Terminology ...Formula is a mixture of haircolor products used to create the desired shade – the “recipe” used by the haircolorist to color the client/guest’s hair.

Gray Hair is the result of a gradual decline in melanin production located in the cortex layer of the hair.

Haircolor is the melanin located in the cortex layer and/or the artificial pigments from actual haircoloring products that are responsible for providing color to the hair.

Highlighting is a special effects service that lightens selected pieces of hair with the use of lightener and/or haircolor.

Hydrometer is an instrument that measures the specific gravity of a liquid (an example is hydrogen peroxide).

Level is determining the degree of lightness to darkness of a color depending on how much light is reflected or absorbed.

Lightening is when haircolor or lightener is applied, causing the natural or artificial pigments in the hair to lift to higher levels of color. It is the opposite of going darker.

Line of Demarcation is a dark band (or visible line) that is a result of haircolor overlapping onto previously colored hair.

Terminology ...

Saturation is a combination of pigment concentration and light reflection, which results in a multitude of colors.

Patch or Predisposition Test is applying a small amount of haircolor mixture on the skin to check for skin sensitivity of product/chemical.

pH Scale is the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration in a solution to determine if it is acid, neutral or alkaline.

Pigments are what give color its color, whether the source is natural, chemical or mineral.

Porosity is the amount of water/liquid the hair (cuticle) absorbs within a relative amount of time.
