    KIWIANA EVENT

Kiwiana, the event for international students, comprising all thingsKiwi, was an all round treat for those who attended. Residentswere able to sample an assortment of traditional New Zealandlollies (candy), along with cheeses, savouries, fish and chips,

battered mussels and fruits. Traditional pavlovas, ice-creams, andfairy bread were also served. Of course, all of this went down a biteasier with a can of L&P. Unfortunately due to the nationalMarmite shortage, this was absent this year.Throughout the day, traditional performances byManawatahi entertained the feeding attendees. Special thanksalso goes out to Manawatahi for serving the popular fried bread.

Competitions throughout the day gave residents a break from foodand made them use their brain instead of their puku(stomach). Three competitions involving guessing the number of

Minties, Chocolate Pineapple Lumps, Jaffas and the number ofeggs used to make a giant pavlova were conducted. ChristieNekinds of Kairanga correctly guessed the number of minties in the

jar, Sam Adliz of Totara won the Chocolate Pineapple Lumps Jarguessing competition, Nicola Kaatz of Totara won the Jaffas Jarand lastly, winning the 21-egg pavlova was Yuanwei Dai fromKairanga.

Another competition, involving the eating of a chocolate cow patwith no hands was won by Melissa Weaver of Kairanga. The daythen concluded with the very entertaining Gumboot throwing

competition. Marina Blandino from Atawhai and Marika Boseyacofrom Ruahine took out the titles for throwing thegumboot the furthest distance. All winners walked away with KiwiBooks or Taonga. All in all, it was a good Kiwi experience forinternational residents, allowing them to see what the common NewZealand culture is all about; the only downside being the excessivekgs put on by indulging in the delicious foods and treats :-)

It was a mentally and physically challenging Sunday for thosewho took part in our first time Amazing Chase on the 29th ofApril.

As teams started arriving, the excitement at the starting line was

stirring. They had no idea what lay ahead of them. After abriefing from our MC Bex T, they were thrown into their firstchallenge and it was nonstop action from there. With ninedifferent stations including sushi making, a memory test, netballshooting, make up, pizza roulette, computer puzzles, salsa andmore, there was something to cater for everyone.

The event was a great opportunity for team building and teamsparticularly liked the final event which asked them to join legs asyou would in a three legged race. It was hilarious seeing theways teams completed a lap around the track and Egmont wasespecially impressive when building their pace up to a run! Morecoordinated than most perhaps?

It was awesome to see people trying new things and pushingthemselves out of their comfort zones. Seeing two guys dancing

salsa and learning that Rebecca Black painted the Mona Lisawere particular highlights. Participants also had the opportunity toplay the game Pizza Roulette which is increasing in popularityand is run by Hells Pizza, a game not so pleasing for those whoget the incredibly spicy piece!

We would like to say a huge thank you to Hells Pizza PalmerstonNorth for their sponsorship. Remember to use your student cardand you can contact them for menu options. Maybe you couldeven play your own game of Pizza Roulette?

Thank you to all of the teams who participated in the AmazingChase 2012. We know at times it was tiring and challenging butyou all did so well. Amazing Race the television series anyone? The final placings in the race were as follows:

You may have noticed that a number of older buildings have disappeared from the grassedarea between Rehab road and Colombo Road. This is to make way for a new Village whichwill house staff who have been moved out of the Sir Geoffrey Peren Building and Refectory. Both these buildings are heritage buildings and are to be upgraded to their former glory andseismically strengthened to keep up with modern standards. Construction has now begun andit is intended that work will be completed (and staff moved into the village) before the yearends. Halls in the near vicinity have been informed of the work. Alternative study spaces areavailable.

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to raise them with the Accommodation Staff.

    STUDENT COUNSELLING SERVICE

    Scary Exam Time

You probably know the feeling you have so much to do that you spendall your time rushing there is no longer any time to visit friends, take abreak, even go to the gym, take a walk or go to church. You resent thosepeople who seem to go out drinking every night and still seem to crack thesemester tests. You spend every waking moment at your desk not daringto do anything else. You find it hard to concentrate; you are grumpy andsleep poorly. Your body feels gross and unfit and your mind seems to havestopped working. You are faintly aware that your chest is tight, yourshoulders sore, you have a dull headache and sometimes find it hard tocatch your breath.

Stress! We need it to do our best but it can also paralyse us and lead us todo less unhelpful and even downright harmful things such as drinking toomuch, wasting time, gambling, or spending money we cannot afford.Stress is triggered by a huge range of life events not just exams and itcan be the break up (or threatened break up) of a relationship, animpending sports fixture, or by a blind date.

There is actually quite a lot we can do about it and simply pretending it isnot there, is not one of the better strategies!

But I dont have time to relax! Relaxing is not necessarily about takinglots of time away from your studies of course you need to spend enoughtime at your desk but it needs to be effective time and too much stressmakes that ineffective! Here are a few quick strategies:

    EXAMS ARE LOOMING!

PREPARE YOURSELF AS FULLY AS YOU CANBY ATTENDING THESE SEMINARS

Plan your immediate environment so it is not too messy andcluttered and swamps your concentration or distracts you (turnoff email and cellphones, avoid a noisy or cold place, ensureenough ventilation so as to stay awake)

Organise your time so you know how much you need to do and so

that you can know where you are in the process. Use atimetable.Remember the 80 / 20 principle it takes 20% of the time to learn

80% of the work but to learn that last 20% is what takes time ask yourself if you have to know it all and perfectly or is 80%good enough?

Stop. Take a deep breath right deep into your body. Feel yourstomach expand against your waistband as you do so. Nowbreathe out slowly against your lips as though you were coolinga cup of hot soup. Continue to breath slowly and regularly forthree of four breaths.

Sleep is a time when your mind organises and makes sense of whatyou have learned. It is part of your studying and not something

to do when you are not studying. You need to have sufficientrestful sleep and it is definitely not wasted time.Exercise does not have to be an hour in the gym. A brisk walk

around the ring road, either alone or with friends, canrejuvenate you, flood your brain with oxygen and give you achance to reflect on what you have learned up to that point.

Eat a balanced diet try to avoid the junk comfort foods which willleave you feeling uncomfortable. Keep a jar of something tastysuch as carrot sticks or apple slices all already cut and ready tonibble when you find you need something.

Stretch your whole body screw yourself into a tight ball clutchingyour knees and tucking your head into your chest, then uncoilslowly and reach as high as you can as you breath out.

If you find that you are overwhelmed, talk to someone who can help there are strategies which can help (but you do have to actually usethose strategies!). It is less helpful (and a waste of precious time) tobemoan the struggles but a far better investment to face them head onand do something to change them!

Both the Centre for Teaching and Learning and the Student CounsellingService run seminars to assist at this time so check out what is availableand make use of it!

    FIRE DRILL WINNERSSEMESTER ONE

Congratulations to Tararua/Ruahine Hall for winning the Semester One fire drills. For their efficient effort in vacating the hall, they received $150 social account credit.

Well done!Be ready for Semester Two Fire Drills!

All too often tragedy intrudes, unexpected and unwanted, into our lives. These words are being written two days afterthree visiting American students were killed in a roadaccident on their way to walk the Tongariro Crossing.

Incidents like these leave us feeling simultaneously stunned, angry, confused and vulnerable. Life is not fair. No one isbullet proof. There are no easy answers. When tragedystrikes, presence, support and empathy count for muchmore than attempted explanations.

Historically, followers of Jesus have believed that, in him,the God behind all life has come amongst us and shared ourpain, somehow absorbing it into his own body on the crossand easing it with a progressively real, if indefinable, senseof his own healing presence. That may sound strange but it

is something testified to by countless numbers of peopleeven in the midst of deep anguish. We are not alone. Thatis a key element of the good news of Jesus even in ourdarkest hour.

We at the Centre hope you have had a great term. Wehave enjoyed getting to know many of you at Pancake Nitesand on other occasions. We hope your exams go well, youhave a great mid-year break, and we look forward to seeingyou again at the Centre sometime next term.
