Study Block Application• The expectation is that students are taking a full course load. Post –

Secondary institutions are looking for academic rigor. Taking fewer courses is not good for applications

• You may apply for a study block if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

• You are a Grad 11 or 12 student• You have a challenging course load or extraordinary extra-

curricular commitments• You have a good attendance history• You have a good record of citizenship

Youth In Trades Carpentry Program

•Open to grade 11 and 12 students

•Based at WVSS

•Students receive training every second day

•Information session WVSS Feb 5 2020 at 7pm.

Work Experience – Career Explorations

• Designed to give students some career insights

• Opportunities to gain relevant work experience

• Taken as an 8th course

• Regular class for 8 weeks before placement

• Must complete 90 hours

• If a student is working, some hours can be used

• May earn up to 8 credits

Youth Work in Trades

• Provides students the opportunity to begin their apprenticeship training while attending high school

•Day 1 attend school, day 2 workplace

• Every 120 hours worked – 4 credits

• Should have a sponsor already in the field (we have some opportunities within some fields)

Provincial Graduation AssessmentsIn order to graduate students will write:

Numeracy Assessment - grade 10

Literacy Assessment – grade 12 – starting 2021

Literacy Assessment – grade 12 - for French Immersion students

Provincial Graduation Assessments

• Will be Marked on a 4 point proficiency scale

• Emerging/ Developing/ Proficient/ Extending

• Reported separately on transcript – not blended with any course

• Universities are not interested in the Numeracy assessment at this time. They have yet to decide what to do with the Literacy 12 Assessment.

University Entrance Requirements• Entrance requirements have changed over the last few years and will continue to do

so.

• It is imperative to check and recheck specific university/college admission requirements

• A brief review of entrance requirements to UBC and SFU for September 2021 will be available in Student Services.

• Universities come to Handsworth at lunchtime. Post-secondary institutions also offer open houses (BCIT Feb 19, Cap U March 11)

• American schools need SAT results – recommend writing in Grade 11SAT.org/start

University Entrance Requirements continued

• Many universities in BC, Alberta, Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes require 5 academic 12 courses (including English 12) . Some still require 4.

• UBC requires 6 grade 12 courses (one can be non-academic)

• Both UBC & SFU are using a core assessment

• Capilano University – offers a variety of diploma and degree programs• A stepping stone with university transfer programs• Workplace Math 11/12 accepted as entrance for most programs• Language 11 not necessary• 3 Grade 12 courses

Scholarships

Scholarships come from three areas: post-secondary institutions, external organizations/government, and Handsworth Secondary

Handsworth Scholarship Bursary application gives students access to over $80,000 in grant money

• Decisions are based on various factors and not only grades – including volunteer experience, community roles, clubs etc.

• Be sure to look at the criteria as some awards are for specific areas• Deadline is sometime in February 2021
