SANRAL was established in 1998, shortly after the transition to democracy.

We have played an important role during the first 20 years of freedom in

looking after a network which connects the country’s major cities, towns and

rural areas and facilitates the effective movement of people, goods and services.

This is after some residents discovered the tombstones of their loved ones have been destroyed by unknown thieves. They were horrified and saddened after the tombstones were destroyed and aluminium plates were stolen. Salphina Molondolosi, a

Sebushane MoobiWith a roll of 400 learners, Badumedi Secondary school had been allowed Math and Science teachers for the current year. The institution ran for some years without these inevitable human resources for more than a year. Mr N.A Moatlhodi, the principal, told the gathered parents that the school had acquired the services of Mr Monageng and Mrs Sesoko (temporary) to assist the learners in the said areas. Moatlhodi and the SGB members said that they were not impressed with the lowest of attendance of parents to the gathering.Moatlhodi further said results from the previous year had improved, and thanked the teachers, learners and parents for their efforts. He said that it was through determination, hardwork and understanding that all could be achieved. He stated that both the learners and teachers did not enjoy school holidays as they attended and that contributed to good results. He said that the presence and availability of the educators would help a lot and that results will tell.According to Moatlhodi, learners tend to be truant and naughty at times, but his institution does everything possible to curb the

behaviour. He said that learners tendency to take along cell-phones to school should not be allowed. He added that the latter disturbs their teaching and learning. He gave an example where a learner stole a teacher’phone and ultimately used vulgar words towards him/her. Moatlhodi added that the cellular phone also disrupts the attention and concentration of the child in class. He urged parents to teach learners to be respectful to the teachers as charity begins at home. Moatlhodi advised that not all the learners were disrespectful but there are a few rotten elements on the premises. He compared the institution with others that did not have learners on errands and did not have to close the gates. He stated they normally do not talk about punctuality as learners observe time. He pleaded with parents to purchase the correct uniform for the learners and that they should make sure that it is the right length. He explained some girl learners cut the actual length to the mini-skirt type that is not acceptable to the school.Moatlhodi requested parents and guardians to visit the school regularly in order to find out for them. He said that some parents rely on lies from children and remove the children from the

school and that it limits the school roll. He stated that teachers are looking at the future rather than the present. He said that numerous developments were to be made at the school and that parents had to be part of the undertaking. He hinted the kitchen and the store room as the first priority. He emphasized that the kitchen personnel at times work against the elements of nature and that it is both unhygienic and unsafe. He reiterated that the growth of the school depended on the support from the community. He voiced that the financial report was still to be compiled since the audit was not finalized. He explained that there were very few auditors and the number of schools had increased. He pleaded with parents to be patient until the next general meeting for the financial report. “Money is the root of all evil.” concluded Moatlhodi, and added that it should be borne in mind that small schools get small budgets.Mr Mfolo, a teacher, introduced the (QLTC) Quality for Learning and Teaching Campaign. He explained that the campaign ensured that teaching and learning become a joint effort. He relayed that the campaign is formed out of all the stake holders within the residence. Inter-alia, he mentioned churches, NGOs/NPOs, Business, SGB,

Policing forums etc. He emphasized that the QLTC encouraged that a child belongs to the community and that everyone should take initiative in the learning of the neighbouring children. Mfolo stated that the QLTC committee had to be formulated as soon as possible to start functioning.

In 2012, South Africa was named as the world’s capital of rape and it was said that women were more likely to be raped than to be educated, according to International Police( Interpol). It further said that on average a woman is raped every four minutes in our country. However our South African Police Services does not folds its arms to change this unbelievable and unacceptable practice.

Constable Yvonne Kubayi stationed at Temba Police Station is one of the officers who work hard to fight the social ills of domestic violence against women and children, that plague Hammanskraal and the surrounding areas. Kubayi who works under the Family Violence Children Protection and Sexual Offences and Sexual Unit (FCS Unit) have recently been honoured for her hard work. MATLA A BANA A Voice Against Child Abuse (MAB) a Non-Profit Organisation have awarded South African officers who have insured domestic violence perpetrators are convicted.MAB have honoured Kubayi after she arrested a suspect who raped a 71 year old granny of Varsfontein last year. She was offered a two night

stay at a hotel, given a certificate of recognition and a voucher. Kubayi told Hammanskraal News that the suspect Johannes Malebye 31, attacked the woman after he met her at the bus stop last year. Malebye later forced the victim into the nearby bushes threatening her with a knife and raped her. The suspect was arrested the same week after he commited this terrible offence, by Cst Kubayi, after the granny managed to identify the perpetrator. According to Kubayi the suspect was denied bail until his sentencing and cited the reason as her commitment to being a woman, and she deals with most victims who cannot defend themselves, of which some are still minors.Kubayi have been awarded the 2nd price recognition certificate for the best performer for the FCS unit in Gauteng province, which deals with domestic violence. She said that she managed to achieve this after the suspect was sentenced to two life sentences, after he was linked to the crime through a DNA TEST. I am happy the suspects have been found guilty and he is going serve two life sentences after which he will be released” said Kubayi. Talking about

the prizes she won, she said that she was very happy however, more needs to be done to tell the perpetrators that in this country, there is no room for rapists. She said that some of the challenges with doing her work are witnesses who have information but don’t come forward and assist the police with information which can insure perpetrators are sentenced and domestic violence survivors get justice. She also cited minor survivors who are unable to identify the perpetrators as some are

still young and some are scared, while some are told by family members not to continue with the case as sometimes the perpetrator(s) happens to be a relative. The granny who was raped by the perpetrator, when speaking to Hammanskraal News telephonically, said that she is relieved that her rapist have been sentenced to two life sentences, because she was always afraid to go into the street. She further thanked Kubayi for a job well done.

According to Justice Departments statistics on failed marriages or divorce hiked up by 28% from 39 573 to 50 517 in South Africa. This is said to be caused by cheating, domestic violence ,amongst others, this include high unemployment experienced by members of the society. This challenge cannot be solved by individuals but it needs collective society. Amongst those who made it their responsibility to come up with advice and solutions is Abey Party Khubodi, who is a teacher at Kudube

Primary school, and reside in Hammanskraal at Unit D location.Khubodi wrote a book titled Social Democratic Rights and Responsibilities of Men in South Africa which focuses on the rights, responsibilities and marriage problems in today’s democratic South Africa. Khubodi told Hammanskraal News that he wrote the book together with his younger brother Patrick Lechaba who is a professional priest in order to also include religious aspects in the book. “I was motivated by personal experience in the community and failed marriages” said

Khubodi. “I wanted to write a book which will give guidance and advise to men, because we see many incidences of domestic violence such as women and children being raped so I want to bring change by talking to men” emphasised Khubodi. He said that the reason is that democracy has brought changes in our society. Some men no longer know their responsibilities including their rights. Some men are abused by their partners or wives and they don’t know what to do or where to get help. He talks about the responsibilities of men as the head of the family and how to make relationships sustainable. According to Khubodi men don’t speak out when they are physically, emotionally, financially or sexually abused because they are afraid to open cases or seek advice. Traditionally men are expected to be stronger than women. “The book give advice on how men can get professional help, and if the problem need police, it guides them how to open a case or obtain protection order” he said. Most men think that protection orders can only be obtained by women, and that is not the truth, they need to know that if their spouses abuse them they can also obtain it. Men also need to know their rights in order to enable to protect themselves against any form of

abuse the same as women. Some women have even told him that the book has really changed their marriages. “Marriage is another topic which is addressed as most marriages don’t last, so this book serves as a tool which can save a marriage, as it can easily be used for advice and if one experiences problems, can easily refer or get advice” said Khubodi. He said some divorces are because men have marriage problems but they don’t talk or seek professional help, and he wonders if it is because they are shy or embarrassed. He believes there are reasons some men, after being stressed or depressed, resort to killing themselves and their spouses. He further advises young men to marry out of community of property so that if they go through divorce, they are able to take what they have worked for. Because divorces are not only happening to a particular race, belief, or a particular location though statistics may vary motivate Khubodi.

Coordinator of the North West Ifa la Bantwana (children’ treasure), Shirley Seboka explained that infants are very curious. She voiced that there are always challenges with infants involved in domestic accidents. She said that parents should take care of their infants and not let them out of their care as domestic accidents are rife. She said that homes need to be safe with the approach of winter. Seboka said that paraffin, medicines, insecticides etc. have to be placed in safe places. She added that infants and toddlers experiment with all the

dangerous materials. She stated that a lot

has to be done to avoid domestic accidents. She said that crawling toddlers may taste insecticides that were haphazardly sprayed around the rooms. She stressed that they at times drink anything that they come across and that that may be dangerous and harmful. She relayed that dogs and cats may bite the children. On the other hand, the worst of all the accidents is fire. She added that dangling rags and curtains may proof dangerous to the babies as they pull them down. She stated that upon pulling down table cloths, boiling water may spill onto the baby. She said that falling from beds may

render the children permanently brain damaged. The other issue may be that the child becomes weak from the sustained injuries. She said that impediments should be removed as the children may stumble. She emphasized that parents should not let the toddlers and children escape their eyes. She further said that parents must ascertain their children’s in’s and out’s because some may drown in basins of water that was left unattended after washing clothes. Seboka urged parents to take away furniture from the windows as children love climbing and that it may be dangerous. Children are not to be allowed in kitchens alone though most of the household chores are done in the kitchen. Kitchen utensils should have their handles towards the wall and the kitchens be kept under

lock and key. She said that many accidents occur in the kitchen. She went further to say that candles and other flammables should be put away. She further stated that in the case of someone catching fire; he/she must be covered with a blanket. She added that clothes worn by a burning person should not be removed. She stressed that a person should leave the burning house so as not to inhale smoke and immediately seek help. On the other hand children should never be allowed behind a car with a running engine. Seboka emphasized that burns must never be washed before a clinic is visited. She concluded that cold water could be used other than toothpaste before a burnt person could be taken for treatment at the clinic/doctor or hospital.

“TB IS NO LONGER A HIDDEN AGENDA,” VOYENTIN VILLAGERS WERE TOLD

By SebushaneMoobi

The residents of Voyentin village converged at Agrico hall to learn about the National TB day and its negative effects on human life. Among the attendants were the representatives from the North West Department of health and the different care giver groups in the area. Inter alia, the group mentioned the presence of TB in everyone who lives and that it awaits the time to be triggered. Sister Llale, entrusted with re-engineering, voiced that her section comprises 16 community workers. She emphasized that TB as a disease is no longer a hidden agenda and people should come out and be treated to heal. She explained that re-engineering had been there in the olden times when nurses pedalled bicycles to check patients at home. The latter was stopped and it had been brought back seeing that patients were kept locked up with the stigma. She stated that the public tends to close doors when the home based care workers approach their houses to attend to the sick. She humbly urged community members to open their doors so that their sick can be helped. “Help us so that we can help your next of kin. Do not shut us out”. She reiterated.Sister Llale emphasized the importance of home based care in collaboration with the Department of health as prevention of high mortality rate. She added that in some instances home based care givers unveil violence from drug abusers. She stated

that the communities can be timeously assisted in such cases in reprimanding the abuser. She urged community members to open windows daily to avoid contamination and allow fresh air into the room of the TB patient. She further urged the community to report the sick to the accessible outreach team members for sputum tests to be taken. She stated that TB treatment is free of charge. She relayed that it happens that a child younger than five years can also suffer from TB and that the care givers would make the necessary referrals. She mentioned that these care giver

groups help with minor ailments. She added that pregnant women also shut the care giver groups out in saying that they are mere unpaid workers. Llale stated with earnest that Tb

is a sleeping and silent killer. She encouraged that food gardens be erected in household and institutions alike. She insisted that prior knowledge of the disease symptoms can help to combat it. Llale voiced that the spit sputum is evidence of little knowledge or ignorance about this killer. She added that swallowing the sputum also aggravates the possibility of infection and TB transfer. She relayed that babies are more susceptible to TB infection as they have very low white blood cells. The attendants recommended that compulsory health education be introduced in schools and more community based health dialogues be held. It was concluded that churches be involved in the education and monitoring of the sick together with the department of health.Drug and substance abuse were condemned and that all violent actions be reported to the relevant department asap.

By KARABO MAHOMEHammanskraal legends where fighting for charity in Temba stadium in the field of play. It was top 8 that made all things possible and interesting It was a win, win situation for both all legends and company teams. Masters were represented by Temba masters came across Makapan masters while Mabitleng masters came across Moretele legends. Companies were represented by Rhino, Spar, Build it and Blue Ribbon. It was Mabitleng masters vs. Moretele legends that

opened the stadium with their first game. With Mabitleng not showing any respect to Moretele legends with the super striker solly opening the score with a sharp finish. They tried their level best to come back to this game but it was not their day with Dan rubbing salt to their wound. Tough tackling middle fielder Tovey of Moretele legends had a chance of scoring for Moretele legends, when he got a free kick just a few meters away from mabitleng masters poles but curled the ball over the cross bar. While the legends himself Tlhatlha missed one on one situation.

The second game didn’t start on a good mood as there were some quarrels of age to makapan masters whom had to face the troubling Temba masters. The game started with Makapan playing without key players which made it difficult for Temba masters to break their deadlock defence, which was so solid for the first 20 min. That didn’t stop the prolific Dingaan from releasing a superb run to budah who didn’t do any mistake but to put the ball behind the net. Makapan tried to respond through Aubrey who was well guided by Thabiso and Kwala. It was not a busy

day for number one goal keeper Majola of Temba masters, who did not even a super, save before budah completed what he started after receiving the ball from Kwala who was so over the field on the day.The legends had shown the young stars how to do it before Build It demolished Blue Ribbon while Spar got a free run to semi-final again it was Spar against Temba masters while build it went against Mabitleng Masters.
