HAMSTEAD INFANT SCHOOL TANHOUSE AVE, GREAT BARR BIRMINGHAM B43 5AS Telephone number: 0121 357 1603 Head Teacher: Miss A. Day Chair of Governors: Mrs G. Dubay Hamstead Infant School is a Community Infant School for pupils aged 5-7 years. In addition, there is a Nursery, which offers part-time and full time places to children of 3-4 years of age. Parents are welcome to visit the school and should contact the school to arrange a convenient time.

MISSION STATEMENT

Hamstead Infant School aims to provide a range of broad, balanced and enjoyable experiences for all, encouraging the children to extend their knowledge and skills. They are encouraged to develop a positive self-image, so that they meet challenges confidently and become independent learners. All children become aware of the choices they need to make in order to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

OUR SCHOOL

Our school opened in 1949. It aims to achieve and maintain high standards in all aspects of school life. We believe in developing the ‘whole child’, not just academically but personally, socially, spiritually and through encouraging them to achieve the best they can in all aspects of learning. Hamstead Infant School is a friendly, happy community where children and teachers learn in a stimulating atmosphere. The school prides itself on its expertise and range of opportunities it can offer children in the early years. It provides children with an excellent start to their education and prepares them well for the demands of moving on to junior school. As a Forest school we actively encourage our children to engage with the outdoors, take risks and learn new skills. Parents and the community are encouraged to take an active interest in the school and parental involvement in school is welcomed. As part of ‘Every Child Matters’ we regularly seek ideas and input from all parents through questionnaires and discussions.

All children under 5 are taught as Foundation Stage. This enables Nursery and Reception children to mix socially and intellectually in practical learning situations. The Foundation stage follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Key Stage 1 consists of Year 1 and Year 2. All children follow appropriate programmes of study to enable them to attain the targets and levels outlined in the National Curriculum. A continuity of education is maintained from Nursery through Infant School and on to Junior School with children’s progress being monitored carefully at all stages. There is effective transition at all stages which has been recognised by Ofsted. We recognise that within our community we have children from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. We aim to promote racial equality and harmony through school policies and good practice, which enable all children to benefit from the widest possible educational provision.

OFSTED

The school underwent an Ofsted inspection in January 2019. Hamstead Infant School continues to be a “good” school that is ‘a welcoming and friendly place where pupils feel safe and happy.’ The Ofsted team noted many excellent features and below are some comments from our recent report.

The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection.

Children behave very well in lessons and around the school. Even the youngest children are responsible and sensible.

All pupils are engaged in their learning throughout the school.

The lively environment in the Nursery supports learning well.

The school builds very effective partnerships with parents. One parent’s comment summarised the views of many: ‘Every child matters to all teachers at the school and they should be proud of their achievements.’

Teachers work closely with the other adults in their classrooms to make sure they understand what the pupils are learning and how they can support them. As a result, pupils are well supported to make strong progress, particularly those with special educational needs and/ or disabilities (SEND)

Children feel safe and parents are confident that children are safe in school. Children say that bullying doesn’t happen, because they are friends with everyone.

Please see our school website for the full Ofsted report www.hamstead-inf.sandwell.sch.uk COLLECTIVE WORSHIP The School is non-denominational and school assembly themes are based upon developing caring attitudes towards other people in society. Daily assembly sets the tone of the school, reinforces a positive attitude and lets children explore spiritual and moral values. Collective worship will be wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian nature, but will draw upon other faiths and traditions as appropriate to reflect the diverse cultural backgrounds within the school and its community. Each class will hold a class assembly once a term where parents are welcome to attend. This is an opportunity for children to celebrate their achievements and for parents to share in their learning. Friday is ‘Celebration Assembly’ day where we celebrate individual achievements and every half term each class teacher awards achievement certificates to a group of pupils. We also celebrate good attendance, good reading, outstanding work and outstanding behaviour in assemblies. If your child achieves a certificate or an award out of school they can bring it into school to share and celebrate during assembly time. We also celebrate birthdays during the daily assembly and children may bring in an appropriate birthday gift to show in assembly.

BREAKTIME The Government provide all Nursery and Infant children with free fruit every day. Free milk is available for pupils in Nursery and children under 5 in Reception. Parents can then continue to purchase milk for their child through the online ‘Cool Milk’ scheme. Water coolers are situated in the corridors for children to access water bottles can be purchased from the school office enabling all children to have free access to the water coolers during the day. Bottles are sent

home on Fridays to be washed. Parents need to be aware that we do have children in school with allergies, therefore we ask parents not to send in sweets or other food items unless requested by school for a special event. DINNER TIME Children have the option to stay for school dinners or they can bring a packed lunch. A letter will be sent out for you to indicate your choice. All infant children can have a Universal Free School Meal. Alternatively children can bring a packed lunch in a lunchbox clearly labelled with the child’s name. As we are a ‘Healthy School’ all packed lunches brought from home must consist of healthy options; sandwiches, fruit, salad, yoghurts are all acceptable. Sweets and chocolate are discouraged as part of a school lunchbox. All meals are eaten in the canteen dining room.

UNIFORM

School colours are navy blue/grey. Children need to dress practically and comfortably as their day will be active and varied. Simple, easy to change clothing and suitable fasteners on shoes (for the younger child) are best. Children need sensible school shoes, ill-fitting or inappropriate shoes often cause accidents and discomfort for your child. Please ensure your child’s school clothing is clearly marked with their name. ‘Uniforms Plus’ at Scott Arms Shopping Centre stock the complete range of uniform for the school. In addition, we get a small percentage of the profits from the company at the end of the school year, which goes towards school fund. You can order uniform from their website from May 2020 also. We also have a supply of good condition 2nd hand uniform with logo available from the school office. School Logo items cost £1.00. Labelled T-shirts, pumps and shorts should be worn for P.E. Your child’s P.E. kit needs to kept in a labelled drawstring bag and sent into school for all P.E. activities. We sell PE bags in the school office. Your child’s class teacher will notify you which days P.E. is taught. Please do not send children to school in jewellery as children cannot do P.E. or swimming in jewellery. Earrings must be removed or covered by plasters provided by parents. If your child does wear earrings, they must be small studs. School cannot be responsible for any loss of jewellery if worn during school time.

ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE

School rules are based on mutual respect for each other and are enforced using assertive discipline strategies. Sanctions are used as and when appropriate and can vary according to the nature of the incident. Rules and routines are regularly reinforced with the children to ensure we have a safe, happy and caring environment in school. All adults on the premises expect good behaviour and courtesy from children. No bullying, name calling, fighting or other anti-social behaviour will be accepted in the school or on the premises. All Teaching and Non Teaching staff in school promote assertive discipline, which encourages positive attitudes and behaviour. Parents are asked to co-operate with school in moderating any unacceptable behaviour and are asked to discuss and sign the Home/School agreement. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Parents are encouraged to support school in a variety of ways:

Helping with homework and regular reading activities

Attending meetings in school or curriculum workshops

Attending assemblies, productions and special events

Helping in classrooms or on visits (subject to DBS clearance)

Completing relevant forms and paperwork

Adhering to Home School Agreement MULTI-CULTURAL STATEMENT We believe that Hamstead Infant School promotes a caring community within this school which enhances every child’s positive self-image, valuing their individual backgrounds, religions and languages. The school has a Racial Equality policy based on the LA model. CONTENT OF THE CURRICULUM Lessons are taught as a class, set or in small group sessions taking into account different children’s learning styles. Individual children may receive support on a 1 to 1 basis. Swimming is available for Yr1 and Yr2 children. The children are set in ability groups when appropriate and all work is matched to the ability of each group of children. Each class in a year group covers the same work to promote equal opportunities. Children with particular needs may require specific work being set for them. This is arranged through the class teacher, parent and other agencies as and when appropriate. Literacy, Numeracy and P.E. are taught as discrete subjects in school. However the school has adopted a creative topic based approach to incorporate these core subjects into other subject areas and the work is often delivered or presented as topics or themes. This type of approach helps children to use and apply skills, improve their presentation and above all enjoy the curriculum! Children are involved in choosing and planning ideas for topics each half term.

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is followed by Nursery and Reception children. FOREST SCHOOL Our school is an accredited Forest School and has a forest area on site that is shared with Hamstead Junior School. This area is mainly used by Year 1, 2 and Reception children, with all children having access to the forest area and outdoor classroom at other times when they will be able to enjoy many varied and exciting activities. ENGLISH In school children read in a group situation concentrating on skills, fluency and expression. The children are then encouraged to learn the common spelling patterns in KS.1 along with a knowledge of non words. Handwriting Children are taught the correct letter formation using a combination of schemes leading to a joined handwriting style compatible with the Junior School. MATHEMATICS The school enables each child, according to ability, to achieve a basic understanding of mathematics needed for everyday living in society. The syllabus includes using mathematical language in everyday situations; promoting the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; promoting awareness of shape, pattern and form in the environment and translating and understanding data. We also place great emphasis on mental strategies and problem solving. SCIENCE The school aims to direct each child's natural curiosity and enthusiasm towards an active interest and enjoyment of science, particularly within their own environment. It teaches each child, through practical experience to observe and record accurately.

PUPILS

Children are taught in similar age groups in classes of mixed ability following parallel programmes of study. Children in classes may be grouped differently for various activities within the timetable. All children are required to develop their skills to be independent learners. We occasionally have sets of twins in school and our policy is that each twin is placed in a different class to develop their own personality. We have found that often one twin dominates the other and we believe that each child should be able to develop their own identity. The safety and welfare of pupils in school is paramount. The school prides itself on developing sensible, well-behaved, caring pupils. Children enjoy school and work hard to achieve the best they can.

CHILD PROTECTION

The school has adopted the LA policy that sets out the policies and procedures for the protection of children from abuse. All staff who have contact with children have a legal duty to take the appropriate action as set down in the guidelines when faced with actual or suspected child abuse. You should be aware that if any staff has cause for concern about your child, there is a legal obligation to contact Social Services who will then carry out an investigation. School staff are not allowed to carry out their own investigation.

SCHOOL SECURITY

The Governors have taken action to ensure the children are safe while at school. Measures include Entrance lobby, key pads on main school doors, other doors are not accessible from the outside, closed gates at dinnertime, no access to the playground and a visual door monitor administered by the school secretaries. Teachers need to know who is collecting your child at home time and take great care that children are taken home by a known adult.
