    STUDENT COUNSELLING

    A new semester!

A new semester and new challenges! How does it feel to beback at uni and back in the Halls after being away for a while?Exciting or a bit of a let down, or both? While the new semester

can be exciting re-connecting with friends in the Halls andstarting new papers - it can be a difficult time for many studentsafter having re-experienced the warmth, home cooking and timewith close family and old friends. Or maybe you haveravelled quite a bit enjoying the sites without having to think toohard about studying. The wrench of returning for another longsemester can be hard, especially if you miss home, did not doespecially well in exams, or are not entirely sure that this is thedegree you really want to be doing.

There are a few things you can do to make it easier.

The first is to ensure that all the practical things are takencare of:Are you happy with your current papers?f not go and talk to the team in the Careers & EmploymentService on Level 2 of Registry and / or Academic Advisers .

How were your exam results? Did you achieve as you hadhoped? If not do you know why? What went wrong? Was it thatyou just did not do enough work? Was it you did not understandhe work? Was it exam nerves? Poor preparation? Low internalmarks? Emotional/relationship difficulties?Go and discuss it with the relevant people, and if you dont know

what the cause was, start with that and talk to someone to workout what went wrong. Make time to see a learning consultant inhe Centre for Teaching and Learning (upstairs in the StudentCentre), or a counsellor at Student Counselling or even yourpaper co-ordinator.

It is really important to know why you did not achieve the resultsyou had wished for.

Have you sorted your finances and fees?Make time to go to the Financial Advisers on Level 2 of Registry toexplore financial awards and scholarships, your StudyLinkallowances and budgeting issues.

Emotions all over the place? Missing home? Not sure if you shouldbe here?Try Student Counselling Service. There is a usefulbrochure on our website (http://crow.massey.ac.nz) and availableon the stands in SSLB, the Rec Centre and BSC buildings aboutLeaving Home which give a range of really helpful tips.

Did not get into Vet and not sure what to do now?Try Careers & Employment Service.

If you are unsure where to go or if its just that things are not asgood as you had hoped talk to an RA or one of the Halls staff whowill be able to point you in the best direction if they cannot help youthemselves!

But all is not negative make the most of the rest of the year.Become involved in all that is happening on campus, engage withyour academic programme and embrace the opportunities.

Keep an eye out for theAre YOU employable?campaign about tobe launched this semester and join in to see how you can translate

your time at uni into a great work life at the end of it allbecausethat is why you are here! Right?

    With all good wishes.

Two buses departed nice and early for the secondnternational Off Campus Trip during the recentSemester Break.

One bus headed to Te Papa Museum of New Zealand, where students explored the city or spent the day lookingat the exhibits and exploring the harbour area around TePapa.

The other bus went to the Wellington Zoo. After a fewhours of experiencing the exotic animal and bird life, thestudents and families were taken to the cable car in thecity centre. Riding to the top of the cable car track, they

had a great view across the city. The bus was waiting atthe top of the cable car, and on the way out of the city, made a short stop at the Beehive and Parliament buildingsfor a photo opportunity. We were very lucky with the weather because, although it was cold, it was not wet or windy as it hadbeen for most of the week.
