Our Creed: To perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country. That their dedication, deeds and supreme sacrifice be a constant source of motivation toward greater accomplishments. Pledge loyalty and patriotism to the United States of America and its Constitution.

In addition to perpetuating the memory of departed shipmates, we shall provide a way for all Submariners to gather for the mutual benefit and enjoyment. Our common heritage as Submariners shall be strengthened by camaraderie. We support a strong U.S. Submarine Force.

The organization will engage in various projects and deeds that will bring about the perpetual remembrance of those shipmates who have given the supreme sacrifice. The organization will also endeavor to educate all third parties it comes in contact with about the services our submarine brothers performed and how their sacrifices made possible the freedom and lifestyle we enjoy today."

From the Base Commander

Shipmates:

I hope this

message find all

of you in good

health and spirits.

By the time you

get this edition of

the Currents we will have

completed a busy month of

events for May. I want to thank

all of you who planned,

conducted and participated in the

May events.

This will be my last input to the

Currents since I am stepping

down as your Base Commander

this month. My wife and I are

moving to Georgia to be close to

our kids and grandkids. It has

been my pleasure to be

intimately involved in the

workings of our base for the last

six years from Junior Vice to

Base Commander.

I was honored to serve you. I am a life member of

Hampton Roads Base so you may see me from time

to time even though I will be living near Atlanta

Georgia. The new slate of officers will be presented

to you as soon as possible and I know they will be

dedicated to keeping our Base one of, if not the best

base in USSVI.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

From the Senior Vice-Commander

As the season has changed to

Spring, we are seeing changes

among our own USSVI

leadership. I would like to

take this opportunity to thank

Jim for his time and devotion

to our Hampton Roads Base as Junior/Senior Vice

and Commander. As Jim and his wife move to

Georgia to be surrounded by their children and

grandchildren, we wish him and his family health and

happiness for years to come. I am eager to step-up in

the interim and take the reins, to listen and learn from

the elders, and also embrace this season of change.

With Gary as the interim Senior Vice and Adam

volunteering as the interim Junior Vice, I feel this

team will be strong and our successful efforts will

continue.

A favorite quote of mine is that, "I have learned

through life that everyone wants a perfect ending.

But over the years I have learned that some of the

best poems do not rhyme, and many great stories do

not have a clear beginning, middle, or end. Life is

about not knowing, embracing change, and taking a

moment and make the best of it without knowing

what’s going to happen next."

Fair winds and Following Seas Jim - enjoy and

embrace this new change in your life!

From the Secretary/

Treasurer

The end of May was very

busy, the Submarine Memorial

and Hall of Fame Boat

ceremonies at the SLF, the 50th

Anniversary Memorial Ceremonies for the USS

SCORPION, and the 134th Portsmouth Memorial

Day Parade. That was a lot in a short period of time.

I hope you were able to partake in some, if not all, of

these events. All three of these are important events

to us as veterans, as they allow us to honor those who

went before us, the first two in particular, since they

are submarine force related and are directly related to

the first part of the USSVI creed.

As for me, May was very important, I was cleared by

both my surgeon and Physical Therapy from all

restrictions that were imposed on me by the

replacement of both of my knees. I’ll have routine

checkups for a year before I’m fully cleared but I

expect to be riding my bicycle by the middle of this

month, hooray!

STS1(SS) Sam Stevens is still working on our new

Base website (https://www.hrb-ussvi.org/), making

modifications and improvements. In the Members

Qualification section, we’ve added a new section; it

identifies members who have come to our attention

that need to be visited or called because they have

become shut-ins or for some similar reason. If you

can, reach out to one of these members, please login

to our website and go to the link to this page by

HRB Currents, June 2018 Page 3

hovering over the Member Quals button. They’ll

really appreciate the interaction (they really need it).

There has been no change as of yet with the new

USSVI National website

(https://www.ussvi.org/home.asp). We have asked

for an update and explanation of what is going on

with the website from our District Commander and

Regional Director. They don’t have the answers but

we hope they will get them for us from our National

leadership.

That will be all from me for this month. As always, if

you need something don’t hesitate to email me or call

me so I can help you out. I’m only as far away as

your computer or the other end of your phone;

otherwise…

Boats Lost in June

’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’

USS O-9 (SS-70): Lost on Jun 20, 1941 with the loss

of 34 men when it foundered off Isle of Shoals, 15

miles from Portsmouth, NH.

USS S-27 (SS-132): Lost on June 19, 1942 when it

grounded off Amchitka Island. She was on the

surface in poor visibility, charging batteries and

drifted into the shoals. When she could not be freed

and started listing, the captain got the entire crew to

shore (400 yards away) in relays using a 3-man

rubber raft. The entire crew was subsequently

rescued.

USS R-12 (SS-89): Lost on June 12, 1943 with the

loss of 42 men near Key West,

FL during a practice torpedo

approach. The cause was

probably flooding through a

torpedo tube. The CO and 2

other men on the bridge

survived, as did 18 crew

members on liberty at the time

of the accident.

USS Runner (SS-275): Lost between June 26 and

July 4th, 1943, with the loss of

78 men.

Runner was on her 3rd war

patrol probably due to a mine.

Prior to her loss, she reported

sinking a freighter and a

passenger-cargoman off the

Kuriles. This boat's last known ship sink happened on

June 26th, so she probably hit that mine on or after

that date but before July 4th, when she was scheduled

back at Midway.

USS Herring (SS-233): Lost on June 1, 1944 with

the loss of 83 men near

Matsuwa Island. Herring was

on her 8th war patrol and was

conducting a surface attack

when a shore battery spotted

her and made 2 direct hits on

her conning tower and

causing her loss. Before being

sunk, she had sunk a freighter and a passenger-

cargoman. Herring was the only US submarine sunk

by a land battery.

HRB Currents, June 2018 Page 4

USS Golet (SS-361): Lost on June 14, 1944 with the

loss of 82 men. On her 2nd

war patrol, Golet was

apparently lost in battle with

antisubmarine forces north of

Honshu.

USS Bonefish (SS-223): Lost on June 19, 1945 with

the loss of 85 men when sunk near Suzu Misaki.

Winner of 3 Navy Unit

Citations, Bonefish was

on her 8th war patrol.

After sinking a

passenger-cargoman,

Bonefish was subjected to

a savage depth charge

attack.

June Historic Events

June 5, 1794 - The first officers of the U.S. Navy

under the new United States Constitution are

appointed: John Barry, Samuel Nicholson, Silas

Talbot, Joshua Barney, Richard Dale, and Thomas

Truxtun. They are also asked to supervise the

construction of new ships.

June 8.1830 - The sloop of war USS Vincennes

becomes the first US Navy warship to circle the

globe when she returns to New York. She departs

on Sept. 3, 1826, rounds Cape Horn and cruises the

Pacific protecting American merchantmen and

whalers until June 1829.

June 6, 1918 - After Allied troops take Hill 142 at

Chateau-Thierry, France, during World War I, 12

enemy soldiers crawl in a position to counter attack

with five light machine guns. Realizing his

company might withdraw if fired upon, Marine

Gunnery Sgt. Maj. Ernest A. Janson, quickly rushes

and bayonets two enemy leaders, forcing the rest of

the enemy attackers to withdraw. For his

"conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" on this

occasion, he is awarded the Medal of Honor by

both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army.

May 23, 1939 - USS Sailfish / Squalus (SS 192),

bottomed at 243 ft. after a valve failure caused

flooding, was located by her sister ship, USS

Sculpin (SS 191) and established communications.

Using the McCann Rescue Chamber, divers from a

submarine rescue ship were able to save the

remaining 33 Sailors from Sailfish/Squalus. Four

enlisted divers were awarded the Medal of Honor

for their efforts in the rescue and salvage.

June 9, 1944 - During her Fifth War Patrol, USS

Harder (SS 257) sinks Japanese destroyer Tanikaze

in the Sibitu Passage, about 90 miles southwest of

Basilan Island. On June 6, she sinks the Japanese

destroyer Minazuki 120 miles east-northeast of

Tarakan, Borneo. On June 7, Harder sinks the

Japanese destroyer Hayanami south of the Japanese

fleet anchorage at Tawi, southeast of the Sibitu

Passage, Borneo. On the morning of Aug. 24,

Harder is sunk in Dasol Bay, Philippines, by enemy

depth charges on its Sixth War Patrol. There are no

survivors and the crew is never recovered. For his

"conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity " in sinking

the Japanese destroyers during the Fifth War Patrol,

Cmdr. Samuel D. Dealey, Harder’s CO, is

posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

June 6, 1957 - Two F8U Crusaders and 2 A3D

Skywarriors fly nonstop from USS Bon Homme

Richard (CVA 31) off the coast of California to

USS Saratoga (CVA 60) off the east coast of

Florida. This is the first carrier-to-carrier

transcontinental flight. The F8Us take 3 hours and

28 minutes and the A3Ds completed the crossing in

4 hours and 1 minute.

WWII Memorial and Hall of Fame

Ceremonies

The 2018 Submarine Memorial Service and Hall of

Fame Induction was held on 19 May at the Norfolk

Submarine Learning Center. About 25 Hampton

Roads Base members attended. Special recognitions

go to: Ken Swan for taking the lead in championing

Memphis; Dick Helm for his support of the WWII

memorial; and to former Memphis crew member

Kerry Logan, former Memphis COB Ron O’Donnell,

and Hampton Roads Base Cob Craig Dudley, for

their fine, but unsubmarinerly, marching in step in

the color guard.

Once more, the bell tolled for those on each of the

fifty-two lost boats, as a representative miniature was

retired. A fifty-third bell rang to honor those who

lost their lives on submarines where the boat herself

was not lost.

HRB Chaplain Brian Krammes led the prayer of

blessing the memorial wreath:

The wreath was then presented by Ed Kracker. The

memorial wreath then will be taken to sea by the USS

Boise on her next sailing.

Dear Lord,

thank you for letting us come together to

remember our fallen shipmates and friends

who are now on “Eternal Patrol”.

Please bless this wreath that will be cast

upon the waters, in memory of those

shipmates;

and watch over the good ship Boise and the

Submariners that carry it to sea.

We also ask that you bless our actions of

dedication. Look over those of us still on

those Earth who need Your guidance for

ourselves, our service and our country.

Please, Lord, heal those who are hurting

and comfort us as we mourn.

We ask this in Your Name,

Amen

Regarding the Hall of Fame, the following 24 May

USWN article, written by SUBLANT public Affairs

Staff, pretty well covers it,

USS Memphis Inducted into Submarine

Hall of Fame SUBLANT Public Affairs, DVIDS, May 22

NORFOLK, VA. - Vice Admiral William Merz,

Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Warfare

Systems, was the guest speaker at the ceremony.

Merz, who commanded Memphis from 2003 to

2006, described his crew as ordinary guys who did

extraordinary things.

“My crew (USS Memphis) was an amazing

bunch of ordinary submariners. I know a lot of

people say that humbly, but I have documentation

to prove it,” said Merz. “Working together that

ordinary group quickly turned into extraordinary.

We wanted to be the boat that you picked to do the

hard missions. The boat that when you knew it had

to get done, that Memphis would get it done.”

During the ceremony Master Chief Radioman

(Ret.) Ron O’Donnell, former Memphis

crewmember, and Merz presented Cmdr. Leightom

Pitre, commanding officer, and Master Chief

Machinist Mate Cindy Huratiak, command master

chief, of Submarine Learning Facility with

Memphis’ shadow box.

“On behalf of all the officers and crew who

served aboard USS Memphis, from 1977 to 2011, I

would like to present this shadow box,” said

O’Donnell.

Each hall of fame inductee’s shadow box is

displayed in the Alcorn Auditorium, located inside

Submarine Learning Facility, with a history plaque

below it. The Alcorn Auditorium is used by today's

submarine crews and offers a visual display of

their heritage.

“The submarines are the forefront. They are

the ones that knock down the door and every day I

am in the Pentagon I learn more and more the

importance of this community,” said Merz. “This is

a tremendous honor that you have bestowed on me,

my ship and everyone who has served on USS

Memphis.”

Memphis became the 20th submarine inducted

into the Submarine Hall of Fame. Memphis, a Los

Angeles-class submarine, was commissioned Dec.

17, 1977, re-designated an experimental submarine

during 1989 to test composite hull structures,

unmanned underwater vehicles, advanced sonars,

hull friction reduction, and other advanced

technologies for the Los Angeles and Seawolf

classes. Memphis was decommissioned Apr. 1,

2011.

USS SCORPION MEMORIAL

About twenty-five HRB members and guests were

among the several hundred at the 26 May ceremonies

marking the 50th year since the Scorpion was lost.

Shipmate John Donaldson has been involved with the

Scorpion family for several years. He has provided

much assistance to the memorial events that are also

supported by the local Knights of Columbus.

John sent the following article; the pictures are from

SUBLANT PAO.

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

Norfolk, VA 26 May 2016 - The Hampton Roads

Base United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.,

supported the 50th Memorial honoring the 99

Shipmates of USS Scorpion at a ceremony held on

Naval Station Norfolk at the location where families

waited on a cold rainy day 50 years ago in eager

anticipation of the return of their loved ones. This

year, the weather was a lot nicer than almost all of

the previous 5-year memorials.

The ceremony was planned and executed by

Scorpion family members and friends under the

direction of Ms. MaryEtta Nolan, daughter of Chief

of the Boat TMC(SS) Walter Bishop, and her

husband Art Nolan.

Over 350 family members and former Scorpion

shipmates were in attendance along with another 200

local Sailors, civilians and USSVI members.

In a rather unorthodox manner, Submarine Force

Commander Vice Admiral Joseph E. Tofalo

introduced Captain (ret) William E. Richardson, who

earned his submarine warfare insignia (dolphins) on

USS Scorpion, who then introduced his son, Chief of

HRB Currents, June 2018 Page 11

Naval Operations, Admiral John M. Richardson. In

his introduction of his son, Captain Richardson

remarked that he passed along his sword and Ensign

shoulder boards to him when he was commissioned

and his shoulder boards for each subsequent

promotion up to the rank of Captain, after which he

told his son that he was on his own from then on! He

carried on the Navy tradition in excellent form,

culminating in his selection as the 31st Chief of

Naval Operations!

The ceremony included the surviving spouses who

presented a wreath to be taken to sea on a future

submarine deployment, reading of the names of the

99 Shipmates, tolling of a bell in their honor, a rifle

salute, taps and the Navy Hymn.

Attendees were then offered tours of the USS Boise

(SSN 764) and the Submarine Learning Facility.

A special thanks to the USSVI members who

volunteered to assist with the planning and execution

of this memorable event:

With the conclusion of the 50th Memorial, the

responsibility for conducting future Scorpion

memorials has been assumed by the Hampton Roads

USSVI Base. Memorials on off years will be

coordinated with the Knights of Columbus and held

at War Memorial Park in Newport News. Five-year

memorials will be held at Naval Station Norfolk with

sponsorship coordinated with Naval Station and

Submarine Force Public Affairs offices.

Happy Birthday to Guy Putman

This article is being written as our shipmate and

associate member Guy Putman joins the over 53,000

American centenarians.

He was born in Baltimore (You can figure the date.)

Guy enlisted in 1935 and became a Yeoman. In 1941

he was commissioned and later directed cargo

handling and disbursements on various assignments.

After advancing to LtCDR, Guy retired from the

Navy in 1953. His civilian career was in the banking

industry. Post retirement, fishing became one of his

prime interests.

In addition to being very involved in Scouting, he

found time to become an associate member of the

HRB Currents, June 2018 Page 14

Submarine Veterans of WWII and later as an

associate member of USSVI-Hampton Roads Base.

It is well known that he is an accomplished ballroom

USS Scorpion Family Members Remember

99 Submariners Lost 50th Anniversary Ceremony Held at Memorial

Site

Staff, SUBLANT Public Affairs, May 29

NORFOLK, VA — Family members, friends, and

submariners past and present gathered at the

Scorpion Memorial on Norfolk Naval Station May

26, to honor the memory of the 99 Sailors lost aboard

the attack submarine USS Scorpion (SSN 589).

The ceremony marked the 50th anniversary of

Scorpion's loss on May 22, 1968. A crowd of over

500 gathered to remember the 99 Sailors on eternal

patrol, to honor the families left behind, and to

strengthen the friendships developed over the years.

Following the invocation by Capt. Melvin

Underwood, the Submarine Force chaplain, Vice

Adm. Joseph E. Tofalo, commander, Submarine

Forces, gave opening remarks welcoming all in

attendance on behalf of the United States Submarine

Force.

"I can think of nothing more appropriate on this

beautiful Memorial Day weekend morning than to

formally pause for a moment to reflect on these great

Americans who gave their lives in the service of this

country," Tofalo said.

Tofalo thanked all who planned the event,

welcomed the families, and introduced retired

Captain Bill Richardson, a former Scorpion crew

member. Richardson had the honor of introducing his

son and the guest speaker of the ceremony Chief of

Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson.

Adm. Richardson, too, reflected on the

importance of this ceremony in Submarine Force

history. "If you are a submariner, if you are part of

HRB Currents, June 2018 Page 15

the submarine family, if you are a former submariner,

or interested in the submarine force or the Navy, you

could not ask to be in a better place than here on this

pier in Norfolk, right now to celebrate this

memorial."

Richardson's words to the families were of

compassion and reflection. He reminded them that

the Navy will continue to remember. "We use the

word family a lot when we talk about our service in

the Submarine Force. You see through this crowd

that this is a multi-generational family," said

Richardson. "We reach out today and every day to

strengthen one another."

To veterans, he shared his appreciation for their

continued patriotism and desire to preserve the

history and heritage of the force. To submariners

serving today, Richardson said, "We will not pass up

any opportunity to get better professionally and to

make our force more lethal and more deadly for our

enemies and more safe for our Sailors."

After recognizing the families, Capt. Maryetta

Nolan, daughter of Chief Torpedoman Walter

William Bishop, the Chief of the Boat on Scorpion at

the time of her loss, introduced the Sailors who

would be reading of the 99 names and tolling the

bell. Machinist Mate Chief Patrick Smith, the

grandson of LT David Lloyd, Scorpion's executive

officer, and Lt. Charles Koller, grandnephew of

Bishop, read the names of each submariner as

Yeoman Second Class Rachael Skelton,

granddaughter of Storekeeper Second Class Julies

Jackson, tolled the bell.

After the reading of five names, the bell was

struck twice. Once for the lost Sailor and once for the

family left behind.

As the last name was read and the final bell

struck, a 21-gun salute was rendered, followed by the

playing of taps by the U.S. Fleet Force Band.

At the close of the ceremony, a wreath dedicated

to the Scorpion crew was presented by the Scorpion

Widows to Tofalo, who received the wreath on

behalf of the Submarine Force. The wreath will be

ceremoniously committed to the deep by the next

deploying Norfolk-based submarine.

50 Years Ago, Navy Sub USS Scorpion

Sank with 99 Crewmen Courtney Mabeus, Virginia-Pilot, May 28

NORFOLK, VA — For years, Russ Fennick was

wracked with guilt when people would apologize to

him for the loss of a father he never knew.

Fennick was just 3 months old when Navy Seaman

William R. Fennick left Norfolk on a routine

deployment to the Mediterranean. He has seen his

father only in photos since.

The elder Fennick was a fire control technician on

board the Skipjack-class nuclear submarine USS

Scorpion (SSN 589). Russ Fennick was 6 months old

on May 27, 1968, when his mother, Eileen Bentle, held

him on a pier at Naval Station Norfolk and waited,

along with a couple of dozen other families, in driving

rain for their sailor to return. Hours passed. Families

were sent home.

News broke on television that night: The Scorpion

was missing.

No one truly knows what happened, but the families

of the crew are acutely aware of the outcome: 99

members of the Navy's silent service never returned. A

massive search along the sub's projected course in the

eastern Atlantic ensued. On Oct. 31, 1968, Chief of

Naval Operations Adm. Thomas Moorer announced

that the Scorpion had been found more than 400 miles

southwest of the Azores in more than 10,000 feet of

water.

In a private memorial Saturday at Naval Station

Norfolk, families marked the anniversary of the

submarine's disappearance. Chief of Naval Operations

Adm. John Richardson served as the keynote speaker.

His father, Capt. William Richardson, who served in

the Scorpion from 1962 through 1965, also attended.

This much is certain: The Scorpion was heard from

on May 21, 1968, when Cmdr. Frances Slattery, the

HRB Currents, June 2018 Page 16

sub's skipper, sent a message indicating the boat's

position south of the Azores and giving an anticipated

return time of around 1 p.m. six days later. The

Scorpion had been sent on a classified mission around

the same time, according to news reports.

A seven-panel naval board of inquiry was convened

to investigate. It pored over thousands of photos

looking for clues, but could not come up with a

definitive answer.

"The certain cause of the loss of the Scorpion

cannot be ascertained," the court's final report read,

according to a Feb. 1, 1969, story in The Virginian-

Pilot.

Documents declassified in 1984 after a request by

The Pilot and the now-defunct Ledger-Star suggested

that an accidental torpedo explosion may have caused

the sub to sink, crushing its hull.

"The disappearance of USS Scorpion is one of the

greatest non-wartime tragedies in our Navy's history,"

Navy spokeswoman Lt. Lauren Chatmas said in a

statement earlier this week. "We remain deeply

saddened by the loss of the 99 sailors, and we honor

their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their families. We

remember and pay tribute to their courage, their service

to our country and their commitment to duty."

The lack of an absolute reason for Scorpion's

sinking gave way to theorists who have suggested a

variety of explanations, including that it was sunk by

Russians in retaliation for the loss of one of its subs in

the Pacific. Others have alleged Navy cover-ups.

MaryEtta Nolan has been organizing the Scorpion

memorials for decades. Her father, Chief Petty Officer

Wally Bishop, was the chief of the boat on the sub. She

has heard the stories and dismisses them.

"Nothing's going to change the circumstances," said

Nolan, a captain in the Navy reserves' nurse corps.

For her, the memorials are a chance to learn about

the sailors who served with her father, who is forever

etched in her memory as a hero.

"I love to hear the stories," she said.

Eagle Scout presentation for Shane Robert Catherman on Saturday, 05-MAY – Jim Reynolds: o The Eagle Scout Ceremony on the 5th went well. The Scout Council does a good job in elevating a

scout to the rank of Eagle. o Ted, Sam and I were one of two organizations sending presenters. Since this was my first Eagle

Scout presentation I was a little cautious about taking up too much time in reading the accompanying letter and Vice Admiral Fluckey Biography. When I do another one I will certainly read the letter and Highlight Admiral Fluckey's WWII exploits and Eagle Scout history.

o Both the Council President and the Eagle Scout's father are submariners so Ted and I encouraged them to join.

The motion was passed by voice vote.

Most Active Member Program Proposal – Sam Stevens o There aren’t a lot of personal awards available from National, Region, or the District. o I’m proposing to develop a Base program to publically recognize and award those Base members

who deserve recognition because of attendance and contributions to the Base. o There was dissention from some of the membership because a lot of members do what they do

just to do it and don’t feel public recognition is necessary or even appropriate. o The Base Commander has given Sam the go-ahead to do more development work to have a
