Notes:Chn may try to warm the ice by wrapping it in fabric – does this work? (No)What do we do to melt ice on the roads? (Scatter salt) So, what will happen if we sprinkle salt on the ice? What happens if we pour water on the ice? (Water is warmer than ice – it will warm up the ice and make it melt faster)

Instructions:Freeze the treasure in pots overnight or for 4-6 hours in a freezer.Introduce the problem: Jack Frost has frozen our toys in ice! How can we save them?Chn investigate different ways of speeding up the melting process – they already know that the ice will eventually melt in the classroom.

Resources:Clean pots (yoghurt size)Small toys or treasure to freezeFood colouring (optional)SaltJugsEmpty water tray to contain the activity

Dark Tent Ideas

Blackout tents or dark dens can be purchased from educational suppliers or make your own by draping fabric (blackout sheeting is best) over one or two classroom tables so that the ends of the fabric touch the floor on at least three sides.

Fill the den with objects which produce or reflect light.

Produce Light Reflect LightTorchesLight up toysGlow SticksCamping lampsFairy lightsGlow-in-the-dark star decorations

Bike reflectorsHi Vis tape/jacketsReflective tapeClothes with reflective strips (often book bags and coats)Mirrors and other shiny objects

For a very exciting resource – write ‘secret’ messages using a UV lit pen onto card which chn can read using the attached light (these can be bought online and are called ‘spy pens’ ‘secret message pens’ or ‘invisible ink pens’).

Chn can then write their own secret messages in the pens and test them in the dark tent.
