Description of HogwartsThe narrow path had opened suddenly on to the edge of a great black lake. Perched atop a high mountain on the other side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers.

The fleet of little boats moved off all at once, gliding across the lake, which was as smooth as glass. Everyone was silent, staring up at the great castle overhead. It towered over them as they sailed nearer and nearer to the cliff on which it stood.

Professor McGonagall pulled the door wide. The Entrance Hall was so big you could have fitted the whole of the Dursley’s house in it. The stone walls were lit with flaming torches like the ones at Gringotts, the ceiling was too high to make out, and a magnificent marble staircase facing them led to the upper floors.

Harry had never even imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles, which were floating in mid-air over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting. Professor McGonagall led the first-years up here, so that they came to a halt in a line facing the other students, with the teachers behind them. The hundreds of face staring at them looked like pale lanterns in the flickering candlelight while dotted here and there among the students, the ghosts shone misty silver. Mainly to avoid all the staring eyes, Harry looked upwards and saw a velvety black ceiling dotted with stars. He heard Hermione whisper, ‘It’s bewitched to look like the sky outside, I read about it in Hogwarts: A History.’It was hard to believe that there was a ceiling there at all, and that the Great Hall didn’t simply open on to the heavens.

Hogwarts School Inspection

Type of School Wizarding

Age Range of Pupils 11-18

Headmaster Albus Dumbledore

Description of the School

Hogwarts is a larger than average Wizarding institution that caters for Wizards and Witches from all backgrounds, including muggle-borns. Most of the staff are effective teachers, although there are exceptions. However, Professor Lupin, Professor Moody and Professor Quirrell were all dangerous appointments to the teaching staff as they put the students at considerable risk.

Overall effectiveness of the school

Hogwarts is a good school because most students finish Hogwarts and get good jobs, such as working in the Ministry of Magic. Many graduates are a credit to their school but there are a few old students who are evil wizards such as He Who Should Not Be Named and Lucius Malfoy.

Health and Safety

The students often leave wands unattended and will even do magic while not being supervised by an adult. The bludgers used in Quidditch are extremely hard so that injuries are common. They should be covered in cotton wool so that they follow Health and Safety regulations. Professor Snape’s potions classroom is down a flight of very steep steps so it is easy for a student to fall. These should be replaced. The occurrence of several beasts in the school, including a troll, a three-headed dog, dragons, cromantula (giant tarantula) and werewolves present a considerable risk to the students’ safety.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the teaching and organisation of this school is generally good. However, the lack of compliance to Health and Safety regulations is letting the school down. If this isn’t improved, Hogwarts could be at risk of being shut down.

Inspection Report for Beauxbatons

Age Range of Pupils: 11- 18 years old

Headteacher: Madame Maxime

Type of school: Academy of Magic

Teaching:

Teaching at Beauxbatons is generally good. The pupils are taught predominantly in French, however the teachers are also fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and Flemish.

They have a very dedicated Triwizard team who have opportunities to practise most evenings. Unfortunately they were not the most successful in the latest tournament, with their contestant finishing 4th out of 4 contestants.

Art and dance are strongly celebrated in the school and the students perform very well in these areas. Pupils are well known for their poise and elegance.

The students have great respect for their teachers and all stand to attention whenever their headmistress enters the room to show their esteem.

Accommodation and Environment:

The school is located in a beautiful château surrounded by gardens and fountains. It is deep in the Pyrenees in the mountains of Southern France. The dining chamber is full of non-melting ice sculptures and the students are serenaded by wood nymphs while they eat. The food is varied, healthy, tastes very good and is extremely popular.

Care and Safety of Students:

The Beauxbaton school looks after its students very well. Madame Maxine thinks of the students as her own children and so they are kept safe and are encouraged to know right from wrong as soon as they enter the school. The school grounds are safe and beautifully kept.

Overall Effectiveness:

Beauxbatons school gives its students a very good start on their journey of magical life. They turn out polite, beautiful, clever and brave students who generally go on to do very well in the magical world. Students are lucky to have the privilege of residence in such a stunning setting and of being taught by such inspiring teachers.

Inspection Report for Durmstrang

Age Range of Pupils: 11- 18 years old

Headteacher: Igor Karkaroff

Type of school: Wizarding

Teaching:

The teaching at Durmstang Institute is generally of a good standard. However some of the subject matter is unacceptable. Although teaching of the Dark Arts was not witnessed on this inspection, the pupils talked freely about their Dark Arts lessons.

Students are not the most welcoming and some have a rather prejudiced view of other schools and also, we noticed, of Muggles and Muggle culture in particular.

Accommodation and Environment:

Durmstrang is located in the far North of Europe and any visitors including the students themselves are not permitted to know the exact location.

The grounds of the school are superb with lovely views. The huge lake behind the school is a popular swimming and diving spot for the students throughout summertime.

The stone castle, in which the main school is based, is four stories tall and fires are only lit for magical purposes and so it is a very cold school. The rooms are small and icy but adequately resourced for learning.

Care and Safety of Students:

The students are looked after well and are taught to be self-sufficient although some might say they are encouraged to be arrogant. The students on the whole take care of themselves; it is more the safely of other students from other schools that is of concern.

Overall Effectiveness:

Durmstrang is a formidable school that teaches its students well and exhibits a strong school ethos. It is however a school that needs to be monitored closely as certain types of teaching including the teaching of the Dark Arts, and attitudes within the school, are of deep concern to the inspectors.

Extracts from Harry Potter about Hogwarts

The Entrance Hall was so big you could have fitted the whole of the Dursley’s house in it.

Harry had never imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles which were floating in mid-air over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting.

The walls were covered with portraits of old headmasters and mistresses all of whom were snoozing gently in their frames.

There were a hundred and forty-two staircases at Hogwarts: wide sweeping ones; narrow, rickety ones; some that led somewhere different on a Friday; some with vanishing steps halfway up that you had to remember to jump. There were doors that wouldn’t open unless you asked politely, or tickled them in exactly the right place and doors that weren’t doors at all but solid walls just pretending.

The Griffindor common room was a cosy round room, full of squashy armchairs. There were two doors, each leading to spiral staircases going up to the boys dormitories and the girls dormitories. At the top of the spiral staircase was the first years dormitory. Five four-posters hung with deep-red velvet curtains.

The Hufflepuff dormitory was a very cosy and welcoming place, as dissimilar as possible from Snape’s dungeon. There were lots of yellow hangings and fat armchairs and little underground tunnels leading to the dormitories, all of which have perfectly round doors, like barrel tops.

Rain was still lashing at the windows, which were now inky black, but inside all looked bright and cheerful. The firelight glowed over the countless squashy armchairs where people sat reading, talking or doing homework.

Extracts from Harry Potter about the Teachers

A tall, black-haired witch in emerald-green robes stood there. She had a very stern face and Harry’s first thought was that this was not someone to cross.

Snape started the class by taking the register…Snape finished calling the names and looked up at the class. His eyes were black like Hagrid’s, but they had none of Hagrid’s warmth. They were cold and empty and made you think of dark tunnels.

Like Professor McGonagall, Snape had the gift of keeping a class silent without effort.

“idiot boy!’ snarled Snape, clearing the spilled potion away with one wave of his wand. ‘I suppose you added the porcupine quills before taking the cauldron off the fire?’

‘We teachers are rather good at magic, Potter. We’ve even been known to turn out a worthwhile witch or wizard on occasion. I think it’s time I ask a few of them to take their magic beyond the classroom.’ Professor McGonagall.

‘ The Yule Ball is of course a chance for us all to – er – let our hair down. But that does NOT mean that we will be relaxing the standards of behaviour we expect from Hogwarts students. I will be most seriously displeased if a Griffindor student embarrasses the school in any way.’ Professor McGonagall.

Albus Dumbledore was never proud or vain; he could find something to value in anyone. That he was the most inspiring and best loved of all Hogwarts headmasters cannot be in question.

Dumbledore: "I had proven, as a very young man, that power was my weakness and temptation. I was safer at Hogwarts. I think I was a good teacher."Harry Potter: "You were the best."

‘Nothing to worry about,’ said Professor Lupin calmly, as a few people jumped backwards in alarm. ‘There’s a Boggart in there.’Most people seemed to feel that this was something to worry about. Neville gave Professor Lupin a look of pure terror, and Seamus Finnigan eyed the now rattling doorknob apprehensively.

In no time at all, Defence Against the Dark Art had become most people’s favourite class. Only Draco Malfoy and his gang of Slytherins had anything bad to say about Professor Lupin.
