and black trousers for the men and tea dresses with
oral pinnies and old-school headbands for the ladies, along with music from the 40’s and 50’s make the vintage atmosphere complete.
Recently introduced are ‘Vintage Themed Hen Parties’ and ‘Cupcake Decorating Birthday Parties’, which have gone down particularly well with the little lady visitors to Cakes d’Licious (although adults will enjoy this just as much!!).

C akes d’Licious Tea Room is the culmination of many years of planning, hoping and dreaming.
Nikki’s love of cooking and baking came from a very early age; when she spent hours in the kitchen with her mother and late grandmother. She made her rst celebration cake at the age of 10 - a sponge decorated teddy bear for her then 2 year old sister’s birthday.
During a long career as a nursery nurse, teaching assistant and a spell as a full-time mum, Nikki held onto a dream of one day opening her own tea room.
Then, when she nally saw the property at 61 Clifton, something ‘clicked’.
Nikki said: “I had been looking for places for years, but this was the rst one that really felt right. I’d dreamed, and drawn doodles, about how the front of my tea room would look – and when I found 61 Clifton, I knew straightaway this would be the place.”
Since opening in October, Nikki has created a bustling tea room, with a good old fashioned friendly atmosphere to go with vintage décor and her utter devotion to quality food and drink. Says Nikki, “I have a true passion for food and enjoy nothing more than making others happy through my baking”.

Going to a catholic school, Lent can be a pretty big deal with the people around me. Now I haven’t taken part properly since my mum once per-suaded me to give up fizzy drinks, it didn’t last very long. However a friend of mine had a different idea this year, she’s given up eating meat for lent.
The majority of vegetarians I know have chosen to do so because of emotional reasons, they don’t like the idea of killing innocent animals, which is most would agree is fair enough although incon-venient at dinner parties. For me, growing up very close to the reality of the meat industry, from bot-tle feeding lambs that have later fed me, means I’m slightly more desensitised to the emotive aspect of eating animals.
There are of course some who simply don’t like the taste of meat, which is not hard to believe if they’ve never tried a bacon sarnie, and those who think it’s truly much healthier to be veggie than carnivorous, a controversial view, but not without its evidence.
But upon closer inspection, there might be a different, very valid reason for giving up meat. The environmental impact.
According to the UN in 2006, the meat produc-tion industry produces more CO2 per year than the entirety of the transport sector. That includes cars, trains, planes, ferries, the whole works. This figure takes into account the energy used when raising animals, feeding animals and growing their food, butchering them, transporting meat, keeping it cool, cooking them, thinking about it you could add even more, the knock-on effect of clearing for-ests for grazing, packaging meat, the energy that goes into making the steel for a cow shelter… but that would be maybe taking it too far. The point is, due to the insane rise in the consumption of meat over the last few centuries, and the response in the form of unsustainable intensive agriculture which causes a serious drain on resources like fossil fuels, water and land, it is now a serious player in the global warming game, one which doesn’t seem to get mentioned much at all.
The possibility of stopping everyone eating meat forever is ludicrous, but perhaps persuading people to eat less meat on a weekly basis could be slightly more achievable, and make a little bit of difference to the world. My friend might have the right idea, in giving it up for a short while, even if just for the challenge. So I’m giving it a go, just for one week, to see if I can. I’ll have an update next month!

Spiced Rack of Lambwith Fragrant Rice
Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour
Perfect for a spring Sunday lunch or stylish supper this quick and easy lamb dish is full of flavour. Choose a couple of meaty racks of lamb from a good butcher and score the layers of fat before spreading with the harissa paste. Serve with a cooling garlic and mint yoghurt sauce.
Ingredients:• 1 tbsp harissa paste (see Tip)• 2 trimmed racks of lamb, each
with 6 bones• 2 red onions, peeled and cut into
slim wedges• 50g butter• 225g basmati rice, rinsed and
drained• 1 garlic clove, peeled and
crushed• 750ml vegetable stock• Generous pinch saffron strands• 50g sultanas• 40g flaked almonds, lightly
toasted• 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds
Tip:Harissa paste is a fiery hot North African blend of red chilli peppers and spices – just a little goes a long way so use sparingly. You’ll find it in small jars near the dried herb and spice sections in most large supermarkets.
Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas 6. Spread the harissa paste over the lamb racks. Place the racks in an oiled roasting tin and add the onion wedges.
Roast in the preheated oven for 25-35 minutes depending on how pink you like your lamb. Remove from the oven. Cover with foil and leave to rest for 10 minutes – the lamb will be juicier and easier to carve.
Meanwhile, heat the butter in a heavy-based pan until melted and foaming. Add the rice and garlic. Fry gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring until the rice is translucent. Pour in the stock. Add the saffron and bring to the boil, stirring.
Cover the pan with a tight fitting lid. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook for 15-20 minutes without removing the lid until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat. Fork through to separate the grains. Add the sultanas, flaked almonds and pomegranate seeds.
Carve the lamb racks into individual cutlets and serve immediately with the fragrant rice and roast onion wedges.

After a visit to their well-established showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to nish.
The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that ts perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result.
Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers.
Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive re ts are the only exceptions.
Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote.
But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tired-out kitchen for an excellent price.
Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and ooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely exible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want.
“We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.”For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers.
In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours.
For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help
from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were rst rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you
to anyone.”Gary said: “Often, someone
looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...”
A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers.
Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was ne, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d tted for her before.”
After 22 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band tting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing

Every year, technology firms join in the April Fools fun - so for example in recent years Google announced self-driving racing cars, Toshiba pretended to make a 3D monocle and video site Animoto offered bark recognition for dogs. Not all odd-sounding technology items are fakes, though: there are some truly strange items and accessories out there. Some of the oddest items are related to smartphones and tablets, such as the iStuck mobile phone stand (£3) that looks like chewed bub-blegum, the Knuckles iPhone case - designed to look like a knuckle duster - and the just-announced iPotty (£39), a child’s potty with a built-in iPad stand. The idea, apparently, is that letting children use iPads while on the potty will make toilet training a fun game.
Other gadgets are more sen-sible, but rather odd looking - such as the iPhone SLR mount, which enables you to attach enormous SLR camera lenses to your phone. It might look like a novelty item, but the price says otherwise: at the current US exchange rate, it’s £156 plus
shipping and tax, and of course that doesn’t include the lenses. The mount is available for both Nikon and Canon lenses and promises to bring SLR effects such as variable depth of field to “the camera you carry with you every day”.
Another odd-looking but fairly sensible gadget is the Hand-spresso Auto ESE, a portable espresso coffee maker designed for in-car use. It uses the Easy Serving Espresso pods you might have seen for ordinary domestic coffee makers, and it’s particularly handy for road warriors who’d rather not pay inflated prices for motorway service station coffees. At around £130 it isn’t cheap, but if you use it regularly it’ll soon pay for itself.
You can buy odd things for your house too, and if you’re a musician or a fan of rock music you’ll appreciate the Marshall Fridge. From the outside it looks like the iconic Marshall amplifier stack, and it even uses authentic Marshall parts including the famous logo, fret cloth and brass-finished faceplate with knobs that go up to eleven, but inside it’s - yes! - a fridge. The manufacturer says it’s “the ultimate combination of rock and refrigeration”. Yours for £405.
Have you ever wished your fork
could nag you about your eat-ing? Good news if you have: the Hapifork (around £70) may look like an ordinary fork, but it’s stuffed with sensors that moni-tor how quickly you’re eating. It measures the number of times you put the fork in your mouth, the time between each serving and the total time you’ve spent eating, and vibrates and flashes if you’re eating too quickly. The data is then sent to your smart-phone. For now the line-up doesn’t extend to other cutlery, but manufacturer HAPIlabs says a spoon is in development.
The HAPIfork was one of several odd gadgets shown at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but it wasn’t the oddest: we saw GPS-ena-bled gadgets such as the Trak-Dot luggage locator (around £30 plus a £10 annual subscrip-tion), Nano Nails, which turn long fingernails into styluses for touchscreens (price tbc); the iMusic BodyRhythm, a music-powered massager that makes you look like you’re wearing a toilet seat around your neck (currently accepting pre-orders for $69, around £44), and the thoroughly odd Minime, which can create a phone case or a cuddly toy that includes a 3D rendering of your child’s face (or anybody else’s face). Expect to see Minime kiosks in shopping malls later this year.

Any building project re-quires a vast amount of knowledge to complete
but ensuring that the build-ing will be safe and stable is a job for a structural engineer.
Maltech, owned by Alan Mitch-ell, has been in business for 12 years providing essential support on projects big and small in the North Yorkshire area and further afield.
Whether the project is a domes-tic or large industrial or commer-cial scheme, the role of a structural engineer is critical not only in the building design but also in con-struction and repairs, extensions, conversions, ground investiga-tions, surveys and inspections.
Having a structural engineer’s report on your building project will give you peace of mind, but
should also help when you come to sell your property.
The team at Maltech can help with any project involving civil and structural engineering.
“We provide the same level of care and attention to all of our customers no matter how large or small the scheme,” Alan explains.
The other benefit of choosing Maltech is that they are local with good knowledge of the surround-ing area, which means that they can offer much more authoritative advice on your particular project.
The Maltech team like to ensure that they keep up to date with new techniques and develop-ments and are members of the Institute of Structural Engineers, the Association of Consulting Engi-neers and the Steel Construction Institute which all help to give you complete peace of mind when you
require their services. If you have a project in mind
this year, give the team at Maltech a call. They are always happy to give advice and can even help you with drawing plans and planning applications.

This young man goes by the name of Fergus, at less than a year old he had his
whole life ahead of him but at the moment he’s rather down on his luck…Hopefully there’s someone out there in Handy Mag Land that can help this handsome cat hit a lucky streak!
Fergus was born last year to a stray cat & largely left to his own devices for a while, enjoying the countryside with his brother and sister. Eventually he made his way into York Cats Protection Adoption Centre where he cur-rently still resides whilst waiting for a permanent and loving new home.
Fergus is wary with people when he first meets them, and he doesn’t help his cause by hissing and growling at folk when they try and say hello to him. Luckily we have discov-ered that all this bad language is nothing more than a big show. Fergus has never been aggressive, if you ignore his grumbling and start to give him
some gentle strokes you soon find that the swearing turns into purring and this sleek boy actu-ally quite enjoys the company of us humans.
Fergus would really blossom into a fantastic & adorable fella if he is just given a chance in a new home, one where he can gently be persuaded that life can really be quite enjoyable if he just gives it a chance. So if
you fancy a cute cat with lots of potential please contact us.
York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day from 11am -3pm. If you would like to adopt Fergus or any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email [email protected]. All our cats have been vet checked, mi-crochipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. There are few conditions more likely to lead a horse owner to be ostracized and shunned by others than a skin condi-tion in their beloved companion, (excepting, perhaps, a hacking cough or “strangles” lumps under the jaw).
RINGWORMA double misnomer, is one such condition. It's surpris-
ingly caused by a fungus not a worm and produces lesions that are rarely the classic “ring” shape. Young horses are commonly affected as they normally then get immune to the condition having recovered from it once.
It is simple to treat and early recognition and treatment is helpful as it stops the spores from contaminating the environment where they can lie dormant for a long time, particularly in wood, causing problems in other animals years later. Its very infectious hence the “evil” looks from other horse owners if theirs are in contact with yours and would lead to you being refused entry to horsey events. It can also spread to humans and can cause a really horrific itchy mess of your skin as any young vet/farmer will tell you!
“Common thingsThere must be more than a hundred weird and wonderful skin problems that we see but as we were taught as vet students “common things are common”, so don't leap to the internet and terrify yourself with gruesome possibilities!

Memories of Youth Work
A new book written by Eddie Benson MBE, former youth worker and
founder of the Haxby and Wig-ginton Youth & Community As-sociation, charts the history of youth organisations in the area since 1928 and more recently since 2000 and hopes to raise funds for local youth activities.
The book recalls many memorable events and features the Scouts and Guides, youth work and the many activities of the Methodist Church Youth Club, St Mary’s Church (AYPA), the Open Youth Club and the Boy’s Brigade. There are some-times comical stories of youth
work in the two villages and the work of the Haxby and Wigginton Youth and Community Association, the weekly ‘Pop In’ and the work of the Community Office.
With 80 pages of memo-ries and 125 photos and personal statements, the book i well worth a read.

LICE Causing another really itchy
scurfy problem in many horses. One never really knows where they originally come from, but the horses go nuts, chewing or stamping at their coats causing cuts and grazes, in their attempts to alleviate the itch. Luckily these only stay on humans for a couple of hours but, believe me, long enough to feel intense pity for the poor sufferers, its making me itch while I write!!
MUD FEVERThis year we've had more
horses than usual affected by “mud fever”, this is a scabby leg or body “rain scald” condition caused when several types of bacteria flourish in the airless warm damp conditions under muddy legs. Normally routine antiseptics and clipping off excess hair can settle this down but sometimes the infection
really takes hold, typically in white haired legs of chestnut horses or heavy feathered types. I have here some before and after shots of one such case which only improved after several courses of antibiotics and salt water spa treatment. Luckily his skin is now all perfect and he is back in ridden
work. These are but three of our
“common things” but the take home message is to spot prob-lems early and call your vet in if you are at all worried so that we can get you up and running quickly and with your horsey friends still speaking to you!!

Knittingfor the summer
Its easy to think of knitting as a winter occupation with all those warm woolly scarves and jumpers, but summer knits are simple in beautiful cottons and crisp colours.
This season’s styles are a refreshing mix of lace pastels, bold opposites and soft classic cottons. In fact, there is so much to choose from there really is something for everyone.
The latest yarns and patterns are available to view and purchase at Castaway Yarns in Haxby where, with a wealth of advice and guidance from owner Clare, you can start working on your own beautiful summer wardrobe.
If you’ve always wanted to create your own knitted garment but haven’t had chance to learn, help is at hand at Castaway Yarns. Regular knitting workshops take place, run by Audrey Wilson, an experienced fashion designer and knitwear specialist, who can show you how to make your garments look catwalk-professional.
Castaway Yarns’ owner Clare Burborough has a wealth of tips and knowledge herself to share, and her mother-in-law Jean, who often helps out in the shop, is an experienced knitter too.
General haberdashery supplies including but-tons, threads, cross-stitch threads and a wide selection of knitting patterns are also available.
Modern knitting patterns go far beyond simple clothing. Knitting patterns are availa-ble for anything from chunky woollen headbands to home accessories such as cushions.
Last year, the shop raised lots of money for the charity Children in Distress with their knitted garden appeal. This year Claire is hoping to do the same for Hearing Dogs. Look out for notices on how to take part later in the year.

Is Your Head Banging?
Whether you wake up with a banging headache or it develops as a dull ache throughout the day, a headache can be more than just a pain in the head – inconvenient, and at times debilitating. Thankfully most headaches aren’t dangerous, but understanding what type of headache you have and what’s causing it will help you when it comes to choosing treatment.
Why does my head hurt?A headache is caused when the blood vessels around the brain swell, along with tension in the muscles and nerves in surrounding muscles. If you’re stressed, not having enough sleep, drinking too much, dehydrated or eating lots of junk food, there’s more chance you’ll end up with a blinder. Eye strain, blocked sinuses, a change in body temperature or blood pressure and hormonal changes are other known triggers. Headaches can also be as a result of a cold virus or other health condition. If you’ve suffered a blow to the head or have a rash accompanied with a headache, always seek medical advice. Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and feel as if someone has stretched a rubber band around the top and side of your head. The pain is normally more constant compared to the throbbing ache you may experience with a migraine, which can cause vomiting and sensitivity to light. Cluster headaches tend to cause an intense pain around one or both eyes and can come on very suddenly. Sufferers may have one to three of these attacks every day for weeks or months and they are often more painful than a migraine. Brewing up a headache Found naturally in tea, coffee and chocolate
and added to many energy drinks, it’s more the withdrawal of caffeine than the stimulant itself that can lead to headaches. On the flip side, non-prescription painkillers with added caffeine can actually speed up their effectiveness.
Treating your headache You can buy a range of different painkillers over the counter or obtain stronger alternatives on prescription. Some may suit you better than
More than 10 million people in the UK suffer from regular headaches. But how do you know what type of headache you have and what the best treatment is?
By Julia Faulks
Lifestyle tips to reduce headaches1. Water: up your fluid intake and reduce
alcohol and caffeine.2. Relax: take up a sport or relaxing hobby
to help you manage stress levels.3. Breathe: get lots of fresh air and take
regular slow and deep breaths.4. Sleep: make sure you have enough sleep
with lots of early nights.5. Posture: reduce tension by improving the
way you sit, stand and move. 6. Smells: switch strong perfumes or
chemicals for a more natural alternative.7. Teeth: buy a mouth guard if you grind
your teeth at night.8. Eyes: have regular eye checks and avoid
looking at bright sunlight.9. Nutrition: think about the food you eat
and write a headache trigger diary.10. Temperature: avoid becoming too hot or
too cold.

Home Hairdressingothers – they include paracetamol, codeine, anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as aspirin and ibuprofen) or a group of anti-migraine medicines known as triptans (for example, sumatriptan). It’s recommended that you don’t take painkillers for more than two days at a time – if you do, you may be at risk of developing ‘medication-overuse’ headaches.
Clearing your head the natural way As well as improving your general lifestyle (more sleep and exercise, less booze and stress) try the following:1. Essential oils: either use them for massage or add them to
your bath. Recommended oils include Lavender, Clary Sage and Roman Chamomile. (Not suitable for pregnant women).
2. Cooling headache pads: For some instant soothing relief, use these alongside any other medication or on their own.
3. Tiger Balm: this is a natural remedy that is often used to help relieve headaches. (Not suitable for pregnant women or children under 2.)
4. Headache pillows: these may help prevent or relieve headaches by providing support to your neck, improving your posture and reducing inflammation.
5. Acupuncture/massage/reflexology: all of these alternative therapies can be extremely effective at relieving a nagging headache.

If you like your cinema-going to be intimate, close to home, and a little more cozy than a typical multiplex, there’s a gem of a place right on York’s doorstep.
The South Bank Community Cinema is a grassroots society set up by film-lovers from the city. Members get together every fortnight to watch a film on the big screen, which include classics, independents and foreign language films.
The South Bank Community Cinema pride themselves on doing things a little bit differently, offering an experience that’s classic and
homely. First of all, when you attend a film showing at Clements Hall – where their screenings take place – you’ll be gathered with friends old and new at candlelit tables, ‘cabaret’ style.
Furthermore, if popcorn, hot dogs and paper buckets of watery pop don’t do it for you, there’s a fully licensed bar on hand so you can enjoy your film with a glass of wine or beer to hand. And there’s even an interval to top up your glass, socialise and have a stretch.
Linda Speidel, the group’s chair, said: “We have an eclectic mix of
films. We try to show films that haven’t been in the cinemas for a long time, or maybe came and went quite quickly, and create another opportunity for people to see it on the big screen.”

19, with a screening of the Bob Fosse musical ‘All That Jazz’. Other highlights coming up this summer include ‘Goodbye Lenin’ and the Oscar-winning Japanese comedy, Departures.
The cinema’s AGM is April 24, so if you’d like to help keep independent cinema alive and thriving, now is a great time to get involved. Becoming a member is just £5 per year and gives you special members’ price tickets, regular news updates and the chance to have a say on what films are shown.
Tickets for the showings are available from Cycle Heaven, in Bishopthorpe Road, from Clements Hall itself. You can show up on the night and buy tickets there, but the popularity of many of their showings means places can be limited and a last-minute ticket is by no means guaranteed.
More information is available from the group’s website, at www.sbcommunitycinema.co.uk.
A COMMUNITY RESOURCEAs well as supporting independent cinema,
Clements Hall offers a huge range of classes, events and services to the local community. Members of the community formed a Trust to refurbish and run it, and it now hosts a lively programme which includes regular Yoga and dance classes, crafts, singing and Bible groups plus concerts, fairs and private parties. For more details, visit clementshall.org.uk.

Modern Denti stry Traditi onal Service
Whilst these tips are no substitute for seeing a dental professional they may prompt you to get to know your mouth better and see what is normal for you. • Look at your lips and check for scabs, lumps and
bumps that have not healed, people working outdoors should be particularly aware of the risks of skin cancer.
• Feel under your jaw line for any lumps and bumps that fail to resolve, if your ‘glands’ are regularly enlarged and tender you may have a dental problem.
• Using a small hand held torch look in a mirror and lift your tongue to see under it, you should be able to see some blood vessels, it should not look angry or have any white patches. If you do see these you must seek professional assessment soon.
• Now poke your tongue out and look at the sides and top, are there any lumps , bumps, ulcers, dents or white patches. If there are you should seek a professional opinion quickly.
• Do the same with the inside of your cheeks and as far as possible with the roof of your mouth.
• Now have a look at your gums, they should have a pale pink appearance, they should not bleed when you brush or oss. If they do you need an assessment of your gum health, poor gum health has been linked to health problems elsewhere in the body.
Finally have a look at your teeth are there any white, yellow, brown or black marks on them? Are there any that are chipped, again these should be checked professionally before they become a problem. Those of you who regularly attend a dentist will recognise these as part of the examination all dentists must do to fully assess your oral condition, many people seek help only when their teeth hurt and sadly this may be too late to save the tooth or make treatment much more complicated and expensiveFor a comprehensive mouth MOT contact Georgina at Howardian Dental Practice and book an appointment.

For kids, April means the Easter holidays. Time for enforced fun, ill-fated camping trips and long drives squished in the back of the car, with your siblings breathing in your face. We’ve picked some of the best books about family life and how to survive. Two weeks off…are we there yet?
My Family and Other Animals: Gerald DurrellEccentric but enchanting, Durrell recalls his blissful childhood growing up on a Greek Island. Scorpions and snakes abound, as well as colourful characters and the all-round air of plain bonkers-madness that we associate with family life. Chaotic and hypnotic, this book is hugely funny and hasn’t lost any of its appeal over the years.
Little Women: Louisa May AlcottNever were there such devoted sisters…until you add domestic turmoil, death and boys into the mix. Amy, Beth, Jo and Meg are the March sisters growing up during the Civil War era. Jo doesn’t want to cut her hair off and Meg doesn’t want to be a governess, but you have to admit that Beth comes off worst! It’s an all-American classic and is a definite must-read for any teenage girl, whether you have sisters or not.
The Awakening: Kate ChopinThis is the hopeless tale of New Orleans housewife Edna Pontellier who struggles like a caged bird, batting against the bars and confines of domesticity. There was little empathy for the character when
the book was first published and certainly she can be read as a very selfish protagonist, but subsequent generations have come to recognise Edna’s plight, her need for a sensuous relationship and ultimately, her freedom.
Everybody Jam: Ali LewisThe Dawson family is used to harsh climates and tough situations: they run a cattle station in Australia’s Northern Territory. Plagued by drought, this year’s ‘muster’ will be another battle with the elements. But there’s more to contend with than the outdoors this year. Eldest son Jonny has been killed but no one talks about it, 14 year old Sissy is pregnant after ‘rooting’ with an Aboriginal lad and there’s a new Pommie house girl who can’t even make toast. Told through the eyes of 13 year old Danny, it’s a story of a strong clan who overcome adversity and survive, way out in the outback.
The Red House: Mark HaddonHow do siblings become total strangers? Brought together by the death of their mother, Angela and her brother Richard have only really communicated through phone calls for the last decade or so. Now Richard has invited Angela and her
growing brood to spend a week with them in deepest darkest Wales. The book flits between characters but once you’re into the rhythm of how these two families tick, it’s a great read that’s full of sibling-rivalry, trips and falls down memory lane and getting to know each other all over again.
We Need to Talk About Kevin: Lionel ShriverThis is the shocking and disturbing story of a family torn apart when the eldest son carries out a massacre at his school. It’s powerfully told through a series of letters written by his mother, Eva to her husband Franklin as she tries to come to terms with the atrocities carried out by Kevin. It brings up all kinds of questions about nature versus nurture and how siblings and parents impact on each other’s lives. Throughout the book we can begin to piece together exactly what took place in the high school gym, but it still won’t prepare you for the startling conclusion. Quite simply, a brilliant thriller.

YORK • APRIL 2013 • ISSUE 89
Over the past two years many New Earswick residents have been talking about loneliness. A Joseph Rowntree research programme led to volunteers speaking to many local people about it. At many places in the village the volunteers set up their stall (often with their distinctive ‘washing line’) to get views and ideas. In Stage 1 the project focussed on questions, like – ‘Is there much loneliness in the village?’ (Answer - Yes), ‘What causes it? What sort of people are especially lonely?’ and so on. Then, in Stage 2, people were asked to suggest what could be done to help. Many suggestions, great and small, were made – and the volunteers ended up with a huge agenda for possible action. The project has now finished
its research phase, and the volunteers have formed themselves into an independent local group to try to do something concrete. The group is called NELLI. This stands, not for Nellie the Elephant, but for New Earswick Less Loneliness Initiative. However, elephants are usually not lonely, being animals that are very social and mutually supportive, so we could well aim to be more like them! It is, so far, a small group, so more people are needed, and would be warmly welcomed. If you feel you have a contribution to make, or just wish to know a bit more, please get in touch with the contact person named below.NELLI has already launched an ‘Under 5s Stay and Play’ scheme, at the Family Centre, called Earwigs. This is aimed at parents and carers with babies and
young children, and will encourage them to meet and make new friends. NELLI’s next plan is to run a Hobby and Craft Fair at The Folk Hall on 10th April from 2:00 p.m. This is in response to people who said there needed to be more ‘open’ community events, and that taking up new activities could be a way for lonely people (and others, of course) to meet new people. It will be attended by voluntary craft/ activity groups as well as commercial outlets. If you’d like to take up a hobby, learn a new skill, or just see what is happening in your area, do reserve the date and pop in if you can.
