ObservationsMen• Look more refined and

mature with their age.• The gray hair adds to

their handsomeness.• Natural Aging, not

much work done, if any, to look younger

Women• Look more wrinkled with

their age.• The gray and lighter-

colored hair makes them look less attractive.

• Plastic Surgery and tons of makeup applied to attempt to look younger.

Essential Question

Why do women have to focus on maintaining outward appearance as they age while men can carry on with their lives and receive more respect with their age?

Page 12: Handsome or Hag? The Social Impact of Aging Between Men and Women

What Society Says• Women are shunned and ridiculed as they

age unless they focus on their appearance.• Society tells women to be “wrinkle-free” and

have colored hair.• Meanwhile, men are being accepted for what

they already look like and are not condemned for looking older.

Main Aspects of Outward Appearance

• Hair Color• Wrinkles• Weight/Diet• Fashion

Page 14: Handsome or Hag? The Social Impact of Aging Between Men and Women

Hair ColorMen

• Gray hair is a sign of age and respect.

• Because of this, many men do not worry about dying their hair to cover up the grays.

• Having a mixture of gray and natural color is also approved.

Women

• When gray hair start showing up, chaos arises.

• Women are shunned and not looked as well upon, so they feel compelled to dye their hair.

• They never want their gray hair to be shown.

WrinklesMen

• Few worry about men getting wrinkled.

• It is a natural occurrence and is usually ignored.

Women• Society condemns women for having wrinkles.

• Women are encouraged to buy all sorts of anti-aging creams and other items to remove wrinkles.

Weight and DietMen

• Men are not hit as hard when it comes to their diet and weight.

• When they are targeted to diet, advertisements usually show sports stars and “manly food.”

Women

• If women are not the “ideal weight,” they are ridiculed.

• They are bombarded with advertisements encouraging them to lose weight, even if they already look skinny.

FashionMen

• Men are not forced to dress in extravagant ways because they are already noticed and respected.

• They can wear a basic outfit of khakis and a button-up shirt and be just fine.

Women

• As demonstrated in “There is No Unmarked Woman” by Deborah Tannen, women cannot all dress similarly.

• Each woman is expected to have her own style and find a way to be noticed.

Analysis• Notice how ridiculous all the ways women

change just to please society and gain attention.

• Men can be themselves and have no worries, while women are under constant pressure to maintain an ideal outward appearance.

Page 19: Handsome or Hag? The Social Impact of Aging Between Men and Women

Analysis (cont.)• Why should women be judged on

outward appearance rather than outward actions?

• If society changes their beliefs about women, women could focus on performance and decision making.

Page 20: Handsome or Hag? The Social Impact of Aging Between Men and Women

Make a ChangeMen

• Encourage women to be themselves.

• Do not ridicule them for who they are and how they look.

Women • Be 100% natural.• Do not worry about

what society says.• Let it go.• Let actions be used to

describe who you really are.

It all starts with you!
