The Hamills story for the past 5 years has been all about growth, in 2006 there were 5 Hamills stores and things were going along nicely, the success of these stores did not go unnoticed and as a consequence every 6 months or so another opportunity would raise its head and as a result a new Hamills store would open. This rapid growth required some structure and in 2010 Hamills Head office was formed. I was the lucky person and immediately I saw a business that had something special, a few rough edges to be sure, but the store owners had real a real passion for fishing and hunting so I knew I was in the right place. Every business has goals and when we sat down to discuss these goals we all agreed that giving a high level of customer satisfaction was top of the list.

We already knew our group buying power would allow us to get the price right but we knew we had to build on what had made us successful in the first place; “Trust”. When Bill Hamill opened his store in Rotorua in 1955 he quickly built a reputation as an honest bloke who knew what he was talking about, we think it’s this trust and knowledge that has made many of our stores great places to shop and we want to build on this.We know your dollars are hard earned and when you come into our stores you need to be sure that the advice you get and the products you buy are right. We think it’s best to tell it how it is; the latest products can be great but sometimes what’s already out there is also great; the Hamills promise is that we will tell it to you straight; then you can decide what suits best.So that’s what we are all about but don’t forget to have a look at the products and deals we have to offer and when you get 5 minutes have a look at our new website www.hamillsonline.co.nz Our goal with Hamills Online is to be able to let you know what’s happening, tell you about the latest gear and try and tempt you with our specials and deals. Finally we want your feedback; good or bad we need to know what you like, what you want, what you don’t like and what you think we can do better. Please call us on 04 5284840.

Opening Hours: 8.30-5.30 Monday to Friday 9-2 Saturday. Sunday Closed

Stacy Whiteman - Store OwnerI have a love for all things fishing and hunting but have a particular soft spot for softbaiting for snapper, gamefishing for marlin and chasing sika deer. Also

have a fascination for African big game hunting and intend to travel there to hunt one day.

Marcus Tweddell - Store AssistantThe highlight of my forty years of hunting was my first trip into South Westland chasing Tahr and Chamois. But I have had an awesome time hunting from the Kaimais to the Tararuas. Add to this the great fishing and diving opportunities over the years and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to share the knowledge I have gained with budding young hunters and fisherman to aid them in their pursuits.

FishingIntroSoftbaiting has revolutionised the way a lot of fishermen target snapper over the past few years. Everybody has heard of it, most anglers have tried it and quite a few do it exclusively and have turned their backs on traditional cut baits.

SpeciesThe primary target for most fishermen using softbaits is snapper, but they work well on most species that prey on smaller fish about the size of the softbait you are using. John Dory are another common catch, as they rarely take a cut bait and prefer live baits which is what we are trying to mimic. We have had a lot of success on Gurnard, Kahawai, Blue Cod and Kingfish as well.Skipjack and Albacore tuna are great sport, and some of the best fun I’ve had on softbaits.

TackleThe type of tackle used will come down to personal preference, but there are some basic requirements. The rod and reel outfit needs to be light enough to cast, retrieve and jig with for as long as you intend to fish, so lighter is definitely better. It will also need to be rugged and powerful enough to handle the sort of fish you intend to catch. These two things might sound contradictory but with the technology available in rods, reels and lines today it is possible and at a reasonable price. The rod used will usually fall into the 4-10kg range whether it is a 4-6, 4-8 or 6-10kg. It will be constructed of high modulus graphite which is light and sensitive, but powerful. The lighter weight range rods are more suited to fishing shallower areas over the sand, where you will be using lighter jig heads. Heavier weight rods come into their own in deeper water with heavier weights or with wash fishing, where you may need some extra grunt to help pull a big snapper out quickly. The two most commonly types of reel used are either spin or low profile baitcaster/overhead and like the rods they each have their place. Most people find the spin type reels easier to cast, and for most situations they are all you need. Where the baitcasters and overheads come into their own is when fishing a bit deeper, as you have more control and feel than spin on the drop. With a spin

reel, fishing deep you have line coming off the reel with the bail arm open and it is harder to detect bites than with an overhead, where the spool is under your thumb allow-ing line out. It’s horses for courses a little bit, but the best thing to do is fish with whatever you are most comfortable. We have caught plenty of fish in deeper water with spin, and casting in shallow water with overheads.Braid is the preferred line, with fused braid being the preferred option for spin outfits. Braid has several advantages over monofilament for this type of fishing. Its low diameter means better casting distance and less resistance in the water, allowing lighter weights to be used. It also has more abrasion resistance than mono and very little stretch, so you will have much greater sensitivity.Add to the end of this a fluorocarbon leader of about 1.5-2m, a jighead and softbait of your choice, and you are fishing. There are a few good knot choices for the braid to leader and leader to jighead. I personally prefer the Albright and Leftys Loop.

TechniquesThe key thing with fishing softbaits is to treat them as what they truly are, which is a soft lure as opposed to a soft bait. They can and will catch fish when they are not moving, but are designed with tails as they are supposed to swim. The depth being fished will determine how we fish our lure - when fishing shallow over the sand, which is what we mostly do at home here, we set up a slow drift which is helped by use of a drogue or sea anchor unless there is no or next to no breeze. I will usually cast in the direction of the drift so that you are fishing areas the boat has not yet had a chance to spook. Once the lure has reached the bottom, assuming I haven’t al-ready hooked up , I will engage the reel and lift the lure off the bottom with a few light flicks to try and imitate a baitfish in distress, then lower the bait back to the bottom. This is quite a critical point where a lot of fishermen lose fish. When lowering the bait back to the bottom don’t just drop the rod and have loose line, you want to maintain just a hint of contact with the bait so you can feel any bites you may get at this stage. To do this just requires a slow retrieval on the reel just fast enough not to impede the

sinking but just have that hint of contact. Most of the hits I get are when I’m lowering the bait back down, which I think makes sense. You are imitating a distressed baitfish with the flicks, then the baitfish starts to fall back to the bottom, and the predator thinks “Sweet, easy meal” and moves in at this point. If you aren’t in contact when this hap-pens you may not catch the fish. I continue this flick-drop technique till the lure is beneath me. If I haven’t caught one on that cast, I then reel it in, cast and repeat. I find depth to be the most critical thing with this type of fishing. Unfortunately fish have tails so swim and move in all directions, so this can change from day to day. If you are struggling to find this depth using your sounder to spot schools of fish, then explora-tory drifting should find the correct depth. The best conditions are a nice light offshore breeze, where I would start shallow and drift out to try and determine the depth the fish are at.When fishing out deeper, things change a bit. I would cast forward but out to the side on about a 45 degree angle, and employ a similar method to the bottom-lift-drop technique, but let the lure run out behind the boat before winding back in. Otherwise I’d simply drop the softbait straight down behind the boat and once at the bottom lift with flicks and drop; or lift with flicks, wind slack up lightly, lift again a few times then drop back down, to cover a greater area of the water column.Fishing the wash can produce some of the biggest snapper. In this situation you are looking for areas where swell and surge are meeting a rocky headland or exposed reef then dropping back into the safety of deeper water. The oxygenated water is like a smor-gasboard for large hungry snapper where the surge in and out dislodges food like crabs and shellfish and also disorientates baitfish, allowing the predatory snapper to blindside them.Cast your bait into this oxygenated water

and retrieve it in a jerky manner with pauses allowing it to sink. Lighter jigheads will allow more hang time while sinking and minimise snagging on rocks and kelp. You will need to use a bit more power with drags and rods than you do over the sand but will have a much greater chance of catching that big moocher snapper in these conditions. Be prepared to lose some battles because the fish don’t have far to run and they are usually locals who know where to go when in trouble. If you are not catching fish, change things - not just the colour or shape of the lure but also the speed at which you are working it. I find that the fish are a lot more aggressive when the water is warmer and so a faster action on the lure works well, but when the temperature is down they seem to be more lethargic and quite delicate on the take, so a slower technique is more effective. Also, some lures lend themselves to different speeds - the Jerk Shad and Minnow baits need a bit of speed to give them some ac-tion, while the Crazy Legs and Jigging Grubs have more action and require less speed to make them work.

SummaryLike most things, softbaiting is a learning process, and the more you do the better you will get. Often success is not immediate for some fishermen, but success will come with a bit of perseverance and fine tuning of your technique. If you get the opportunity, fish with fishermen that are successful and pick up what you can. Take what works for you

out of what you see and hear, and use it to improve your catch rates.Once you start to achieve success with softbaiting you may end up like me, with a nice collection of traditional bait and straylining gear gathering dust.

NZ’s leadingfly sets

With the larger rivers and lakes running full after some heavy rain and snow causing them to discolour we thought we would try one of the drift fly rods and our choice suited the stream as it was tight with excellent pools. So out came the 7’11” – let’s give this baby a go. ‘Wow’ my mate an avid fisherman was impressed especially when I was laying out some great casts compared to his standard 9 footer – which was getting caught up in everything we didn’t want to catch. So we ended up sharing my rod and… Yes… we struck gold!! I’m talking a 3½ - 4lb gold in a pool that usually you would walk right past due to the tight bush either side.Once out into open country the fish were a lot more easily spooked and had been caught previously, so we headed back down the river to try our luck again. All in all we had a great day escaping the rat race and were pleased we chose the drift 7’11” as we would have come home like the French 0-1 to the fish! Here is a rundown on the drift range for those special spots where the standard just isn’t going to cut the mustard:“Tried and tested, the Airflo DRIFT series of fly rods brings specialist tools to the angler at a very agreeable price. Whether you require a small stream presentation wand or something with grunt to get down deep in the larger, southern lakes, there are a number of alternatives to back up your so called “all round 9’ 6wt”.”7’11” #4/5Designed to fish tight bushy creeks where pin point accuracy is essential and a delicate presentation is what it takes to take on selective feeders.

8’7” #5/6A perfect top of the water rod for fishing small dries and lightweight nymphs. The shorter length

makes this rod extremely accurate whilst its ultra-light tip aids in making short to mid-range casts with ease. This rod will make a perfect back country rod for ladies or younger anglers due to its reduced swing weight and smooth casting action.9’3” #5/6The faster more aggressive cousin of the 8’7 #5/6. This 9’3” model is designed to take on strong winds, heavy nymphs and bushy dry flies on back country rivers. Its longer length makes mending easy whilst aiding in the long casts often required on bigger rivers.9’9” #6/7This puppy is a specialist Stillwater tool, it’s longer length gives anglers better line control from a boat especially when “hanging” the flies and dealing with teams of flies. From the bank the extra length will send your back cast high over obstacles and drive out longer casts to improve your range. If that’s not enough this rod will double as a great big river nymphing tool.9’3” #7/8An all-round rod that despite its ability to handle heavy 8 weight lines is light enough in the hand to fish all day. A perfect rod for nymphing larger rivers or for firing out sinking lines to smelting fish at stream mouths. This is a powerful rod that still has great feel so will be a pleasure to fish.

I was once advised to “always have an opinion” even if you know very little on the subject. When asked to review the Bushnell Elite 3-9 x 40 Rifle-scope, I thought back to heavily detailed scope reviews that had quoted such terms as Chromatic aberration, Astigmatism, and Angular Dispersion which all challenge my ability to offer a truly qualified opinion.Whilst such reviews cater well for the reading visual learner, with an appetite for technical detail, I find more value and enjoyment in first hand observed and compara-tive opinions based on experience. In our Retail environment the array of choice is huge. Com-peting brands offering higher light transmission, greater field of view, larger eye relief and warranties which “Fair Go” couldn’t fault.Ignoring the array of cheaper Chinese made scopes which, whilst offer good value for money, also offer a higher incidence of leakage, parallax error, plus windage and elevation adjustments that can drive you crazy when sighting in.A customer’s preference will always take precedence over the Salesman’s opinion and it is unwise to try to convince them otherwise. However when invited to present the range of scopes available with prompts of “what do you prefer” and “which is the best” the challenge is there.Yes! I will always ask for the customer to buy the “Best” with a belief that the top German and Austrian brands are unrivalled in their features and performance. For me noth-ing beats optical clarity, definition and light gathering. You

are buying an optical instrument, which sole purpose, is to enable you to see the target clearly in often, poor light con-ditions. To state the obvious, I have never had a customer complain with the performance of these products. The Congratulatory statement when purchasing your new model Elite Riflescope states “The Brightest, Clearest, most durable line of Riflescopes available in the world at any price.” A bold claim! The 3-9x40 I was sent for testing is without a doubt, the most popular selling configuration of dimension and mag-nification for setting up on a Hunting rifle in NZ. Weighing 368g and with a length of 12.6in this is comparative with most others in its class. This scope was fitted with the common Duplex reticle, but is available in several alterna-tives suitable for the long range shooter, including the new Firefly illumination which offers a simple solution for low light shooting. The additional features that do separate it from others in its class are; the one piece tube, the use of superior Argon to Nitrogen gas for internal purging and sealing, full multiple coatings of all air to surface lenses, a light transmission claim of 95%, a very easy to use mag-nification dial, but most of all an outstanding external lens surface coating called Rainguard. This is a very efficient moisture wicking and light enhancing coating which offers immense practical advantages for the serious hunter.I mounted the Bushnell on my Remington 7mm08 Mountain Rifle to complete a lightweight hunting combination. At the range the ease with which the scope zeroed in and

tracked the target illustrated the precise adjustment of the Windage and Elevation turrets captive under their tidy low profile caps. With the approach of Spring, my young son Daniel and I ventured into Arthurs Pass looking for a young Deer drawn to the green grass. The ensuing stalk and eventual killing of a Deer was a good test of the Bushnell’s true light gathering performance. While observing the young Spiker clearly in the rapidly fading light through my similarly powered top end binoculars, it was no problem for Daniel to secure the Deer, and ensure a treasured Father and Son hunting experience. A second trip a fortnight later, and another Spring Spiker fell to the Bushnell’s accuracy. The Bushnell Elite sits alongside some well established and recognized brands within the NZ Market. Some of these brands have gained their reputation on their gener-ous replacement and repair warranties, while sacrificing their overall performance. The NZ importer and wholesaler of Bushnell have an outstanding reputation of supporting the extensive lifetime warranty on Bushnell Rifle scopes, excluding misuse. Generally the low incidence of warranty claim is resolved immediately without the long delay of sending the scope back to its place of manufacture. While I am not sure about Bushnell’s “best at any price claim”, I do agree the Japanese made Bushnell with its array of functional features and straight forward design can certainly claim “the best offering at $469.00 in the NZ market”

One of the most important pieces of my hunting equipment is a good quality knife. I have had the pleasure of using many different shapes and styles over the years and have identified a couple of features that I prefer in a knife.A fellow hunting guide Glen and I had a booking for a fishing and hunting weekend for a large group in November so this was a great opportunity to give these new knifes a work out. Knifekut are a well established NZ owned company, importing and distributing Knifes - especially to meat processing plants throughout New Zealand. I had three knifes to trial and I liked the look of one in particular due to its straighter blade as that’s an important feature in a knife for me. I immediately liked the new handle design as it felt good and comfortable in my hand – the edge was also good and didn’t require any sharpening. The blade is high carbon and stain resistant and is made of Japanese steel so keeping with the manufacture its first encounter was a Japanese deer (Sika) the knife was good and was comfortable to use – it also worked well when the handle was wet due to its anti slip texture It didn’t require a sharpen while sorting this deer out.The other two models I had were skinning style blades which are purpose built and have the same new style handle again were very sharp from new So all in all I was happy with its performance – It’s also pleasing to know that Knifekut offer a Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. So now I have a new knife in my kit that I will be using in the near future.

Just opened up in the heart of busy Washdyke a northern industrial suburb of Timaru is a new Hamills Store with a difference. While you browse the extensive range of fishing and hunting gear, you can also get a great barista coffee. The new store is spacious and well set out, stocking a comprehensive range of fishing hunting and outdoor equipment. Situated at 186 Hilton Highway, one of the busiest stretches of highway in the South Island and offering plenty of parking, the store is a convenient one-stop resource for all fishing and hunting products.Hamills Timaru is a destination store and encourages customers to browse and to share their experiences, but also offers excellent service including good advice and ideas and a bit of a chat about what’s happening in the area.

Richard Davidson is general manager and has been an avid fisherman in the area for the past 40 years.

His experience fishing local rivers is second to none in the community. He is joined by his sister Cheryl in running Hamills Timaru as a locally owned family store. Being part of the Hamills Group of specialist fishing and hunting stores and living in Southland

was a chance he wasn’t going to miss. Whilst living in Omarama for the last 10 years he was able to hunt Thar, Chamois, Red and Fallow deer as well as chasing Chukar, Quail and Ducks, so he has lots of sneaky places for Southerners heading north looking for that elusive High Country trophy.Gerald and the knowledgeable team of Hamills South-land are all about service and product at reasonable prices and ensuring enthusiasts get the right advice for the game they are after. The team look forward to get-ting amongst the great hunting and fishing opportunities that this last frontier offers, as well as mixing it up with the local outdoor enthusiasts.

We welcome you into the store to experience and become part of the story, that is, Hamills Southland, “Doing it better with Hamills”
