Departing from thirty degree Australian heat and arriving in minus two
degree, rain filled and snow covered Vancouver I could not have been
happier. My name is Merryn and I am a second year Bachelor of
Tourism Management student from the University Of Western Sydney,
Australia. I have been studying at Capilano for the spring and fall
semesters and I absolutely love it here. I’ve made friends from all over
the world and learnt a lot about Canada and myself. I’ve realized that I
need to take life less seriously and just say ‘yes’ to the opportunities that
present themselves, I am only here for the year so why not?
For me the biggest challenge of my exchange was having all of my
friends from the spring semester leave and me still being here until new
students arrived for the fall. Luckily for me I have made great friends in
both semesters. As I am studying Tourism Management my hopes are
that my experiences studying abroad will be useful for the career I
choose to take, I don’t know exactly what I want to do yet but travelling
will definitely be a part of my chosen career. Through studying
abroad I have broadened my horizons, met great people and had
experiences I will never forget, I would recommend an exchange to
anyone looking to have a year as fulfilled as my own.

TYLER AT THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA DURING HIS CHINA FIELD STUDY TOUR
TYLER BREICHER
In May of 2012 I got the opportunity to take part in an amazing, life
changing opportunity, the China Field Study. Three weeks in China
was just what the doctor ordered in the middle of my quest for
education. While in China I made some amazing friends and we got
the opportunity to travel to places that most people only dream of
seeing. The Great Wall was definitely the highlight of my trip. At one
point I was all alone sitting on the wall just looking over the edge into
a valley filled with trees just enjoying the peace, which is something I
do not feel on a regular basis as a full time student. Hiking the Great
Wall, learning about culture, take amazing pictures and spend time
with new friends, priceless.
To top it all off I met a girl. She helped me land an opportunity to
return to China and work as an Intern for two months. I got a job with
Ipsos, a multinational company with an office in Guangzhou. The
opportunity to go live and work in China opened my eyes to a new
way of life, culture, and business. I feel this experience has helped
me grow as a person, helped me gain a competitive advantage in
future work opportunities. The China Field Study has helped me
prepare for my next big journey, six months studying abroad in
Switzerland, but that is another story, for another time.

Experience Personal
Growth. You can experience
significant personal growth by
studying abroad. Students
who study abroad discover
that in the process of learning
about other countries and
culture they end up learning
more about themselves in
ways that simply cannot be
replicated in the comforting
and familiar confines of an
American campus.
Learn Another
Language. Students can
better learn another language
by studying abroad.
Immersion in another
language through study
abroad is one of the best
ways to gain proficiency in
that language.
