Dear Parishioners: Some in the media have been making tasteless jokes be-cause Easter happens to fall on April Fool’s Day this year. I believe it is no coincidence that the Resurrection of the Lord took place at this time of the year. The dead of winter gives way to longer and warmer days. All of cre-ation seems to echo the joyous refrain, “He is risen!” The chirping of birds finding their mates and the flowering of the first snow drops, then crocus, daffodils, hyacinths, tu-lips all seem to reach a peak with the blooming of the dogwood tree. We chose to include its blossoms in our altar decora-tions because of the beautiful legend which has grown up around the Resurrection. In Jesus’ time, the dogwood tree was of a great size, like that of an oak tree! It was used to make the cross to which Jesus was nailed. This was the cause of great sadness for the dogwood. Jesus, sensing this sad-ness, promised the dogwood tree that it would never again grow large enough to be used to build a cross. Its branches would be narrow and crooked--not good for building at all. Its flower now has four petals in the shape of the cross. The center of the cross eventually forms the red beads of blood which the flowering crown gives way to. At the edge of each of its petals is a nail dent. The nail dents are stained with the color of Jesus’s blood. Although the origin of the legend is un-known, the beautiful dogwood certainly gives us a message of new life, not only for Jesus, but also for all those who place their faith in him because we are left with only an empty tomb. Easter blessings to all!

Love and Prayers, Bro. John

Estimados Feligreses:.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The Paschal Mystery is the key to our Christianfaith: the dying and rising of Jesus that is the pattern ofour life. In their first steps on the road of faith, the cat-echumens feel the cross of glory traced over their eyes,on their lips, across their shoulders, on their ears, overtheir heart, and on their feet. The mystery is that evendeath gives way to life for those who are held in theembrace of Jesus. Today, many new Christians arisefrom the waters of the font. Yet the font is not the des-tination of their journey. The goal is Pentecost, fiftydays from now, and a lifetime of praise to the Father,in Christ, in the embrace of the Holy Spirit, for thesake of the world. “Neophyte,” our ancient word fornewly-baptized people, means “newly-planted” inGreek. If someone in your parish has just been bap-tized, welcome them today. The smiles on their facesand the light in the eyes is a foretaste of heaven.

PROCLAIM THE RISEN CHRIST On Easter morning everything—the spring weather, the flowers, birds and butterflies, the people around us in their finery, the beautiful liturgy and music—everything seems to bear witness that Jesus Christ is risen today! Like the eyewitness accounts in today’s scriptures, the glorious and joyful life all around us helps us to believe the good news of the Resurrection and sing “Alleluia!” In the scriptures today we hear from Peter and Paul and John. All three speak with conviction about wit-nessing the resurrected Christ. John’s Gospel account includes Mary of Magdala, who also was privileged to witness the Resurrection and tell others the good news. On this glorious Easter Sunday can we our-selves give eyewitness accounts that Jesus Christ is risen today, alive and active in our lives?
