The euro is offering visitors to Spain good value again, the weather has warmed up, and construction is at its busi-est since the crash and it´s going to be a great summer! However, you wouldn´t think that by reading some of the local papers would you? Why is it they seem to focus on the doom and gloom? Es-pecially my old paper The Courier…but then I do hear the Grim Reaper works there nowadays. It´s far too easy to do bad news and it takes a lot more effort to produce good, fact based pieces. There are a few exceptions – you´ve only got to read them to see which ones I mean – and some good reporters out there trying not to shoot all us businesses on the Costas in the foot…unlike the ones who take the easy route? It´s been one of those months…After going A*** over T** again dur-ing the night I’ve come to the decision, I either need a new rug...or a different colour dog…however, dogs aside (or not) we’ve reached

that time of year in Spain when we all get religious and head for the beach, lay down a towel and worship our Sun God having blessed ourselves with Ambre Soler beforehand. The last Friday of May I spent (unself-ishly) the whole day doing extensive research on behalf of all the expats out

there and one day I’ll publicise my conclusions on who serves the

way of looking at it, I guess.Last week I also had one of those dreams where you wake up and you´re actually thump-ing the pillow (or something) imagining it´s Simon Cowell (or someone). I was snoozing on the terrace (in my dream I was smooching with Cameron Diaz and I was a perfect gent…), and I awoke thinking I was being kissed, passionately. There’s got to be better ways of waking up from a nice dream while sun bathing than being French-kissed by a Labrador, and it´s put me off Miss Diaz…almost. And anyway, you have to question evolution when any dog can stick her head between her legs (in front of everyone), and sound like they´re enjoying it so much...Back to the grind I guess. hy does it seem that the resident does

not pay any Capital Gains Tax?

Often I have come across a misunderstanding that I wish to clear in this article. I am talking about the rumour that residents do not pay any capital gains tax be-cause no money is stopped from the sales price to pay to the tax man.

This is not the case. Both, residents and non residents, are subject to the capital gains tax and the tax bracket is identical. Only recently the tax bracket was raised from 19 to 21% and is to be applied for the tax years 2012 and 2013.

The difference is the due date for the presentation of the dec-laration. Residents declare the said tax in their annual income tax declaration, in the year fol-

lowing the sale, whereas non-residents have a deadline of 4 months from the date of sale. And, of course, the major dif-ference is that no percentage is taken from the sales price if the seller is resident.

This is quite understandable. A resident foreigner is treated equally to a Spanish national

regarding the presentation of the taxes since they are both subject to pay their income tax in Spain.

The due date for the presentation of residents’ an-

nual tax declarations is the end of this month! Residents that have sold a property in 2011 will declare their capital gains in that very same declaration. Naturally, at the rate of 19% which was applicable for the year 2011.

not everyone and will have pay taxes on their decla-

ration and the odds are that if you’ve retired here in

Spain and are receiving your pension from abroad,

you might not have to pay depending on certain

requirements.

If you have retired to Spain and stay in the country

more than 183 days then you too must declare your

income here and not in the UK. You will also benefit

from the special International Treaty between Spain

and the UK. There are still an awful lot of people liv-

ing in Spain but still declaring their incomes in the UK

which means that could be missing out on saving a

lot of money just because

they don’t realise that they can do their declaration

here and take advantage of the fiscal benefits such

as inheritance tax for residents, or just paying less

taxes, for example.

Why?Obviously the Spanish government needs taxes and,

if you are receiving an income you need to be legal.

Even if you know there will be nothing to pay – you’ll

get yourself in the system (which, trust me on this

one, only make life easier) so when the day comes

that someone (we’ll call him ‘Johnny Foreigner’)

dies in Spain Johnny’s family will have a simple task

dealing with the fiscal (the Will etc.) matters than

someone who has never gone into the system.

ExceptionsTo keep it simple (remember it’s me writing this…)

here are some exceptions to the rule of ‘Having to

declare’ but remember also what I said earlier about

there being no harm (only benefits) in getting into the

system.

If you earn less than 22,000€ annually (from one em-

ployer and are already having tax deducted) or (if you

have incomes from several place) that none of those

exceed 1,500€ annually.

If you have received profits from shares or dividends

of less than 1,600€ per year (this even applies if you

have, for example, sold a car for a profit privately).

Salaries or incomes below 11,200€ (usually pen-

sioners) are exempt but remember also that if you

are employed your employer is obliged to deduct a

minimum of 15% from your wage packet to withhold

for the taxman here in Spain. If that does not happen,

because your pension comes from the UK and is

over 11.200 euros (and it has not been tax-deducted

in Spain) - even though you only have one pension,

you must to declare your income in Spain.

Compensation from a road traffic accident is also

exempt from the tax office but again – it’s worth

declaring it anyway.

Anyone receiving unemployment benefit (up to

15,000€ - who’s getting that much..?!) is also free

from deductions.

How?To make sure you don’t need to pay tax on your

income, or indeed reduce your bill at the end of the fi-

nancial year, it’s highly recommended that you speak

to someone who is experienced in the Spanish tax

system – or you could end up paying more than you

need to!

Pedro told me that there are often an array of options

for people to reduce their tax bill (or even pay nothing

at all) if their case is looked at professionally and

with an experienced eye. For example, someone who

has their parents living in the same house can have

certain funds deducted from their end of year tax bill

as can anyone who has perhaps had to adapt their

house for disabled access.

As ever, with any tax office, things are a little more

complicated than we’d like but by dealing with

someone in the know it often works out far simpler

(and less expensive) to have someone who knows

what they are doing look after those (very) important

fiscal matters that can often become an expensive

nightmare in the wrong hands – ours.

From my own experience, the fee charged to make

my declaration was less than Pedro managed to

reduce my tax bill after showing me exactly what I

could and couldn’t claim and therefore the cost of

doing it properly has cost me nothing…in fact I’ve

made a little on the deal, now…do I declare that…?

If you have any questions or queries about the

upcoming ‘Renta’ and whether indeed you should be

declaring your income – call either Pedro or Ignacio

and they’ll put you straight. And the benefit for All

Abroad readers is that they’ll give you first consulta-

tion free – so what have you got to lose apart from a

headache from those piles of paper!

KEEPING IT SIMPLE IN SPAINWe all want an easy (ish)

life here in Spain but not

always that easy is it?

Especially when it comes

to the man with the rubber

stamp. And let’s face it,

the tremendous amount of

paperwork currently run-

ning through the Spanish

bureaucracy system not

only brings (several) South

American countries’ rain

forests down, but assur-

edly their unemployment

numbers too. But that’s the

system we have to work

with but with some expert

help you can make sure

that you’re not one of the

ones rushing to the bank

on the 20th of June to pay a

tax bill at the last minute, or

worse still a fine.

With the annual tax dec-

laration (Renta) deadline

coming soon, on 30th June,

anyone with an income

should be getting their

declaration in order (if

you really want that ‘easy’

life) so we asked Alicante

lawyers, Ignacio and Pedro

to once again step in and

explain just what the ‘Renta’

is and who should be get-

ting the pens out to fill in a

form or two.

Who?

Everyone who has an

income while living here in

Spain needs to make a dec-

laration whether it is from

a salary or from a pension

in another country. Now

before you start worrying,

About Pedro & IgnacioThe two spent a year at South-ampton Institute of interna-tional law so it’s no surprise that they speak English so well. Later, having studied law together at Alicante university, Pedro and Ignacio teamed up and formed the highly success-ful Pellicer & Heredia Solicitors (based in the same building as the British Consulate) and using their understanding of British people have built a firm of three offices (so far) with a fourth opening in Ciudad Quesada very soon –and all the staff speak English, very handy.

The taxman cometh…Dave Bull

discovers the easy way to live

a trouble-free (as far as the Tax man is

concerned) life in Spain.

Whether you pay

tax or not a FREE

Fiscal Check UP

with the profes-

sionals is an offer

not to be missed!

By Dave Bull

I don’t know about you

but when someone

mentions tax affairs and

Spanish bureaucracy

in the same sentence I

usually need to sit down

or have a drink, or both.

But when you´ve had a

chat with some experts

who can put it into plain

and simple language

(English, Spanish – your

choice) it all starts to

make sense and, when

you also discover that not

only will it cost very little

to get yourself legally and

fiscally sorted in Spain

– well, it´s a no-brainer

isn´t it?

For example one couple

who went to see them

were paying tax on their

income (that was paid

to them via the UK) in

Britain. But once the

lawyers had taken a look

at their financial affairs

they were pleased to find

that they could register

in Spain and not have to

pay any tax here at all.

That meant the small fee

they paid for the service

was covered by their tax savings quickly…in

other words, it didn´t cost them anything for the

advice and they have saved money!

Ignacio confirmed: “The Law states that all the

residents in Spain should do their worldwide

declaration in Spain. This means that if you pay

taxes at source (UK), you should register here

in Spain, inform England that you should be

NO TAX there (NT reference) and declare your

income in Spain. This formula will avoid double

taxation. There are some pensions from which

the tax cannot be removed, especially those who

worked for the Government, but you will still

need to do the income tax declaration in Spain if

you are here more than 183 days and reach the

income limits scale.

FISCAL RESIDENT The thing is that even if you do not reach the

limit of the scale (11200€ for those who receive

pensions from abroad), we recommend you

either lodge your tax declaration to confirm

you are a fiscal resident in Spain every year, or

renew the fiscal certificate to prove you are fis-

cal resident in Spain. Proving fiscal residency will

make you save money on inheritance tax than

otherwise, as a non resident, will never apply

the benefits. “

It´s not often we can think about going to see a

lawyer and saving money is it? To be fair a law-

yer’s lot is, more often than not, having to deal

with all those difficult matters, which always

seems so expensive – mainly because we don´t

understand the law – which is why we pay them

in the first place.

FREE CONSULTATIONHowever, the guys and girls at Pellicer & Heredia

will not only offer you a FREE first consultation

of you mention All Abroad magazine, but they´ll

also, and more than likely, save you money.

Put those two together and the fact that you´ll

have peace of mind knowing your fiscal affairs in

Spain are in order.

New openings means new opportunities for Quesada and beyond

By the time you read this Pellicer & Heredia´s

new offices in Avda de Naciones (opposite the

Spice Hut) will be open and buzzing to the sound

of ringing phones and professional chatter. If

you´ve not met them yet just pop along and

have a chat with the friendly staff and (thank

you) accessible lawyers, Pedro and Ignacio,

who´ll quite happily have a no-obligation chat

about whatever you like.

We were there for the opening day on 18th of

May when it seemed as if half of Quesada (and

beyond) had come along to meet the guys!

It´s not surprising seeing as they are two of

Alicante´s busiest lawyers – especially among

expats, their speciality – and with four other

offices around the region the boys are certainly

kept busy looking after a lot of expats´ affairs.

That´s why they´ve emerged as the top lawyers

around for foreigners living in Spain having built

up years of experience dealing with the intrica-

cies involved in the infamous Spanish bureauc-

racy system.

not everyone and will have pay taxes on their decla-

ration and the odds are that if you’ve retired here in

Spain and are receiving your pension from abroad,

you might not have to pay depending on certain

requirements.

If you have retired to Spain and stay in the country

more than 183 days then you too must declare your

income here and not in the UK. You will also benefit

from the special International Treaty between Spain

and the UK. There are still an awful lot of people liv-

ing in Spain but still declaring their incomes in the UK

which means that could be missing out on saving a

lot of money just because

they don’t realise that they can do their declaration

here and take advantage of the fiscal benefits such

as inheritance tax for residents, or just paying less

taxes, for example.

Why?Obviously the Spanish government needs taxes and,

if you are receiving an income you need to be legal.

Even if you know there will be nothing to pay – you’ll

get yourself in the system (which, trust me on this

one, only make life easier) so when the day comes

that someone (we’ll call him ‘Johnny Foreigner’)

dies in Spain Johnny’s family will have a simple task

dealing with the fiscal (the Will etc.) matters than

someone who has never gone into the system.

ExceptionsTo keep it simple (remember it’s me writing this…)

here are some exceptions to the rule of ‘Having to

declare’ but remember also what I said earlier about

there being no harm (only benefits) in getting into the

system.

If you earn less than 22,000€ annually (from one em-

ployer and are already having tax deducted) or (if you

have incomes from several place) that none of those

exceed 1,500€ annually.

If you have received profits from shares or dividends

of less than 1,600€ per year (this even applies if you

have, for example, sold a car for a profit privately).

Salaries or incomes below 11,200€ (usually pen-

sioners) are exempt but remember also that if you

are employed your employer is obliged to deduct a

minimum of 15% from your wage packet to withhold

for the taxman here in Spain. If that does not happen,

because your pension comes from the UK and is

over 11.200 euros (and it has not been tax-deducted

in Spain) - even though you only have one pension,

you must to declare your income in Spain.

Compensation from a road traffic accident is also

exempt from the tax office but again – it’s worth

declaring it anyway.

Anyone receiving unemployment benefit (up to

15,000€ - who’s getting that much..?!) is also free

from deductions.

How?To make sure you don’t need to pay tax on your

income, or indeed reduce your bill at the end of the fi-

nancial year, it’s highly recommended that you speak

to someone who is experienced in the Spanish tax

system – or you could end up paying more than you

need to!

Pedro told me that there are often an array of options

for people to reduce their tax bill (or even pay nothing

at all) if their case is looked at professionally and

with an experienced eye. For example, someone who

has their parents living in the same house can have

certain funds deducted from their end of year tax bill

as can anyone who has perhaps had to adapt their

house for disabled access.

As ever, with any tax office, things are a little more

complicated than we’d like but by dealing with

someone in the know it often works out far simpler

(and less expensive) to have someone who knows

what they are doing look after those (very) important

fiscal matters that can often become an expensive

nightmare in the wrong hands – ours.

From my own experience, the fee charged to make

my declaration was less than Pedro managed to

reduce my tax bill after showing me exactly what I

could and couldn’t claim and therefore the cost of

doing it properly has cost me nothing…in fact I’ve

made a little on the deal, now…do I declare that…?

If you have any questions or queries about the

upcoming ‘Renta’ and whether indeed you should be

declaring your income – call either Pedro or Ignacio

and they’ll put you straight. And the benefit for All

Abroad readers is that they’ll give you first consulta-

tion free – so what have you got to lose apart from a

headache from those piles of paper!

KEEPING IT SIMPLE IN SPAINWe all want an easy (ish)

life here in Spain but not

always that easy is it?

Especially when it comes

to the man with the rubber

stamp. And let’s face it,

the tremendous amount of

paperwork currently run-

ning through the Spanish

bureaucracy system not

only brings (several) South

American countries’ rain

forests down, but assur-

edly their unemployment

numbers too. But that’s the

system we have to work

with but with some expert

help you can make sure

that you’re not one of the

ones rushing to the bank

on the 20th of June to pay a

tax bill at the last minute, or

worse still a fine.

With the annual tax dec-

laration (Renta) deadline

coming soon, on 30th June,

anyone with an income

should be getting their

declaration in order (if

you really want that ‘easy’

life) so we asked Alicante

lawyers, Ignacio and Pedro

to once again step in and

explain just what the ‘Renta’

is and who should be get-

ting the pens out to fill in a

form or two.

Who?

Everyone who has an

income while living here in

Spain needs to make a dec-

laration whether it is from

a salary or from a pension

in another country. Now

before you start worrying,

About Pedro & IgnacioThe two spent a year at South-ampton Institute of interna-tional law so it’s no surprise that they speak English so well. Later, having studied law together at Alicante university, Pedro and Ignacio teamed up and formed the highly success-ful Pellicer & Heredia Solicitors (based in the same building as the British Consulate) and using their understanding of British people have built a firm of three offices (so far) with a fourth opening in Ciudad Quesada very soon –and all the staff speak English, very handy.

The taxman cometh…Dave Bull

discovers the easy way to live

a trouble-free (as far as the Tax man is

concerned) life in Spain.

Whether you pay

tax or not a FREE

Fiscal Check UP

with the profes-

sionals is an offer

not to be missed!

By Dave Bull

I don’t know about you

but when someone

mentions tax affairs and

Spanish bureaucracy

in the same sentence I

usually need to sit down

or have a drink, or both.

But when you´ve had a

chat with some experts

who can put it into plain

and simple language

(English, Spanish – your

choice) it all starts to

make sense and, when

you also discover that not

only will it cost very little

to get yourself legally and

fiscally sorted in Spain

– well, it´s a no-brainer

isn´t it?

For example one couple

who went to see them

were paying tax on their

income (that was paid

to them via the UK) in

Britain. But once the

lawyers had taken a look

at their financial affairs

they were pleased to find

that they could register

in Spain and not have to

pay any tax here at all.

That meant the small fee

they paid for the service

was covered by their tax savings quickly…in

other words, it didn´t cost them anything for the

advice and they have saved money!

Ignacio confirmed: “The Law states that all the

residents in Spain should do their worldwide

declaration in Spain. This means that if you pay

taxes at source (UK), you should register here

in Spain, inform England that you should be

NO TAX there (NT reference) and declare your

income in Spain. This formula will avoid double

taxation. There are some pensions from which

the tax cannot be removed, especially those who

worked for the Government, but you will still

need to do the income tax declaration in Spain if

you are here more than 183 days and reach the

income limits scale.

FISCAL RESIDENT The thing is that even if you do not reach the

limit of the scale (11200€ for those who receive

pensions from abroad), we recommend you

either lodge your tax declaration to confirm

you are a fiscal resident in Spain every year, or

renew the fiscal certificate to prove you are fis-

cal resident in Spain. Proving fiscal residency will

make you save money on inheritance tax than

otherwise, as a non resident, will never apply

the benefits. “

It´s not often we can think about going to see a

lawyer and saving money is it? To be fair a law-

yer’s lot is, more often than not, having to deal

with all those difficult matters, which always

seems so expensive – mainly because we don´t

understand the law – which is why we pay them

in the first place.

FREE CONSULTATIONHowever, the guys and girls at Pellicer & Heredia

will not only offer you a FREE first consultation

of you mention All Abroad magazine, but they´ll

also, and more than likely, save you money.

Put those two together and the fact that you´ll

have peace of mind knowing your fiscal affairs in

Spain are in order.

New openings means new opportunities for Quesada and beyond

By the time you read this Pellicer & Heredia´s

new offices in Avda de Naciones (opposite the

Spice Hut) will be open and buzzing to the sound

of ringing phones and professional chatter. If

you´ve not met them yet just pop along and

have a chat with the friendly staff and (thank

you) accessible lawyers, Pedro and Ignacio,

who´ll quite happily have a no-obligation chat

about whatever you like.

We were there for the opening day on 18th of

May when it seemed as if half of Quesada (and

beyond) had come along to meet the guys!

It´s not surprising seeing as they are two of

Alicante´s busiest lawyers – especially among

expats, their speciality – and with four other

offices around the region the boys are certainly

kept busy looking after a lot of expats´ affairs.

That´s why they´ve emerged as the top lawyers

around for foreigners living in Spain having built

up years of experience dealing with the intrica-

cies involved in the infamous Spanish bureauc-

racy system.

SAVE YOUR PC’S LIFE!

HOW TO SET POWER MANAGEMENT ON YOUR PC

When you leave your PC running but are not using it, you can set the length of time your hard drive(s) and monitor run before they go to an ‘idle’ state.

Slowing down the spin rate of a hard drive from a high to a low speed, reduces the wear on it bearings.

Turning off the monitor when not in use saves a significant amount of power. It is by far consumes more power than any other component in your PC.

To set these options, follow the instruc-tions below:

On your PC click ‘Start’, then ‘Settings’ and then ‘Control Panel’,

Double click the Power Options icon in the control panel and a window appears with a number of tabs across the top labeled: Power Schemes, Alarms, Power Meter, Ad-vanced and Hibernate. There may be vari-ances in these options depending on which Windows operating system you have.

Double-click the ‘Power Schemes’ tab.

At the top of the window that opens you can select different modes to which you assign hard drive and monitor activity. There are usually three there with preas-signed names: ‘Desktop/Home’, ‘Laptop’ and ‘Always on’. Select Desktop/Home and let’s set it up.

At the bottom of the window you can set the time to run before turning off your monitor and your hard drive(s). This time is measured from the last keystroke or mouse movement you make.

To set your hard drive running time, se-lect the time you want from the drop down menu next to ‘Turn off hard disks’. Select a time that you think you will not exceed in your typical routine. I set mine at 45 minutes, which means the drive will slow down 45 minutes after tha last time it was accessed. The hard drive(s) wake up when you ac-cess a file or when some other activity oc-curs that requires access to it.

The monitor running time is set similarly with the ‘Turn off Monitor’ drop down box. I set this at 20 minutes. So if you don’t press a key or move your mouse, the screen goes dark in 20 min-utes. It wakes up again when you move your mouse or press any key on your keyboard.

Click ‘OK’ or ‘Apply’ to save the settings.

To setup another mode, go back to step 4, select it and repeat steps 5-7.

To use another mode, select it in step 4 click ‘OK’ and your PC will run with it, until you change it.

Computer Threats It is imperative that you keep your PC protect-ed as best you can at all times!

When the Internet first caught on with the general public in the mid 1990s it was a rela-tively safe place. Since then some dangerous places have sprung up within it. With world-wide reach and virtual anonymity it has at-tracted many destructive, dishonest people. Some of them create viruses, worms, spyware, adware, keyloggers and the other forms of virulent, invasive code known as malware that cause computer problems. Some of them use this code and various techniques to secretly steal your identity by gaining access to your personal information!

Annoying pop-ups, machine slowdowns and PC crashes are often a result of malware. Hackers monitor Internet traffic and look for unprotected PCs that they can infect.

Even worse if your PC is compromised it can without your knowledge become a slave ma-chine that further spreads these malware pro-grams to other unprotected PCs!

What can you do? .... A number of things!

Plaza Mayor

GRAN ALACANT

Plaza Mayor in Gran Alacant - looking good for Summer!

Times are tough. And even more so when you

discover that the fees you´ve been paying for

the upkeep of your business´s location are

not in fact being used for that purpose at all.

But that´s exactly what happened to several

businesses in Plaza Mayor in Gran Alacant

who were left without lighting in the square

and broken, and arguably dangerous, en-

trance steps that have gone unrepaired for a

number of years.

However, far from moaning about their lot

(nothing seems to be happening with the

administration of the place) most of the busi-

nesses in Plaza Mayor have teamed up to

make the place what it should be – a great

place for all the family to go to…even the

dog.

Rather than battle with each other, the busi-

nesses have sat down and agreed that this

fabulous square is a great place for fami-

lies, or those on their own perhaps, to rest

up, take some refreshment and meet some

friendly people. All it needs is a little TLC (ok,

some bricks too) which the businesses have

already in motion and the Plaza

Mayor will be, once again, an enjoyable place

to go to.

going by the name of Times Square

where tasty grub is also on the

menu.

You´ll notice too Gran Alacant’s busiest

vets are here too – what better place to

get Rex shave d for summer while you

wait outside, in the shade, with a glass

of crushed grapes? Talking of busy, I

know Silvia and Isabel at FAB, no, it´s

not anything to do with Thunderbirds

(Foreigners Advisory Bureau) who are

always running around looking after the

fiscal side of things for expats. That´s it

really, as with most things – the proof of

We´re not just talking

about drinking here either

(although that obviously

is enjoyable), for example

how about the best curry in the area from

Gran Alacant´s original Indian restaurant,

Saffron or traditional (and tasty) fish and

chips from the friendly Maureen and John

at Darby´s Fish and Chips. If alcohol is on

your mind (although both of those places

serve it too) then just opposite you have

the choice of two typically comfy English

Bars, Rumours and The Hole in the Wall,

while next door is a traditional Irish Bar

the pudding is in the

eating (I hear Gavin

at Times Square does

a mean apple pie…) so

you really should get

down there and try

things for yourself and

meet a great bunch of

people working very

hard to give us a

nice place to go and

do things…like drink,

bless them I say!

Seriously try and give

the businesses in

Plaza Mayor your

support as they

go through the

process of fixing

up what is one

of the best places to

visit in Gran Alacant.

If you’d like to feature your business or businesses in a spread like this - just give as a call on 606 540 408 or 96 669 5160

Plaza Mayor

GRAN ALACANT

Plaza Mayor in Gran Alacant - looking good for Summer!

Times are tough. And even more so when you

discover that the fees you´ve been paying for

the upkeep of your business´s location are

not in fact being used for that purpose at all.

But that´s exactly what happened to several

businesses in Plaza Mayor in Gran Alacant

who were left without lighting in the square

and broken, and arguably dangerous, en-

trance steps that have gone unrepaired for a

number of years.

However, far from moaning about their lot

(nothing seems to be happening with the

administration of the place) most of the busi-

nesses in Plaza Mayor have teamed up to

make the place what it should be – a great

place for all the family to go to…even the

dog.

Rather than battle with each other, the busi-

nesses have sat down and agreed that this

fabulous square is a great place for fami-

lies, or those on their own perhaps, to rest

up, take some refreshment and meet some

friendly people. All it needs is a little TLC (ok,

some bricks too) which the businesses have

already in motion and the Plaza

Mayor will be, once again, an enjoyable place

to go to.

going by the name of Times Square

where tasty grub is also on the

menu.

You´ll notice too Gran Alacant’s busiest

vets are here too – what better place to

get Rex shave d for summer while you

wait outside, in the shade, with a glass

of crushed grapes? Talking of busy, I

know Silvia and Isabel at FAB, no, it´s

not anything to do with Thunderbirds

(Foreigners Advisory Bureau) who are

always running around looking after the

fiscal side of things for expats. That´s it

really, as with most things – the proof of

We´re not just talking

about drinking here either

(although that obviously

is enjoyable), for example

how about the best curry in the area from

Gran Alacant´s original Indian restaurant,

Saffron or traditional (and tasty) fish and

chips from the friendly Maureen and John

at Darby´s Fish and Chips. If alcohol is on

your mind (although both of those places

serve it too) then just opposite you have

the choice of two typically comfy English

Bars, Rumours and The Hole in the Wall,

while next door is a traditional Irish Bar

the pudding is in the

eating (I hear Gavin

at Times Square does

a mean apple pie…) so

you really should get

down there and try

things for yourself and

meet a great bunch of

people working very

hard to give us a

nice place to go and

do things…like drink,

bless them I say!

Seriously try and give

the businesses in

Plaza Mayor your

support as they

go through the

process of fixing

up what is one

of the best places to

visit in Gran Alacant.

Welcome to our all new Entertainment Guide. Let me start off by introducing myself my name is Mandy O’Hagan and I own a very professional enter-tainment agency here on the Costa Blanca called Stars in Bars. All Abroad and myself realised that what’s miss-ing out here is a great entertainment guide with news of what’s going to be happening and future events to look out for with an easy to follow gig guide so you guys know what’s happening and more importantly..Where and when, so by bringing you this great guide every month and letting you all know about the fantastic events coming up this summer hopefully you won’t miss a thing!!

Well this month we have street parties a plenty happening everywhere for the Queens Diamond Jubilee, on Tuesday 5th Entre Naranjas are hold-ing a great days entertainment with music sup-plied by Emily Hullmann and an olden day music quiz finishing off with the very talented Matt Christian, also on Sunday 3rd Torrevieja town hall are having a huge party in the Park of Nations

people are invited to bring their own picnic, there will be an array of bars there serving all types of cold drinks and the profit from the bars is going to the local Alzheimer’s Association AFA, from 6pm there will be a number of local artists and groups performing all free of charge including dance shows, Morris Dancers, The Phoenix Concert Band, Nick Gold, Maria O’Hara, Keely C and many more, so if your going to one of the many big organised parties or you are just holding your own street party where you live then have a great time guys and raise a glass or two for sixty years reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Well that’s me finished for this month so if you’re a bar or an entertainer and want to appear in the gig guide or you have any events coming up that you would like me to tell everyone about then please contact me by email on [email protected] or call me on 685302529 or just visit my website www.starsinbars.org

LA MARINA URB WHAT A BARGAIN !!!

SUMMER OFFERS

Dave Bull talks to La Marina estate agents IPG and discovers some great properties at even greater prices on the Urb’.

The newspapers may well be full of doom and gloom but here on the Costa Blanca there is always some good news for expats to make the most of. For example in La Marina, which – by the way – have some of the most beauti-ful beaches on the coast, there are bargains to be had!Property prices have steadied but some people still want to sell up and move on, and quickly, and that means that there are some great properties to be had – at very reasonable prices.

I’ve spoken to local experts IPG who have been trading in the area for almost ten years now and they showed me just some of the great offers they have at the moment. For example on La Marina Urb (REF 548) there is a beautiful (detached) three bedroom, two bathroom house tucked away in a nice quiet

location. This used to be a show house with a won-derful landscaped mature garden in a 500m2 plot. It has master bedroom with en suite, a very nice kitchen and separate utility area and upstairs a sun-catching solarium. This place comes fully furnished and you could get

all this for just 199,000€, not bad eh?

Another place Anne McGregor showed me on the Urb’ was a little smaller but the price must be attractive to anyone looking! Just 64,950€ (REF 457) could net a buyer a two bedroom, two bathroom home in the sun with a solarium, terrace, dining room and air con already installed!

Other homes have been improved since first built and a tasteful three bedroom, two bath-room quad style home that I looked around certainly fell into that category. With a decent sized solarium and an en suite in the master bedroom this part-furnished property is only a very short walk from the communal pool too. Up for sale for only 104,995€ (REF 545) I’d

suggest anyone looking should take a look at this one as my words wont do it the justice it deserves.

In, or around, the same sort of price range Anne showed me a few more that could eas-ily be someone’s bargain home in the sun! (REF 602) is similar in description to the one above this place was absolutely immaculate with storage room also and again is well

worth a look – especially for the asking price of 119,500€.

Another of similar price and condition (RF 601) is a three bedroom, two bathroom Isabella style property which is on two floors and comes fur-nished and with an easy to maintain

gar- den for 117,500€.

If those are little more than you’d consider then how about a three bedroom, 0ne bathroom quad style home in a quiet location? (REF 568). Fully furnished with off road parking, a communal pool and a lovely garden this place will cost a lucky buyer just 89,000€ - now that is a bargain!

That’s all folks… Anne and Alan at IPG tell me they have many more like these too – so make the most of Spain and snap up a bargain before the prices rise inevitably again!

Contact Anne or Alan on 96 679 5233 for any of these proper-ties of if you are looking for something that you haven’t seen here.

A worrying thought for 2012 !10 years ago Bob Hope died5 years ago Johnny Cash diedA couple of months ago Steve Jobs died

A few weeks ago Jimmy Saville died

Now we have no Hope,

JAN, SUE, AND MARY HAVEN’T SEEN EACH OTHER SINCE LEAVING SCHOOL.

They rediscover each other via Friends Reunited, and arrange to meet for lunch.

Jan arrives first, wearing a beige Versace dress.

She orders a bottle of Pinot Grigio.

Sue arrives shortly afterward, wearing a grey Chanel number.

After the initial hugs and kisses she joins Jan in a glass of wine.

Then Mary walks in, wearing a faded old tee-shirt, blue jeans and boots.

She too shares the wine.

Jan explains that after leaving school and attending Oxford University, she met and mar-

ried Timothy, with whom she has a beautiful daughter.

Timothy is a partner in one of London’s leading law firms.

They live in a 4000 sq ft apartment on Park Lane, where Susanna, the daughter, attends

drama school. They have a second home in Portugal.

Sue relates that she graduated from Cambridge University, studied to become a doctor

and became a surgeon. Her husband, Clive, is a leading financial investment banker in

the City. They live in the Surrey stockbroker belt and have a second home in Italy.

Mary explains that she after she left school at 17, she ran off with her boyfriend, Mark.

They run a tropical bird park in Essex and grow their own vegetables. Mark can stand

five parrots, side by side, on his erect penis.

Halfway down the third bottle of wine and several hours later, Jan blurts out that her

husband is really a cashier at Tesco’s. They live in a small apartment in Bromley and

have a caravan parked on the front drive.

Sue, chastened and encouraged by her old friend’s honesty, explains that she and Clive

are both nursing care assistants in an old people’s home. They live in Peckham and

take camping holidays in Kent.

Mary admits that the fifth parrot has to stand on one leg.

YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATHS

Have a pencil & paper, or a calculator first. It takes less than a minute .Work this out as you read .Be sure you don’t read the bottom until you’ve worked it out! This is not one of those waste of time things, it’s fun.

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10)2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)3. Add 54. Multiply it by 50 -- I’ll wait while you get the calculator5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1762 ..If you haven’t, add 1761..6... Now subtract the four digit year that you were born. You should have a three digit numberThe first digit of this was your original number(I.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week). The next two numbers areYOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!)THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2012) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND

WHILE IT LASTS.
